Spot dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
You're listening to the Sports Fix Podcast. A career best
Formula one finished for Liam Lawson at this morning's Austrian
Grand Prix. He's crossed in sixth place to earn eight
points for himself and for Racing Bulls. His teammatee Isaac
Hadjar was twelve. In fact, Lillam Lawson the best of
all four cars from the Red Bulls stable max forstap
and clipped at the start, making it the first time
(02:52):
he's failed to finish this season. Yuki Sonoda coming home sixteenth.
Let's bring in motorsport expert Bob McMurray. Bob, great to
chat to you on the Sports Fix podcast. How significant
a day is this for Liam? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (03:06):
Hi, Penny, Well, let's look at the day. Let's look
at the weekend for Liam. He he's been in a
constant battle with his TEAMMATEE and his teammatee Isaac Hadja
has eclipsed him quite a lot. But this weekend, if
you look at the free practice one, okay, Haji was
ahead of him. Then free practice two free practice three,
(03:28):
qualifying one, two and three. Liam was ahead of Haji
the whole way. In fact, even in the race, he
got a faster lap than Hajar. So Liam has had
a very good weekend generally. He he sort of said
at the beginning of the weekend, the car is more
comfortable for him. They've done a lot of work and
it's paid off. It looks comfortable for him. Now. You've
(03:49):
got to admit that he was nearly knocked out on
the first corner, well turn three, on the first lap
with the accident with Stafan and Antonelli, but then onwards
he just stuck to his guns. He only did one
pit stop, so it was a remarkable race to keep
on just two sets of tires the whole way round,
whereas everybody else bar one Alonso was on two stops
(04:12):
and Alonso had to follow him virtually for seventy one laps.
And you know, to keep a world champion behind you.
A remarkable weekend for him, and I think he can
be well pleased with himself.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I want to drill down into a couple of points
you've made there. First of all, you know you often
when we have you on the show, talk about about
Liam and his comparison with Isaac Headjar in terms of
finishing ahead of him, out performing him. That's clearly quite important, Bob,
to outperform your teammate.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
It's extremely important and extremely important for Liam as well.
I think he denies it all the time, but I
think from Liam's point of view, the psychological effect of
getting employed by the top team as max staff and
teammate and then dumped after just two races, I think
(05:03):
that has lived with him for some time. And then
coming into the red the racing ball team with a rookie,
a very promising rookie who's all, you know, spit and bluster,
all sorts of things straight away, and he's out there
beating Liam. I think that kind of affected his psyche
a little bit more, and I think he's taken a
(05:23):
while to get out of it. And I think in
the last one or two races, especially, or one or
two weekends, he's kind of got a different aspect to
me looking at him. He's got a different aspect about
his personality, about the way he's doing business in the
racing car. And I think we've seen this weekend the
result of that. Now this may be race specific. It
(05:45):
may be because he's well used to the austereized ring
us as he used to be the Austrian Grand Prix track.
It may be that he's well used to that track
in that car and it suited him. He has had
his best weekend this year coincidentally with Hajar's worst weekend
of this year. So you know, Swallows and Summers. We've
(06:07):
got to give it a one or two races to
see if he's on track. But I think he is
back on track. I really do, right, because you can't
do seventy odd laps around that place, seventy one laps,
whether it was with a world champion as close to
you behind you as you can possibly be, and beat
him and be in front of fourteen other drivers, you
(06:31):
know you can't do that without some skill and belief
in your own ability, and that's what he's got. I
think this.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Weekend absolutely well. Let's go to two and three on
lap one, Keimmy Antonelli crashing into Max for Stappen, ending
both of their races. Now, Liam I think was clipped
as well, wasn't he? Can you talk us through what
you saw happen there?
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Yeah? Well, Anthonelli for those people who haven't seen it.
Turned three is an uphill, literally a sharp right hand bend.
On the first lap, people are driving into the two
three four abreast. It's very easy to get clipped, and
everybody is generally a little bit careful in there just
to get around it. Once you do the first lap,
(07:09):
on you go. Unfortunately, Antonelli was approaching just a little
bit quickly and he had to use the brakes a
little bit hard. He saw that he wasn't going to
break in time to miss the car in front of him,
so he went further to the right hand side, therefore
cutting that corner off completely. He would had no hope
of turning right in that case. He hit the brakes hard,
(07:33):
skidded up on the curb, and went straight ahead. I
think the first carry hit basically was Liam, but fairly lightly.
