Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talks ited b.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Why hello there, listens the News Talks. It be sports Talk.
Come to Darcy Watergrove Grade tv ol Alo on board
seven minutes after seven on a Friday night, November the
twenty second, twenty twenty four coming up in this hour
and the program Oh Pepper, you with information around free

(00:59):
practice two for Formula one in Las Vegas and he
just started out a couple of minutes ago. Also keep
you up today with the massacre in Perth. All right,
it's not that bad yet, but you get the feeling
at some stage in the next hour, India will indeed
bleed out there ninety three for the loss of six.

(01:23):
So the sleeping giant that apparently the black Caps woke
up still in a coma snow sign of life. Shake
poor water on it, slap its face, wake up man. Anyway,
besides that, we're going to take a lot of your
calls on our eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty.
We'll take a text nineteen ninety two z a z
BE standard text charge does apply. Fune call free as

(01:44):
you like, jump into it. We'll be talking with Mick
Acres Ladder and the piece he might have Sport a
journalist for a newspaper over in Nevada, the Review Journal.
He is a sports journal and he will tell us
about the atmosphere, the feeling, what's happening in and around

(02:04):
Vegas ahead of this Man of weekend? And have the
Americans ever heard of Liam Lawson? Are the Mexicans turning
up on mass too? Who knows what goes on? But
he's had a terrible First up Lawson slowest around tire
problems unfortunately for Liam, but that's later. First up. Dean

(02:25):
Bud joins us. Dean Bud, former Italian rugby captain, talk
about the All Blacks team naming, which I think took
most of us by surprise. It definitely did myself. We'll
talk to him about Italy's chances, italy strengths, What on
Earth's happened to Italian rugby anyway since they turned up
and started playing Sex Nations in the full strength side,

(02:48):
crazy crazy. We'll talk about that and then we'll take
your calls a eight hundred eighty ten eighty chew over
what we've heard. This is the best team that Scott
Robertson could pick sort of injury. This is the strongest team.
He's got a bit of overkill taking on the Italians.

(03:13):
As I've said before and I'll say it again, taking
a bazooka to a knife fight. Are you satisfied with that?
With that full strength side, what do you think maybe
they should have used this time to maybe just break
in a couple of fringe all Black players. I'll give
you my thoughts on that up after we speak to

(03:33):
Dean budd who was up next before that, though this
saw today kind of sports Today, All Black Santa Rica
Juane was wheeled out to the media today to deliver
a unique and cutting insight into the team's approach to
the final game of twenty twenty four against their perennial
easy beats Italy. Instead, we got this so so.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Crucial for us, you know, it's the you know, we've
seen so much growth from this team this year, and
I think that's that's on everyone's mind as make you
sure that you know he has a touch on weekend
on our players that are leaving and.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Like their rugby players, right, they're not public speakers, they're
I don't say anything else. It's here's a script. Just
stick to it, try and get learnings and if you can,
very important for it. Come on.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Unlike their rugby team, the Italians and the other newcomers
to sale GP the Brazilians, they should perform, but at
least the New Zealand sale GP's Peter Berling believes that
to be the case.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
They've got some great people involved in those squads are
I'm sure they'll be able to you know, win races
start from back, so it's something that will be really
interesting to see how.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
They fit into the format.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
But they'll be performing in the riding the fleet for.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Sure, as long as he's looking back at them, not
looking toward them in the lead.

Speaker 6 (04:52):
Right.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
International football experience for US players and the associated windows
cut both ways. His Phoenix manager John Carlo Italiano.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
We believe in here is that all players need to
get to where they want to and the nation team
is part of that process, you know, and the more
we have in there, you know, the more exposure they
can and they get to where they need to.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
So it's again at two inch shot. His men take
on the Melbourne victory on Sunday after an international window break,
and Lydia co as a pubby. You got a bubby.

Speaker 6 (05:24):
He keeps me actually more focused while I am practicing,
and then while I'm off, you know, I'm able to
switch off and just enjoy time with him and kind
of also figure out what life is outside of just
golf course hotel.

