Speaker 2 (00:11):
EDB NEWSBALKSB right on half past eight here on the
All Sport Breakfast. Well, the athletics summer season ramps up
today Timidoo playing host to the traditional Lovelock Classic event.
So for a preview, great to welcome back for twenty
twenty five to News Talks edby Murray McKinnon.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Morning to you, Murray.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
And this is sort of the start of a great,
big series of events over the coming months, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
It is correct, yes, and it always sets off from
the all top athletes. Well, some of the top athletes
like to go there and compete and get going for
the season, so it always a great event.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
And are the men's and women's miles? These the two
sort of the big ones for this classic.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
They are the annual Lovelock Mile to the men and
the women's mile also also as a feature event. So yep,
a lot of interest in the Lovelock Mile for men.
Homus Carson holds that race record of four minutes and
ten seconds from twenty twelve, and looking at the field
that they've got assembled, I think there's a great chance.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
That that record could go wonderful. Yeah, so good Field
emerge for these two races.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Yes, I'll put my money on David Lee. He ran
four to two for the mile last year, so he's
knocking on the door of going under the form minute barrier.
If he does so, he'll gained an extra four hundred
dollars which they will be giving if you go into
four minutes. He also will received six hundred six hundred
dollars for winning the race. But David Lee I think
has a good chance. Daniel Prescott a four to seven milers.

(01:37):
There is also Angus Ceva. He is a four to
six miler Ethan's smaller. He was second for the last
two years in this event, so he'll be wanting to
improve on that if he can and climb up to
the winner's circle. James McLay a four to six miler

(01:59):
from Southland. He competed at the World Under twenty Championships
last year in Peru, so'll be interested to see how
he goes in the mile. Just to the women's mile,
the head ones there would be Tilly Hollier, who was
second in twenty twenty three. Has a PB of four
forty three, so that's close to the race record they
are held by Rebecca Aikenhead at four forty two, so

(02:22):
she should I think within the women's mile, what kind.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Of former people generally, and at this point of the season,
I guess not just for the mile, but the wider
field it.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Well, I've probably come through some good winter train that
got a bit more conditioning under their belt and they
would be looking to try and open the year with
a good time. That leads into the other classic meetings
this season and then on into the Nationals down in
Dunedin in March.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Other events. I said, there's a bit of a familiar
name in the men's one hundred meter sprints which will
be exciting.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Correct. TM Wilpin is in the one hundred meters, the
national champion for the last two years, holds the national
resident record at ten point one eight and holds the
race record here in Timaru ten point four to three
from twenty twenty two. He'll be up against John Gerber
from Otago who was the second to helping in the

(03:15):
national championships, and Gerber's also in the two hundred meters.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Any particular names in the women's one hundred that we
should be looking out for Murray.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Georgia Gibbons is in one hundred and two hundred meters,
and another one I've interested is Phoebe Laker in the
four hundred meters National under sixteen champion New Zealand Secondary
School's champion fifty six seconds. She's a real one to
watch for the future too. She's running exceptionally well and
it'd be interesting to see what she can achieve today

(03:43):
over the four hundred meters.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
So what about shotput?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
We obviously have got quite a few familiar names now
across both men's and women's shotput in is there any
of those big names taking part or are they going
to be joining a little bit later in the summer.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
No, yeah, later in the summer, yes, No, there's none
of those top mens in the men's shot put and
discus throw both Cameron Moffatt and Karen Fowler are competing,
and in the women's events is Hannah Sanderlands, who's the
top long jether should be competing in the long jump?

Speaker 3 (04:13):
What about Hamish Kurr.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Obviously we're pretty much one of the biggest names of
athletics of twenty twenty four in New Zealand with the
goals in Paris.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Are any sign of him yet?

Speaker 4 (04:23):
No, No, he's not. It would be great if he
was there. In the high jump, Adam Stack, who competed
last season and always was pretty close to second in
most of the events. He's a two to ten high jubber,
he'd be there, also Ty Winyard who's done two point
zero six meters, and Quinn Hartley at one point ninety
seven meters high jumber. But interestingly you mentioned hamus Kerr.

(04:45):
His partner Maddie Wilson is in the women's high jump
and the women's javelin throw.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Looking forward to seeing some of those results come in today,
especially those two feature race mile events.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Murray, really appreciate your time. Have a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Thank you, Adam.
