of all the sport your need and coming up. In
this podcast, we're joined by Justin Marshall, former All Black halfback,
as we look at the makeup of the All Black
team named today to take on Fiji in the States
on Saturday. I climb in with an opinion on state
(00:42):
of origin or more's the point island of inception? Does
n z our need to try and replicate the joy
of the made against mate, the state against state, so
on and so forth, And then were joined in the
chamber by a longtime colleague, mister Jason Pine, as we
take a look at the All Blacks team, at the
state of origin and at the white ferns, out of sight,
(01:06):
out of mind. We see all that and more coming
out on Sports Fix. Let's get into it.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
In other news, checking out some of the big sports
stories around today. The Open Championship underway tonight at Royal
troon four Key we golfers taking part, Ryan Fox, Michael Henry,
Kazumi Kabori and Daniel Hillier.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
It's going to make sure I don't try too hard.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
I guess it's very easy to try and do too much,
I think when you're preparing for a.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Major, and certainly been guilty of that in the past.
Speaker 6 (01:36):
So yeah, just try and treat it like any other
event and golf to talking again. Staying on that side
of the world, resh Cutter passes one stage seventeen on
the Tour de France.
Speaker 7 (01:45):
Richard catterpass turns the corner and he'll be able to
see the finish line.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He's hat the yellow jersey and now he adds the
stage when.
Speaker 6 (01:55):
Take a bar Taday Pagatcha continues to wear the leaders
yellow jersey and nineteen ninety Commonwealth Games box and gold
medalist Michael Kenny has died at the age of sixty.
He won the super heavyweight division at the in Commonwealth Games.
Speaker 7 (02:09):
To keep moving, mind tam seconds remain the cronic consensu
I'm not kind of stuff out.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Hine and Dussy Waldegrave and
it's warm.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Welcome to the podcast to Justin Marshall, former All Black
halfback and commentator, A man with his finger on the
pulse of New Zealand. A rugby team announced today Justin
to take on the Fijians in San Diego. And is
it fair to say this is proper gander for one
of a better phrase? Yeah, it's still a relevant test match,
but really they want to display that's going to encourage
(02:54):
the Americans to climb on and boots and all to
the game of rugby union Fiji via the All Blacks.
He couldn't ask for much more than that in that case,
Am I wrong?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
No, You're not wrong.
Speaker 8 (03:05):
You know, obviously when whenever Fiji play, they for sure
entertain no doubt about the fact that they've improved a
lot in the last three or four years.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I think with the inclusion of the Indrua.
Speaker 8 (03:17):
Into Super Rugby, they very quickly realize that if they're
going to compete in that competition, they need to sure
up their set piece and their rockwork, and I think
that's flowed onto the national team as well, where they've
had some pretty amazing results in recent years, including beating
England for the first time ever at Twickenham last year.
So they All bet are a team that can look
full of razzle dazzle, they equally now have a little
(03:40):
bit of structure about them as well. So yes, I
think we'll see to a degree some free flowing rugby.
But equally, you know, you've got to think about the
fact that the way the All Blacks want to play,
they don't want to enter into the game of sevens
with Fiji. They want to probably set piece them, play
terrory style game and not allow the game to open up.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
So I'm very fascinated how it unfolds.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
To be honest, when you look at the naming of
the team, the thing that stands out, like the Dog's proverbials,
is the lack of experience.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Especially off the bench.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Ethn the group twenty four caps, Jordy Barrett, fifty nine,
Nadawah just the one. The rest of them are all
as green as they come. Does that Philly with excitement
or fear?
Speaker 5 (04:23):
What do we read into that? What might happen?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Well?
Speaker 8 (04:26):
I think probably the mindset is that what the All
Blacks will want to do is dominate this game, and
dominate it from the early stages and from the outset,
make sure that they establish points and try and keep
Fiji well away from them on the scoreboard so that
when they do introduce those rookie players players on debut
(04:48):
that the game is secure and they can go out
there without the pressure of having to try and win
a test match.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
The test match.
Speaker 8 (04:54):
Basically has hopefully already won when they get their opportunity
to go out there and being all black for the
first time, I think that's what the mindset will be. Obviously,
the only fly in the ointment Dahasi will be if
that doesn't unfold. But I wouldn't imagine that then Scott Robertson,
knowing him and his coaching staff, would then throw those
players into the mixer in a difficult situation. I think
(05:17):
he would just leave the starting fifteen out there to
work it out until they get the job done and
let those players then go on and enjoy their test
daboos in a better environment.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Starting to see some more of Scott's fingerprints on this
all black side, I.
Speaker 8 (05:33):
Think it's a bit early at this stage to see
that influence. I feel that there are some elements that
are you're starting to be able to see, particularly in
the second test, but it was still a.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Struggle, wasn't it. It was a really.
Speaker 8 (05:45):
High quality test match where the opposition pushed the All
Blacks all the way until the final play of the game.