Speaker 7 (05:37):
Up.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Next, they interview the Dog and that's Sport Today. Twelve
minutes after seventeen, Bud joins us now. A former Italian
rugby player. Indeed, he was a skipper toward the end
of his career. He joins us now to talk about
playing me All Blacks v Italy. Dean Bud, Welcome to
the show.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
Yeah bloody good.

Speaker 8 (05:59):
Thanks you yourself, Yeah, not.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
So bad, looking forward to the final test of the season.
Of course, that you played for Italy captain Italy for
a handful of tests as well. When you saw this
team announced from the All Blacks, did you think it
was a bit like taking a bazooka to a knife fight.
This is a hell of a team, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (06:19):
Well, I've got to defend my Italian boys and not
pretend that at least a semi automatic weapon as opposed
to a knife. But no, I did expect the All
Blacks to want to finish the season strong. I think
it's a message from Raizer. I say he doesn't want
to risk anything. He's certainly been in the firing line

(06:41):
of a few critics and media throughout his first year
and charge, so I think he'll want to make sure
he cleaned this one up.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Where's the Italian what's their attitude coming from? Last time
they played it was in a World Cup and they
nearly nearly got a ton scored against them, So I
expect anything less than I don't know how do you
target this All Blacks match when you take them on?
Because you played them once, couldn't play them a second
time because of the rain in Japan. But was the
thought process around how you play? What is a good result?

Speaker 7 (07:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (07:10):
I think, and speaking with a few of them this week.

Speaker 5 (07:13):
It's going to just be about re establishing a bit
of respect from the rugby community and winning the hearts
of the fans back and just delivering a strong performance.
I hate to say as a professional athlete going into
games that we don't expect to win, but I don't
think at least quiet at the stage where we're expecting
to win. Probably the right thing. I know that sounds

(07:34):
like a little bit of a loser's mentality. But I
think going out there in a strong performance and getting
some credibility back after what was pretty embarrassing to feed
at the World Cup will be their goal.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
So is it the case of not trying to slow
the damage down, but more's the point of maybe achieving
the achievables as far as tackles, as far as mess tackles,
or not having them, as far as some form of
parity in the scrums and the ruckses. It look too

(08:05):
like that as opposed to an overall victory.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
Yeah, I think they'll want to be strong in defense.
I think that's let them down a little bit, especially
with the rgs in the last kind of fifteen minutes
of their test, I think. And even even so, the
Georgia game led in a few what they would deem
the soft tries through in a game where they dominated
a lot of possession. I think they'll they'll want to

(08:28):
be stronger, they want to be more clinical there, and
that will then give them the opportunity to hopefully nob
a couple of tries here and there.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Dean Bada joins us so from my Italian skipper looking
ahead to the last match of the All Blacks Northern
Tour tilt us around Italian rugby full stop, because you're
around there for quite some time. It doesn't seem to
have gained the traction that most would like after being
admitted to the Six Nations all those years ago. What's

(08:59):
holding them back? Dem Yeah, I'm always.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
Very proud of my time there, so I hate to
be hypercritical of what went wrong, But there's just a
little bit of an inconsistency from every level. I think
the Federation seems to change leadership every three years.

Speaker 9 (09:16):
It's not driven by a.

Speaker 5 (09:17):
Businessman as such. Generally speaking, it's a voting system over
there where a new god can come in and a
change directive like the Winds. So I think they've just
lacked that consistency. I think they've lacked really entering into
the professional era of funding support and kind of call

(09:38):
it fifteen staff teams where you have a coach for
every aspect and you have mental skills coaches and all
the things. I just don't think they've really bought and
completely just yet.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Is there engagement across the nation. I'm sure it's reduced
to pockets of the population. Considering the Mad passionate fans
of football. I get you, but is there a want
to people enjoy this game? Has it got any traction?

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yes, absolutely it has the North the North is pretty
pretty much rugby driven. I mean football, you can't can't
hide from it, and volleyball and basketball, they're all pretty
dominant sports over there. But a lot of the fans
I think we started to win hearts. We would go
to games and spect the fans afterwards, and I said,
you know, this is my first rugby game. I used
to be a football fan, but I just can't watch

(10:27):
that anymore. That they're pretenders. We want a real we
want a real sport. And so I think that there's
a change in the air over there around supporting rugby
and and kind of the authenticity that it brings as
a as a movement, as a person that it creates,
and as a game.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Who's the strength of Italian rugby?

