Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks B.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Hello, James, are you encumbered by any leadership responsibility we have?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
I just interrupted Hurricanes FM. What what's going on?

Speaker 1 (00:22):
You have?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Welcome aboard?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yeah, well, I know you've got first five issues. This
is all I know. But you've still got enough talent
to win the whole thing. So they get it right.
The biggest decision is duple ev versus being a larky.
That's who starts.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's big. I thought maybe you and Chief Country might
have given us Josh Jacob.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yeah, well that's the thing. He's been playing so well
in pre season. It looks like he might maybe get
the ten jersey to start with d Mek roaming out
the back.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Do you think you think that's what they might do?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Well? Shawn Stevenson's gone to Japan on a bit of
a sabetical slash. I'm going to end some more money
up here and let me that they are short to
fall back and there are you know Nadawa can play there.
None can play there. But maybe it's just easier if
Jacobs in such good form to let the Mac play

(01:18):
out the back.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
You got well yeah, yeah, yeah, but greedy. We're trying
to work out how to play there. You've got about
three up there.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
The greediest team are the Blues, but I meant the right.
They are the champions and now they've got Bowden back
with Harry Plummer, Stephen Peerfetter and Evan zhn Sullivan, so
so much to choose in the tens of the fifteen
area there.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Absolutely you want to get to Super rugby in a bit,
but let's start chronologically, or this isn't actually chronological, but
it's something has already happened. It's the black Caps last
night in a fifty over game three hundred and thirty
for six against Pakistan. Glenn Phillips one oh six of
seventy four balls and then your bowl Pakistan out for
two fifty two. That's a pretty good day's work, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
It really is mean they're in Lahore, they're pretty much
that the local side is expecting to win. But I
think I've said this to you before party. I think
the fifty over game is our best discipline, best format
for this New Zealand side. Even when you see the
team names, you just can't find a weakness from the

(02:26):
start to the top to the bottom there so to
bat You know, with the batting you had Darl Mitchell
with his eighty one can at another another fifty. But
Glenn Phillips the one oh six not out just shows
he is a really an outstanding white ball cricketer. And
then you've got oh, Mitch Santner and Matt Henry for

(02:48):
three wickets apiece. It's pretty good going. And when you
wonder about the Pakistani team, well, Shahana Freedi was bowling
the big tall guy with the perfect hair and he
got smashed for about eighty runs off his ten eighty
eight off his ten overs. And then don't take me
to the Book and Standards authority, but fuck as a

(03:08):
man scored eighty four.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
You know there will be no there'll be no complaints
proffered there. I know Mitchell Santon has just been given
the job of white ball captain, but if he were
to be injured or something, would you give Glen Phillips
a crack as captain of the white ball team.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, I think he would be a good option. I
mean it's one of those ones where at the moment
he's a nailed on selection, So yes, he is an
option to captain, but you just don't know who the
good tacticians are sometimes. I mean Kin Williamson, I mean
he won us a World Test Championship as captain, but

(03:48):
I sort of have it on pretty good authority that
you know, for a lot of his games he leant
heavily on the likes of Ross Taylor and Salve himself
was really a collective, so you know there will be
someone there who was always got Tom Latham as well,
you know, so he's clear leadership all the way through
and future captain Rach and Avender as well.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Speaking of right and you falls from the field in
this game, struck in the forehead attempting a catch. He
sustained a laceration to his forehead. He's otherwise, it was
treated otherwise okay, came through his HIA well and will
be continue to be monitored. So that's good news for
Rach and moving forward Super Bowl tomorrow. Are you going
to be parked up?

Speaker 3 (04:31):
We'll be parked up at kraig As Wild where we're
on here. So we're trying to think about who's going
to bring the hot dogs. It usually falls on me
to go and get me the Frankfurters and the Buns
and all that sort of stuff. So yes will be
packed up here thinking, well, who's it going to be?
Is going to be Chief's manner? Will it be the Eagles?

