Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks dB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
YEP betting the Warritas fifty seven twelve to move into
Super Rugby's top six for the first time this season.
Hurricanes assistant coach Bryn Evans is with us bruin First
of all, in general terms, how big a result was
this in terms of the Hurricane season.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah, I mean it's obviously good to see the boys,
you know, get out there and throw the ball round
a bit, I suppose, and just see the smiles on
the faces on a few of the Moose coming off.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
After a slightly inconsistent start to twenty twenty five, did
it feel like a performance like this was coming.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, I think, you know, especially the week before the
buye really grinding out a win against the Honders, bought
some good cohesion amongst the group, and boys went away
recharged over the bi working, came back, really keen to
crack on and you know, put the X to the

(01:12):
grind and work on a few things that maybe we've
been lacking on this other season.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
What sort of things have been that we were the
main focus heading into last night. What were some of
the things that you were quite keen to see even
small improvements in.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, I think especially when we looked at our defense,
it was it was getting off the line, you know,
not waiting for the opposition to come to us more
us go to them and dictate on our terms, put
pressure on their ballplayers, and just being switched on on

(01:48):
both sides of the ball so we could be up
as that one line.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
I haven't seen the stats, but just on the defense,
you must have been happy because well from my memory
of watching the game last night, the Hurricane's defense was excellent.
I can't remember too many mistackles, too many line breaks
from the wartas.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
Were you happy with the defensive performance.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, I think obviously they're a good side, and rolling
off the back of what they had done last week,
they came out and started really strong, and so that's
you know, flick the boys into gear pretty quickly. And
I think bar that first you know, five ten minutes
where they got a few points, I think the boys
really showed what they can do when they do do

(02:28):
the things that they they've been working on during the week.
So that was really pleasing to see.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
So thirty five minutes gone, you're only ten seven ahead.
Did it feel like it was going to be a
bit of an armor whistle, a bit like the Highlanders game.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
At that point, it felt like we were creating a
lot of opportunities. It felt like we were playing within ourselves,
I think for the most part, and I think we
were playing in the right ears of the field. It
was just you know, that last pass or a little
bit of a miscommunication or you know, something that didn't

(03:02):
quite go away. And then that year that lasts two
or three minutes before halftime. You know, we managed to
put a lot of good phases stacking on top of
each other, and I think a suffer scored a try
and then you know from a kick that that bounced
from the kickoff, you know, the boys just bouncing on

(03:23):
loose Bourne and then from there, you know, that's where
the boys really come alive and played with the Hurricanes
rugby and that was great to see a few passes
sticking and going the link like that.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Surely got to give a rap to Isaiah Walker Leowerti.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
For his run and later in the first half to
set up came royguards try.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, one hundred percent, mate, and I think Isaiah, you know,
potentially hit one of his better games. In one of
his best games in a Hurricane Jersey last night. He
was everywhere, you know, he was, he was playing right
on the line and just he was in everything. So
it was it was really awesome to see. You know,

(04:00):
he's he's had a few issues with his discipline over
the start of the season, and I think he's he's
really gone away and he's worked really hard on those
things what he can and can't do, and I think
we saw really a great version of him last night.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
Yeah, and they couldn't agree more.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
They scored a trioly in the second but then thirty
three unanswered points from the Hurricanes. You must have enjoyed
the last half hour or so of that game.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah, Yeah, it was. It was great, great to see,
great to see if you guys come off the bench
and take their opportunities. You know, it's I think, you know,
from the start of the season that we have had,
we've had the opportunity for some guys that don't generally
play a lot of rugby or you know, consist of rugby,
that actually get some real, some real valuable minutes under

(04:48):
their belts in terms of Super rugby, so in terms
of a squad We're really building some experience here, which
is great, and those guys are actually now starting to
kind of figure out how to go about their business,
and I think it's just going to make the team
stronger going forward.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Set Peace one of your one of your key responsibilities.
Nine out of ten of your own lineouts one you
won four of theirs. You'd be pretty happy with those numbers.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yeah, yeah, you know, we we pride ourselves in our
set piece. You know, we were kind of we're on
the wrong side of maybe a real and not straight
which was tough. But you know, the boys trained hard
over the weekend. I think, you know, in terms of
trying to stop a team up the Warrior Tis, you
have to attack them at source and they've got some

(05:37):
great ball runners and they've got some strong forwards. So
we really plan to go after them at sit Peace.
So if we could disrupt them in the first phase
like that, then that was going to make our jobs
a lot easier. So as pleasing to see the boys
get set first and really sort of attack what was
in front of them.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Now, does Reuben Love practice throwing thirty meter behind the
back flip passes?

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Room and Love practices a lot of things, and he
practiced with him very well. I haven't seen him do that.
One might be one of those sessions that I might
have ducked into to review training, so potentially, but you know,
he's the sort of guy that can can pull those
things off. And it looks like it comes as easy

(06:27):
as it did to him last night. So you know,
he's a talented player and it's it's great to have
him back planning some some Hurricanes rugby.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, pretty special stuff to set that that try up
at the end, and another really solid performance from Duplessif
you've been in and around him for a little while now, Brinn,
are you seeing some some.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Growth as we all are, in the way he plays
the game.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, one hundred percent. You know, he's he's coming to
He's he's a big he's a big part of the team.
You know, he's he's a he's a leader. He's been
given that leadership, one of those leadership responsibilities this year,
and I think that's something he's been craving and he's

(07:09):
he's just taken everything in his stride. You know, here
the boys will will listen to him and I'll follow him,
and I think that's that's the best thing is to
kind of go, You'll get them behind and he'll lead
the way. So it's it's coming through on what he
does on the field obviously, and and and off the
field as well. And I think he's he's taken that

(07:30):
opportunity and I think you know he's he's the sort
of guy that's gonna that's going to do everything he
can for this team. And that's what you're want with
one of your leaders.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Absolutely, And just to finish the Blues up next a
week tonight up at Eden Park. They're a bit of
a wounded beast at the moment. They've got the buy
this weekend to get their own refreshment in. How are
you going to prepare for the challenge of the Blues
at Eton Park next week?

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, I think you know, the boys would have would
have been happy with with the result last night, but
then you know, as soon as that that was done,
there'll be one eye on the week ahead. And you
know there's a we narrow now we lost at home
to them, you know, a few weeks back, so that'll

(08:13):
be not too not too far in the distant memory
of the boys, and I think it should be a
really good game, you know, we're we're going to be
preparing really well. But as you say, there'll be there'll
be an air of desperation about the Blues and I
think it's it's going to be one of the it's

(08:34):
going to be a real scrap so you will be
looking forward to that.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, So all we excellent stuff. Bring congratulations on the
win last night.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Thanks for the chat. Today, go and enjoy what looks
to be a pretty nice Wellington day.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Okayn't beat it mate?

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Thanks Fini, No, thank you, brit Brnevan's their assistant coach
of the Hurricanes after their good win yesterday fifty seven
points to twelve, so that does take them up to
sixth on the table on points differential. Basically they had
the same number of points as the Force but a
better points diff So after six games, Hurricanes on fourteen points.

(09:08):
Chiefs are top. I've got the weekend off. The Crusaders
can go top. Later on tonight, Gold Sport and iHeartRadio
will have coverage of the Crusaders against Mowana Pacifica.