Speaker 5 (10:47):
I think there's They're still pretty strong upfront. I think
I've always believed obviously I planned to my own role,
there have been a ford. I always thought we were better,
but I think their backs have come a long way.
I think for a while, until you really struggled to
deliver a good attacking back line. I think now they're
they're starting to run with some depth, with some purpose,

(11:09):
with some control. I think the back line starting to
become a lot stronger to Potts at the back and
absolute X factor player. You've got Montu Rone on the wing. Incredible,
There's there's just there's a little bit more to the
back line now, which is which brings a little bit
more flair hopefully when the forwards can get some go forward.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Dean Budd joining us. When you look at coming out
through the ranks, and of course you played for Benetton,
was it for a number of years? What's the strength
of that next level? Like are the cattle there to
promote up and maybe in time put a half decent
result in Internationally? Have have you got that next level
down do you think, Dean?

Speaker 5 (11:48):
I mean at club level Benetton's incredibly successful. They play
in the USC competition with the likes of Leinster and
Munster and the South Africans and have well. I guess
it was the same year that the Blues won what
was a reduced in the back of COVID. They won
won one of the competitions there and we're typically a
top half of the draw, so it does need another

(12:12):
team that is successful over there to bring a bit
more depth. There is a bit of a foreign base
in the Benetton side as well, which aren't eligible for
the country, so that does detract a little bit from developing.
But the Benetton for example, has now got a squad
of sixty. They understand what professional rugby is. The facilities

(12:32):
are getting better, so I think in time that will
certainly help the national side.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Is it a problem, Dean having so many foreigners involved
they need to maybe put a cap on that to
introduce and develop their.

Speaker 5 (12:43):
Own Yeah, it's an interesting one because I think and
again as a part of it, so I don't want
to cut off foreign about I think we can bring
really good, helpful change and help open the eyes a
little bit. We've seen at at the club level when
Karen Crowley came in. Without him coming into Italian rugby,

(13:06):
then things will be going pretty slowly. Still, he made
incredible change at Benetton, and not only in the style
of play, but he helped change the directors of sport,
He helped change the presidents of the club. He helped
open their eyes. As players, we struggle to do that
a little bit because they kind of tell us to
sit down and stand our place. But at that level,
it's certainly an impactful thing. Having a foreign coach.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
You mentioned Dane a couple of players before that could
be key. Do you want to give us a couple
more about where we should actually look. Who are the
guys that might have some control over this game or
make a difference.

Speaker 5 (13:41):
I think to another key player and affords ably, Sebastian Negri,
He's just he's a bit of a big game player
in my eyes, so hopefully he'll step up. He carries
hard and carries lots. You'll see a few show and
goes from home. I think Ignasha bricks. He will be
his first game at captain at center. He's an incredible

(14:03):
weapon for the back line on defense. If he gets
game right defensively, I think he'll make up for what
can be a few holes in the back line in
a few ears. And hopefully garbe Easy at ten has
a has a good strong performance him and him and
Manchello at ten twelve. Of course, Menchello's kind of picked
to be one of the players of Europe going forward.

(14:25):
He's young, and he's strong and he's really good, so
that there is there is some genuine talent there.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Dean Bard. Before we go, and thanks very much for
your time. He's still dining out on the draw that
the Italians had with the All Blacks and the World
Cup in Japan draw with an asterisk of course.

Speaker 7 (14:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:43):
I wake up daily actually, and I certainly enjoy these
weeks where I get to chat about Italy and kind
of remember what was a special draw that week at
the World Cup that has often forgotten, but never by me.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
We won't forget. It stands out like the dog's proverbials,
even though we know it was something to do with
the weather. But that's okay, Hey, Dean, real pleasure mate.
Thanks very much for your time of great weekend. I
appreciate that.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
The right call is your call on oh eight hundred
and eighty eighty sports Talk call on your home of
sports news Talk.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Zibby had Dean Bud, former Blue North Under Auckland player,
tore away to Italy and he ended up playing for
the Italian national side, indeed captain for a handful of tests.
To boot with that legendary New All draw with the
All Blacks becus the game was called off due to
the underwhelming weather over in Japan at the World Cup.