So that doesn't fill you with a massive amount of
I guess goodwill and confidence that everything is one hundred
percent right. That it's still a work in progress, and
I think that's not a bad thing. That's not something
that would be unusual when a new coach comes in
(06:06):
and takes over a side and looks to bring his
own innovation and his own thought process and culture into
a group that has been probably under the same type
of culture and game plan for a decade, you know,
from Hanson onto Stu for onto En Foster, they've probably
had they've had all the same staff and they've had
(06:26):
all the all the same cultural sort of weekly things
that they have in a test match, you know. So
that that will be a change for the players as well,
and it will take a little bit of time to adapt,
so I expect things to grow. Darcy, I don't think
it's fully exposed at this stage.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
Stuve Foster. I'd love to see the bear.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Coaching where that comes from.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Goodness, let's look at an area of expertise, specifically for yourself.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
That is obviously the half back role.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Courtiz atma As got the start after doing well last week,
very well coming off the bench. And it's a guy
who wasn't really even supposed to be in the mix,
but he is and he's no hope to so that selection.
What does that say to you? And what does that
say about Finley Christie's future? Are we going to see
(07:16):
him again?
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (07:18):
Look, I think he's He's had a pretty probably full
on last six weeks, Finley Christie, and I think that
just started to show, you know, in the Test match
last weekend and then obviously he was injured, so that
that's probably been factored into the equation as well. Equally, Yeah,
you're right, Cortez came on under difficult circumstances. Premeditation would
(07:41):
have been when he was going to come on, but
it didn't work out that way. So he was thrown
into the fire in a situation where the Test match
was not secure and there was tension, and to run
on for your debut there and no, not get overawed
by I think his performance, the way that he conducted
himself as maturity has earned him his start and I
(08:01):
think they probably saw enough there that they feel that
he can go on in that type of situation. Will
certainly he can start a Test match for the All
Blacks and he probably deserved his opportunity equally. Noah Hotham, well,
what a meteoric rise it is for him. With TJ.
Peranara injured. We don't know the extent of find their
Christie's injury. He now knows he's that next cab off
(08:24):
the rank and that feels quite good too. You know,
you don't know where you sit when you don't get selected,
but you kind of wonder where you are if you're
even in the conversations. Well, Noah Hotham found that out
by being included when Peranara was injured, and now he's
actually found himself on the bench and most likely to
make his All Black debut.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
So imagine how he's feeling. Must be amazing.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with Jason Fain and
Darcy Waldegrave.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
State of Origin, without a doubt is a spectacular occasion.
The three games throughout the middle of the NRL season
are something to behold. Initially I was a Maroons fan.
Intially I really enjoyed barracking for Queen saying ane because
I lived there five months way back in the day.
But as time has gone on, I've lost interest in
(09:13):
supporting either team because I'm simply not from either state.
What I do like, though, what I do enjoy, and
I think this is the same for all of us
if you're not locked in one camp or the other,
is the quality of the engagement. It's the pinnacle of
rugby league. Sorry internationals, but let's face it, it is.
It's every year and it brings something out of the
(09:36):
players that.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Simply cannot be bought.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
It's about passion, it's about aggression, it's about testosterone, it's
about speed, it's about everything we love in contact sports
like rugby league. So lessons out of this, well, I
think it's fairly obvious, even though this has been broached before.
I think NZR need to go and reimagine what goes
on within the season of rugby domestically, and I count
(10:02):
Super Rugby as domestic. Let's face it, where do we
sit something like this, How engaged would it be to
the fan base and would it actually work? I think
two weeks after the Super Rugby Final you go for it.
Be at one game or a series of games. It
doesn't matter a possibles, the probables, but more importantly a
North Island via South Island taken from your first MPC team,
(10:26):
I don't know, probably taken from where you played first
fifteen rugby, and then creating that atmosphere, that energy between
the North Island and the South Island. I believe in
time will be something that the rugby fans here in
New Zealand will love and of course overseas audiences will
get a kick out of it as well. You imagine,
(10:47):
say Court coming up against Noah Holton, the list goes on.
I think that passion will slowly but surely build. You
won't get instant classics, but I'm sure in time it'll
end up being a keenly anticipated clash, one that the
fans will turn up to en mass and one that
hopefully would generate the same path that we get out
(11:09):
of state of origin.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
Time to convene in the Chamber.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
Let's kick around some of the sporting issues that have
kicked themselves into our focus today, starting with the All
Blacks to play Fiji Saturday afternoon. San Diego dars any surprises.
I don't think there are any surprises here, are there?
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Or are there?
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Well, you could say it's almost an Irish team because
it's so green.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Sorry, but it.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Is when you look at the bench and you look sorry,
when you look at the players coming off the bench
and the relative and experience lo ethn the group's got
tests to Jordy Barrett's got tests. No, maybe one or
two when you go and the rest of them, they
are all come down in the last shower.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Now.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
That is I'm presuming Jason hoping that the run on
fifteen can dismiss the threat of the Fijian's early doors,
because that's a lot of youth, the young blood coming
off the bench here, the.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
Noah hoth In one.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
Trust me, I can only assume that Finlay Christie is
not fit because Noah Hotham was sort of a He
was a.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Call up when t J.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
Petnada got injured, obviously as the third half back, half
back cover. And yet all of a sudden over in
San Diego, he's going to get a test.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Stable.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
If I'm Finlay Christie and I'm fit, I'm not sure
how I feel about that.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
I suppose I've got Darry Rowling in as well, thanking
his old teammate to he Pilotu that he's getting a role.
