Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodarkeys Off the Record podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with the Dead Zephyrs cureder Ryan,
how are you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Really well? Thanks mate? How is Masterton?
Speaker 3 (00:14):
This evening raining and the Yeah, the aesthetic is very
New Zealand in June today?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yeah right, oh, but plenty of good times coming your
way courtesy of your band, the Dead Zephyrs.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
We've actually been together for a long time, almost ten
years as of next year. We've been the Dead Zephyrs
and we've sort of all come from different walks of life. Jordan,
our drummer, was a metal drummer over in Europe, played
with Agent and El sch Long. I was a contract vocalist.
I used to do national anthems for international hockey tests
and other bits and pieces like that. Our guitarist, Brian
(00:49):
is from San Francisco. He's played in the thrash scene
all throughout the late eighties and early nineties. And Chris
is a local boy whited UPO. He's been in dozens
and dozens of bands throughout his lifespan and great he
is just a great bass player. I'm very blessed with
the boys. I've got my.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Band now, some bands have started in kitchens. Some bands
have started from someone putting an ad in a newspaper,
specially ten years ago. How did you guys actually get together?
The four of you.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I have been harassing the wided up of music scene
for a very long time trying to get something started.
Chris came along my bass player, about ten years ago,
and he sort of just stuck by me. Ever since.
Shortly after that we had Jordan, our drumma, come and
join us. We sort of walk past him on the
street and was like, oh, hey, you're a drummer, what
(01:34):
are you up to? And he's like, Oh, I've actually
just just left this band and I'm not really doing
anything at the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
How could you tell he was a drummer walking on
the street. Was he tapping on his legs or something?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Oh? No, it's the Masterveen scene is so small that
you like, everybody knows everybody right. You know of these
people before you even meet them half the time. And
Brian came along as our sort of lead guitarist, and
it's just felled out the sound so fantastically, and the
crowd process is so much easier with someone who has
the experience of playing virtually forty years with the guitar,
(02:06):
so wow. Yeah, it's definitely an interesting sound now.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, and just something you said earlier, you were in
Europe singing national anthems for hockey teams.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
So that they were all local, they were all here,
So I was doing solo acoustic stuff, just me bashing
on a guitar, and a couple of times the guy
that would come and set right up front was the
was the head of Hockey New Zealand, and for whatever reason,
he just really enjoyed my singing voice and he had
(02:35):
me come along and sing national anthems. I've done national
anthems for New Zealand, Australia, the US, and I learned
Urdu so I can do the Pakistani national anthem as well.
Pretty challenging to be honest, like you're learning a whole
different language, not really knowing what I was saying, but
you know, like sort of trying to get the cadences
down and try to do it justice, you know, especially
(02:58):
when you're doing it live in front of the national team.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah yeah, yeah, nice work. Give him a taste of Keilly, eh.
Good on you. So the four of you are now
the Dead Zephyrs. And at some point you've come up
with this new song, mister Sticks.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
This might be a little bit of an exclusive as well,
So we don't really broadcast what the song is about
because it's such a small town and sort of, like
I said, everybody knows everybody. But I will tell Radio
Hodechi that the song is about our ex drummer. So
the drummer we had before Jordan, that was a bit
of a messy split. So you channel that energy into
this and that, and I channel the energy into writing
(03:33):
a song called mister Sticks. It's yeah, it's out there
in the world now, so I think you'll figure it
out at some stage that the song itself is sort
of our take on old rock. We're very blues influenced,
and when I say we, I mean me. The boys
are not hugely into it, but yeah, I'm a very
blues influenced musician mixed with you know, Chris and Brian
(03:56):
having more of a psychedelic influence, and then the heavy
side comes out from Jordan's so all of those things amalgamated.
I like to think that it's not too dissimilar from
bands like Queens of the Stone Age, I guess, or
one of my favorite bands of all time is led Zeppelin,
so there's definitely themes in there as well.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
It's about a drummer. It's called mister Sticks. Is there
a drum solo in there?
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Oh? You know what this should be, but there's not.
Jordan treats every performance like a drum solo, goops off,
putting in little shuffles and bits and pieces. So the
whole thing is sort of an homage to drummers, if
you will.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, nice, Well, let's check it out New from the
Dead Zephyrs. This is mister Sticks on radio headache.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Do you hear, sir, mister Sticks? You can rock damn
care but you made mistick.

Speaker 3 (05:36):

Speaker 6 (06:57):

Speaker 2 (08:55):
It's riding a horde and that is brain new from
the Dead Zephyrs. It's called Mister Sticks and we're lucky
enough to have Ryan from the band on a zoom
with us now, Kilder Ryan, thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Oh, no worries. I hope you guys enjoyed it. It's
been a long time coming. We haven't had anything released
for about seven years, so this being our very first
single since we recorded with TK at the Armory and
Wellington in like twenty seventeen.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
And where did you make this one?
Speaker 3 (09:21):
This one was at the Lab Studios in Auckland. We
were lucky enough to win Battle of the Bands last
year at the national competition and one of the prizes
was a day of a studio with Ollie from the
Lab and he absolutely brought out the best in us
that day. We honestly can't wait to go back. He's
just such a fantastic engineer.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
So, apart from making more songs, what is the rest
of twenty twenty four hold for the Dead's efforts?
Speaker 3 (09:46):
There's been a lot of gig offers, which has been great.
We'll be playing in Wellington at Meow with Mister Unit,
Electric Tapestry and David the Dooty Humans. When's that show
going to be October twelfth?
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Excellent, Yeah, David, The Humans are a big sound of
that band.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, they're fantastic. Yeah. Ben and the boys really really
bring the thunder every single time. We did our mister
Steck's release show on the thirty first of May and
they came and played with us over here in Marsterenden.
Just a great bunch of lads. They always bring a
really nice energy and they're fantastic on and off stage too,
Like I honestly couldn't recommend them higher.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
So that's October, that's springtime, and then looking ahead to summer,
any plans at the stage, we're still putting that together.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
No, so we've got we're playing a festival called the
Nui Hui which is in Wanuiyamana, and we've also been
booked for next year's summer Hummer in the Whited Upper,
which is sort of the annual big festival that the
Wided Upper puts on.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
I've got to say these names of these festivals just fantastic.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Yeah, well they some hummers been around for a long time.
Nui huey I'm not too familiar with. I'm not even
sure of the date on that one at the stage,
I just know that we're booked for it, and then
the surrounding shows were sort of It's kind of hard
because I mean, we're all dads ural family men, so
finding the time between full time work and family stuff
(11:08):
and whatever else is on the plate as the hardest bit.
But we aim to play at least a show a month.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Nice, So if we want to check out any of
these gigs, or just go back and check out that
song again that introduced us to before mister Styx by
your band, The Dead Zephyrs. Where's the best place to
find some information?
Speaker 3 (11:27):
We're on all social media platforms TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube,
It's always the Dead Zephyrs on.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Any of those social media platforms. The Dead Zephyrs, Yes,
and you spell it the de e a D dead obviously,
but then Zephyrs is z e pH y r s Yes.
Ryan from the Dead Zephyrs, thanks your time on HIDARCHI.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