(15:40):
So be it, but he'll always hold that, dear and true.
Great to have Dean Bud on the program. We thank
him for his time. Your turn now all quick update
and the Cricket India one hundred and seven for six
Coomar ready is on twenty two. Rishard Punt is on
twenty nine and Lawson's gone slightly quicker than he did

(16:02):
earlier on in the piece. Worry about that right at
the very end because it's only practiced too. Let's face it,
only geeks like me you want to watch that. So
Deans on the show we talk about the Italian side.
He talked about the New Zealand side. I want to
know your opinion. Should Scott Robinson, raisor Robinson given more
fringe players a run against Italy? This is the last chance,

(16:24):
right next year the friends are coming. That's how things
start off. Although in saying that, apparently they're going to
send a B team over, so maybe it doesn't matter.
Maybe you get a chance to run some of your
dirt trackers up against them. But if there was ever
an opportunity to use some of these guys who haven't

(16:44):
been exposed to the rigors of international rugby. Possibly this
was it, or you might be happy with the full
strength side. I was reasonably convinced that I was wrong. Again,
there you go, it happens. It's rugby after all. That
Razor indeed would do that. He would bring some of
the lesser lights in, give them a test cap, let

(17:05):
them run around the place, the feel of the ball
in their hands, playing an international side. That's good. However,
the counter to that is this, what would they actually
learn it of playing Italy? Nothing? What did they learn
by being exposed to the might of the Italians who

(17:25):
have been terrible since day one and continue to be terrible.
It doesn't matter how many times they run in the
Six Nations. I don't know if any of the players
would get any benefit from that at all. So you
go to the full strength side, and you go to
the statement of intent and go okay. So Scott Robertson

(17:49):
wants to walk away from his first year in charge
with maybe a B plus. Didn't quite get it done
against the French, didn't quite get it done against the
South Africans. Definitely to get it done. Since the Argentinians
but he did okay against England, did well against Ireland.
So to end the season the last thing you remember

(18:10):
with an exclamation mark by trashing the Italians, maybe that's
what he wants to go on, if he wants to
leave on an absolute positive, on an uplifting note, going
that is what we are capable of, regardless of the opposition.
We're going to do our absolute best and we're going
to put everything we've learned so far this year with

(18:33):
all of these top players on the line, and we're
going to show you what an all black team can be,
a destructive all black team can be, and we are
going to run through them, as General George S. Patten
said once, We're going to run through them like pup
through a goose. That could well happen, of course, if

(18:56):
they play like pants and don't get any trig bluff
on their face. So just tell me. I thought that
it should have been French team. I really thought that'd
be the way to go. And part of the reason
you should be celebrating the fact that it is a
full strength side is that the way the tour has
been arranged sucks. It's a stink tour that they end

(19:19):
on such a downer as Italy. It's a it's a
really bad way to go out of an international tour.
It's a real letdown. It's a wet fart. So let
this way we can walk away. Go well, you gave
us robbist during the series, but we're going to blow
them off the park by that, oh, eight hundred eighty
ten eighty more fringe players or a massacre in Italy.

(19:45):
Your thoughts eight hundred eighty ten eighty didn't think it happened,
but I kind of like what they're doing with this now,
Bazooka to a knife fight. This is news talks here
B seventy.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
No need for the DMO. We've got the breakdown on
Sports Talk call.

Speaker 7 (20:14):
News Talk.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Half pasted to seven sports look on that News Talks
the beads Friday Night and Nomber twenty two pants just
hooked a sex and he's fallen over at the same time,
it still cleared the boundary. It's not a bad shot
from sharp. It's got to our first call and talking
about Scott Robertson's super strong team to take on the Italians.
Have been over there or do you reckon? Maybe just

(20:46):
maybe should have given some of the French players a
better of a role. Gooda Jeff, how are you okay?
How are you?