(04:53):
At the moment, they're very the Chiefs and narrow favorites,
but too tough to pick really. I'm just hoping that
there's going to be plenty of plenty of touchdowns. I
don't want to dour a fair It needs to be
something exciting, something that you know. There's obviously plenty of
Taylor Swift sightings as well to Kendrick Lamar at halftime,

(05:14):
but it's really tough to pick. If anything, I'd say
maybe the Eagles with their defense could could get the
job done.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
All right, we've got a bit of a Super Bowl
preview after two o'clock. But yeah, I think you can
even bet on anders and overs the number of times
Taylor Swift appears in the broadcast coverage.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Well, I'd rather bet on that than the actual result,
because right now I'm just thinking, oh, surely you know
Patrick Mahomes is going to get it done with Taylor's boyfriend,
you know, Trevis Kelcey. But in you go say Kwon
Barclay on the other side of the running backs for
the ages, he's you know, there's just there's a lot

(05:54):
to like. It's a santalizing proposition this game and looking
forward to the halftime meds for Key easiest to sort
of go on YouTube and watch those.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah, I'm sure they'll Yeah, they'll pop up pretty pretty quickly.
They will be able to watch those. Hey, staying in
the United States, I know it's sort of it not
old news, but it's happened a little while ago. Now
as the whole Luka Doncics trade to the LA Lakers,
do you have any reflections on this?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, I do. I think everyone thinks it's madness and
Luca Donches is an absolute superstar. He has trouble with
his fitness. I mean I can relate with his weight. Again,
definitely relate to Luca, but his skill is not in question,
so he is truly pretty much. I think ninety nine
percent of people said this is madness as trade isn't

(06:40):
worth anything. But the one percent consisted included Charles Berkley,
the Great Charles Bikeleery. He said this isn't a bad deal.
Anthony Davis goes across to the other side the mono
brow you know, most famous mono brows of Freda Carlo,
the Mexican painter. So you know he is a proper

(07:00):
superstar himself and will make the Dallas Maverick's better in
the short term. But I was thinking that I was
trying to work out what would be the trade that
would would resemble this, and I was thinking, we've almost
We don't necessarily trade in New Zealand, but I think
Alex Pulson going to or CRUNDSB because a lot of drama.

(07:22):
Sorry if you and Bowden Barrett going to the Blues
was quite big as well.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Thanks for driving deep into the heart of Hurricanes c FM,
but TV.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Right right at right now.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
But what those things did, though James was was create talk,
right And that's what this, this this trade in the
NBA has shown us. There's that the off court narratives
can really blow up. Everybody was talking about about the
Don chicch trade, even though people who didn't really know
one end of a basketball court from another.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
It's a really good point because the NBA has been struggling.
NFL is bigger than ever. College football, American football is massive,
and the final for that was a ratings bonanza. So
the NBA sitt and needed something, and they're coming up
to the All Star weekend, which is always such a flop.
It's just a massive kind of like non contested a

(08:21):
game of social basketball. It's better watching the actual celebrity game,
where you know, you still to get some random rappers
they can ensure it or whatever, you know, like that's
actually worth watching. But then now this gives them what
they need, which is buzz, which is people thinking about
their game, saying it's a big deal, exactly what Adam Silver,

(08:42):
the commissioner of the NBA wants, just to finish.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Wales played Italy overnight and Italy won. If that was
a football game, we wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. It's
a rugby game. And actually I'm not sure we're raising
an eyebrow now that it's a rugby game. Wales are terrible.
Fourteen straight defeats.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Yeah, they're totally in rebuild mode. I feel sorry for
Warren Gatlin, but it doesn't look good at a CV
because is he I think he went a eleven games straight.
I'm losing with the Chiefs and now he's got is
this fourteen or is it yeah at fourteen. Yeah, so,
and I mean it is tough because I actually think
Italy are really good. They've got recently, you've got this

(09:23):
Argentinian coach. His name escapes me. I've met the guy
as well. You'll think of him while I'm while I'm speaking,
But anyway, he is Italy. Last year they beat Wales,
they beat Scotland, and they grew with France and lost
to England by three points. So they know sobout these days,
the Italians. But yeah, it just doesn't look good for Gats.

(09:44):
And I can't see when happening. I can't see too
many Welsh players being in the in the British and
Irish Lions this year. It's a really it's a tough
one for Gats and look that they might be knocking
on his door saying enough is enough. But it doesn't
mean he's a bad coach. It's just he's been caught
with circumstances where a golden generation retires on and this

(10:07):
is what happens.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Yeah, I think the Argentinian player now Italian rugby coach
whose name escapes you as Gonzalo Carsaded, Is that him, Yeah, Cassa.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Gonz Yeah, my deepest apologies lociento, which is Spanish because
he speaks Spanish, even though he probably speaks Italian as well.
But yeah, I mean this is all stuff for any
trying to add you to Hurricanes FM here, but you
look out for those chiefs though. Yeah, still strong, all right.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Well, Claik McMillan's leading us off after two, so I'll
check him with him about who he's got in store
to replace Wallace. Enjoy Super Bowl, James. Let's catch up
again next Sunday.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Love to thanks Piney, cheers mate.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
