Each Wednesday, thanks to Quinns Unichem Pharmacy, we catch up with a bunch of local lads who tell it like it is. On this episode, Hewi and Nathan join the chat the morning after the Melbourne Cup — sharing their thoughts, a few hot takes, and what things might look like if they were running the Mataura Licensing Trust.
It’s honest, insightful, and classic Southland banter

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Two of the lads and the studio this morning. Good
morning to Huey and Nathan. Are we gonna address I
was going to say the elephant in the room, but
let's call it the horse in the room. Or we're
just gonna say nay about it and move on.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, Well, Nathan and I will maybe probably more me.
We're a bit dusty today.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
That's what you call front foote.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Put a braver face on here. Always a great afternoon,
was it? And actually me and here we were together
actually said afternoon and at a venue and we had
a fantastic afternoon. Although we didn't win any money. We
lost a lot of money, didn't we.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Hear, Yes, lost a lot of money. But we'll be
back next year.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Are you just saying that so I don't rob your
wallet on the way out of the studio.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
There's literally nothing.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah, speaking of supporting like establishments, there's been a change
in of the guards with the Matoda license interruest and
I know you gentlemen have some thoughts.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yes, yes, Vince Ainsley's been chucked in the mix now,
which is I guess exciting a bit of change is
probably what we needed. Email Tea, we're just sort of
briefly talking on it before some of the changes I
would like to see it would be a couple of
playgrounds put around some of these establishments. So now that

(01:15):
I'm a parent, even though that my one doesn't really
play yet, it would be good to chuck them out
somewhere and still be able to enjoy a couple of beers.
So I'm looking forward to running into Vince and giving
him my thoughts on that.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
I was going to say the same thing here a yeah,
more playgrounds, more playgrounds, Yeah, I yep, we've got a
change in the Guard. I guess all good things must
come to an end, and Horace hasn't restood. I've got
a lot of time for Horas. Horas is actually the
only man in history, apart from my father, that's ever
given me a job. He gave me a job at
the Blue Mountain lumberback in nineteen ninety. So got a

(01:52):
lot of time for Horace. But yeah, look, let's hope
that a change in the Guard gets some change, because,
in all honesty, I reckon our pubs need a boot
up the ass, and and some change restaurants do too.
And while mlt A running the show around here, I
don't see a lot of change, and I want to
see some change. So so there you go. I think,

(02:13):
you know, you go out of town, you go to
Queens and got a wannac and all that. You want
a good feed, you'll get it up there here. It's
pretty hit and miss a lot of the time. So
when you.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Say a boot in a different direction, are you talking
about more entertainment, more playgrounds or sort of what is
other than food quality? What would be your main point
of focus for them?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
I think, you know, a lot of air pubs personal
I reckon they lack a bit of atmosphere at times.
You know, as I say, the food's pretty hid and miss,
and I want to see, you know, I'd just love
to see. Look, we've got some great young people that
are working in these pubs, but I would like to
see them actually trained up, you know, perhaps a bit
more training going to them.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
It just seems like, you know, some of the establishments
have got such big staff turnaround that there's all these
you know cos coming in from sometimes all around all
around the world, and they don't seem to hang about
for very long. So they need to figure figure that
out too. Like I know that Thomas screen struggled over
the last few years of even like you're not being
able to open because they didn't have staff or didn't

(03:15):
have cos it just you know, it just seems odd,
how you know they can't fill these spaces.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Do you think there is some room therefore, maybe some
local pathways getting these kids coming out of school perhaps
that want to be chiefs or work in hospital and
they do almost like an apprenticeship through the MLTAM.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Or something like that. Well mt give away a lot
of money to youngsters to go away and study, so
you know, something like that would be a great idea,
you know, like if you can fund some of their
study and say hey, look you've got to give us
back five years or something like that, or three years.
Five years might be a bit of a stretch for
a young person these days, but I think that would
be a good idea.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Hm, he's almost making sense, So we might leave what
we pen and that take a break up

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
