Speaker 1 (00:00):
From grassroots to gold medals.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's Wellington's Small Sport Breakfast with Adam Uber, Rutherford, Andy
and King Toyota on.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
News talks 'b twenty nine past eight on the All
Sport Breakfast Sea. Let's chat more about the football at
sky Stadium last night. Of course, you know, we talk
a lot about Chris Wood's presence and his hat trick
and everything like that. But the overall, obviously story is
the All Whites just one win away from FIFA World
Cup qualification next year. They'll play the negotiating a final
Monday night up at Eden Park and Auckland on the
(00:29):
back of that win over Fiji here in Wellington last night,
joining us a friend of News Talks, he'd be former
All White David Choke. Morning to you, David, what was
your biggest takeout of the game last night?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Old? Job done halfway through these two matches, so it
was impressive. It was a job, very well done. I
had in my head if they could get five or six,
they'd be pretty happy. They got seven. Probably should have
had a you know, it was a comprehensive win and
a very good performance to sweep beside this pig inside
(01:02):
which was an amateur side playing professionals and it looked
like it.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Yeah. Did indeed, did you expect Fiji to maybe put
up a bit more fight defensively, put up a bit
of a wall earlier on more so than they.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Did well, they had to keep them out. That would
be the coaching philosophy. I think they went into the
game with but six minutes and Chris Wood got them
under way, so that went out the window. Once they're behind,
they kept trying, I suppose, but I didn't really expect
much of fig Both of these island nation sides are
(01:36):
playing against a side that is what forty or fifty
places above them in the world, and that's a big art,
particularly to do it in their own backyard. Had these
games been in the island, that throws a little bit
of jeopardy in but here at home in Wellington and Auckland,
they all should get the job done.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Did New Zealand get much out of being in Oceania? Yes,
they get this World Cup spot now and effectively it
is directing tree barring a major upset through this qualification path.
But are there ramifications from that in terms of how
competitive we as a country are overall at our football.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I don't know. I think it's probably favorable for that
direct entry, but they do need to get better games.
I see they've got a couple of games in Dune
that look quality, Cocheavoir and the Ukraine. They're playing in
the Canada Cup or something, so that's good. They need
to get better games, particularly going into a World Cup.
But just to develop our football, we need better games
and consistently better games. These games are tichbox exercises largely
(02:33):
for the All Whites to qualify for that World Cup,
so direct the entry, the Australians be looking across at
us with envy, I think as they look to qualify
through a much tougher and arduous route.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, exactly. And we can't go without talking about the
star of the show last night, Chris Wood, not just
the hat trick on the field, but just the presence
around the stadium, right David. I think there'll be a
lot of fans here who only had eyes on him
that whole game, and we're just watching every move, every
step Chris made around Sky Stadium.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah. Well, I think a lot of people would have
turned up to see a striker at the top of
his game, and they got that he didn't let them down.
In fact, he went one further. He was up in
the crowd after being substitute. He got a yellow card
for that, by the way, so you're not allowed to
go and join the fans from the field. But he
did that and the kids loved it, and I think
everyone had turned up saw Chris Wood right on top
(03:24):
of his game. He's going down as a great of
New Zealand sport, not only football.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
When does he ranked for you against you know, some
of the other greats we've had in the past.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Oh, I've had this debate many times with a few
of them in mates. Is it Ruper or Wood? Do
you think about Nelson and Reed? So there's four big
names in New Zealand football, but at the top of them,
i'd say you'd have Ruther and Wood. Wood's not finished yet.
As they get to that Champions League Forest and he
ends up playing in Europe and doing well there, he'll
have an argument to say he is the goat.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Hard to say that. It was so unsided last night, David,
But anyone else stand out for you or or impressed you.
I thought sarpbrich Sing did a lot of running and
at a lot of good ball's goal to his name
as well. But what else stood out for you from
this New Zealand team.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Well, certainly starpre each thing getting back to his best,
which is great because he had an injury sort of
racked time of things. Defensively, they weren't test to so
he can't really see much of them from the defensive unit. Obviously,
players like Liby Cacacchi are playing at a very high level,
so I thought, you know, he is very very sound.
For me, Marco Staminitz look classy alongside Starprech singing midfield,
(04:31):
so I thought the midfield looks smooth. So hard to
tell with such a weak opposition, but those guys can
be pretty pleased with their performance, as can most who
took the part. Nice to see Costa Barbaruss get a
goal laid on and stake a claim and what is
this not the twilight quite yet but sort of towards
the end of his career.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Yeah, indeed, So New Caledonia Monday at Eden Park. Obviously
there's a lot at stake and I'm sure there'll be
a lot of outside noise heading into this game. What
does the approach need to be for a match against
some unranked sixty odd places below you in the world rankings.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yep, it's get the job done, keep your feet on
the ground, take nothing for granted. All those sort of
cliches come to mind. It would be a huge upset
if they didn't get through this match. I think they
will and they'll do it as well as they did
I think on Friday night. So if you're in Auckland,
you get a chance to go and see some goals
wacked in and I think you'll see Chris what amongst them.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, it might even be in the stands of getting
another yellow carde.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, well he wants to watch himself because you wouldn't
want to like to be suspended off the back of
getting bookings for signing autograph exactly.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah, he's going to have to be a little bit
more careful. Hey, great to catch up David. You have
a great weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Thank you. Always enjoy talking about the.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Football absolutely always love having you on. David Choke former
All White with us here on the All Sport Breakfast.
Looking back on a wonderful afternoon and evening at Sky Stadium,
I thought, you know, there's something quite special when you
know the international football setup comes to Town FIFA. You
know it's all official and you know flags and everything
like that, you know, quite proper, and I think everyone,
(06:03):
they're the twenty thousand plus fans that were in sky
Stadium last night absolutely loved it. And how could you
not love it when you're seeing Chris Wood just pounding
those balls into the back of the nets seven goals
in total to the All Whites. But it also came
off the back of a pretty entertaining game between New
Caledonia and Tahiti and the other semi final, So a
great advertisement I think for international football that Wellington fans
(06:24):
who are exposed to yesterday, and I hope that the
decent crowd we got will encourage New Zealand football to think, well,
we've got some other big games coming up between now
and the World Cup, some friendlies, that let's go back
to Wellington and let the fans enjoy some more top
level international football. So I hope that happens down the
track between now and the FIFA World's Cup, obviously assuming
(06:46):
New Zealand win that final on Monday night and advance
to next year's World Cup in the Americas. For more
