Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from news Talk zed Be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Thank you very much, Raylan, And as we do it
this time every Wednesday, I asked the Expert series, and
this week we've got Matt the Mechanic back with us.
He's got thirty eight years experience as a mechanic in
the automotive industry. He's worked for pretty much every franchise
brand you can think of, from the Japanese through to
the Europeans. You'll find him at Exile Autos and Fakatane.
He's a good man and he's brilliant at this stuff.

(00:41):
So if you've got a question for Matt, now's your opportunity.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty gered a.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Matts, Good afternoon, guys.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
How are you very good?

Speaker 5 (00:49):
Should we go straight into Donald with his nineteen seventy zipper.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
You Donald, you're on with Matt? How you doing?

Speaker 6 (00:58):
Thanks very much? My first car in nineteen seventy. Zippa
bought it in seventy five a cow that us told
don't buy the Troublesome. It's been understarted completely understars a
C the unused since nineteen ninety three, it has not seized.
What is a mechanic, mature mechanic? How would you go
about gently restarting it?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
I'd change the oil and filter. I'd probably change the
radiator fluid. You'll probably need a new battery. Yeah, I'd probably.
Once I've changed the oil and filter, disconnect the ignition
so it doesn't fire, and wind it over a bit
to get the oil flowing through the engine.

Speaker 6 (01:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
The start up you need probably.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Or you go, man, you go first, man.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
You'll probably need new fuel. And if you know, whatever's
in the carbridge is probably evaporated. You might need to
pull the top off the cab and clean it out.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, Donald, hopefully that works.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
You got that, Donald?

Speaker 6 (02:03):
Yes, I did think very much.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, lovely, all right, all right.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Good luck?

Speaker 5 (02:07):
Beautiful.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Via calls the Ford Zippa.

Speaker 5 (02:09):
Now you speak this seat of the countessential New Zealand car,
the Ziphyr. If you want to give yourself a treat,
look up John Campbell's or not. John Campbell's was named
John Clark's appearance in the movie Gosh, what was the movie?
Someone Will tell Me?

Speaker 4 (02:24):
As a car salesman, does it never say die?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Never say die.

Speaker 5 (02:28):
Yeah, make one hundred down a steep hill with a
stuff suddenly up.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
It's recalled.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Oh yeah, yeah, you've never owned a zipper yourself, mat No.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
Jeru, you've got a twenty eighteen Ranger you want to
talk about?

Speaker 7 (02:48):
Yeah, Jerry, Sorry, guys.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
You're in the book is Duu.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
That's probably not a name.

Speaker 7 (02:53):
Jerry.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
We've got to you instead of a y, but that
makes more sense.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
It's classy. I want to call you Duru. We'll call
you Duru for the rest of this. Called Jeru. You've
got a twenty eighteen Ranger and we use it.

Speaker 7 (03:04):
Mainly for torna caravan. Now when on driving along, it's
an automatic. When I'm driving along, not over revenu or anything.
It goes first taking third board and then it might
jump into sits, but it gives a big clunk back
and then continues on into six and whenever you're slowing down,
it just slows down normally the way it should go

(03:26):
back through the gear. I've taken it to forward about
three times. It's when it's a load or without load,
if that makes sense. With the caravan or without I've
taken the forward and they're doing all the diagnostics. And
they can't find the thing wrong with it.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Okay, I'll probably start by changing the givebox oil. And
if you're telling with it, it might it might be
beneficial to put an external oil cooler in the in
the transmission.

Speaker 8 (03:55):
Line, right, they're not put an extra oil.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
It will have one, but if you put an external
one on it, it will it will work better, it
won't get as hot. But I'd start by changing the
and then maybe looking at an external oil coller. Otherwise
that may be an electronic process. You might have to
get it scanned, but if you've taken it back to four,
they've probably already scanned it. And then if they can't
find any codes, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'd start with the

(04:22):
oil and then maybe an external oil coller.

Speaker 8 (04:25):
Okay, so I'm not as hard to diagnose.

