The global 'right-to-repair' movement is gaining momentum.
As part of a sweeping executive order targeting tech companies, US President Joe Biden has also endorsed the principle known as 'right-to-repair', calling for Federal Trade Commission rules that ban technology manufacturers from suing independent repair shops or hindering consumers from trying to repair their own devices.
The movement this week also received backing from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and the New Zealand government is said to be investigating rules as well.
Consumer NZ Head of Testing Paul Smith told Francesca Rudkin the noise about the right to repair from consumers is starting to rise.
"People are getting tired. We are buying products, and then being told that we can't do what we like with them, and that's pretty much what everyone wants to do.
"We just want the ability to say 'I want to get this repaired', and there are things being put in place that are stopping that happening."
