one undefeated, thirty one not out, thirty one straight Super
(00:47):
Rugby Finals matches in christ Church without losing. That is
the record the Crusaders have fashioned since Super Rugby began
in nineteen ninety six. In twenty nine years, no team
has ever gone to christ Church for a knockout match
and won that match. So two questions tonight One does
(01:08):
that ever become a burden? And can the Chiefs Question
two be the first to do it. Former Crusaders halfback
Britn Hall is standing by to answer the first one
about pressure and whether it's a burden or not. I
would like your views on the second. Let's get some
early in Grand Final week thoughts and predictions from you
(01:29):
this evening. Also Tonight, New Zealand's most successful male snow
sports athlete, two time Winter Olympic Games medalist and one
of the most decorated half pipe athletes in history. Nico
Portius stepping back from Olympic competition. He's going to join
us on the show tonight to explain why. And Monday
night is when we do Piney's Power rankings, rating the best,
(01:50):
the worst and the bits in between from the Sporting Weekend.

past seven. No need for the DMO.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
We've got the breakdown on Sports Talk cool Oh eight
hundred eighty News Talks B.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
The Crusaders will host the Super Rugby Final on Saturday nights.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
The Crusades enios. What a heart stopper and nail fighter.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
No here lifts, but it's the Crusaders who fight away.
Where don't they fight away?
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Here?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
At christ Church at Playoff Rugby, the host.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
The final next week. They've pete at the Blues tweety
what points to forty?
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Indeed they did and they will welcome the Chiefs who
will have to break a significant piece of rugby history
if they have to lift the trophy. As mentioned, the
Crusaders have never lost a finals match at home thirty
one straight since the competition began in nineteen ninety six.
Bryn Hall played a big part of that run, playing
nearly one hundred matches in the Crusaders Super Rugby winning
(03:20):
sides from twenty seventeen through to twenty twenty two inclusive,
and he joins us now Brynn undefeated and finals matches
at home as a Crusaders player. Were you aware at
the time of that record as you were helping to
build it.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
Look, I think we probably got told from the media
right that it was kind of happening in kind of
playing out as it was, so I guess you kind
of heard it from the outside noise, But I guess
internally it wasn't really something that was driven to talk
to that you kind of knew about it, and you
almost said a tench of pride that there there's been
a lot of work done before us, and so yeah,
you knew about it, But I wouldn't say it was
(03:58):
a detriment to what to do whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
So it never became a burden, never became something that
caused pressure shivers. We don't want to be the first
in red and black to lose a finals game at home.
Speaker 6 (04:10):
No, I think that it never really got talked about,
like in that thinking around there, having anxiety around it.
I think it's almost acknowledging that that it was there
and was great in terms of that we enjoyed playing
at home and love playing in christ troops. So the
preparation side of it kind of more so top care
of you. You get your week done and then you
do everything that's required for you through that week to
be able to then go and for more on the field,
(04:30):
So that it wasn't really talked about, I guess in
a bad way.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Like I just said, it's an incredible record, though, Bran,
why has it been so difficult, in fact impossible for
teams to go to christ Church and win knock out
rugby matches.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
That's the great question.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (04:46):
I think you probably have fout the other teams that
come down and play. But I can only speak from
my experience. You know, I was only a part of
a six year period, but all the guys that were
there before us that kind of started, and then obviously
the boys that are playing there now. But but I
think the conditions do play a big part of it
down in christ Church. I think you probably saw on
the weekend. It's a lot different probably what you see
in the early part of the year to get this
(05:06):
a nice running rugby in your first part of it,
but when you kind of get into the May June
it gets quite cold, you change the style of footing.
You probably saw that on the weekend as a very
not more than HEMI said, but a lot of checking
dictated in terms of how the game was won and
set piece as well. So you look at the set
piece pressure that the Crusader's put on the Blues on
the weekend. It's probably I guess the DNA what you
see in the time of the year when it comes
(05:27):
to rugby, and I think the defensive pressure and the
kid that that have shown on the weekend has probably
just been showing, I guess for a long period of time,
and the crusader's using how much it means to defend
your line and winning championships on what that looks like.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Did you ever seen centain opposition teams are feeling that
once they fell behind to you in christ or anywhere,
really they wouldn't be able to come back. A slumping
of the shoulders, a change in body language that you
kind of thought, hey, these guys aren't going to come
back and win this.
