Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk z'b.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Well Brown joins the program.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Now, good day to you, will there, Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
And thanks very much for joining us. What a great
piece of news. You're coming from the wonderment of V
eight supercars, those great big tanks over to wings and
slicks in New Zealand in the used to be the
two out a racing series. I say that because it's
easy to pronounce than the ct frock, But we'll run
from that. What brings you here? Why are you doing this?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah? I guess you know, it's been probably eight or
nine years since I've been in an open wheeler, and
in twenty seventeen I wanted to do it. Was like
you said, trs back then, but I guess budget just
didn't allow for me to race it. But you know,
after winning the Supercar Championship this year and having some
great sponsors like Red Bull, I'm able to come over
and race in an open wheeler again. So I'm looking

(01:01):
forward to get back in one.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
So there's three race weekends you're doing and they back
on back. Just talk through what you're actually doing over
you because it's a five race series playing me and
it goes back on back on back, on back on back.
What's your engagement.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, so I'm doing three race weekends. Unfortunately is the
twelve hour. First twelve hour falls on one of the
one of the race weekends, so you know, I already
knew I was doing that, so I had to miss one.
So we decided that I'd do the three of Tony's tracks,
which I'm looking forward to. I've had a bit of
a go on each one of them, so yeah, just

(01:34):
didn't wasn't able to line up doing the whole series,
but I'm more than happy doing three.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
How instrumental has Tony been in bringing you over here,
because straight away you mentioned his tracks and they are
amazing Two Polehampton Downs and Highlands too, so he'd had
a lot to do with you coming over will Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Well, I've done with Josie a lot, which I believe.
You know, that's Tony's head lady over there that sorts
it all out, and she's been fantastic and really hoped
making the deal come together. So that's been cool. And
like you say, all the Tony's trucks over there amazing.
You know, it was lucky enough to race tail both year.
I've been to Highland and Hampton Downs before, so you know,
at least i've at least I know the trucks a

(02:12):
little bit.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
We're talking of course of Tony Quinn has been huge
influencer in Motus bort over here in New Zealand. What
do you know after that long not being in a
Wings and Slicks car, It's about about how they actually
behave you've had first time experience at Topel. Be interesting
to see what the difference is between those taxis and
these little nimble things.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, that's right. There's gonna be a lot of differences
from the supercars to the open wheeler. But I being
quite lucky, I've done a fair bit of GT three
racing this year, which is quite an arrow based car,
so hopefully that that is something similar. But yeah, not
being in an open wheeler for for a long time,
but we've seen people like SBG and other drivers come

(02:54):
over and still do still do a great job. So yeah,
we'll see what happens.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
If you could replicate what Shane Doan Gisbergen did in
the Racing Series a couple of years back, where it
came to win the New Zealand Grand Prix from pet Lane.
I'll be very very impressive. Will Brown joins us as
we look toward joining us at jan eleven, twelve, eighteen,
nineteen Feb eight nine to three races or the three
weekends he'll be involved in. What kind of lead up

(03:19):
do you get? How much time do you actually spend
in the machine itself?

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, I think it'll be straight into the race week
and we've we've got a practice dale on the Thursday
before before TALPOI, which will be great, but yeah, no
practice days really for myself. You know, it's sort of
the off season now, and you know I'll go away
and then come back to those rounds over there, So
it's going to be a steep learning curve the sort
of two practice days before the first round, but hopefully

(03:45):
we can get on top of it, on top of
it in those times.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Obviously, Rebel, Wampole and Triple eight keen for you to
do this because I know they can be sometimes reasonably
stripped on what their peddlers do outside of racetime. They're
quite happy you're going to be racing in this category.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, no, definitely are. They've been very supportive of pretty
much all the racing I've wanted to do throughout the year. Here.
You know, I try and race as many different cars
as I can. I did twenty three or four race
weekends this year, hoping to do similar next year, and
I think that just helps helps me in supercars. The
more you can do something, generally, the better you get.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Well, this is Van Gzbergen's theory as well. I didn't
go to the gym sitting go on my furtness by
racing every other weekend. He was racing in something else
and we've seen the success he's had. Is there a
category that's really done it for You've just gone yet?
I really enjoyed this style of racing.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah, I'm not sure. I like you. I generally most
of racing I do I enjoy, so it's hard to
put my finger on just one. You know, I did
the GT racing this year and that was quite enjoyable
to do something different and a full series of it. Also,
the NASCAR race was an amazing opportunity and something that
I'm hoping to do more of next year. But yeah,
I think I think coming over and being in an

(04:56):
open wheeler again or will be great. You know, It's
not something that I've done for a lot of years now,
so I'm looking forward to that talent.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
As far as targets, just get through the weekend, keep
it clean, or you think you're going to win this?
What are you looking to achieve out of these weekends?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Will Oh, I wouldn't be coming if if I wasn't
trying to win a race. You know, if that's if
that's possible or not. I'm not sure justus yet. I
haven't driven the car, but I don't do a category
or race a car just to drive around.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
And now you're a Vight Supercar champion, something I expect
as you were growing up. This is what you wanted
to achieve. Anything changed for you in the way you think,
the way people treat.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Now, nothing's really changed, to be honest, still doing the
same old things I was three weeks ago before that,
so now it's all pretty similar.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
And then starting next season you wreck up and running
again and just as excited I expected you were at
the start of last one.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, next next season is going to be a big one, obviously.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
You know.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
It's cool Coiled Or won the championship this year. It's
a lot of change coming to our category next year
with the way the points system works, So it's going
to be a bit of a reset. I think a
little bit harder to win the championship next year with
the way the final system works, but I'm looking forward
to that.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Tatan leaves out of different categories to do that. How's
that landed with the drivers and the teams?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Will I think a lot of drivers and teams have
taken on board and quite happy with it. To be honest,
us that Red Bull Ample should probably be the most
disappointed because, you know, probably the most consistent team this year,
and that's how you win a championship with the current
style of points. But next year, you know, it's one
of those things that actually comes down to four drivers

(06:36):
and the points get pretty much reset to the last
round and it's whoever has the best last round. So yeah,
it's a bit of a change, but I think it'll
make it very exciting for everyone at home watching the
last round. So yeah, I think they thought we needed
a change and they've done that. So we'll take that
on board and sign wins.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
And one last thing before we let you go. Will Brown,
Triple eight Race Engineering peddler and the eighty seven car
current VA Supercar champion. What did you make of the
New Zealand entries over this season? Because your category has
been dominated by Kiwis for far too long, so I
reckon all of your fans will be stoked. He's no
keyis with and Killy. But out of the guys coming through,

(07:16):
who do you like the look of?

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Yeah, no, it's it's been great battling them, but I'm
glad to see it Ozzie get up for once. But
you know, some of the New Zealand goes so fast,
but it's been you know, Ryan Wood if he come
into the category he's got, he's extremely fast and talented.
I think as he gets a bit more experience over
the years, he'll be one to watch. And Matt Payin's
doing a fantastic job as well, so they're definitely fast guys.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Great to meet you, Will Brown, looking forward to seeing
you track Sibe wing. You turn up here to the
land of the long White Cloud, the Shaky aisles and
thanks very much for your time. You go well, keep safe,
happy Christmas.