Speaker 3 (20:53):
No?

Speaker 6 (20:53):
I'm good?

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Good? What do you make of this?

Speaker 8 (20:57):
I think, Look, you cannot just pay your top team
against top teams because they have to also learned to
learn to play with each other and intermingle and how
to move, and they can do that better against lesser teams.

(21:19):
So I'm quite happy with what he's doing.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Yeah, so it's like a reward almost, Well.

Speaker 8 (21:27):
No, I know, it's it's getting to know each other
when there's less pressure. If you know, you don't you
know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (21:38):
You know, like.

Speaker 8 (21:40):
It's slightly easier to slip a pass or or something
like that, you know, and they just need to get
to play, get to know where each other is going
to be in a given circumstance.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Is that a good way to leave the end of
the season. Leave it on a high, leave it on
an up and look, Jeff, I also put this to you.
I may be horribly wrong. They're telling you might pulling
out of the bag and really roll into us. Highly unlikely,
but a good way to leave.

Speaker 8 (22:10):
Well, we'll find there next year.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
What is it the general consensus that the frends are
going to send a rubbish team over anyway, so it
doesn't really matter.

Speaker 8 (22:21):
Well it doesn't. That doesn't matter. I mean, as long
as we beat the crap out of them, that's what matters.
This game has got nothing to do with that.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
Well, and that's another there, isn't it, Jeff. It's about
the here and now. It's not about looking too far forward.
This is the season. We wrap it up and we
play our best team and then we walk away. We
worry about next year, next.

Speaker 8 (22:45):
Year, next Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 7 (22:47):
Next.

Speaker 8 (22:47):
Next year's next year, Like you can't do nothing about
that at this stage. But yeah, it's an interesting dilemma,
isn't it.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
But it's two very different schools of thought, isn't it, Jeff?
And I think we can both understand both concepts. It's
what one you're happier with.

Speaker 8 (23:09):
I'll tell you what's in. The Great's going to have
a bloody good game, isn't he?

Speaker 2 (23:16):
The thing is what I find amusing about that on amusing. Right,
he's had a terrible time. But whatever he did, I've
got no idea. But he's only in and they said
he trained the house down because Tomighty Williams has got
a sore neck. So if tomighty Williams hadn't have been
all beat up, I don't even think he would have
got to run then, right, well, I don't think.

Speaker 8 (23:36):
I don't think you would have either, because tomighty Williams
is just he's just been colossal.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Maybe they would have given a cup of tea to
lie down because they've given tiple arrest, haven't they say?
Maybe that's hey, Jeff, thanks very much for you. Always
appreciate our seventy three sports talk here on news Talk Z.
B Ready and Parts have got a partnership now fifty
one only sixty eight deliveries having an absolute time of

(24:06):
out there. And this is so resharb punt is it not?
Wants to take a long handle, refuses to stand back,
cracks into it off of the text line nineteen nine
two zbzb. This is in reference to the fairly stock

(24:28):
standard quotes from Rico Yowani that we played in the
News that I had a wee bit of a giggle
over Darcy. I keep telling you rugby players should be seen.

Speaker 1 (24:37):
And not heard.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
All you get is a pr word salad. Thanks Steve.
It's true, but I feel almost a little bad when
you put an All Black in a situation where you're
expecting something interesting out of them, you very really get it.
Because they're terrified about being misquoted, terrified about saying the

(25:01):
wrong thing and upsetting management, terrified about upsetting sponsors, terrified
about any blowback if they say something even slightly interesting,
and I think the media trained into the ground to
not actually say anything at all. And the less they say,
and the longer they take to say little, the more

(25:23):
celebrated they are within the camp, which makes for fairly
dull media exchanges. As long as they win. I don't
suppose we care. You saw what happened to a Rico
when he had a crack at Sexton last year. Just
didn't stop, did it. It was on the field, So
I understand why they don't want to say anything on
the radio that thanks for your text anyway, mates, says

