Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaking of cricket, let's talk the plunket shields, and of
course the Wellington Firebirds, as raigning champions, are at the
top end of a rather congested ladder, with the penultimate
round match one day in now between them and Northern
Districts at the Basin Reserve. But of a bowler's wicket
emerging at the Basin yesterday, Northern Districts bowled out for
(00:21):
one hundred and nineteen Wellington's Liam Duddin Liam Dudding, i
should say, getting four wickets for nineteen runs from his
twelve overs, and in reply, Wellington will head into day
two on one hundred and fifty four for seven, so
already aheads from the first innings and Tom Blundele still
there unbeaten on forty three. Nathan Smith back in the
Firebirds for this game as well, returning with one wicket
(00:42):
in that Northern innings yesterday, So Wellington top of the
table only a narrow lead though heading into this round
over Northern their nearest competitors, and then just one round
to play after this, So yeah, it's all on for
chasing Plunket Shield glory this year, and we're lucky enough
to be joined this morning by Wellington Firebirds coach Shane
Juri can sin to look ahead well to the rest
of this game. Shane, very good morning to you, thanks
(01:04):
for your time.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Oh, good morning, thanks for having me. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, well, I guess from a bowling expertise point of
view like you have, he'd be pretty it would have
been an interesting day sing all those wickets full at
the basin yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, it was all happening for lunch and yeah, we
sort of missed out on maybe reducing their total by
a little bit more. We dropped a couple of catches,
but hey, that happens in cricket. And then very pleased
to how we just got on with it, which wasn't
too much damage done. And yeah, so tough to get me.
Tough day for the batters.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Certainly was Lea and Dudding starring. You know in this
red ball Formatties his names come up right through the summer. Shane,
and you're a member of this Wellington five beds team.
How impressed were you of his showing yesterday?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, fantastic lee and sort of came to us at
the start of the season predominantly a new ball baller.
But I've been very pleased to see how he's adapted
his game and his last two wickets yesterday were actually
from bouncers, you know, sort of the short ball, and
he's certainly taken wickets throughout the inning and improved throughout
the season. He's been a great addition for us, you know,
(02:13):
with your emergence of our black number of Black Caps
guys in different roles and positions, we needed another new
ball bowler and he was great to recruit to our team.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Given the leader board now is very tight, and of course,
just to remind people, no playoffs in the plunket shield
after the next game, which is the final round. It's
just so we have as top as the champions like
you were last year, Shane, how much do you look
at those first inning sort of points and you know
you bowled them out for one hundred and nineteen. How
crucial was carefully negotiating the response from the fire beds
first innings.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yeah, I think every point counts. Yeah, I mean particularly
last year. Remember last game was rain affected and I
think we won by three points or something like that.
So every point counts, and I think we got our
full quota of bonus points. It's just happens in the
first inning. For those who don't know about how it works,
it's the first things points. So if you take your
(03:06):
I think it's nine wickets or ten wickets, I can't
actually remember and I should, but you basically get your
four points off for that bowling inning and then as
a banning in it you've got you basically get a
point boarding fifty runs from two hundred. So for us
this morning, you know we've got to try and get
every point we can with the bat We've still got
young te young Hunblands and Tom Blundell the crease and
(03:26):
Michael Sidn't got some valuable runs for us last game.
So I really need the bowls, not only just to
take the wickets this morning, also later on today and yesterday,
but we didn't try and scratch out as many runs
as we can.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, what was you know? What was the wicket?
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Like?
Speaker 1 (03:39):
I mean you look at the wickets on paper that
were tumbling that the struggles for a lot of the batters.
We've got Tom Blundle still there as you mentioned, but
a lot of the other top order struggling yesterday. What
kind of surface was there on offer? And quite a
nice day in Wellington?
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, I think it was a wicket that leading into
the game, you know, it was actually quite a good
wicked believe asking the new ball. If you look at
the way the wickets felt is basically from the new ball.