Speaker 6 (05:55):
Not necessarily, I think there were definitely times where games
would be tight, and I think it just comes down to,
I guess, you know, not overplaying your hand. I think
in finals footing and pressure footing, you're only really need
to concentrating your job and been able to do that
time and time to get under pressure. Now, look, you're
not always going to get that right. You're going to
be able to lose some moments and you're not always
going to get things right. But I guess it is
a bit of a cliche, but process driven and next
(06:16):
past focus, it's just kind of driven and both habits
are built through the week. Those habits are built through
the years of I've been able to play with each other,
having the those kind of scenarios and fields of winning
what those big games I've playing. A lot of that
group has been through that tenure of you know, winning
the seven championships, So that pedigree in DNA is infectious
for the young guys or the new guys that come
through and knowing I guess what it looks like in
(06:37):
what it takes to one finance footy at that time
of the year.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
If you were in the Chiefs camp this week, would
you expect there to be some chat about how they
can be the record breakers, they can be the ones
to do something that nobody has done before or do
you think that wouldn't be part of their motivational fuel?
Speaker 6 (06:55):
Oh, I'm not through sure. Look, I think it gets
talked about in the media. So you know, especially with
the day and age or social media, it's already been
talked about in the media. You probably see memes through
it through throughout the week. But you know, I guess
for them, I think, you know, the Chiefs that are
ready in terms have been able to if there is
one team I think in the competition that can do it,
it'll be them. I think in the last you know,
eight years or nine years, you know, they've been the
most successful team against the Crusaders team and forever the
(07:17):
times that I play them, there are always some big
battles and they're just very very hard to beat. There
a lot of similarities in terms of pressure footy. They
work really hard off the ball. They've been very really
very good in the collisionary for most of the year,
but that that that Blues game a fortnight ago, But
the way that they did play against the Brumbies, I
think you know they're they're type of foody that they
(07:38):
do play, whether that's through their forward pack we've seen
Daham mckindi, Shawn Stevenson, even Quinta Pyres for them and
their backs. They've got kind of all all the things
that you need, I guess to want to to win
a championship in and not not in just one areas
and multiple years. I think that they can do to
be able to pressure the Crusaders on the weekend all.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Right, and just to finish regardless of the result. This
will be the final game at at Addington supposed to
be a makeshift temporary stadium when it was stood up.
It's been there for well over a decade. Now do
you think any part of the Crusader's organization will be
sorry to say goodbye to dear old Eddington.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
I don't think it'd be sorry. I think tok, how
that stadium in Christri, that's Menfield, is just going to
be It's just gonna be so great for the city,
I think, not just for rugby, but the multi purpose
of being able to have events and bringing people and
bringing things down across who has probably been missed a lot.
And so you know, the Crusaders are a big part
of that. And I know Eddington is purpose. You know,
there's won a lot of titles human and saying that
in some ways, and it's hard to win down there
(08:33):
with how hard it is to play at Addington. But
I think having the closed roof and I guess the
buzz that you're going to get from that stadium, I think, Look,
I think the players in and the city are really good.
I guess say goodbye to Addington and it's said this
purpose for a foremost a decade, and I think it's
going to be a new beginning and something that's really
exciting for the group and the Crusader's moving forward, moving
to that and to that new indoor stadium.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
One more game to come, one we're all very much
looking forward to. Thank you so much for joining us tonight,
brun really appreciate your time. No promise, no thank you,
no thank you, Brtin brun Hold there, multiple championship winning
half back with the Crusaders and part of a lot
of those games, those those unbeaten finals matches in christ Church.
All right, I just want to read your pulse on this.