But then he cannoned into the Staffan and took the
Staffan's front wheel off maybe and certainly his own front wheel.
So Liam was very fortunate to get away with that,
and he was in a good position at that time.
(07:54):
His sixth position is still I think, and he dropped
to ninth after all that, so he had a bit
of a job to do. He had a bit of
work to do to get through the rest of the race,
and he did. He put his head down and he
drove brilliantly on an exceptionally hot day and managing tires
at the same time. It is a strategy that we
(08:15):
have seen Red Bull pull over the past few races,
a sort of an off strategy to other people, and
it has failed in Liam's terms more than once. Well,
this time it worked and everything worked for him. So yeah,
an excellent an excellent performance on the day. But you know,
let's see if you can manage the same sort of
(08:36):
thing as Silverston coming up this coming weekend.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Let's hope. So we'll all be watching with interest. Such
interesting times, very good weekend for Liam Lawson. Always enjoy
and appreciate your expertise. Bob, Thanks for joining us. Bob
McMurray with us on the sports Fox podcast sports Vex.
At the start of any Test week, particularly the first
Test week of the year, we can take part in
everybody's favorite pastime and play selector for the All Blacks
(09:02):
and the first Test against France and Dunedin on Saturday night.
I've picked my team. Here's what I think they should do,
not what they will do. Here's what I would do
if I was in charge. Ethan DeGroot, Cody Taylor and
Tyrell Lomax in the front row, Captain Scott Barrett and
tuport Vai in the second row. Summer Penny Fee now
would get the number six jersey for me. Ardie Savere
(09:24):
has said he wants to play open side. Was terrific
for more water pacifica there, so he's in seven and
then without Wallace Atiti there, I've gone Luke Jacobson in
the eight jumper.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
I know Christian Leo Will he's come in to.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
The side, but he was on the outside of the
thirty three to start with, so I think you have
to give Luke Jacobson the start in the eight jumper.
Cameroy guard is half back of course, Boden Barrett for me,
where's the ten jersey with Damian Mackenzie off the bench,
Jordi Barrett and Billy Proctor teaming up in midfield For me,
even though he won't like it, I would put Rico
(09:58):
Yowani on the left wing, sever Reese on the right
and Will Jordan of course, the world's best fallback. That
would leave on the bench summer, Sauny Tokiyaho, Fletchen all Pussily, Tossi,
Patrick Tuipolotu, a debut for Duplessy Kodifi as loose forward reserve,
then Cortez Ratima, Damien mackenzie and another potential All Blacks
(10:19):
debu for Tamothi, Tava Tava Nahway. Those guys tabatavana Y
Kadifi and a couple of others have been brought into
this side because of the power that they bring and
because of the impact that they can have.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Let's not forget that in.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
All four Test losses last year, the All Blacks led
at halftime. Finishing is a big work on for them,
and having guys like Kardifi and Tava Tava na Way
coming off the bench is a statement of intent when
it comes to the way that you want to finish
test matches. That's what I do on Saturday. What will
(10:52):
they do? We'll find out on Thursday. Looking forward to
the first All Blacks Test of twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
On the sports Fix podcast.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Let's get inside the Chamber and quite a few rugby
league questions I have today for well, for me really
as much as you as well. So I've invited in
the host of the Big League podcast or the co
host of and one of the better rugby league minds
going around our business, Nathan Lynn. Nathan, let's get straight
to it. Luke Metcalf if indeed he is out for
(11:28):
as long as we think he may be, and that
is going to be a significant length of time. First
of all, how big a blow is this for the
Warriors of Luke Metcalf is out for the rest of
the season.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
It's a massive blow, Piney, it's a massive blow. He's
leading the Dalian points leaderboard for a significant part of
this season. He's been in such incredible form and you
can see how much he's grown just over the start
of the season of the games he's played. Because people
forget he hadn't played half back before this year. This
is his first time being an NRL halfback and he's
(11:59):
done it so so well, and he's grown so much.
If we think back to the Las Vegas loss to
the Raiders, his kicking games come a lot ways, a
lot better at organizing the Warriors attack. There are few
questions there earlier in the season, but he's come You
know leaps and bounds and you really feel for him
because he's probably also in terms of a Warrior's perspective,
he's probably the most X factor player in the Warriors
(12:19):
back line when you think of his speed of his footwork,
metcalf is really really important to the Warrior's attack and
the potency of that attack. So it's a massive, massive
loss when you couple that with the loss of Chanceckle
Crook Start as well another knee injury. His one looked
more sickening to me, to be honest, seeing his legs
sort of get trapped under the Broncos player at the
(12:40):
end of the first half. And you take into consideration
how crucial chances for the Warrior's defense. The number of
trice saving tackles Chanceckle Crook Start has made this season.