(25:46):
another text, and you've always run through oh one hundred
eighty ten eighty pretty keen to hear from you, whether
you're celebrating this massive all Black team or commiserating the
fact that the secondary side didn't get to have a crack.
After spending all of that time touring Europe, they still
were Again get to have a bit of fun. But cruel,
isn't it. I made anyone who bought anyone who brought

(26:11):
a bazooka to a knife fight would probably still get
gutted after his first shot missed. Robertson is doing fine.
Send Sam and TJL for the big win and pull
the chain on. Twenty twenty four to twenty twenty five
will be the first year we really see his plan.
This year it has been about making the best of

(26:33):
what Fozzy left him. GT Yip, thanks very much for that.
I think ending on a band is not an entirely
bad thing. You've got to feel good situation. Remember Steve
Hanson talking about a having a rock on the beach
now at the end of the season, but it didn't
quite work. Wouldn't it have been a more exciting, bigger

(26:53):
anticipation if start off against Italy, then move up through
and then the last game of the European Tour is
a France or an Ireland. Wouldn't that have been better?
Don't know why they accepted schedule with a wet fart
on the end of it makes no sense to me.
It's not really all blacks, is it. He's doing what

(27:14):
he can with whatever he's got on to Scott seven
thirty six Sports Talk Cary, News Talk z B. We
go to Vegas next. We're gonna catch up with Mick Acres.
He works for Las Vegas Review Journal. There's paper over
in Nevada and be talking about Formula one on its
return to Las Vegas. This is news Talk Be. It's

(27:39):
seven thirty.

Speaker 10 (27:40):
Seven Closer and fear his lips are feeling.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
From Vegas. Shortly in the one hundred and twenty one
for six after electing to bats in the first of
five tests in Australia. Terrible start and they're pulling her
back out of the fire again before we go to
Vegas with mac Acres out of the Las Vegas Review

(28:25):
Journal or wherever you are with Peter good A May
what have you got for us?

Speaker 7 (28:29):
Oh? Darcy on a lion supported down here and I'm
a book disappointed that Reuven Love went over on the
tour there, and I thought they would make a chance
for him to develop and have one of the games.

Speaker 9 (28:45):
Of the tour.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
I wonder how he feels about that, because basically he's
been carrying bags and clearing dishes, isn't he?

Speaker 7 (28:53):
Oh yeah, I think it's disappointing in the act to
do perceive Carife. I thought they might have given him
a game.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Your ideal will this opportunity is shedding used to help
players understand the vagaries of international rugby.

Speaker 7 (29:11):
Yep, that's what That's what I believe the tour tour
was to be you developed some of these young players
that go on tour for developing their experience for the future.
And well, that's the way the boss has made his
decision and I have to leave with it that I suppose.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
Yeah, he's the coach, it's his team. He can do
what he wants. A couple of texts and Schmidt and
the Wallabies have embarrassed. The one dimensional razor is slowing
our ball down, replacing a game driver d mat with
a game manager in Boden. It's not happy. It is
his team though, and let's see what happens in the

(29:53):
year two of his regime. Should have called it regime.
Makes him sound like a crazy despot. The group must
have done something pretty bad, right to another, Mackenzie didn't
even get punished for what he did in San Diego.
Who knows they didn't tell us. We will never know.
It is seven forty two. I can't give an update
in free practice two in Las Vegas because there's a

(30:18):
red flag. Someone's driven into the scenery, so everybody's gone
back to the pits. That's a shame. It looks like
it was a Williams not one hundred percent on that.
But yeah, nothing going on in the Formula one at
the moment, aside what's going on on the track though,
Let's go to the outside what else is going on?
And joined by motorsport journalists for the Las Vegas Review Journal.

(30:42):
His name is a Mick Acres. He joins us. Now, Mick,
welcome to the show.

Speaker 9 (30:48):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
How is it right now in Vegas with the Formula one?
Has it got the traction that everybody thought it would
get now that it's actually settled there?

