Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Ten minutes away from eight o'clock we head a busy
old morning this morning with studio guest David Nika. Just
after seven o'clock this morning. It's my pleasure now to
welcome to our country Sport Gold Sports Studio Olympic gold
medalist in the high jump, Hamish Curve morning, Hamish Welcome.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Whating mate?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
How are we very well? More importantly, how you doing
back home again now after Paris? Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
It's wonderful, isn't it. I'm so stoked to be home,
that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
A month into calling yourself an Olympic champion, has it
sunk in yet?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
No, No, it definitely hasn't. I think it's going to
take a while. But it's also you know, it's just
been such a blur. It's been so exciting.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Was it life changing?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah? Any ways, you know, I think I think if anything,
it just gives me confidence that, you know, we worked
really really hard for the stream and we achieved it,
and so it's now it sort of just blows open
the doors of what's possible.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Being the first key we not just to win a
middle in high jump, But to win gold at the
big Games, how special is that?

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah? Look, I mean I wanted to meddle. I definitely,
you know, that was that was the goal. But once
once I knew I was in a middle position, I
really did want that goal because it was it was
just a step above everything else.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Rather ironic really, And the season, I mean, what's changed?
You had an incredibly disappointing World Champs, missing out and
even making the final. Then in the space of just
twelve months you're an Olympic champion. What change?

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, I mean, look that that World World Champs was
a bit of a kick out the ass, I think,
and I think I think it was, you know, it
was it was perfect to have that twelve months out.
You know, I think that there was some stuff that
I was doing in the background which was probably not
the best for performance. And I think that, you know,
as a team, we really had to sit down and

(01:47):
have some honest conversations around around how we worked, and
we made some changes because of that. Obviously, I brought
in a new coach to kind of run the show,
and and I really stepped up my kind of level
of commitment. And yeah, it's pretty crazy to think that
in the space of twelve months you can go from
from such a massive low to such a massive high.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
So how much what makes a good high jumper?

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I mean all sorts. Just you've got to be a
bloody good bloke. Firstly, that's more importantly, but no, it's
it's all about speed and power. It's all about, you know,
how can you be the fastest, most powerful person but
also not be the heaviest. It's it's obviously not as
easy as just trying to get as strong as possible
and then and then once you're out there, it's all

(02:30):
about the mental game. I mean, most people at home,
if they watched, they saw that. You know, it wasn't
always easy. There was definitely some tense moments, but you know,
it's all about how you ride those and just get
the best result.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Well, it certainly was a tense moment because you were
tied with the American and you could easily have both decided, hey,
we'll just share the gold. What made you say, like,
we're going to go for the jump off?

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Like I think, I think that's most exciting for the sport, right,
Like I think that you know, obviously the middle did
get shared in Tokyo, and I think that that was very,
very cool. You know, it's said an amazing precedent in
terms of what sport can do and how it can
bring people together. But I think at the same time,
everyone knew it was never gonna happen again. If we
were ever in that situation, it was it was always

(03:12):
going to be a case of let's actually jump and
give the fans what they wanted and make that whole
stadium feel something. And that's what we did.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
And what was it like in the State de France
when you were you know, you knew this is it here, I.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Go, ah, look, it was amazing. It was It's like
something else. You know, we compete in in stadiums of
sort of thirty to forty thousand people, you know, relatively regularly,
but to sort of have a seventy eighty thousand seat
stadium was just something else. So yeah, it definitely took
me a while to get used to that levelin noise,
but once I did, it was amazing.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
In terms now of your life and day to dayre
getting sponsorship, if you found your phone sort of going
off a bit more with opportunities.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, a little bit more still would be nice to
have a couple more messages come through, so if you
know anyone, let me know. But it's yeah, it has
actually been it's been hectic. I only got back in
the country about ten days ago and I sort of
sort of quietly snuck my way in and now people
are sort of starting to realize I'm here. It's starting
to get quite busy.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
So what goals do you have now, hey, Mish, I mean,
do you have another height that you want to reach?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Well, first and foremost, I want to bring my handicap down.
You know, golf seasons, so got to get back into that.
But no, I think I think from the athletics perspective.
You know, I'm taking a little bit of time off training,
which is relatively well deserved, and I will start again
in November, and once we kind of do our full
team review, the next goals will be set. But you know,
it's still an action packed eighteen months for us. We've

(04:35):
got World Indoors and World Outdoors next year, and then
you know, even more stuff in the next four years.
So it's definitely going to be busy and there's going
to be a lot to do.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
And I imagine around the schools of New Zealand. The
aims games are on and the entire rung are at
the moment, and secondary school sports and so on. As
it done wonders for high jumping and lots of kids
wanted to get out there and high jump.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Now yeah, I mean hopefully, but at the same time
it's you know, I just hope that kids get out
and do any sport they want. That's that's the thing
for me as I loved doing sport when I was
a kid and it wasn't just high jump. It was
it was rugby, and it was football and it was running.
And I think that you know, if anyone can go
out there and realize that doesn't matter what sport it is,
we're kiwis, we can we can get amongst it and
we can actually be one of the best in the world.

(05:16):
You know, the opportunities are there and just get you know,
just enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Well Hamish again, congratulations gold medal winner from Paris Olympics
and thank you for dropping by to say hi.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Amazing k thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
On absolute pleasure. Hamous shirt curve gold midal winner for