He made two just in the Broncos game just gone.
So he's crucial for the Warriors defense, but then also
the attack when you factor in the number of run
meters he has every game. These two are massive blows
(13:04):
also because they're both in the Spine and we talk
about how important that Spiners and Rugby league, So I
mean off the back of Dallon's injury, off the back
of Mitch Barnett's injury. This is a Warrior's side underpression.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Now, okay, well, let's then move logically on to who
might replace Luke Metcalf and that seven jumper. He has
started every game this season, so nobody else has had
that opportunity to start in seven. Somebody's going to have
to step up. Who are the candidates and who.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
Do you like to?
Speaker 4 (13:32):
Mini Martin and Tanner Boyd are the two options. I
like to Mindy Martin. I want to Mindy Martin to
be the half back. The reason is because last year
soon Shawn Johnson got injured and everyone panics as they
always do when Shawan Johnson gets injured, and to Mardy
Martin steps up and he puts on a couple of
absolutely masterful performances and him and that was alongside Janelle
(13:55):
Harris Deavida as well, who's obviously still occupying the sixth jumper.
Those two is a combination, I think the Warriors best
harves combination. Last year, Shawn Johnson just with us is
struggling with Achilles' injuries and various things throughout the year,
just never really got that combination going. With Martin at six.
But those two Martin at seven, Harris Devita at six.
I think that was the Warrior's best combination last year.
(14:16):
Martin is filled in just about every position this season.
He's missed everything really in terms of his now sin
coming off the interchange, nothing bothers him. He's a steady
hand on the wheel. I would like him to start
at half back. The other option, of course is Tanner Boyd,
who's come from the Cowboys and he has not had
the chance to play this year because Chanelle and Luke
(14:37):
have been in such good form. Tanner Boyd is a
specialist number seven and the Warriors Andrew Webster might look
at at Tanner Boyd as an option because he's probably
got the best kicking game at the club. He's got
a massive boot on him and with the Warriors struggling
with yardage so far, just in the last few weeks
with Mitch Barnett being out, he might look at that.
(15:00):
You might think back to the Broncos game and think,
you know, the Warriors really struggled to get out of
their half and a kicking game like Tanner Boyd possesses
could be very very helpful there. But judging just off
those two. I would go to Mandy Martin based off
his experience, his performance last year, and I just think
he deserves it as well.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah, look, I find myself nodding along. I don't know
as much about Tanner Boyd, but I do endorse what
you've said about to Marty Martin. M was actually a
little bit surprised, as you may have been, that he
wasn't handed the seven jumper at the start of the year.
Maybe he's going to get it now. The Warriors have
a buy then, the Tigers, Knights and Titans, three sides
occupying three of the bottom five rungs of the NRL Ladder,
(15:40):
which looks, you know, on the face of it. Anyway,
A couple of those games at home too are fairly
comfortable July, but off back to back losses, it becomes
quite an important July, doesn't it.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
It does. It does definitely in terms of we're talking
about that top four I said on this podcast a
few weeks ago, Poney that the Warriors are a top
four side. They haven't played like a top four side
in the last two weeks. They just haven't. If you
look at the Broncos game. Defensively overall, I thought they
scrambled really well. They showed plenty of few troubles on
the edges, but they just were error ridden, giving away penalties.
(16:10):
Decision making was very questionable. So the bye, you know,
I look at the draw at the start of season.
I was like, oh, bye, three a bye, then three
weeks of games and then another buy. That's not going
to work. But actually it's come at a great time
now because of these injuries, and it's a good chance
for the Warriors to just reset because as you said,
it was a Tiger's Knights Titans to come. Those are
(16:31):
much kinder games the teams down the ladder, teams that
have had problems of their own. So it's a good
chance to reset for Webster that have a couple of
weeks to just survey how he's going to manage these
two injuries, because he's got a foot problem to solve
at fullback as well. I presume taine to a peak
he would go on there and then you've got Ed
Corsey and a Roger as the two wingers remaining there.
That's how I'd have it. But yeah, the Warriors will
(16:54):
need to turn this around, and I think the buy
will be a great time to sit back, watch the
Warriors women Piney is then go again.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Look forward to that. It's become an NRL chamber, which
is just what I was after. Thanks for Topping and.