And it's only Monday, I know that, but you know
(09:17):
we've got the whole week and we haven't seen the
teams or anything like that yet. But let's just can
I just read your pulse this early in the week
as to whether you think the Chiefs can do it,
can do this? Can they be the team who finally
breaks this long standing record. Oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty Saturday night in Hamilton. I thought they were
(09:39):
They were good. They produced a good bounce back performance
after losing to the Blues and disappointing circumstances for them
the previous week. They lost the opportunity the previous week
to host the Grand Final. To be fair, I actually
watching that game, I never thought the Brumbies would win it,
even when they got close or they went ahead, didn't
(09:59):
they early they got close to nineteen seventeen early in
the second half. I never felt as though the Brumbies
were to win that game. The Chiefs put the foot
on the gas, pulled away Damien McKenzie with some pinpoint
accuracy off the kicking tea and that trice saving tackle
of this, My goodness, every time I watch it, I
wonder how on earth he has managed it to get
(10:21):
his arm under the ball like that, to have the
awareness to even get his body in the right place.
I feel like if you the Brumbies and something like
that happens, you know it's not going to be your night.
And so it approved. So I think we can all agree,
can we can we all agree that the two best
teams this season are in the final? I think right
early on, if you know you'd surveyed one hundred rugby
(10:43):
fans and ask them who they thought would be in
the Grand Final, I reckon you'd be three quarters at
least would have had the Crusaders and the Chiefs there.
So now we ask the question, can the Chiefs do
what no other team has managed in the history of
this competition and go down there a Winter finals match,
(11:03):
not City finals match, the Grand Final. I feel like
if anybody can do it, the Chiefs can do it.
They've already won down there this season. In fact, they've
beaten the Crusaders twice this season. In round two they
put the highest score on the Crusaders that anybody has
managed all season when they won forty nine to twenty
(11:25):
four in Hamilton. They won down in christ Church in
round one of the twenty twenty three season. They were
very very good that year. Or remember and we must
remember what happened at the end of that season when
after losing just one of their sixteen games, they lost
the Grand Final to the Crusaders in Hamilton. That was
(11:51):
Raisers farewell, wasn't he the last time he break danced
at the end of a game? And then another part
of me thinks, does history actually matter? Or is it
just completely irrelevant? Do the thirty one previous games really
mean very little? Is the only thing that really matters?
(12:15):
Who is better five nights from now? Look, it's a
coin flip as far as most of us are concerned.
The tab agree. They open head to head betting at
a dollar ninety each yesterday and that hasn't moved. So
Crusaders fans, are you nervous? Chiefs fans, are you confident?
(12:35):
Everybody else? What is your gut telling you? We can
look at the matchups, the loose forward battle Blackadder, Christi,
Leo Willie against female Jacobs and Setti. Some superb outside
backs on both sides if they get the ball, Reese
v Haky, Jordan Carter, Nadowah Stevenson if he passes as Hia.
(13:00):
But I keep on looking at one name on these
team lists. If I line up the likely fifteens and
twenty three and I look at those forty six names,
I keep coming back to one name, Damien McKenzie, because
that is a position where the Chiefs definitely have the edge,
much as Rivers. Rahun's coming and done well. He is
(13:21):
not Damien McKenzie. If the Chiefs can set him a platform,
he could be the most influential player on the park.
And with all Black squad to be named a couple
of days after that, what'll be a way to stake
your claim for the number ten? Black Jersey than to
guide your team to a Super Rugby title. A eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty nine two nine two. On text,
(13:42):
it's twenty past seven, Parksy.
Speaker 8 (13:43):
Hello, I'll get a matte. Longtime listener, finish caller. Hey,
I'm feeling a bit bare for ringing now because he's
so so exciting to start with. But I just want
to know your view. I'm watching the Super Rugby. I
just love it. This year they wait for the game
to start the second half and then they interview the
two coaches and put the little box down the corner
(14:06):
and you're trying to watch the game, and that you
can tell the coaches don't even want to talk about it.
And they did the same thing, gave it to halves.
You know, thanks gladies for their ads.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
They need to get rid of that.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
But yeah, it's an interesting point. Park's actually funnily enough
you say that because on the weekend I was watching it,
and you're right. I'm not sure that that you know,
Rob Penny or Clayton McMillan or any of the coaches
have have rushed towards the headset when it's been handed
to them. Look, they've clearly been told that as part
of the broadcast deal they would like to get a
(14:36):
couple of words from the coaches. I'm not sure you
get a heck of a lot. And like you, I
would rather that stuff happened at halftime rather than when
the game's going on, because in this boat TJ. Jeff mctaine,
who's ever commentating, might just have to bring break away
and start commentating to try.
