Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodar Keys Off the Record podcast with
Greg Preble.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with the beat Nicks, Kieder Logan Gooder.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
How are you doing, Greg?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yeah, really well, thanks mate. How's Dneedin been today?
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Pretty cruisy? Pretty around spring this time? It always is
a bit funky with the weather. It kind of back
and forth. You never know what to wear. But other
than that, it's been a pretty pretty cruizy day here
in Donner's.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, right, And you guys in the band have been
hanging out, well not everybody because one of your is
overseas at the moment, but it just take us a
step back. How did the Beatnicks become a thing?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Back in my first year, which would have been twenty
twenty one, I ran into the lovely Sam Charlesworth, who
is the member that is currently obseas at the moment.
He's a solo act from Auckland, and we managed to
form a band around us and we wanted to take
it a bit separated from Sam, solid stuff, and it
became the Beatnicks, hugely inspired by a lot of the
old Nan sound bands like the Clean Vlaines, Street Chicker
(00:57):
Fits all that kind of stuff and obviously the Beatnix
is a bit of an ode to the clean song.
And yeah, we've been playing gigs and shows all around
New Zealand, but but you know, started from the South
Island and Dunedin for almost four years now. Definitely definitely
a strong sense of community here in Dunedin around the
music scene, which is just an awesome to be a
part of.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Have you guys played at that new venue Erics's.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Erics, Yes, we have. Well that's actually where where we
did a bit of dig the gig, which I'm sure
we'll get onto. But yes, that's a new venue that's
opened up. Used to be New New New which is
a brewery and we've played there before and after. It's
now renamed Eric and Eric's and it's awesome. Yeah, it's
a pretty cool venue. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, I keep seeing lots of bands going through there
and think I must check that place out. So take
the gig. You mentioned a university band competition that is
on all over the country at the moment. There's various heats,
various finals, and you guys took out the Dunedin leg
of the competition.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, it was pretty pretty awesome for us to be
able to take that win. Definitely a lot of awesome bands,
and you saw the sense of community grow as the
competition win along. Yeah. It's just a very very cool
event that was able to take place and obviously all
around the country, and we're really looking forward to being
able to showcase that for the finals.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
So that's when all the bands from who were finalists
in each location get together and battle about. And the
thing about this competition is it's judged by the crowd
a decibel meet at whoever gets the loudest response. I
guess you would have been inviting all your mates to
come along and cheer you on.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yep, it was definitely one of those please come along.
You know just how strong a fan your fans are.
But they were really awesome and we're super toughed that
they were able to come down and show their support.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
And whereabouts were you guys on the lineup that night?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, that's a good question because it was one of
those things it's hard not to imagine there's a bit
of a bias being being last, but I think we
were second to last on that final run. Yeah, and
you have three songs in about fifteen minutes to showcase
and we obviously didn't want to repeat where we played
about three times I think in the Dunedin heats, so
you don't want to repeat yourself too much. So we
(02:58):
had just used our catalog off the Archetype album which
Wreck Up Jane was the single for which released late
last year.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Cool and just on Wake Up Jane the.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
First Beat Next single. It was a brainchild of Sam Charlesworth,
as most of the Beatnix songs at least start out
from simple in nature, but definitely kind of showed our
classic rock kind of influences and just having a good
bash and kind of the feeling of Dunedin and just
throwing a song together with a bunch of mates.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Really all right from last year. Let's play tune now
from the Beatnicks. This is wake Up Jane on Radio HDACKI.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
She was a dream, dawn a crop. It means I
won't see her again, stuck under the sheets, wanted tell
how I feel. I can't seem to speak.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
She's stuck in my head.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
The picture perfect phot of grab that times we spell.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Good now then gone, she is too fut.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
In my head.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
She there, It's Lady a hoard Ich. That is the
(04:51):
Beat Next with wake Up Jane, and we're lucky enough
to have logan from the band on a zoom with us.
Now cut to mate, thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
No worries, no worries. Hope you enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
And so there's no specific Jane you had in mind.