Speaker 7 (04:27):
What do you think that is? The worst yees that
could happen, The worst that could happen.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
I might not win a lot of one Saturday again. Yeah,
if it's not leaking, just chick it for leaks and
just make sure there's no external leaks. But they've probably
already done that if you've been back there. But I'd
start by changing the oil.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, Drew, slash Jerry, good luck with hit twenty eighteen range.
There's a text tier Matt ninety three Toronto t D
twenty seven automatic randomly drops to lower gear and won't change.
Only way to get back to normal is to turn
off the engine and start again.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Any advice, Yep, I just can't off the top of
my head think how they're controlled. But if it's probably
got a transmission computer and it's probably a computer issue.
So again it's getting a bit early to be to
be able to be scanned, but probably an auto electrician
might be the best bit for that.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Yep, very good.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
If you've got a question for Matt, now is your opportunity,
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is the number
to call.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
We've got full lines at the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
But keep trying and he will give you some great advice.
Just before we go back to the phone calls, Matt's
found a little bit of He's done some research. He's
put it that way.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
Yeah, I was talking about this great piece of John
Clark audio. You might know him as Fred dag He
was one of New Zealand's greatest comedians. He was in
the Timmi where a Morrison movie Never Say Die as
a remarkably honest car salesman.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
And I just love this audio.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
I think it's phenomenal.

Speaker 9 (05:58):
Seven hundred, seven hundred, And I suppose I only had
one owner, a little old lady who only drove it
on Sunday's least.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
She's an ex rental. I made of mind thrash to
ring at him for a.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Fair bit border and here see if I could find
some bunny to fit into it.

Speaker 9 (06:14):
That's a marker.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Be frienk of you, Cyril, Cyril.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Well, it's not a lot of commissioning a seven hundred
dollar vehicle. I'm not going to make about all day
selling it.

Speaker 7 (06:22):
He doesn't want it anyway, tell us about it?

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well, uh the body works pretty well rooted as you
can see. But uh, well, I never give up these
old sixers, do they? You know, a little hard to start,
a little hard to start, runs like a haunted shit
house for a bit, But once she warms up, there's
a lot of grund down there. I wouldn't be surprised
if you got the ton out of this, you know,
a decent downhill run, you know, with a frisk northerly
up your freckle.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
That's so good.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Look it up on YouTube. It's one of the most
greatest New Zealand comedy performances of all time. John Clark
and Never Say Die.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Right, let's go to the calls. Mark, you're going to
an issue with your a noisy belt?

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Is that right?

Speaker 7 (06:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Good, I've got a I've got a wheeling tim and
it seems recently simple to.

Speaker 8 (07:09):
Mechanics for the.

Speaker 10 (07:13):
Wonderbug player.

Speaker 8 (07:14):
And yeah, at a manually pretty challenging when I'm going
up with hell.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
Can anyone understand what Mark say?

Speaker 3 (07:24):
I'm really having trouble hearing your there's.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
A lot of technical issues going on here. Yeah, some
kind of storm of cockuppery going on here.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Yeah, So the information I've got here, so stick accelerator,
Matt in a noisy belt.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
That's all we've got to go on.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Advice, please, it sounds like he's headed into the shop
a few times and he's still got the same problem. Look,
the best advice really is to find someone that knows
what they're doing with it. Yeah, ATV is not really
anything that I'm sort of familiar with. But a sticky
accelerator and a noisy belt sounds pretty simple to fix.
But I think you might just be taking to the

(07:59):
wrong guy. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
So Matt Alan asks, what is the best small coat?
What is the best small car to buy for safety, few,
your economy, and a bit of zip in.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Your Opinioner Coler, I've got two of them.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah you yeah, car, safe, economy, love that high there.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
I purchased a two thousand and five Red four a
few weeks ago, and it is very expensive on gas
runs well, I think, and I drive with a very
light foot.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Any thoughts, Yeah, they're not the best on gas anyway,
if you're driving it around town, I assume it's a
four wheel drive, they're not that great on guess. You
could get a tune up, Maybe you get some new
spark plugs and a new air filter. It might be
running a bit rich. You might have a blocked air
filter or something like that. But they are just not

(08:53):
that great on guess. Yep.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
I suppose two thousand and five is long before the
hybrid model came out.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Aaron, you've.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
Got a twenty fifteen rain driver with a problem.