Speaker 8 (14:55):
Poor Steven Larkam it sounded like he was telling his
women and grend or or a birthday present story or something.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
You know.
Speaker 8 (15:03):
Just yeah, I don't shot the tries one hundred times
over interview the coaches in litt what's the game?
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Good on your parksy, I look good only for calling.
You made a good point at the first time of asking.
Please call again, mate. Yeah. Look, there's always innovation being
sought by the broadcasters, you know. Getting players miked up
obviously doesn't work in rugby not live anyway, I did
see what did I see? The other night? Adam Reynolds
was miked up for the for the Broncos in an
(15:29):
NRL game, not to talk to the commentators, but afterwards
they used that audio and put it over the top
of the footage it was that was really interesting because
it's completely unfiltered. But yeah, the the back and forth
while the game's going on, I've I've never been a
huge fan, but it's just the search for innovation. I
think parks are good to talk to you, mate, Holloway Jake,
(15:59):
you've seen him.
Speaker 9 (16:00):
You throw in that game around about four with leading
down there, and then the Chiefs came.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
Out the second half and they go up another level
and no team can keep with him when they're like that.
And also people go back to this week go against
the Blues, but people will get in there. Two main
people in my opinion for the Chiefs, apart from Dave mckindy,
Quintu Pie and Luke Gapson. You kept them, but also
as Cogwy shoulders, they were missing in their game and
I don't think the Blues will have won their game
(16:30):
had they been playing, so two crucial things made them
be onto any pony.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Look Jacobson and Supaia they've been from
end tos Aj, I totally agree they have been in
and look you take your you know, most important players
any tam. Look at the Crusaders. When will Jordan wasn't
there during the gay of the year. You know, they
didn't just didn't quite look the same side, did they they?
You know, they just weren't quite the same. But you know,
(16:55):
you make a good point. I think, yeah, I think
their return will be will be crucial.
Speaker 9 (17:00):
Yeah, the Crusaders aren't the same thing with our Scott
Barrett or Will Jordan. That's how crucial. I believe that
keeps them. That could good pie along with Daniel mcgindy
to the Crusaders, And I just believe people are saying
I could be wet weather and people don't realize it.
You're on Sunday night. How damn that ground was? That
was like what this is going to be like?
Speaker 5 (17:19):
Quoteyet there was like four degrees and it was really
really damp, and honestly, mate, they handling from the Chiefs
special in the sick half was absolutely spectacular. So they're
going to have the same conditions down the court. It
might be a little bit older, but as long as
they get a dry track, mate, I think I truly
believe third time lucky, the momentum and the luck and
(17:39):
hopefully we get the referee that we want and things
go out away with this time, mate, Good on.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
You aj good to hear from here so early in
the week mate, let's time on the weekend if you
get the opportunity. Angus Gardner will referee the game. That
was confirmed today. Angus Gardner is the referee. I think
that's a good appointment. I think he's been the best
across the season and I think he deserves that appointment.
I don't think you'll get too many arguments from the
coaches or the players about that particular appointment Angus Gardner
(18:08):
to host from Josh, I'd hate for the best season
of Super Rugby to be tainted by a Crusaders win.
And I hope you're not eating because the second part
of it says it's like a beautiful meal being soaked
and vomit. Thank you, Josh, ever a wonderful way with words.
This one says the most influential player on the park
(18:29):
won't be Damien McKenzie, it will be Will Jordan. You'd
agree with that, Graham, Oh.
Speaker 10 (18:36):
Too, right, I was, Yeah, I'm sorry about that guy's
meal with I hope he's not eating during the next
Saturday night's game. That's yeah, no, very funny. No, Well,
I could interview with Brent Hall. Yeah, I like what
Ethan Blackhead I said yesterday he's interviewed, I think it
was after the game actually Saturday night, and he said
(18:56):
that they actually put the players themselves. You know, I
actually have a lot of fondness for the stadium and
I think there's quite a bit of motivation in that
area and a lot of fans. You know, I'm talking
about a lot of people who don't go regularly, and
some that do go regularly talk a lot about next year,
and I go, look, I'm looking forward. This is last
week and I said, I'm looking forward to the Crusaders
playing the Blues. I'm not worrying about this year. And
(19:20):
I think that's there edit. You know, that's basically their attitude,
and that's the right one because it served us well,
you know, I mean Canterbury when won one for a while,
we had a few titles there and raised as the
coach and then the Crusaders were back in the final again.
