Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hold Our Keys Off the Record podcast
with Greg Treatment. Let's have a check with the Butler's
Cure to George.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Sure, Greg, how are you mate?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Yeah? Really well, thanks Mane. How's the band been this
twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Man, it's been a really cool year.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Actually, we kind of started things off by signing a
label deal in our first one.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Been together for seven years, and we kind of got.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Approached and found what we think is a really good
partner and we're really happy with the structure of the deal.
It's kind of more of a strategic kind of distribution
partnership and there's no kind of puppeteer strings and the
creative control side, which we were really really hobbling to
say protective of, but just making sure that we still
had those strings in our corner with this deal.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Were there some members of the band who were more
into the fine print and really getting into the nitty
gritty and others it's like, yeah, there's business stuff. I'm
just the creative here.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
We're all pretty useless when it comes to that stuff,
to be honest, man.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
We ended up working with a really awesome entertainment of
music lawyer here in christ Church, Dan Chisholm, who is
in a couple of bands here in Crash Chips too.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
He's the drummer from Vaults, isn't he?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yes? Correct, So he was amazing and he did such
a good job.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
And as a drummer it must be cool to just
chat with a lawyer about law stuff and then about
drumming as well.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, my wife's a lawyer too, so I've been pretty
interested in the whole law side. But yeah, I did
slip in the old mL and between the very important
ones asking how drumming was going. So it's good to
keep it casual in between the strictly business stuff.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
What kind of crash some balls are using?

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Now?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, I've gone up to a nineteen inch on my
right hand side of my setup.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
You know, what are you rocking these days?

Speaker 1 (01:41):
And at some point you've come up with the song
painting my roof again? Does this come about by actually
someone painting the roof and the band or is it
a metaphor?

Speaker 3 (01:50):
It's a great question. It does come from someone actually
painting his roof. It's wild lead singer.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I'd know. The last few times we've talked to you.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
He's been on intrepid travels through mix and he did
another stint again this year and had an RV and
from what I can remember, it was leaking and I
think he had to paint some sort of ceilant around
it to keep the leaks out. Well, yeah, that makes
sense because one of the lines in it is after
that is stopping the leaks from coming in.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
So yeah, written about that.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
And then essentially it's kind of just like a bit
of an upbeat kind of It's almost got a bit
of a bluesy swing to it in the chorus too,
but just like a bit of lamenting for what's at home,
missing missing home a little bit, but also like looking
towards the future.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah, So where was this v W when I had
the leak? Where in the world was he in?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Mexico?

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Mexico? And are you a bit of a diy Have
you ever had to jump up on the roof and
do the whole silicone thing?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
I'm a horrific diy man, Greg, No good man, no
good I.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Had to do the silicone thing with the old corrugated
iron roof as a little hole here in there.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
You just get up there, Greg.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Give it a correct So yeah, I love the idea
of doing a bit of DIY in a tune, not
just and creating it, but in essence the subject of it.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yeah, and I use our nature is pretty die word too,
like recording our music and our in our storage unit
now which we'll sound proved and kind of cut it out.
It's always been quite diy and not very organic, hence
the kind of like wanting the creative control, going back
to that.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Label deal, you know. So it's the DIY nature has
always been there for sure.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I'll talk about backbones. Let's let's hear the tune, shall we?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Sure to fine notes?

Speaker 3 (03:25):
George here from the Butlers, and you're listening to Painting
my Roof again on the best radio Hodaki.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Pain in my roof again, stopping the leaks from coming.
It's been a long winner. It's been a long time
since I fell like.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
But here I am.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
I'm on my I need you more than you know,
and I gotta bedding ball. Don't bend in my chest.
Then it slows me down when I can't find the

(04:12):
words to set a lou thing down.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
But here I go.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
I'm on my two. I need you more than you no.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
So hold me, don't go Why down the windows in
the radio and play it last drive down side with
no one nowhere. We are, I'm going down singing I

(04:49):
need you more.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Than you know.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
You gotta warm embrace.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
It's rady. I heard that is Bran new from the Butler's.
It's called painting my Roof Again. And we're lucky enough
to have George on the from the band on a
zoom with us now cure George, thanks for bringing us
that tune.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Oh thanks thanks for paying Greg love.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
The support, George, Is that part of a wider collection
of tunes? Is there an album coming soon? From your eyes?

