Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sunday Session podcast with Francesca Rudgin
from News Talks EDB and it.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Is time to talk travel and joining me now is
Meghan Singleton.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Good morning, Good morning from the back of a taxi
actually in New York City, and I hope it doesn't
get too noisy and bep, but you know what they
like in New York anyway about New York too.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Right, but we're going to talk about Boston, right, Yes.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
So I've just had a week there and I've never
been before, so it was it was a surprise and
a delight to me. So I thought i'd give you
the heads up on a sneak preview of what I'm
writing up at the moment for a blog post on
your first times visit to Boston.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Okay, brilliant. First of all, where do you stay?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
So there are several suburbs in Boston, and we stayed
in two of them, which I always think is quite
a good idea.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
I've done that in Vegas before, I've.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Done it in New York before, and it does mean
you get to see different parts of the city. So
we started off in leafy Beacon Hill, which is sort
of oldie worldy one hundred year old buildings, cobblestoned streets,
the bricks, the botanic gardens.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
The it's beautiful, the Cheers bar there.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
So that's the first thing we did was walk from
our hotel, which was in a former prison and is
now a luxury hotel, a great place to stay. Really
loved it. Did the Freedom Trail that starts there, which
walks you through literally walks you through the American Revolution
right through to the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre.
(01:40):
So really photogenaic. The autumn leaves are all out this week.
People have got their fall pumpkins on their doorsteps, and
you know, fancy pants apartments.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
It's really beautiful in that part of town.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
And then we moved to Seaport, which is a new
and up and coming full of glass skyscrapers, and only
about a decade ago it was just fishing boats and
car parks.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
So that was a real eye opener to me.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
And one of the best things to see in order
to get a good sense of the city.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Well did we did a duck boat city tour.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I don't know if you've ever been in a city
where they have these amphibian vehicles, and they were so
they based on the World War II vehicles that could
drive on the land and then go into the water.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
And off they would zoom.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
So we did one of these and the host was
actually hilarious. He's actually a full time comedian. That's a
great way to get your bearing. So you drive down
the city and you're sort of seeing where Danny Crane
would walk out of his office in Boston Legal and
you're doing all of that as well as Paul Rivera
and passing his bits and pieces, and then off you
go into the barbor and.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Have a bit of a zoom around. And so that
was a good idea. Yeah, it was great. It was good.
The clam charter.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
You've got to have clam charter and lobster rolls. Why
I did shopping, got myself all the terroristy things.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Did get a Boston sweatshirt. Had to do that.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Walked the Freedom Trail, which you can actually do with
a guide tour or you can follow a bit like
walking from Auckland domestic to international. You can actually follow
a three point two kilometer brick pathway right around Boston
and it takes you to the highlights.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Of all.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Situation sort of ending up at the Boston Tea party.
So that's a really you can do that for free,
or you can do the guided tour.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
So how many days do you think you need there
if you were visiting for the first time, Oh, I.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Have to go back.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
We did five. I could easily have done seven. I
could do two weeks. We went to Harvard. I thought
it was just going to be like, you know, a
building in a lovely campus. It's massive, it's fast. I
think it's like Auckland University. You know, it's spread out
for miles, so you could actually go into some of
the buildings there and the museums and things there, which
we didn't have fine for but you know, there's just
(03:58):
so much more to see.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
So I'm going to be Peeback of layers in a post.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Next And we thought we almost got there, but no,
we have lost Meghan from the back of a cab
in New York. And something tells me we'll be talking
about New York next week. So Meghan's going to get
a blog up at her website, bloger at lunch dot
com all about Boston. If you were thinking of heading
there at some point in the near future.