And it's going to be it's going to be one
hell of a challenge something, there's no doubt, you know,
the toughest team we could have got up against. But
(19:42):
they're coming to a tough place to play. So, yeah,
it's going to be Will Jordan and Damian McKinsey. You know,
obviously they they're going to be crucial to both teams,
which you have a team ones.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
Good game.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I feel like Grandma, I feel like I'm Will Jordan.
I'm amazing and and you know, you look back to
last year when he wasn't there, and you look at
this year when he has been, and the diference is
so obvious to see. I just feel like Damien McKenzie
being a first five compared to Jordan at fallback, just
has more ability to influence the game. I'm not sure
(20:16):
what you think, and I'm sure Rivers, Ray, Hannah, Will Will,
you know, rise to the occasion as well, But I
just feel as though Damien McKenzie might have more opportunity
to influence the game than Will Jordan.
Speaker 10 (20:27):
Will oh well, first five naturally does no, you did
right there. I think Will Jordan's Yeah, I think he's
changed a bit, as we had the whole year off
injured last year. He seems to be he didn't have
been one for shirking things, but yeah, he's certainly making
up for in terms of being in the right place
at the right time. He's you know, he's popping up everywhere.
(20:50):
And yeah, but yeah, in terms of what the number
is on about, you're right, and I think Rivers ry Hannah. Yeah,
I've been so I'm proud. I'm not saying doing. Damien
McKenzie's established all black and we know how good he is.
But I have been very pleased with Rivers and I
think there's enough players around him. I don't think he's
acting like a possum in the headlights first life can be,
(21:11):
but no, it's a big challenge for him up against mckenniy,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I really enjoyed watching Taikimada as well. I have to say, Graham,
you know, and I was really disappointed when he got
in Jaiz. I'm sure everybody was not least a man himself,
but I thought he was growing into that role as well.
Speaker 10 (21:25):
A general game was outstanding, Yeah it was. But I
have to say, you know, I think Rivers is goalkicking.
He's a bit more experienced, and that seems they're not
phasing quite as much. And of course James O'Connor got
out of a couple of great particularly good Friday. But yeah, no,
(21:45):
but Rivers yeah, No, Ta Kamara will come back in
this year and it's give me a good competitions for
that spot whatever happens on Saturday, but I think we'll
do it. You know, you're not going to ever get
anything out of me otherwise.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
So no, no, And Graham, I wouldn't expect to I
know that. Yeah, Look, I expect the Hurricanes do when
every game they play. But yeah, but that's what fandom is.
And I look like you'll be pleased to know, Graham
that I'm coming to christ Church for this game on
Saturday night. I don't have any skin in the game,
as you know, I'm a Hurricanes fan, They're not in it,
(22:17):
but I'm coming down for the game and I look
forward to being part of the sendoff for Apollo Project Stadium,
which is the latest name for that for that patch. Actually, Graham,
you are still there. I want to chick. Has there
been any No, you've gone. It's a shame. Has there
been any news on what will happen to that to
(22:37):
that ground? Presumably it'll just go back to being a
ground that gets used for club rugby or rugby league.
Wasn't it Rugby League Park in christ Church? Before I've
got that wrong before before the earthquakes and when the
Crusaders needed something, when Lancaster Park or Jade Stadium or
am I whatever it was called, then I was no good.
(22:57):
So what's going to happen to that ground at Addington.
I'm sure we'll find out on the weekend. Yes, so
I found out today the very good news that Weekend Sport.
This coming weekend we'll come to you from christ Church
and on Saturday we're there ahead of the Super Rugby
Pacific Grand Final. So we've got to be in town.
Come and join us from midday at the rock Pool,
(23:20):
christ Church's original inner city gastro pub since nineteen ninety five.
What a place to do a radio show from. We'll
be there between midday and three, building up towards the
Grand Final. Our thanks to the team at the rock
Pool for hosting us this coming Saturday. That's where we
will be as we build up towards the Grand Final.