But maybe we know a Jane that needs to wake up.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, exactly, you know you take it, take you can
take it and run with it. But no no specific
Jain in mind.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, And so tell us about the band. You mentioned
that Sam who's currently oversees as part of the band.
Who else is there apart from you and Sam?
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yes, So we've got the wonderful Seth Sinclear on drums,
We've got Alex Kendall on the base, bless yourself, and
of course you've got Ollie Childsworth, the brother of Sam.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
That's quite cool having a family connection within the band.
Lots of bands do have that. I'm just thinking of
Kings of Leon, of Stone Temple, Pilots of Oasis. Is
there any of that brotherly tension within you guys from
time to time?
Speaker 3 (05:43):
To be honest, I mean, unless they hide it very well,
I can't I can't see it in the slightest they
get along, get along like a house on fire. So yeah, no,
it's great having that connection in the band, it really,
I think it helps build that connection, especially to the family.
And they're quite well known for surf as well down here,
so there's there's great connection and fan base there all over.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Really, do you guys have a film surfing as part
of your music videos?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Not as music videos? But yeah, the Childsworths are super
into their surfing. They've both got surf pages and have
heaps of media when it comes to surfing. But probably
a good idea really to to start connecting those two.
But no, definitely definitely got lot of footage and a
lot of surf stuff we could use.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Is that why Sam's and Indonesia at the moment is
on a surfing trip?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
He most certainly is. Yeah, with his younger brother, youngest
brother of the Childs.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
With ah, right, so there's more. How many brothers are there?
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Or they keep going, there's three brothers and what about you?
Speaker 2 (06:33):
You keep going? What's the plans next for the beat next?
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah? Great question. So this year we're planning to release
a concept EP with the great Tom Bowell down here
at Chicks Hotel Studios where he's been recently relocated, which
is going to be you know, I hate to say
Pink Floyd, but it's going to be influenced by that
kind of the who Pink Floyd concept album for the
modern generation, modern attention span. So it's only going to
be about twenty minutes long, but all the songs are
(06:58):
going to flow together, kind of act as one big
twenty minute song and have a cool experience really to
take people.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
On nice you know, I was just talking with someone
the other day about how star Dome observatories. I'm not
sure if Dunedin has one of those.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Oh for the Dark Side of the Moon listen party, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I've seen the things for that. I've always wanted to go,
Yeah me to I'm so yeah, but that'd be quite
an experience.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
And we also got onto the conversation as we're talking
about that, because basically, with that situation, you're sitting in seats,
lying down, looking up at a dome screen and the
album is playing and you're just looking at space and
the planets, and it helps you take in the music
in a different way, I suppose. But also Dark Side
of the Moon album synks up with a couple of movies,
The Wizard of oz Have you ever done that?
Speaker 3 (07:44):
I've heard about those connections with Dark Side of the Moon,
how it kind of there's lots of different things that
can kind of mean and yeah, i've heard the Wizard
of oz one is it? Yeah, there's some how very cool,
very very cool.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
And there's the was it Paul mart mall cop no
way really perfection with them.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
That's pretty much.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
You watch the movie and you have that movie playing
as a soundtrack at key moments, things kick in visually
and orally at the same time.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
It's classic. I have to try that one out.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah, maybe you guys want to try that with your album.
If there's you know, you haven't made it yet. Is
there a movie or a short film or something that's
twenty minutes long, an episode of Sopranos and Friends that's
I don't know, Seinfeld or something we all syncs up together.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Yeah, it's not too late. Well, definitely in the works,
and plans would definitely be to make a twenty minute
piece of visual content to go along with the EP
people to watch and go along with.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yeah, so that we no coincidence is there.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
It'll be all planned, all planned, all planned, you know,
there's plenty of time to find the coincidences along the way.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
True. And if we want to keep an eye on
when this stuff comes out, where's the best place to
find information on you guys?
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Our Instagram? Which is the beat Nicks with a couple
of underscores between them?
Speaker 2 (08:55):
And how do you spell beat Nicks b e A
T n i ks or two underscores between the and Beatnicks?
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Correct?
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, got it, Logan from the Beatnicks. Thanks for your
time on hodaki.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