Speaker 3 (06:00):
We've probably got ten singles not in production yet but written,
and we really like the idea of releasing singles and
trying to get one out every two months for the
next maybe calendar year, just consistently showing up in people's
algorithms and you know, metaphorical or digital letterboxes if you like,
and then maybe at some stage we'll package up what
we feel like is a nice collection of songs.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
There's no real theme at the moment.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
We're really just liking when a song feels right and
when we're playing it really nicely in the unit. We'll
just get our producer Lamb to come in with this
stuff and hit record hopefully and especially over the next
few weeks, we're going to really start to record some
stuff in between two of dates. So yeah, exciting times
to get and consistent music, which is a really nice feeling.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
You guys have built your own jam space and an
old container you've kitted it out. Is that where you
record your stuff as well?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, The last two singles Babe, I Miss You and
Paining My Roof Again we're recorded in our nine by
seven single garage, Geordie our bass player, and it made
of our safety Boy soundproof It built armproofing and on
the walls and the roof. It's just four concrete walls essentially,
but sounds really nice in there. And as a drummer
like being able to hear the drums come through like
that in a single garage. It's pretty incredible really. But

(07:11):
there's no other place we feel that comfortable recording music
that we really want to sound right, you know. So
it's a massive win for us and a really really
big one.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
I bet the neighbors are happy with the soundproofing too.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Well. The thing is we're surrounded by lots of storage
units and there's probably upwards of about twenty bands in there.
A bit great little money dock o to just go
in there and have a look at all the bands.
Like you drive through and there's a honky Tonk band
first on you're right, and then there's a death metal
and a couple of indie bands in between, and then
there's us around the corner. So it's a great way
space and we've we're sometimes there through into the wars

(07:45):
in the morning and it's all very industrial, so we're
lucky to get away with no complaints.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Yeah, well, you've had time in the space. I think
it's time you got out of the space and hit
the stage. And that's what you're doing this weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Yeah man, Yeah, starting our five day tour of New
Zillen the Saturday in Queenstown, Mount Monganui and Wellington next
weekend and the weekend after that is Auckland in our
hometown show here in christ Church. So we haven't played
Paying My Roof again live yet, so that'd be super
super exciting to get that one out there and see
how it goes and just you know play. We're getting

(08:19):
some of the old ones back to which is really nice.
About an hour's worth of old ones, new ones and
the ones in between. So no, I'm really really excited
to get back into it.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
We're going to unpack those dates a little bit next weekend.
It was Mount Monganui and Wellington.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Friday the twenty seventh, and Mount Monganuy at Totta Street
Saturday the twenty eighth, and Wellington at San France after
the All Blacks game. So if you're going to the
AB's get down afterwards and have a big old party
with us. Yeah. Nice Auckland fourth of October at Nick
of the Woods and Saturday for October Cross Church at
the Loons in Littleton.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah. Great, And you've got all these details somewhere.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
The Butler's Music dot Com. We've got all our tour
dates and tickets there.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Just before we go, we're going to play that new
Fontaines DC track shortly. I understand you're a massive fan
of that band. Right now.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I just got the last week. I just got the
new album the love Heart logo. I got it turned
on my leg.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Wow, the new album Romance and you the pink love
heart that's on the front, that's on your leg.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
It's on my leg. Man. I'm a huge fan.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
We used to play Boys in the bedland at the
end of all our sets, and so stoked to see
that they're just like having a weir mini but quite
large blow up overseas right now. Yeah, massive fan, We're
all huge fans. Love their songwriting. This new album's really cool.
I feel like it's we're kind of going in a
similar tradictory in terms of like this albums.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
There's no real theme to it.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
They're all quite different songs, and I feel like if
we package up some singles it'll be quite similar in
a way that it's no real thing, but all just
like amazing songs and they're on right.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Have you listened to it? Greg?

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Absolutely, It's one of my favorite albums of this year.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Same yeah, same, probably my favorite of the year.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Did you find there was a bit of the chills
vibe to some of the songs?

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yeah, Man, great comparison, great comparison in the modern world.
But the kind of slow ones where you can really
hear Green the lead singers. I don't know, his vocals
have never sounded better in my opinion, just like a
lot more control and emotional control. The slower ones are
very chelsy. Yeah, quite a Dunedin sound. Old school Dnedan sound.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Yeah, I'd love to know if they have been into
the Dunedin sound there.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Is, man, that would be cool. They love coming to
New Zealand.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
I hear that coming next year, so yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
It sounds like that's the go I don't think.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
I mean, we saw them in front of two hundred
and eighty people in christ Church and I see it
after the show to my mate's like, that'll near that
happen again the next time they're here.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
They'll be selling out, you know, like who knows town halls?
You know.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Well, I feel like we could talk about the Fontaines
DC band all night.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah we're really good man, You've got me at the
right fandom time.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Man, I'm just a big fan boy.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
So yeah, great stuff. George the Butler's thanks for your
time on Headache.