It was a new surface of obviously, and then leading
into the game was undercovers quite a bit to wicket
with the winner, so you know, slightly favoring the bowls
(04:14):
of the new ball. But I think you'll find very
quickly and nice warm day to day, could be a
lot a lot of runs scored over the next couple
of days, so you know, wouldn't be surprised at this game,
like we've seen the two games we've played so far,
expected to go the full full four day.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, so three wickets in hand. What is your advice
to as a coach to Tom Blundell andpd young husband
hitting out there this morning.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
They know what they're doing, their experienced campaigners. I won't
say too much, so I think it's just trying to
get a really good start and looks a bit positive
and every run counts, and you've been looking to score
and have good intent and keep that partnership going that
they've got. You know, they started and worked really hard
yesterday so hopefully that hard work yesterday is we can
push on and get as I said, as many runs
(04:57):
as you can. I think we've got to roughly a
third five un lead. I think it is so if
we can get that up towards seventy eighty one hundred
and you know, potentially, you know, it may go for
the full four days this game, but also may continue,
you know, with the pressure of what's what's at hand
and what's coming the trophy in our grass and other
teams you know who we're playing, and also Canterbury is
(05:18):
doing well in their game, so you never know what
that little bit of pressure. Hopefully we can you know
that scoreboard lead, schooreboard pressure. Hopefully we can play into
our dang.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah, certainly it doesn't get any easier, does it because
cann are the other main rivals for the title there
nixed opponents for the final rounds.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, it's amazing sort of finished for us, you know,
the top other top two teams. And I've been really
proud the way that our boys were caught. You know,
we've actually had two really tough all day games where
it's on the whole distance pretty much on on two
really good wickets the base and down Atround New York.
So yeah, fingers crossed, we'll get the thing go over
(05:57):
pretty quickly. But let's let's and look forward to the
next game against Cannibury and no doubt they'll want a
good showing after what we did to them down there
last game.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
And Shane tell us about Nathan Smith's returning. Obviously, in
amazing twelve months he's had you know, to all across
all three formats internationally. What's he brought back into the
environment on the back of all his experience he's had
with the black Caps over the last year or so.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Well, one of the first things he said to me,
I'm sure he won't mind me saying, you actually look
forward to a ball going through the keeper because he's
played a lot of white ball cricket and he played
the England Test series. Obviously England played very positive brand
of cricket, so he was quite happy to see the
ball go through the keeper a few times. And yeah,
he just got that extra pace and X factor. You know,
he's a Black Cap and he's done so well and
(06:42):
in domestic cricket, got his opportunity to Black Caps and
bring the left of calmness and confidence in the bowling,
attacking and even for us as a team, he sits
in beautifully because he's it's not that, you know, predominantly
a new ball baller over his career, but as he's
playing for the black Caps, he's actually become more of
a change bawl in that bowling all around the spot.
So again, it's worked so much to how he can
(07:05):
have an impact in the game at any stage. And
I think that's what I really enjoyed about his bowling yesterday.
Came on first change and had an impact straight away,
keep the runs down and really put the pressure on
the opposition matters.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, great, And obviously now Shane in the real fight
now for the Planket Shield Trophy. Yet again, I guess
some people might look at that and say, oh, could
have the Five Birds had a bit of white ball campaign,
a few just unlucky moments and things not going away.
Is there any disappointment that some of the great form
and you know, you know, momentum you've built in Red
Bull cricket hasn't transferred over into the T twenty format
(07:37):
or the four trophy format at this point.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I think for me, with our white Paul Cricket, we've
actually had a lot of improvements and like Ford Trophy
our last year and he won two games out of ten,
all one was washed out and in this year we've
actually had more points, we won more games, and to
be fair, the last game we were actually trying to
play really positively to get the bonus point because if
we knew if a Tago one they were going to
(08:02):
go ahead of us to a net run rate. So
that situation and I think with the t twenty we
sort of, yeah, may have left our run a little
bit late. We got hit some really good form and
we're about to play, you know, the last game and
just got washed out. So I think what what it
just proves and you just keep learning is you just
keep want to keep improving every day and at this
(08:23):
level of cricket, every every moment, every point counts. And
I think that's probably where we just missed out on
a little bit of bit of experience in certain situations.
But I'm really proud how the group has evolved and
just see potentially, you know, so many black cats being
produced in our group. And that's that's my main role
as a coaches. It's not you know, you try to
(08:44):
win trophy. He's been in the end in my role
as development and developing players. You get ready for New
Zealand represent anyone us, so you know hopefully that we
can continue that to happen next year to Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Great and well Shaney, I really appreciate your time as
you head end the day two sounds like you might
be at the base of now seagulls around there enjoying
themselves before before the players hit out, So we'll let
you get back to your prep for the day. Thanks
so much for chatting mate, all the best over the
next couple of weeks and obviously chasing to go back
to back and a lot of our our listeners will
be out right behind you, guys looking to get another gong.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, thank you very much. Yeah, thanks for you to
I'm awesome.
