Nineteen minutes after seven, massive day, massive weekend around the lake.
That is top of course I speak. The women are
competing today, the men are competing tomorrow.

What are they doing?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
It's the twenty twenty four iron Man seventy point three
World Championships in Towport. That is one hundred and thirteen
k of racing, which is seventy point three mile, two
k swim, ninety k bike ride, twenty one k run. Huge,
really really important and the wonderful wide world of iron Man.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
And we're joined by Jack Moody. Now, who'll be right
at the four I'm sure morning mate, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Yeah, hey, thank you for having me along. You're excited.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Thanks very much for joining us.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Jack, You've got a rather large event coming up tomorrow
in and around that toepor iron Man time. I ask
every iron Man this, you've taken, Levy, your censors or something?
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Mate on earth? Would you do to yourself?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Oh? Yeah, I'm definitely a sucker for punishment. I do
ask myself that I know ten twelve times a year
now as we line up for various start lines all
around the world, but pretty special to have the world
champs back here only three hours drive away, and said,
you know, have you everyone rolled into town from all
across the world to what has been a cracking last
couple of weeks down in topul.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
So what is your drive?
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Why do you do this right from the get go
in your first peerin in the wet suit and jumped
in the drink?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
What what drives you? What's your operation working? Like?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
I mean?
Speaker 4 (01:38):
It all kind of started with it as a bit
of a foolish event with a bunch of mates back
about six seven years ago, And luckily enough, I actually
went pretty well and I didn't suffer as much as
the rest of them, And so you know, I got
bitten by the bug pretty quickly with a bit of
success as often as the case, and I quickly wanted
to see how fast I could go and how far
(02:00):
I could push myself. And that's pretty much still the
same case. Now. I've just starting to line up against
and better people every time I tow the start line,
which is really cool.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
So where do you sit globally?
Speaker 2 (02:10):
You've just come back from overseas, you've been winning some comps.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
So you're right up there at the point of en,
aren't you, Jack.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah. So there's a different few different brands that float
around the world now for what is essentially that half
iron Man or for Ironman distance and iron Man being
the big brand. But I went and race Challenge Global
Serious this year. So I've just won the World Challenge
Global Series, just come back from China about four weeks away,
wrapping up that part of the season, and now it's
(02:37):
time to come and jump across, jump ship to another
brand and try and see where I can stack up
in the Ironman World Champs, which will just be the
one off event the brand.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
So why was it off? It's between the brands. It's
just a matter of whatever sticky you got to wear
on your front door.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Some people are Apple, some people are Samsung. It's exactly
the same idea and triathlon, but.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
You're allowed to swap willy nilly, because I don't know
if I could rock a Samsung and an Apple at
the same time be too confusing.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Oh. Absolutely, Yeah, we are able to jump around sometimes.
You know, if you stay loyal to one brand for longer,
you're going to start this opportunity to rack up a
bit more prize money or sponsors will align with various
brands as well, So it is a business at the
end of the day that this is my job, which
is pretty scary to say, and I didn't think that
was going to be the case six seven years ago
(03:24):
when I got into it, but it kind of loved
every step along the way.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Good are the benefits in this job? Do you get
decent leave to get sick days?
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, there's no sick days and there's no leave. There's
seldom any days off, and I'm sure the family will
be scratching my head when I go out for a
run on Christmas morning, but that's all kind of part
of the beauty. And we do it because we love.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
It, but you do it because you love it, but
plainly it helps me out to feed everybody too. So
you're working okay, there there's enough money to keep you
going competitively for what I suppose, as long as you're
good enough.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Jack totally. I mean I actually still work part time
back up in Auckland, so I haven't lost touch of
working entirely, and I actually also do it for the
social connect as well as I've decided when I went
professional to work in retail, which was a kind of
a different sideway step from being an engineering for a
few years. But it's really nice to just kind of
(04:16):
connect with the community and retail setting from you know,
when you're training twenty hours to thirty hours a week
can be a pretty lonely affair, so it's actually just
nice to if you see a few people a couple
of days a week.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
So way back onto your real job. I mean, seventy
point three World Championship coming up on Sunday. What's the
trick to winning this? I'm sorry it's not one one
off trick, but where's your focus lives as far as
to getting up there and being in position to challenge
at the end?
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah, I mean I am fortunate, like my run is
my strength, and we finished with a run, which is
always handy. So for me, it's going to be a
case of hanging as tough as possible, producing the best
possible swim and getting myself in a group. On the bike.
We are like a non drafting event, so we do
have to space out along the road, but just that
(05:04):
mental edge of having a few people around he certainly
makes the load a bit easier as we ride around
out to REPAEROA and back and if I come off
in touch on the bike, which is the plan, then
it's time to have a bit of fun on the run.
And it's certainly a run course. I think that suits
me and pretty realistic of what I need to do
to put myself at the point end of the race.
On the run and done the training and it's kind
(05:25):
of now time to try and show it.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Well.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Why does the run suit you? Is it the elevation?
How does it work? What works for you?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, it's not like a lot of these courses around
the world often end up quite flat, and you know,
if you run around top enough, there's actually plenty of hills,
and so it is a bit more of a cross
country centric course with a few rolling hills as we're
not only on the footpath along the lake's edge, but
we do run along some of the roads behind it
that just kind of create that just a bit of
shift and elevation, which makes that run course just a
(05:53):
little bit tougher and breaks up that sort of flat
monotony of a boring run course.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
It's all about challenging yourself, but there are other challenges.
Do you think about that, do you know who's about
that might actually challenge it at the top.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Do you take that into consideration.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Yeah, totally. There's we all kind of know each other
and we throughout the year. It's not often we all
get to line up on the same start line at
the same time, but we will watch each other sort
of eagle eyed across the course of the season and
we do cross paths quite regularly. And it's called that
we have so many kiwis at the point end of
the sport kind of shows the history that we've got
in trithle On in New Zealand. And I'm almost certain
(06:30):
it will be a kiwi on top come Sunday. Hopefully
it's me, but it could be the likes that Hayden
Wilde or Carl Smith as well. So it's a pretty
exciting time for the sport in New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
We're tellent out there. I hope you have a wonderful
time out there. Keep it real and keep right to
the point at the end of the field with your run.
Last thing before I go, what's with the swim? I
think I've meant a try ethinte that enjoys it or
thinks they're any good at it, But how key is that.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Yeah, especially when you've come from running and you took
up swimming very late and the pieces often. You know,
it's definitely my achilles here in the sport and the
amount of time have invested in it over the last
you know, since I've started the sport has been ridiculous
and this year was a big shift with me to
jump across to a different swim coach. You have to
(07:19):
swim with the kids in a different swim squad, and yeah,
it's just for repetition, as that's almost ten thousand hour rule,
which I thought i'd be there by now, but it
hasn't happened yet, So I just got to keep plugging
away at it. And I'm sure everyone else is in
the same boat.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
If that's a rule, I should be the best broadcast
in the world right now.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
So I'll just push that to one side. Jack Moody,

That should be the last bit. Well, otherwise you start
off all weight and cold and you'll chafe. It's that
horrible stuff, Buddy.

Wouldn't be a spectator to watch, though, would it? All
