Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodarkeys Off the Record podcast with Greg Preble.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Wet Denim cure to.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Nick Gotta, thanks for having men.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, no worries, mate. Whereabouts in the country are you
this evening?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Currently in the capital pornakee, Wllington?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is where Wet Denham formed, right, there's four of
you in the band. There's a couple of brothers. But
Wellington is your hometown as a band.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Correct, Yeah, twenty twenty two. We all formed here together.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
And who had the wet denim?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
The wet Denim was had originally by a friend of
the band called Katie. Actually she yeah, came home one
day with sort of full double denim or all wet
from the Walington we're they're and that's sort of where
it was birthed.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
All right. So Katie has that esteemed honor of being
having the band named after her. Have you honored her
in some way by PEPs writing a song about her
or dedicating something to her?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
No songs yet, but plenty of interview features.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, she's brought up a lot. Yeah right, yeah, yeah, Okay,
is Wellington where you're from?

Speaker 3 (01:09):
So probably Luca would be the closest to being from Wellington,
He's originally from Lower Harts. I was originally grew up
in Timidoo brothers Jack and Joe from Hawks Bay Up
and Havelock, North Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
And so was it a UNI thing that got you
all together?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Well, yes, it was so. Joe and I were in
the same year at MASSI doing commercial music. Jack and
Luca a couple of years older than us, and they
were also at MASSI during their respective design degrees.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And how did you guys all meet? Was it an
O Week thing? Was it just something in the some
sort of communal area where bumped past each other or so.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
It was To be honest, all credit to Jack and
Joe being brothers. So Joe sort of recruited me from
seeing me at an open mic night during O Week
and Jack had recruited Luca from his flatting situation. So
that was sort of how the four of us united.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
And two years on, how things going going strong.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
We've spent the past five months over in nam Melbourne,
which yeah, saw our sort of first run of international shows.
We had residency at the Evelyn Hotel in June and
a number of headline shows following that without our first
show of the tour, which was at Northcotte Social Club,
which was our biggest international show to date, which was

(02:33):
pretty special. We started picking up some good momentum towards
the end of us Stay Yeah it's all good, sort
of started building a cool fan base, really great energy
at the shows. No, it was it was awesome Ausies,
They're down for it.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Wellington is a city, is pretty cool, he's a great vibe.
Melbourne is kind of similar, but just on a bigger scale.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
One yeah, one hundred percent. There were definitely comparisons to
be made within POC of the scene over there, but
it was Yeah, it was honestly just a massive version
of over there. It gets said a lot that Melbourne
is sort of the bigger Wellington. It's definitely a lot
bigger and it has yeah, similar vibe, cool, yeah, cool

(03:15):
little pockets of community and of music scene happening over there.
It was pretty special to get amongst that.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
How many gigs do you reckon? You did while you're
in Australia.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Well, I think we almost clopped fifteen.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
So you went just based in Melbourne, you went all
over Australia, the East Coast. Where else did you go?

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Just quite the privilege to spend some time seeing the
sight seeing a bit of warmer weather, beautiful thirty degree
weather up in New South Wales.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Nice. Yeah, that's a far cry from what Wellington said
this week.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Oh, far cry from the Melbourne winter as well. It was.
It was a bit of a shock, to be honest,
but yeah it was cool.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
So the EP is out and at some point you've
come up with this new song called The Why.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Oh yeah, so the Why predates our time in Australia.
It was a writing trip to my family batch in
Riversdale Beach actually in the beginning of twenty twenty three. Yeah,
the boys and I will spent the weekend over there,
brought a bunch of music equipment. Over the vibe of

(04:24):
being in the batch and right on the beach front
informed just how we felt creatively, and we just decided
that we'll put a pin in that and just start
this thing completely afresh. And within twenty four hours we
had the first demo written and recorded of the y
and yeah, it's reflective of how you can feel grounded
and certain locations and yeah, it's a pretty special one

(04:48):
for us.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Well, let's check it out.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, gold it's Nick Goodwin from with dinnerm And you're
listening to the Why on radio Hurdarchy.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Ma's on the line, My man's on the Y. You know,
it's on the line.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Mine on.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Lass.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
It's already a heard that is new from wet Denner.
It's called The Y and we're lucky enough to have
their singer Nick on a zoom with us now Killer Nick,
thanks for bringing us at tune.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, I hope you guys enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Nick. You said you guys went to a batch.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Riversdale Beach and they waited upper family batch of mine
that we've been grew up going there.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Situation like many houses, there is a town, is a dairy.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
There is a dairy. The shop there the famous shop
of Riversdale. Yeah, it's just it's a small, small, wee
coastal town. I guess it's a town. It's pretty small.
There's a golf club and yeah, it's sort of two
hours south of Castle Point, forty five minutes from Marsterden. Yeah,
it's a beautiful spot of the country.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Are you a golfer, No, I am.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
I'm mostly not a golfer. I wish I was, but
I can never quite hack it left handed. So it's
hard to come by left handed clubs.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, that's true. So you went to the batch and
you looked out at the sea and the Y came
to you. And now it's out and it's part of
a new EP.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah. So the EP is called on the Line has
a few different meanings. Really it is. It is a
lyric from the Y. Can mean you know, with Denham
hanging up on a washing line with dinerm on the
on the recording on the line and then yeah, on
the line is the lyric from from the song the Y.

(06:57):
It's a seven track EP, it's a sophomore EP, and yeah,
it's sort of it's our most collaborative work today. All
four members of the band have have a song that
sort of originated from one of us on topics of
love and addiction and feeling grounded. It's definitely heard through

(07:20):
the Y. Relationships.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Are you guys in relationships at the moment? Are you
all single?

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Three of the other three strong relationships?

Speaker 2 (07:33):
But you're not?

Speaker 3 (07:34):
No, not not currently.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Well, if anyone wants to get in touch with Nick,
we'll ask him about contact details in a moment. So
the EP is that is there any thought to do
some live shows around the release of.

Speaker 2 (08:46):

some really cool support.

Speaker 3 (08:51):

we really really digging at the moment and honestly wanted
to have an opportunity to favor them live, see them
live and collaborate on a lineup.
