Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tessa Gettis is here to chat this morning about a
fantastic community event coming up in Wakaya. It is the
way Kaya Poker Run, and it's all about putting the
fun and fundraising and a bit of friendly competition, but
it's all in support of Waikaiya School and Waikaya Forest Trails.
So here she is to tell us all about it
and give us the details for what we can expect
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Good morning, Good morning chitty.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Now let's start with the basics, because my head spinning
as to what this could be. What exactly is a
poker run and how does it actually work?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yes, so how it works is it's basically a day
out in your car. You go for a really nice drive,
so you start it's starting at the Waikaya Hotel and
once you're there you get your first card. You're a card,
and then from there on you get given a rout

(00:53):
that you follow in your car, and there'll be three
other stops and then at those stops you'll be given
another card. So by the end of the journey, when
you come back to the Waikaia Hotel, you'll have a
hand of cards and you'll play them as though you're
playing a game of poker, so that will be your hand.
And throughout the journey we've got like a scavenger hunt

(01:14):
type thing just of different landmarks and different things to
look out for, just to make the drive a little
more entertaining, or if you've got kids in the car
or yeah, no, it'll be a great, great day for
hopefully a nice drive around the Northern Southland countryside.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
I love that it does sound like it will be
a great drive and you sort of only get to
know the map or the track on the day of
as well, so there can be no cheating. But this
event supports both the school and also that Grade three
Blue Descent Trails, So can you tell us a little
bit more on those and why they are so important
for that whole community.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yes, absolutely, so I'm actually speaking on behalf of the
Waikaya Trails Trust, but I'm also on the Waikaia Home School.
So for the Waikaia Trails Trust, yes, it's the opening
of that new Grade three Blue Descent trail, so yeah,
we have to do quite a lot of fundraising towards
getting that up and running. So that's going to be

(02:13):
a real asset to the Waikaia Forest trails. They're currently
really great up and running the ones that they've got,
but yeah, that's going to be a real asset getting
that new trail opened up. And for the Waikaia School,
we're quite a small school up there, and so the
home and school pays the second teacher's salary, So we

(02:36):
do quite a bit of fundraising towards that to get
that second teacher and keep a second teacher in the school,
just to give our kids the best opportunities and education
that we can.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Oh, I love two things about this, both of those
causes actually, but also you know you said speaking on
behalf of the Trails Trust, but I'm also on the
school committee, and I just think that just sums up
lots of our real communities, but especially that very special
one out there are lots of incredible humans putting on
mini heads to make sure especially our kids get the

(03:09):
best opportunities, even if they live, you know, right in
the middle smack bang of a town or a city.
So talking about registrations for the poker run, it's this
coming a weekend, how do we make sure we can
get involved?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Cool? So you can pre register, which would be great
because it's really good for us to then know how
many people we've got coming along. So yeah, to pre
register you just email Waikaya Trails Trust at gmail dot com.
Otherwise yeap this. You can still register on the day
and so they open at eleven am at the Waikaia Hotel.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Registrations from eleven said day, fifteenth of November, and then
it cacks off of course from the Waikaia Hotel and
then last kids, last kids bring them into but last
cards and by four point thirty at the hotel as well.
Light Testa said, pre reach it if you can by
flicking an email to my client Trails Trust at gmail

(04:07):
dot com. And it is such a great support calls
to support times to thank you for the chat and
all the details, tests and all the best for an
epic day out on said day.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, thank you. Just another thing I wanted to say
is that the route that they'll be driving, it's all
on tar seals, so there's no gravel roads. So you know,
for those people that have got quite nice cars and
don't want to get any stone chips or anything, they'll
be absolutely fine.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
