Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, Sunday sees the finals day for Canterbury women's premiere
golf the Pollock Cup. Why Marie play White to Kitty
and Russley. The defending champions played christ Church. Joining us
is the joint manager of the christ Church team, Robbie Gillespie.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning, Good morning, Lizzie.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Tell us a little bit about your team and how
the competition has evolved in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, I guess the season for us got off a
little slowly. We were a bit so hitting our straps.
We sort of didn't find our rhythm. Initially we had
three halves and then two wins, which was great because
it just kind of brought us into the finals where
(00:45):
we wanted to be. So yes, so start, but no,
we're all good for tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
So you've got the momentum then heading into the momentum.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
And the Pollock Cup. I mean it's a much treasured
heritage part of golf here, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It certainly is. I guess it's the you know, it's
really the only premiere golf competition we have for women
in Canterbury and it kind of showcases the girls playing
off the stick and how what they can do in
match play. A lot of club stuff is stable for it,
and so it's nice to actually get these off the
(01:23):
stick matches. And it's a place where Canterbury Golf can
come or the selectors can come and actually have a
look at the girls playing and get an idea of
who they who they have in the Canterbury area, you know,
to be put forward to the Rep teams. So it's
good for a whole lot of reasons.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Well, it's interesting because the finishing order of round robin
saw why might the top seed? But money is on
you even without Catherine Palmer. Are you feeling that pressure?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
No, No, we're looking forward to it. Look, we have
a great team. I could talk about our team all day.
I won't, but we've got Monica to Lissie. She was
an outstanding star player for us. She's been a Rep
golfer for both Canterbury and Otago. We have either Yn,
she's a really exciting young talent. She's our current club
champion of christ Church actually and she's a Rep. We
(02:13):
have Olive a Tapoo. She's a Rep Canterbury Rep and
has been for many years. She's also represented Samoa in
the Pacific Games. Nicky Webb. She's our captain. She's also
played Rep golf. She's highly focused and a capable player.
We have a new member this year is superin Bay.
She's young junior, she's got a very exciting future and
(02:37):
golf ahead of her. We're really excited about watching her.
Melan new Boons and our team. She's been in our
Pollock squad for many years. She's a very solid player.
But we're very excited too because we've got two very
good reserves. We've got Robin Scott who used to play
for North Harbor. She was also an American collegiate player
(02:57):
with a sound game, so we're very happy to have her.
And we've got mel Brew who's played over sixty games
for Pollt Cup over the years. She's also a co
manager and she's had many exciting wins for us and
over the years. So now we feel good about our
team lay.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So where as finals, where are the games being played?
Speaker 2 (03:17):
We're playing at Horrorrata all the games, all the semi
fi good and horror Ata is a really strong country
club that's remarkably well to restore that course and get
it back after that significant flood damage. And I think
that like a lot of that work was done by volunteers.
(03:37):
As a course, I mean it's tree lined, it's got
well positioned waterways, there's some elevation changes, tricky goop greens.
It'll be a really good contest for everybody out there,
I think. Plus they have a great cafe. That's good.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
The nineteenth is really important. Credere the producer, reckons that
part of ours is the best course around the traps.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
It's wonderful. Yeah, I think everyone loves it. And you know,
even not from the tea box, I always think it's
a good alignment. Everything feels good out there. So yeah,
we're looking forward to it to nearly start. But yeah,
well you've got it.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Yeah. Look, we're really grateful for finding out about that.
Remembering that whitea Kitty and Russie. No, Russy's playing you
and why my replay White to Kitty. So you have
to find the finalists first, don't you.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yes, yes, So that's I mean, we have had a
long history playing against Russy over the years. Christ Church
and roughly have come up against each other quite a lot.
They beat us last year in the final. So we're
looking forward to restoring the balance, like we're looking forward
(04:46):
to being in the final and playing whoever, whoever, whoever
it's going to be. We expect the final will be
a really tough match, but we hope to prevail by
winning those really small moment It.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Sounds good to me. Look, you've done really well, Robbie Gillespie.
We wish you all the very best for your Pollock
Cup semi final and we'll look forward to hearing how
it prevails. Thank you brilliant giving us all the goss
was Robin Robbie Gillespie on the Pollock Cup. That is
the Yeah, the the epitome of the highest golfing team.
