Speaker 1 (00:00):
Harvey little chip of chase over the Jordan sits up beautifully.
He gets a pass away to Simmy Reese. He's quirking
it down at the Monster twenty two. He kicks her
back at Dunstern. What on earth have we just witnessed?
(00:21):
Simmy Reese with the Enfield check and Kyle Preston gets
a sickret under the Black John. The Crusaders have their
food callow down. Oh Preston fires it to O'Connor the
Crusader's backs. Do you want to play a little bit more?
Jordan's get past for rees. He finds harvily appeals around
the site brought down on the hurricane tin and it
(00:46):
looks like the Crusaders play buttons to touch. The heartening
start on Valentine's Day for the Crusaders down by fourteen early,
they find a way with precision on attack fifty three
twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Final score, Yes, indeed, thirty three twenty five in front
of a very good crowd around just a tad under
fourteen thousand, and we're privileged to be joined by head
coach Rob Pienny. Good morning morning, Leslie, good thanks, congratulations,
You've made a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Happy yeah, oh that's lovely. Yeah, that's the aim. So yeah,
really proud of what happened last night, and it was
just so good to see the Crusaders fans out in
force and really supporting the boys and bringing them home.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
When you look back at the match and the early
set back and the getting plinged early and then the
yellow card and the fact that they dug deep and
they got themselves back into the game. But you know,
the Hurricanes brought a lot to the match. It's faced
in that first half they ran hard at you guys.
But in that first half, what were your thoughts going
into that halftime break, given that you were down twenty two.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Four team we were throwing off our kilowe but early,
you know, it came really hard, which was obviously a
directive around the style of referring the one on the game,
and that set the tone, I guess, and we because
we didn't have much position in that first ten minutes,
(02:22):
we were under the pump defensively, and obviously the yellow
card and then losing noah, Yeah, so it just threw
us a little bit. But how good were the leaders
Davy Heavily and Will Jordan in particular on bringing the
group together really calmly getting back in the game. And
(02:47):
when we came into the sheds there was a lot
of fatigue about, but there was also that little glint
in the eye that you could pick that it wasn't
over by any means. And you know, these men and
proud men, and they wanted to do it job. And
you know, we knew that if we were able to
hold the ball a little bit and we'd turned over
a couple of inexplicable rucks, that the ball just throd
(03:09):
out the side and just made a couple of tiny eras.
And the Canes are so effective in their attack and
got some dynamic individuals and they punished us. So when
we held onto the ball built pressure that things could
could turn. And that's the way it panned out.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
And we talk about that word adversity. And you came
back from that and you kept trying. You kept attacking,
You kept being denied forward pass here, forward pass there, try,
line went begging, but you kept giving it everything on attack,
which is such a crucial part. You know that they
kept believing.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, it's a great, great start for us in that area.
I can't speak highly enough about James Marshall what he's
brought to our attack and where he's taking it. We've
had the All Blacks back in and around for a
couple of weeks. That's really the first serious hit out
under the new structure, and you know that there's a
(04:08):
long way to go on it yet, but you can
see the semblance of something mighty in and amongst it,
and you know, when we get it right, we're quite dangerous.
And with the talent that we have, it really allows
those boys to express themselves confidently. Which is which is?
(04:29):
You know, such a such a great hallmark I guess
of Crusader Rugby historically, and you've talked.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
About the leadership of David Heveli and Will Jordan. How
good to have Will Jordan and his paceback that just
makes such a big differences so quick off the mark,
seev Reese, Ethan Blackett and we know what we expect
with them, but you must be thrilled with people like
Joanni Maananu and also Antonio Shelfoon fantastic games.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, they are the two highlights for me to be there.
You know, we saw Antonio plan towards the back end
of last year and what he was able to do
and then he's got a refracture in his lower leg,
and then he that he really owned the Tasman line
out through that Renfilly Shield period and just played so
(05:14):
well and he's brought that into this season and to
go eighty minutes there is a great credit to him
and where he's at. And as I say, Yoani, who's
he's just such a lovely character around the group and
getting his opportunity to play such a competitive man and
(05:35):
had to step up and yeah, so proud of of
what that young man did in the number two jersey
given you know where we've got to with a with
a couple of injuries and a you know, in a
situation where we you know, we could have been falling short,
but he was accurate everywhere through a couple of gym
lineouts which were crucial and got us, Yeah, got us
(05:58):
on the front foot a lot too around the park.