Speaker 8 (09:05):
Yeah, And then to my son about one trip in
twenty it goes into an engine saving mode and has
about ten percent of its normal power. And you can
only just get it home. Been to three mechanics. There's
been the light on the dish, no, no, nothing on
on the dash.

Speaker 10 (09:26):
And.

Speaker 8 (09:28):
Various comments of aut eg r belves and just one
whether we could wondering whether we should remove it and
reprogram it to op break without.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
I would have thought if it's going into limp mode
you would definitely have a light on the dash. But
it will definitely probably be something they will need to
be scanned with a decent scantal have it.

Speaker 8 (09:51):
And we've taken it to the garage when it's in
limp mode and left it running so they can put
the gear on it.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Have you been to a friend franchise dealer or have
you just taken it to have to market guys.

Speaker 8 (10:06):
One franchise and two too experienced guys with the European vehicles. Yeah,
it's just it's got absolutely.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
I get it to get it to a range Rover dealer.

Speaker 8 (10:20):
Yeah, been to arts us in christ Church.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
That one's too tough for.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Over the phone, but yeah, all the beast aaring, I
think we had time for one more cooler.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
Brian, you've got a problem with your problem with your crutch,
problem with your crotch on a sixty eight Mustang there
Brian common problem on the.

Speaker 10 (10:44):
It needs a scratch. Just just consuming my own views. Actually,
i went up to the beach hop and and the
traffic up there was pretty slow. So I've got a
four speed top lader behind a Stroker motor, and I

(11:07):
just and I'm putting my foot down practically in any gear,
I just get a slight weaver of the motive before
detraction starts. You you can feel normally, I should put
my foot down and you feel a card cellar straight away,
but there's a slight rhath and then the white goes.

(11:28):
I'm assuming that clutch plate. And the other question would
be should I replace the clutch and pressure plate and
thrust bearing?

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Also, well, if you do the clutch, you do it
all to the clutches slipping, you should you should be
able to smell it? No, I couldn't just work, Just work,
work in a bit and see if you can make
it slip. If you can make it slip, then it's
probably gone, but you probably be able to smell it
when it does.

Speaker 10 (12:01):
Yeah, alternatively or not the clutch, any any ideas what
might do that?

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Not without driving it? Maybe an ear leak if it's
just hesitating a bit. But if you just yeah, I mean,
if you're driving it, and you obviously know what you're
talking about. When you've got a car like that, most
guys with cars like that do their own work. If
you're sort of feeling it's a clutch, then yeah, you know,
without driving it, I'd probably agree with you. And if
you do, do it, do everything. You're buy a kiss anyway,

(12:32):
so you'll get everything in the clutch kit.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
All the best, Brian, And sounds like a beautiful vehicle.
Sixty eight Mustang in the old beach shop. That sounds
like a good time. One text, one more text here.
Matt just had my transfer case rebuilt on my old
four x four new internals, getting a very quiet wine
when I'm doing eighty k's an hour.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
Is this normal for new gears? Or should I take
it back to get checked.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
Make sure it's got the right oil on't it? Or
are you hearing something else because the transfer case is
no longer noisy? It might be something else. Gears, wine
bearings rumble, So if it's a wine, it's a year.
It could be a difth for or a gearbox. Yeah,
that you've hit the transfer coast done. You might not
be hearing you'll be hearing something that you couldn't hear before. Yeah, so,

(13:16):
but just make sure it's.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Got the right all on it, yep, and potentially take
it back.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Yeah definitely, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Yeah, yeah, very good Matt, You're brilliant is always and
always great to catch up mate. We will do it
again in about a month's.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Time of course. All right, thanks guys, appreciate it. Yep.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
That is Matt the mechanic from exol Autos and Fakatan
and as always, advice off it on. This program has
done in good faith and should always be confirmed by
a physical inspection of your vehicle.
