Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from Used Talks EDB getting you close enough to
smell the sea spray the All Sport Breakfast whip Darcy Waldgrave,
why from when you're point at sale GP, Used Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Now we can smell the sea spray. Okay, and I
got to tell you what that Errand seagulls finally had enough, squawked,
crapped and flown away and the ego seagull doing what
seagulls should do, off toward the Harbor Bridge. And that's
where we are right now, looking over at the Harbor
Bridge and I'm going to talk to on a beautiful
sunrise here. We've got the skytower up behind, so much
to look at. This really is an amazing venue for
(00:44):
sale GP, and we're now joined to buy. Blair Tuke.
He's the co CEO of the Black Foils and the
Wing Trimmer as well. Blair Chuk good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Good morning Darcy, so Blair, welcome on in finally in Auckland,
finally in the Big Smoke, sailing around the hold Acki Golf.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
It's a huge event for sailing and that is an
understand statement, but a massive event as well for Sattle GP.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Oh, yeah, it certainly is.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
You can really feel the buzzer around the city. Like
you said, it's awesome to finally bring Salgipe to Tom Mckeemakoda,
Auckland right up in a harbor. Yeah, it's going to
be a spectacular weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
We've got an awesome forecast, a little bit of rain around,
but apart from the rain or at least the showers,
epic wind easterly winds for Aucklander's which will be a
nice respite from all those sou Westers over a Christmas break.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
But yeah, big easily flow on this weekend. So it's
going to be a great race track right up in
the harbor.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
As the co ceo and the wing trummer do the
conditions you believe put your team in a better position
considering your local knowledge.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Well completely honest, we haven't sailed these types of boats
right up in a harbor, people fee this weekend. It's
a very unique race course which sales GPS all about
trying to get the racing as close to fans on
shore as as possible and iconic locations around the world,
(02:17):
so to have it here in the City of Sales
rather than a harbor. Harbor Bridge is a backdrop. Skytower's
a backdrop. Yeah, it's going to be phenomenal, So I'm
not sure local conditions will help too. Match and when
we're racing against best sailers in the world, and everyone
in this league is pretty used to rocking up to
a new venue and having to figure it out fast,
(02:39):
So yeah, I think you'd have to expect all teams
to get to grips for the conditions quickly. I think
probably the biggest new components with the T foils, and
they're going to take quite a lot for teams to
try and master and get the most out of. And
then for us from a team point of view, we're
obviously still pretty new as a unit, with Leo slotting
(03:01):
into the flight control the roll second event after the
Dubai event, which was really light wind, so I think
we can still have to be a little bit cautious
or how much coming into these things where we have
you know, we still need to earn our stripes as
a unit, so we'll be trying to do that as
best we can this weekend.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
So the T Force like brand new technology up from
the previous iteration, which is the L foils. They're lighter,
they're quicker, probably I suppose a better profile. Is there
a big difference that you've noticed between the.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Two, Well, I think, first off, yeah, the foil is
more optimized for speed, so that the session shape of
the foiler is designed to have a higher top speed,
and being a T foil shape, it gives a little
bit more stability to the boats in the straight line.
And I think you'll find this weekend being the first
(03:58):
team had a few days on the foils still, So
with that, I think it takes a little bit to
get used to the timing and an accuracy through maneuvers,
so I think you might mute slightly worse maneuvers at
least in the beginning of the weekend by teams. But
in general, I think the foils a little bit easier
(04:18):
to control, which should help to both more in control
and you can push it harder than you should be
able to get those higher speeds too, which I think
we're going to see this weekend with the forecast we've
got on hand, so.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Speed splare possibly over one hundred carl meters an hour.
You've already pushed ninety seven k Sir Russell Coots. He
seems to think that the introduction of these foils will
pretty much level the playing field right across the board.
Do you agree with that?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, I think that's a fair statement. Seeing over the
first four seasons of sale GP, the teams with more experience,
especially on the high speed board, so also in alf oil,
but there was two different types of alf oils, what
they call lightier boards and the high speed boards. The
lightier boards were litle bit easier to sail, and you
(05:07):
saw teams with more similar performance. The high speed boards
took a little bit more finesse, I think, and some
of the teams, like the Australians, some other sailors that
end up scattered around the teams. They got a lot
of time on those in season one before a lot
of the people involved now were there and that took
a long time to catch up. And I think you'd
(05:29):
you'd probably fair to say that Ozzie's still had an
edge on the high speed boards even come the end
of season four. So the teeth wolds now new for everyone.
The experienced sailors are still there scattered throughout the teams,
but I think in general that will even the playing
field up more.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
I know France again, right they sat in the wings
in Jubai. They had issues. Then they took out five
points to make up for that. But again, are they
not going to be there for a wing sail connect
to issue that's jumped upon them. So the sideline they
get the same points allocation, but really upsetting for the
French team that are French fans and are not good
(06:09):
for the series to have them not sailing the game.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
No, it's a shame. I think the league was, and
all of us were pretty excited to get twelve boats.
First time having twelve boats. You know, we experienced you
know situation last season where we had to sit out
after a break is just a slightly different scenario where
the boat was on a time run from a manufacturing
(06:35):
point of view. So the actual platform was our AC
fifty from Bermuda when I say ours the America's Cup win,
and that got trans formed over the last four months
or so into an F fifty, so similar heals, but
quite different in all its components. But the wing is
(06:56):
brand new and that came out of Southampton and there
was obviously some sort of I don't know all the
details with some sort of mistake in the manufacturing and
that hasn't gone together it should have, so that sitting
this weekend out again yet disappointing for the league. It's
nice to see that they get awarded the average points,
so you know, overall for the season they'll still obviously
(07:18):
be it righting with a shot, but yeah, they'll be
definitely missing that time on the water as a unit.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Hey, wishing you the best, Blaird Check. Thanks so much
for your time. Look, it's a wonderful Maritimes Stadium, the bridge,
the skytower at a tak too, and of course a
tremendous crowd as well. Go well, sale hard, sail safe
and let's nail those points and so you can carry
on with your position the very top of the league
(07:46):
for sale, gp bleaard Chop. Thanks for your time.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah, I can't wait, Thanks Darthy.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Yeah, we can wait because we have to wait. That
ain't too far away, not from I'm setting right now.
The seagulls keep turning up and it's actually quite impressive.
It's just sat there that one and Howard looking straight
at me. I might be I feel little Alfred Hitchcock
right now. I think we could be in trouble. We
are at Winyard Point live from a sale GP in
(08:11):
Auckland running over the next two days. It's a huge event.
Great to be on board with us and Leo Takahashi
flight Controller, also joins the show later on in the
