Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodarkeis Off the Record podcast with Gregren.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Adam Hataway. I agreed whereabouts
in the world are you at the moment?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
I believe him in Melbourne? Melbourne, Australia the only part
of Australia that anyone seems to go to if they
think they have been cool.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's a very cool place. You're right in the middle
of it. Are you on tour in Australia right now?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
We have got a show at the end of next
week and I've got a couple other funny little gigs
while we're here, so it's kind of in the middle
of our New Zealand tour.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It's nice to be able to go so early, when
you know, sometimes when you tour a strange place, you
go in the afternoon and rock out the night and
then drive off afterwards. But a few days your sleep.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
It's pretty cool and we'll getting too old for that.
But the thing is where we're house sitting and so
we can just we're just staying here for free. It's
quite amazing. It's like a lot of brains of mine
have been house sitting around the world and it's a
really good way to be able to travel a little bit,
and for us to be able to do this in
conjunction with touring is like amazing.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Do you do the same thing in New Zealand.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
We've done it a little bit. But I've got friends
who just live in Atatai who always lived there, who
have now just because you know, it's so expensive to rent,
have just started house sitting and haven't even moved out
of their hometown and they just houseit there.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
How does it work exactly? Log onto a website and go,
I'm a house city and then people this person looks
like they could sit in my house.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
It's real easy. Like there's just Facebook pages and you
posted it and they look you up.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Sweet.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Congratulations on the new album that came out last Friday,
High Horse.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, we've done a couple of gigs and the reception
has been really good, and that's the only way that
I've been able to gauge how what the reception is.
We've had some really fun shows and oh, I'm going
to Dunedin and Oath. It's a great way to start
with that. We released album when we were down there,
so that was a great way to start it. Yeah,
and you know, it was just this is the sixth
album we've done. We had Marlon Williams producing, so that
(02:00):
was a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Had you done stuff with Marlon before?
Speaker 1 (02:04):
We played a few bunch of times over the years,
and he did him in one of my music videos
a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
What was he like to work as a producer?
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Very onto it and like full of ideas and to detail.
I guess I want to produce it to be bossy,
but it wasn't the least bit mean about it. Really
great ideas just on all the time, but a really
good positive feeling the whole time.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
We're going to play the title track in a second.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
One thing about the song is that it's kind of
not that representative of the album, like it's a transition
from our old stuff to this new album. And it's
more it's a total rocker, whereas most of the rest
of the album isn't.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
And you singing away about what getting off your high horse?
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Sometimes I get on a high horse. It's a bit
of a boastful number, like the going back to the
old Blues songs. Lyrically, it's a duet and you'll you'll
hear that it's with an Ernie bell.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Let's check it out.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
My name is Adam had Away and the song's name
is high Horse, Andy.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Get on a horse, Get on a little news, then
I go alone. Of course.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
It's Lady a Hurdarchy. That's new from Adam Hataway. It's
called high Horse. It's the title track from his latest album.
And we're lucky enough to have Adam on a zoom
with us now from another part of the world and Melbourne, Australia. Adam,
thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, you're welcome, glad to bring it to you.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
You're saying that song is more indicative of the fifth
album and the transition into the sixth and current album,
High Horse, it goes in a different direction.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, it's a more low key album. It's darker and
moody and atmospheric. There's a few other kind of upbeat
sort of numbers, but it's a lot more minor keys
than major keys.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Any of the songs related to definitive experiences in your life.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Songs about something specific, as a song with if You've
got nowhere else to go, and that's that's about you know,
someone who's quite of the lost soul, who comes around
late at night and kind of welcoming them but also
cautioning them in the way they sort of they are.
And there's a car song my scream Machine, So in
particular song is about one of the band members who
(04:45):
went for a big walk up Chronicle Hill. It's kind
of an odd thing to do, but that kind of
spurred that song. So there are a few little things
that have happened that have influenced songs, but most of
them are, you know, just like an idea like I
don't believe in love, or going out to meet you
in the dark places around town and things like.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
That, right, and this all comes out of you living
in christ Church, but you're touring the country at the moment.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Although Melbourne just Saturday, I'm opening for good friend of
Holaki John too Good in Melbourne, so he just happened
to be here. Well I was here and doing the
opening st for that, so that fed them pretty nicely.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, that's great. And of course he appeared on one
of your songs.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
He's right, Yeah, it came out last year, got him
and for a song called right in the River.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Growing up in christ Church. So do you ever go
and see his band? She had played live. I bring
that up because yesterday they announced that they are breaking
up after the tour next year.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
I've seen them talking and that press conference really reminded
me of the vibe of their documentary.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, yeah, from when they went to America and all that.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, that's quite an interesting story and pretty classic kee
wee music doco. So it reminded me of that. And
I never saw them for some reason, I never saw them.
I was younger, but I he gave me a ticket
to a show maybe two years ago and it was
so that was great to see. They're like, they're the
best at what they do, right.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, exactly that two and next year is going to
be huge. And your tour continues around New Zealand and
support of the High Horse album. Where else are you
going to play?
Speaker 1 (06:19):
You know?
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Ten New Zealanders.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yea our show at the Lens and littleton As the
thirtieth of November, and then we're playing and Tomakimikoto on
the sixth of December at Wami Bar and yeah, everybody's
got to got to come to that one. We're playing
with Adah and he's fantastic. And then and then the
next day we're playing at a festival called Sanctuary sounds
(06:43):
down Hawks Bay then and that's pretty much our tour.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