Speaker 9 (30:57):
Yeah, you know you picked up obviously, they started promoting
the race a little bit later in the year than
they did last year, so they said that was my plans.
Once they did that, ticket sales picked up. The majority
of the spaces have sold out. There's a few high
end spaces and a couple of GA ones that are
still open. So you know, you're seeing the ticket sales
pick up. Walking pitt Row right now, and you know,
everyone's just kind of taking in all the teams taking

(31:20):
you know, practicing their hit stops and all that. A
lot of excitement. So, you know, it's just the first
night and it's already kicking off right now.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Considering where you are the majority of the fan base,
they're going to tune up. Who are they rocking for,
who do they want to win? What shits are they wearing?

Speaker 9 (31:34):
Mac you know, I'm seeing a mix of everything. And
now we've seen some Ferrari, We've seen some Mercedes, you know,
a little bit of everything. I would say a lot
of people are you know, crowding around are stoppings garage
right now? Obviously well, one of the favorites out here
in the US. Obviously he's the most successive recent siety.
I guess a lot of people who might be new
to the sport in the US are taken to that.

(31:56):
But you know, some of the people who came out
here from around the world, you know, they have their
alliances and such. So I'm seeing a pretty good mix
of pretty much every team right now.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
Critical mess. How is it going. As far as the
acceptance of Formula one, It's been around for a long time,
but limiting media are really going forward. They have three
races and the stites now they really want to pick
up involvement. Is that working. Are you seeing a lift
and interest from everybody concerned?

Speaker 9 (32:24):
Yeah, especially out here in Vegas. Up last year leading
up to the race, there was you know, several months
of repaving what would be the street circuit a lot
of in Los Acas Boulevard. Caused a lot of traffic headache,
so people were kind of ticked off about that all year.
This year is a lot more smoother because they didn't
have to do any of that repaving. They had to
start doing the tracks set up with you know, putting
some lighting, some track barriers and such, so it was

(32:45):
a lot less disruptive, and they also slashed some of
the ticket prices out here, so a lot of people
are now looking at it as more of something they
might be able to attend and something that's going to
be out of their pocket range. So I'd say, you know,
with the less disruption, people maybe look past that this
year and they're actually looking at the race and it's
actually peaking their interest.

Speaker 2 (33:03):
Right now, you mentioned next for stopping. There's a guy
here in New Zealand who's going to be running, and
he's had a few Grand Prix already for the Rebull
Racing team. His name is Liam Lawson. Does that ring
a bell for anybody?

Speaker 9 (33:17):
The people know who he is over there, you know, say,
not necessarily anyone out here in Vegas. Like I said,
they know the big names. I'm sure there's a few
diehards and might know, but I say for the most
part of the US FANI, the probably isn't as educated
as you know, the international audience at this point. But
as you know, as you mentioned, every one's trying to,
you know, get the interest that her growing, and I

(33:38):
think we're in the baby steps.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
Of that right now. He's part of Racing Ball, not
Red Bull Racing, excuse me, the Racing Bulls team, and
he's trying to get rid of Sergio Perez Checko. He
wants to take that seat. And I expect there's quite
a large Mexican population that will be turning up for
this race with its vicinity to Mexico and the population
based there in California. So I think some of those

(34:01):
fans that know who he is and wouldn't be wishing
him the best.

Speaker 9 (34:05):
Mech that would be. Yes, there is a lot of
Techo fans out here. I saw it last year. We
saw it at the fan fest when they announced the
race a couple of years ago. You know, he had
the biggest turnout, would say, of people at that So
there is a large fan base out here, so you
are correct. They probably wouldn't be a big fan of him,
absolutely trying to nudge him out of the spot.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
We joined U Boy Mick Aikids in Las Vegas as
we take a look at the upcoming grom Prix. What
are the conditions, Like you mentioned that I have to
relay the track. What else do we need to know?
I'm talking hate the weather. What teams have been saying
about what they've experienced seeking time round?