So highlights in a lot of ways those two young men,
and you know, hopefully they can really kick on someone.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Who's played a lot of rugby but not down here,
and that's Kyle Preston a hat trick on debut, getting
into the game in the eighth minute. Least expected what
to try that second one. I mean, as absolute pally,
you would have been on your feet.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, we were, as everyone was. You know, it's a
responsibility to try to play a brand a rugby that
is entertaining and brings the crowds along and people love
to be a part of. And as I said, you know,
Jimmy's been a big part of that with Brad now
entering that arrangement, which has been awesome for us. But
(06:43):
the really is Kyle came in. We knew a lot
about him. He set a record for the Crusaders Bronco
four minutes thirteen which can now go on the board
now that he's capped, and he's just got a motor
like you wouldn't believe in a competitive spirit that you
(07:07):
need in your nines. And you know he stepped in
for his debut match really efficiently, and yeah, it was
a good selection to get him into our environment.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, absolutely, it was just loved the work ethic and
you know the fact that he showed a few people
his ability. I mean people already knew a little bit
about it, but on the highest stage here domestically anyway.
So the critical injury attritionian you've already had thirteen out
before you entered this match. So how's Ethan Black at
(07:40):
his finger? And what does Noah Hosam look like?
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Oh, Ethel look pretty sore last night, but he's a warrior,
sure goodness. And yeah, Noah's not one of those Negli
hyakal sprains that can range in time, so not able
to give you any indication yet, but it'll be It'll
be weeks, I'm sure. So that was a that's a
(08:09):
real shame, you know, two of our young, really outstanding
young potential superstars really and no hosm and George Bell
Georgie now is you knows as you'll know as unable
to play during this campaign. He has to undergo an
operation and now it's out for a few weeks. But
(08:29):
he'll be back, which is exciting and can't wait to
have him back in the frame. And but we've got
some great nights, you know, drummers in the wings, chomping
at the bit, and Louis Chapman has just been training
the house down the whole pre season. He is such
a wonderful guy to have in the group. So look,
we're not this chute when he means there and there's
(08:50):
you see it saw from the weekend from last night,
KP's very more capable.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Absolutely absolutely. Just on another note that there was a
development match prior to the Super Rugby match. That's right, Yeah,
what happened.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
In that match? Boys were wrapped. Yeah, it was a great, great.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Ef The Crusaders came through. Yes, yep, yes, right, okay,
I just want I saw them walking out of the
field of play and just wondered what would happen with it.
That's all very good. Look, I know one match doesn't
make a season, but it's a damn good start, right.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Yeah, well, it's just so good for the confidence of everybody.
Lots of work goes on behind the scenes by all
the all the staff and the admind people that are
unsung heroes in a lot of ways, and obviously the
flow on effect for the boys. Of course, it's only
one win and it's only a small step, but it's
in the right direction and you know, hopefully we can
(09:46):
springboard off this. It won't be a linear straight from
here to the top or anything like that. There'll be
some bumps and bruises held along the way. But yeah,
as I said, Davy and the leadership grew done an
amazing job in the last couple of weeks and got
the team operating in a good way and catching staffs
(10:08):
linking in with them really effectively. So all in all, yeah,
please today without being content.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah, well very good. Well we're very grateful what you've
come to the phone and given us your thoughts when
you've had a well, I don't know, with your mind,
allowed you to have a decent sleep. You're probably thinking
about a multitude of things. But Rob Penny, thanks so
much for coming to the phone. And yeah, it was
a very really good game at rugby I think for
a super rugby opener, and there was a butte one
(10:37):
across the Tasman as well. But the good thing is
the Crusaders came out on top.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Thanks for US war once again. There's awesome.