Full commentary available on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio from I
(23:42):
think we'll probably build up from just after six for kickoff,
just after seven o'clock. Half past seven is the time,
still a bit of time to take some rugby calls
if you've got some thoughts on this game. Nico Portia
is to come and Piney's power rankings as well. We're
back in a second News Talk SeeDB.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Forget the refs call, You make the call Olive eight
eighty eighty Sports Talk on your home of sport US
Talks EB Talks B.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
Seven thirty three Nico Portias in just a moment. They
opened the betting yesterday the tab on this game once
the Crusaders and the Chiefs were confirmed as the grand
final participants out of dollar ninety each a dollar ninety each,
and that has not moved in the time since. There
may be some movement around the time that the teams
(24:31):
are named if somebody important perhaps doesn't make it. For example,
and you know this is hypothetical, if Damien McKenzie was
left out of the chief side for it some reason,
if he injured himself, for wasn't available, whatever it was,
then obviously the Crusaders would beome favorite. I get the
feeling because it also moves on the weight of money
that comes in. I just feel as though the money
(24:53):
will come in on the Crusaders because they're at home
and because of the thirty one games. But like I say,
I just feel as though the most influential player on
the pitch could well be Damien McKenzie on Saturday night
speaking of who heeded it but immediate today and was
asked about the christ Church record.
Speaker 11 (25:08):
It's a pretty decent record, seem obviously clearly it says
how well they play at home and particularly in finals
rugby the success I've had, so it's a great challenge
for us. Like I said, we had success throughout the
year against them down in christ Church, but again that
doesn't mean too much at all coming into finals. So
it's a great challenge, a challenge we're definitely going to
step towards. And like I said, we've had experienced the
(25:29):
last couple of years and finals, we haven't quite been
able to to now that last game, So I'm sure
we're hoping we can do that this weekend.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
The Chiefs in their third consecutive Grand Final. They've lost
the last two two years ago to the Crusaders, last
year to the Blues. Do they take any lessons from
those two matches into this one?
Speaker 11 (25:45):
You take from previous years what you've learned, and I
guess for us it's just been accurate and trusting what
we've done throughout the year. There's no need to change
anything or reinvent the wheel. It's just about being accurate
in finals and making the most of the moments if
you're given. So that's one thing we're going to make
sure we've focused on this week has been accurate and
around our game plan. And you know, like I said,
it's not going to be anything that's special that's going
(26:07):
to happen. It's about the team that now is the
basic stuffs really well and you're making sure we really
nil our week and put ourselves in a good position
to be confident to go down there on said day
and put in a good performance.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
This match will be the last four Chiefs head coach
Clayton McMillan. He's off to take up his new role
at Munster, the man they call Donk. So do they
do it for Donk on Saturday?
Speaker 5 (26:27):
For Donk?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Do it for the region?
Speaker 11 (26:29):
You know, like do it for our fans, our families.
The support we had throughout the year has been amazing
and the disappointed in the last few years we haven't
quite been outder to win a finals. So yes, it's
not only just doing it for guys who are leaving.
It's not for guys who have been here in the past,
our fans, our family, our region. We've got a lot
to play for in a lot of motivation.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
And finally from Damien McKenzie, how important is it to
stay grounded across the week?
Speaker 11 (26:53):
You know Finals is not till said day, so making
sure we build the week nicely. You know, you can
say it's any other game, but it's not.
Speaker 6 (27:00):
You know, finals is different.
Speaker 11 (27:02):
So I think it's just given the boys confidence throughout
the week that you know, we have for a reason,
the prep we've put in throughout the years has really
paid off. And again it's it's one more to go.
So just building now week nicely, making sure we now
everything off. Then we get the Saturday, we can put
the books away and just scart me and play rugby.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
That is Damien McKenzie with some early in the week
thoughts about Saturday night's Super Rugby Grand Final twenty four
to eight. Changing Tech New Zealand's most successful male snow
sports athlete, two time Winter Olympic Games medallist and one
of the most decorated half pipe athletes in history, Nico
Portius is stepping back from Olympic competition and will no
(27:40):
longer compete in free ski half pipe. Party has won
bronze as a sixteen year old on the free ski
half pipe at the twenty eighteen Winter Olympics and then
made history four years later.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
So you see that switch double quirk ten and then
he goes for the sixteen to twenty and does that
back to backs.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Of Bolls directions. This run is insane. Mieko Party is
putting it down.