Speaker 9 (34:41):
Yeah, so today and tomorrow, so it's be pretty nice.
It'll be around you know, in the low fifties I
forty degree temperatures. No, when Saturday might be a little
bit more chiley, when could be an eighteen miles per
hour with gus up at thirty five miles per hour,
so you know, might be similar to last year's weather

(35:02):
where it's pretty chiley and whinny at the same time.
So you know it wasn't the greatest thing to be
outside of past midnight with those temperatures, But as far
as right now, it's actually pretty nice. A lot of
people aren't even wearing coats at this moment at this point,
so hoping for the best, but you know, preparing for
the worst.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
Nig Indy KAT is the big open wheel racing category
racing class in America. We know because we've got a
champion in Scott Dixon that's been dominating for years. Do
you think there's a chance that if one will gain
equal footing with Indy can where they stand with the
motorsport fans.

Speaker 9 (35:35):
You know, I think there is a gen So obviously
with all these marquee events and you have Vegas thrown
in the mix, in Miami, you have Austin, so you know,
it's kind of you got one on one coast, you
got one in the middle, and you got one on
the other side of the US. So I think they're
they've been pretty smart in that way of kind of
spreading the events out and trying to get people maybe
would go through only the East coast go to that one,
people might just go the one in the Midwest. We

(35:57):
got Texas and then one here on the West Coast
that come here to Vegas and from around the world.
So I think, you know, if they keep working at it,
and you know, they keep having these big events all
eyes on them, go on ESPN and do all that thing,
you know, I think it'll take some time, but I think,
you know, here's a real chance that it can and
surpass a IndyCar racing.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
Nick it will navigate close to NASCAR, though, will it?

Speaker 9 (36:19):
No, I wouldn't see that. That's you know, that's the
American racing they'd like to call it out here, So
it might be a bit of a stress to catch up.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
With that one. As Bruce Buffer going to kind of
stumble as why, okally through the driver introduction to Gain
and all that, what if you call it as far
as celebrity buying, because people love a good celebrity, I'm
sure a lot of the American rock stars, film stars
and the like will want to be around. So tell
us about Bruce is he coming back and who are
the other rock stars?

Speaker 9 (36:47):
You know, they've been pretty quiet about who's going to
be the celebrities and who is going to do the introductions,
But you know, Bruce Buffer is one of the main
guys that does it all over He does it all
the Raiders games here at Elita Stadium, all kinds of
special events and obviously UFC. So you know, I would
bet he would be here returning on that. And you know,

(37:07):
just based on last of what I saw. You know,
I saw rock stars from Guns and Roads, Ax Rose,
I saw Shaquille Neil, the NBA star. You know, all
kinds of a list movie actors and all kinds of
people were out here at this race. So soon it's
going to be a return of you know, of the
stars here at the track.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
Donald Trump turned up in the garage of McLaren. I
wonder if he will repeat that one as well. Aim Mick, Hey,
you never know.

Speaker 9 (37:30):
I haven't heard anything, but it wouldn't surprise me with
the way he gets around and on that.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
We'll get on with very busy time for all concerned me.
Thank you very much. Mike Acres from the Las Vegas
Review Journal out of Vegas and Nevada. Enjoy yourself, mate,
Thanks for yours, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
Forget the riffs call you make a call on Sports
Talk on your home of sport. These talks it.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
Be Talks it B and there you go straight out
of Vegas. Corresponding over there sounds like it's all the
fun of a circus. Just watching free practice to now,
it's probably quite exciting for the people who don't particularly
like Formula one or know it that well. You should

(38:16):
play the deg Kennedy's version of this night. It's much
better than Elvis's version anyway. But let's face it, it's
not a race track. It's a it's a street circuit,
which are terribly grim and dull anyway, and is at night,
so you don't really see anything except shiny lights. It's
it's kind of as flashy and shallow as the whole nation. Awesome.

(38:36):
At least they've got a great big globe, which is
kind of cool to look at. That dome is amazing.
Can't tell you what's happening in free practice because they
don't give me the information, because I'd rather interview as
CEO India. Though one hundred and twenty eight for seven
Richar pant Is gone carries on crashing down hill. Oh look,
I've got some figures. Laws in fifteenth fastest so far,

(38:58):
Sonoda tenth fastest. That's the thing we're interested in. This
is news talk'd of Fortunate, Oh, You Need to Storm Hard,
and a Stealer Beaver.

Speaker 8 (39:13):
Beaver.
