Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodarchis Off the Record podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
It's lady, I heard our Let's have a chat with
lab killed A Joel.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
How's it going man? Thanks?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, you too, man, it's been a bit. I think
last time we caught up, you were about to go
overseas and you seem to be taking on the world
in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
The first six months was incredible.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
You know.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
We played in New Zealand summer, then went and played
Blues Fists and Barron Bay, and straight after that we
went to Hawaii, played over there, played a couple of shows,
and then yeah, that the American tour, which was predominantly
West coast of the States. We got to play Denver, Colorado, yeah,
right up kind of close to the top of California,
(00:44):
like the whole thing San Diego.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
So yeah, it was just incredible. Man.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Had you been to any of those places before?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Some of them? Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
The year before we'd toured in the States and got
to see some cool spots, but this year a few
new ones here for sure, Ventura, California and Adelinto kind
of getting inland in California.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
You know, he's getting a little bit warfy.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
There, yeah, right, and what were the locals like in
those places.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Really cool man, Like, you know, we open for quite
an established artists over there, Jay Bog He's got a
massive following, especially on the West Coast, and yeah, you
could feel that that love for his style of music,
and we fitted right in, you know, and got to
play in front of sold out crowds every night.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Wow, So it was you know, he really really has
nailed it over there.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
And some of them like five hundred cap some of
them are two thousand, you know, so yeah, really special, brilliant.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
And then Hawaii you mentioned in there as well.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Yeah, we went over to Hawaii this year and play
Awaikiki and went up and played in Maui, which was
cool for the first time. So that was really special
flying to another island, you know, in Hawaii. So yeah,
I got to see some cool spots, you know, and
you kind of pinch yourself when you're over there playing
your own music, and the kind of why for doing
(01:52):
it becomes stronger, you know, you kind of come home you.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Go, yeah, that's that's why we do it.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
Man.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
You're on tour in the middle of nowhere, and you go,
passion is driving this whole train, you know, and it
was special. You know, there's a few moments on stage
over there. I just felt like, man, I can't believe
this is happening. You know, this is what I dreamed of,
was a kid through in the world playing music.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
A place like Hawaii. Did you get a chance to
do stuff outside of the show, you know, like holiday
sort of stuff like that.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah, yeah, we actually we actually shot a music video
in Hawaii, so we got to do it.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Was on the last day of the.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Tour and real tight airs, and I was like, man, we've.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Got to shoot this video. And it turned out to
be a perfect day.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
And when they got all the long boards out and
we got to hang out the locals, they put on
a feed for us and went out surfing, and you know,
it was just a laugh. You know, there's guys in
the I felt like I was not the Olympics, but
you know, it felt like I was in some kind
of movie where there's the guys in the water following
me surf and I'm like the.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Most terrible surfa you know, and it was just a
good point break or something.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I was like, man, this is what it's like to
be in a surf movie and there's a drone above
me and so that comes out Actually that video comes
out towards the end of the year. But it was
really fun to hang out with the low because they
took us through the land and then put on a
feed and showed us all about, you know, through nature
and that the had the what you caught. Yeah, and
he went into the river thing and he blew it
(03:13):
up into the mountains and it just went like came
back at us. It was like spine thing. It was crazy. So,
you know, we got we've got that experience, which is
really special because I feel like you go to Hawaii
and it's like all you see is the strip, you
know what I mean, Like it's kind of got quite
commercial in that sense. But yeah, I felt like we
got to experience a.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Real Yeah, you weren't going to the shopping malls with
all the chap bargains and that's right.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, Yeah, we felt felt very welcome there.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, brilliant on the other side of the real Hawaii.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
And you mentioned Blues Fest in Australia. Sad to see
that's winding down next and it is.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
You know, and we've been lucky enough to play two
of them. Both times were just absolutely incredible, you know,
just just the vibe of being at a festival that
has so much cutos and so much history. I remember
being a kid seen the lineups on the that festival
and just been like, man, that's the dream, you know.
So yeah, hopefully we get to play it this year
this coming summer, so but maybe not, you know.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
And and it was just he's he created a legacy,
that guy, you know, Peter Nobles.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
So it was an amazing show. Though we've got to
I was gutted it and stay the next night because
Derek Truck's played the next night, the jammed with Tom
Jones in the green room.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I don't know if you saw that video that went viral.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Man, it was like Tom Jones and the Blind Boys
of Alabama and the Derek Trucks are standing in the
background just like not even playing guitar.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I'm like, get that man and guitar, you know, like
you know, well, yeah, special man, it's a real That's
that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
At these festivals, they just brings so many people together,
you know, especially the big ones like that.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I think I saw a video of you guys in
Las Vegas and maybe one of you was playing chess
with some guy who was on the.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Shoe, Yes, Stu, Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was crack up.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
So we're on Fremont Street, you know, it's a busker,
you know, and then the kind of thing and and
Stu goes overgo and he just.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Actually whipped his ass, you know.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
But Stu's good at chess over the sky was just
fast and it's got a crowd around him.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
And when you say whip bisarreters student.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Student, he was like, damn, this guy's good.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I was like, yeah, yeah, it seems like the summertime
now is seeing L A. B. Live and this summer
is no exception.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah, man, we've got we've got three big shows this
year and tartan Uki at the Bowl of Brooklyn's.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Is that the one with the most And.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
That's the one yet with the ducks like swimming across. Well,
you've got ten thousand people in front of it. It's
quite larious, but it's a beautiful venue. And they're playing
in Topour and Funada as well.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
So yeah, where about some topol at.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
The Great Lakes kind of like as you drive in
that big natural amphitheater down the bottom there yeah, so
that they have that that other gig there every year.
You know, it's like Barnsy in that. So we're playing
at that same same spot.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
So you've played in Australia and Hawaii, you played all
over the West coast of America this year. How is
the set and the sound of LB evolving and changing
going into.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Some Yeah, it's definitely.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
You know, the cool thing about playing these, you know,
overseas shows is it allows the band to reinvent certain
things in the set and try different things with that
whole fresh audience. You know, like you play, we play
our bang of songs that are big here that nobody
knows over there, so we get to we changed them up,
like took the crowd callbacks out and put a guitar
solo in, which I'm all about that, but you know,
(06:23):
all that kind of stuff where you get to really
move the set, you know, and we I think that's
why the winter shows went so well, because we had
that tour tight feeling, you know, of the band being
on the road and really wood hitting the songs and so.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Did you keep those guitar solos in?
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Yeah, yeah, well that's the thing, you know, we kept
those arrangements of some of those tracks coming back home
and had to ring up the horns and say, hey,
that one's changed.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Now we do this, you know.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
So it's been cool man, you know, playing these playing
our old songs, but you know, give them that re
kind of fresh, that fresh feeling, you know.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Yeah, you guys have a real summary sound. Is there
going to be any new music going into summer?
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Yeah, so we'll be dropping a couple of singles hopefully
before the end of the year, like definitely before December,
and then just kind of keep me on that last
album that we recorded back and the ended last year,
but that came out in February this year, so we
you know, we still got still got a bit of
stuff to milk off that. Yeah, it's little bit of much,
but we're definitely working on stuff at the moment in
(07:20):
the studio and you know it's just NonStop man.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, great to hear. Look at you live in the
dream mane Yeah yeah, yeah, massive smile on your face.
I'm so happy.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I love it, man, Yeah, I really do. I do. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Well, all the best for your travels and recording and
everything else that's going on. Joel from L A B.