Speaker 12 (28:08):
You can hear what's team New Zealand at the bottom
of the run, thoughts of that, and it's going to
be a score on run number one for Nico Partis
of New Zealand of ninety three the lead in this
Olympic final. Congratulations to Nico Partis of New Zealand, the
Olympic champion of half fight here of Beijing twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Two, landing a right and left double corked sixteen to
twenty combination to win Olympic gold at the Beijing Winter Games.
He's also won two X Game gold medals, a World
Championship title, in five World Cup medals, and in the
twenty twenty two New Year's Honors List, he was named
a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Nico
(28:47):
Portius is with us. Congratulations on an absolutely stellar career. Nico,
can you talk to us about what has led you
to the decision to call it a day. Yeah.
Speaker 13 (28:58):
Look, I'm twenty three now and I've been competing on
the competitive PLF flight scene, in competing scenes since I
was ten, and so that's over half my life. And
I think throughout that period of time, from the age
of ten into your early twenties is when you do
a lot of a lot of the growing that you
do in your life, and you formulate, formulate your own
(29:19):
opinions and your own way of thinking. And I think that,
you know, being in the competitive environment so for so
much my life sort of led me to, in the end,
lose that little bit of competitive passion, you would say.
And so, yeah, I made the decision while I was
healthy and can move into other sides of skiing, and yeah,
(29:43):
it's a choice that I've been able to make on
my own terms, which is you know, something that you
don't really get to do. So I'm just stoked, Yeah,
really really happy.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
So you talked there about the competitive passion dulling it
a little bit, what about the passion for skiing is
that still there?
Speaker 13 (29:58):
Yeah, the passion for skiing is more alive than ever ever.
And that's what excites me so much. Is Yeah, absolutely
love skiing, and it's you know, what I love to do.
And I'm lucky that the sport has other areas in
which you can make your career and those things really
really excite me.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Just before we look ahead, was there a time during
this thought process where you considered staying, considered continuing competing.
Speaker 13 (30:28):
Look, I don't think I like, I won't go back
to competing. I know that the door is shut. But
throughout this past year, you know, one of the reasons
why I did want to step away from competing was
to give myself a challenge and to learn and to
put myself into new situations. And so, you know, sometimes,
as we all do, when stuff gets hard a little bit,
you go, oh, well, maybe I could just go back
(30:48):
to what is known and what I know. And so
there definitely was times where I was like, oh, maybe
I could just go back, But yeah, I feel extremely
comfortable with the decision now and it's something that just
excites me. Yeah, and I just can't wait to see
what's in stuff in the future.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
As I was reading at that list of achievements at
the start of the channel, I felt like I should
be talking to a forty five year old. With everything
you've done, You're only as to say, you're only twenty three.
You achieved success at a very young age and a
lot of it. Has that made the decision a bit
more straightforward.
Speaker 13 (31:19):
Yeah, Look, I set out to achieve a certain certain
things when I started my competitive career, and you know,
it feels crazy even for me to say it, but
I have achieved those things, and I you know, it's
not like I need seven Olympic gold medals or I
(31:40):
need this. You know, I achieved what I wanted to
do and and you know that's all you can do
at the end of the day.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
So, yeah, you've given us so many amazing moments to
go or what what stands out the most for you?
What are you proudest of?
Speaker 13 (31:56):
I mean, I really you know, the Olympic gold was
something that was really really special for me. That is yeah,
I don't know, just that in itself, and the challenges
and that you face in order to get to that position,
and you know, the hard times that you push it through,
and then also the good times that you have in
the build up that you know, it's not only about
(32:17):
just having that gold medal around your neck at the
end of the day, It's about every single moment that
has gone and to get to get you to where
you are. And so yeah, I think I think that
really tops the list for me as in a limp
of gold.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
You've also been somebody who others have looked up to,
have used as as a role model. You've you've provided
aspirational pathways I'm sure for many, not only ken We
skies but others as well. Is that something you take
pride in?
Speaker 13 (32:45):
Yeah, it is, It is. I would like to think
that I've inspired someone to do what I do. And
I think that's that's huge. Is that if you can
share your passion with someone else and you can see
them gain positive experiences from it, then I think that's
you know what matters at the end of the day.