So guys from even outside the squad are all being recognized.
I think it's a fair point about Finley Christie. But look,
let's back. Can we look back at what happened over
the weekend and say, hey, CORTIZTMA he played a better
game he was. He was a lot more involved, he
(12:53):
was quicker, he played good heads up football. So I
think he made the most of what was a pretty
difficult audition.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Yeah, one hundred percent.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
And I think you look forward and you think about
the one two punch that that cam Roy guard and
Cortiez last time I might provide in the years ahead,
and it's a pretty enticing prospect. No, I hope m Look,
he's a very promising young halfback. I just wonder what
Finlay Christie's role to play in the All Blacks will
be once everybody's fit. I guess we'll wait to find out.
Delighted to see Billy Procter there darts. From an entirely
(13:21):
biased Hurricanes' point of view, he's been the best Hurricanes
player over the last two years if you can buy
in those two seasons. And yeah, I'm just delighted to
see how he goes from the start alongside the old
head of Anton, Lennart Brown.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
I like the way they've done this.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yeah, when you look at this, this is a reward
for paying your dues. And I know that's a cliche
thing to say, but you look, Billy Proctor has been
around a bit. He's done the work, he's listened to
the coaching stuff, he's listened to the beable upstairs, and
he's adjusted his game convincingly as you'd see sign with you.
I think it's great news for Billy Proctor. At the
start of the season you said he was in with
(13:56):
an all black shot.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
I don't know about that, but every post winner good on.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
There, absolutely right, yep, say okay, so two thirty Saturday afternoon,
no doubt. We'll chat more about this in the chamber tomorrow.
But I want to ask about state of origin. I
know this is you know something that every you know
every year the three wednesdays where state of origin falls.
You make sure that you are unencumbered by responsibility because
I know you love state of origin. What did you
make of the decider.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Last night, well aside the fact they chose to use
handbags at four paces again, which is almost a little
cliche talking about that before.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
It's kind of you expected.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
But that switch that is flicked by all of the
players once they get out there, it's very very hard
to temper that. And I think the referees they let
a webit go on origin, don't they. They let a
webit go to add to the excitement and the fever
of the match, So you can accept that. As far
as the game itself, I don't know if I've seen
(14:50):
a more brutal, high paced, intense, high skilled forty minutes
of orange and football thin every year, I fear myself
saying this.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
Pony absolutely love and that I was almost hoping for
a nil all at halftime. I just think that would
be just so unique, obviously, but just I just that
would be quite cool that all of that skill and
passion and commitment and tough tackling and all that mill
all at half time.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
I think that would have been quite cool.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Bradman best amongst a number of new South Welshmen looking
very very good looking. The partner I suppose you've got
to look at Jerome Lure and what he's provided in
the absence of Nathan Cleary, who's arguably the best half
in the game.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
So like, good work, Batman, good work.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:35):
Well, on the Blues, they state of origin when it's
for the first time in three years, just before we
exit the chamber, the white ferns. I'm not quite sure
what we do about the white ferns. I had actually
forgotten that there was any more games. That's how kind
of you know. They've slipped away from my consciousness. The
fifth T twenty this morning, they've lost all five, following
their three losses on the One Day internationals oh and
eight against admittedly a good England's side.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
But are there any green shoots here at all? I
don't know. Because it wasn't on TV.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
I have to download it from somewhere and that's way
too much of a stretch myself when there's other sport
on I was in game, I didn't.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
Really want to.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
I looked on krickin, I looked at the scores when
I just don't think I can go near that.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Here's what you do, Jason.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
You take a sledgehammer, you smash off the rear vision
mirrors and you look toward what's happening in Bangladesh in
a couple of months time, and that is the T
twenty I World Cup. But something's got to change in
those next two months around where they head because this
team is stagnated and stag that now for quite some time,
and alarm bells should be ringing.
Speaker 6 (16:36):
Indeed they should. I think coach Ben Sawy is up
for media tomorrow morning, so I provided people turn up
to talk to them, because there's only one thing worse
than being very very bad at sport, and that is
being irrelevant. And you know that that's I think as you,
as you've pointed out, is what this White Fern's team
is slipping towards a bit of irrelevance. Look at least
if they can, you know, if they can show you
(16:57):
a plan for the future, then I think that would
be something. But I guess we have to have to
wait and see. We've run out of time in the chamber. Unfortunately,
we're back in here tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
I just got to add at the end of that,
I don't say any of that with any formal pleasure.
Love the White Ferns.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
They've given me a heap.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Of jewey over the last thirty years, and I want
to see them rise and rise again, Right, Piney.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
I feel exactly the same, Yet none of it's with
any malice. It's just with a desire to see them
do a heck of a lot better.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