And yeah, I am. I hope that I have done that.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Well, you certainly have. So what now, mate, what will
you turn your attention to now?
Speaker 13 (33:13):
Yeah? So, I guess the cool part of our skiing
is that there's other areas to make your career and
and so I'm moving into more of the filming side
of things, from producing and directing alongside videographers some video
projects over the past few years, and that's something I
have a real passion for. And then also the opportunities
that I've been given by my sponsors, whether that's helping
(33:35):
organize and run events or you know, doing product design
and working on your products for those companies, and that's
something that I'm really looking forward to continuing in the
future and also exploring any new opportunities that come my way.
I'm just here to learn and want to experience new
things that maybe I wouldn't have had time to in
the past, and so yeah, I'm really excited to see
(33:57):
what's to come outstanding.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
I mean, you don't reckon you'll miss it. You can
walk it back. You don't reckon you'll miss the competitive
side of it.
Speaker 13 (34:07):
Nah, I don't think I will. I really don't. I
think I've completely chucked that out of my head and
just looking toward the future now.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Congrats on a brilliant career, Nico, and thank you for
all the wonderful moments that you've given us. I can't
wait to see what's next for you and appreciate you
taking the time for a chat this evening.
Speaker 13 (34:24):
Yeah cool, Thank you very much for having me on.
And it's been a pleasure.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Now, it's been a pleasure to chat to you, Nico
and to watch you over these years. Nico Portius calling
it a day on his competitive skiing anyway, but moving
on to other ventures seems so strange, doesn't it. You
know at the start, what you know, why have you
made this decision? Well, I'm twenty three now, goodness me,
he muz was on Texas piney. How do you retire
(34:48):
at twenty three? The guy surely hasn't even reached his
prime yet. He's a freak. I'm gutted. Well, we did
say he started competing when he was what ten, so
I guess he's done thirteen years. It is over half
his life. And the fact that he achieved it all
so early, I mean it means that he can he
can if he wants to and does want to buy
(35:10):
the looks of it, he can shut the door on
that part of his life. He can say I've done that.
I've got a whole with another seventy years to do
other stuff. Now. Now, a lot of sports people take
a lot longer. They can't. They can't pull the pin
at twenty three. There's still a lot more to do.
Nico Potius, one of our greats, our most successful male
snow sports athlete of all time sixteen to eight. Let's
(35:32):
take a great comeback with Monday Nights feature Piney's Power Rankings.

Auckland City and that many goals ten in the back
of their nets at the Club World Cup, and we'll
lift it up and there he is, and there he's turn.
Speaker 12 (36:03):
That dominance asserts it and then he's the outgoing Thomas Mula.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
That makes it a memorable day in Cincinnati and a
sobering day in Cincinnati, as the gulf between one of
football's big guns and our plucky amateurs was rather ruthlessly exposed.
Nine nine's Liam Lawson a day to forget for the
key we at the Canadian Grand Prix. After starting from
pitt Lane, he was forced to retire under team orders
(36:30):
at the back of the pack on the fifty sixth
of seventy laps starting for the pit lane today is
going to end up with a retirement.
Speaker 6 (36:36):
He's been sold to box and retire the car he
was running last onto the road.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
The retirement due to a power unit issue mins disappointing.
Speaker 6 (36:45):
Obviously, it was going to be a very difficult race
anyway from the pit lane, but we had a cooling
issue at the end, so unfortunately we had to retire.
Speaker 2 (36:53):

to shoot underpar across the entire four rounds. A word
too for Ryan Fox, who fired one of the best

by the Blues last weekend an impressive fashion against the Brumbies.
Speaker 15 (39:37):
And the Maglock kicks it out. She's all over red

absolutely heroic Game four over the Indiana Paces in Indianapolis
and then locking the series up to all and it's
is he blayming Auckland City for that terrible game? They
didn't design the World Cup goodness for me?
Speaker 2 (41:11):
So you do have some feedback there? Oh just a
little bit. Yeah, no, I don't have Oklahoma City on
my notes, but I'll take them on board. You're right

Speaker 8 (41:21):

Speaker 7 (41:26):
It's back in Oklahoma City. And then if they're in
Game six, will be Indianapolis. If there's a Game seven,
it'll be back in Oklahoma City.
