Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks, EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
News Talks, HEB and Weekend Sports seventeen away from two.
When I wrote down at the start of the week
the list of media who I thought would be in Vegas,
James mcconey was at the top of the list. This
is catastrophic. How have you not been sent to Vegas?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yeah, exactly. I don't know. Maybe they think of me
as a flight risk. You know, it's like McCarney, Vegas.
As it worth it? Is it worth the headlines? Will
we ever come back? Will it be like the Hangover?
Will he suddenly end up with a baby on a
front pack and a tiger in his room? Chances are yes.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well, I had a chat to Mike Lane an hour
or so ago, and he's got me to call his
wife to let her know that he may not be
coming back.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
That's no surprise. I mean Mike Lane. I mean that
I would have been part of that Mike Lane acc
or Turns of Commentary collective party. I would have been
part of that, and that's that's a dangerous for starters.
So yeah, it's better to steer clear. I've got major fomo.
But at the moment I'm just watching and the Warriors
of leading three soft tries, one was a length of
(01:20):
the field and to set as well, which was just
you know, repiand's right there. But hey, when you're in Vegas,
it's still good times even if they lose.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Right, Well, that's right, And I know you've probably turned
away for the television to give full focus to your
radio slot, which I greatly appreciate. But the Warriors have
just scored a try in the corner, so sixteen to four,
kick to come. They're on their way back.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
James, why is my I went back? I think to
look at it says it's low. How come you're ahead
of me? Pine? Are you so advanced? Great to hear?
Great to hear? But yeah, I'm watching on sky Sport
now and I just see that we're on the attack.
There's been some good position. I actually like Leka Halasima,
who's on the on the bench and as we just
(02:02):
see to try now, yes, nice try to scored by
Kirk caple has gone over. Yes, good stuff. Hey. Look
the way I feel about the wires is that they've
become such a you know, a big ticket item. Everyone
wants to everyone supports them. They've come out of the woodwork.
(02:23):
It's all been since COVID, really, and I know rugby
is panicking because the Warriors are so popular, the NRL
is growing, but I think it's actually quite good for rugby.
People like contact sport. That's a good thing and all
rugby needs to do is make sure that their product
is great, and that has been so far this year.
There's just been a couple of glitches and one of
(02:44):
them happened last night at the end of the Blues
Hurricanes game. Have you talked about that on your show?
Speaker 2 (02:49):
By now we actually had we had Paul Tito on
the radio about half an hour ago. What did you
make of it?
Speaker 3 (02:56):
All? Very confusing having a doctor pretty much decide who
gets to put the ball into the scrum. In the end,
dam knock looked in a bad way. So if he
didn't have an HIA, did you see his face was
something seriously wrong? Yep, So if he didn't have an HIA,
(03:17):
they couldn't know trying to find footage of where he
got hit, where he got knocked, and I just thought, think, wow,
that's quite a big call to make on the day
and forcing Boden Barrett to put the ball into the scrum. Look,
I know you're a Hurricanes fan, but I think it's
probably helps just to see the Blues get across the
line at least once, and and I think we'll be
(03:40):
hearing more about the influence of doctors on games now.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Indeed, because I thought they and I can't remember, I
thought it was the mouthguard that gave you the that
gave you the indication that somebody had been hit hard
enough or their or their head had moved enough that
it was that it reached an HIA threshold. But you're right,
I think they were looking. I think they were on
skygo rewiping back to try and find what happened.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Well, you can still get a hit in the back
of the head, can't you, And with your mouth open sometimes,
you know what I mean, Like the furthest part away
from the mouthguard. I just looked at Sam Knox's face
and I think, well, he's whatever he's got. He's not faking.
He's not going back out there either. So yeah, it's
an interesting rule. But look, to be honest, both those
(04:27):
teams are spluttering along. The Hurricanes definitely aren't the same
threat they were last year. I'm trying to work out
here the miss more is it Jordy Barrett or is
it Reuben Love? But there's pretty much both really.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah, it's like there and yeah, a couple of other
positions as well. I think Harry Godfrey's a very promising player.
It's got a lot of points last night, including a
nice try, but yeah, it's he's stillwly and his tenure there. Hey,
can we talk about your chiefs? Are they beat the Blues?
They beat the Crusaders yesterday afternoon they almost raised their
bed again beating the Brumbies forty nine thirty four. Should
(05:01):
we just give you guys the trophy?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Now? Oh, I'd love that tapen pony. I would actually
preferred to one a couple of years ago when Razor
breakdanced on Waikato Stadium. There that would have That was
the one that we really needed two years on. Yeah,
that's great. I think we're looking in good shape. But
now Damien McKenzie's injury. Have you had a doctor on
(05:25):
the show here? Said today? Finally, because he's been really
the standout player in Super rugby so far this season,
him and Tamulty Taveta Naa, I have been two unbelievable
standouts and McKensy getting that knee injury that's pretty bad.
But at least Josh Jacob in there at ten looks
the goods and you know, there's a little bit of depth,
(05:45):
and thank goodness for Manassa. Ma'sa ellie. He's been around forever,
but he's only twenty eight and he slotted in on
the wing there. So yeah, we wait and see about Dmac,
but I think things are looking great. And speaking of
missing Jordie well, Quincy Pyre at twelve looks like you
could slot in to the all Blacks right now. He's
looking in such good.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah he was. He was a standout, wasn't he. Quint
to pie, he looked, he look awesome. I think I
saw Dmax signing autographs afterwards. I know that's not an
indication of whether your knees are okay or not, but
I get the feeling if it was serious, he might
have gone in an under and gone to hospital or
whatever it was. I got treatment, so I you know,
that could be a good sign that it might not
be quite as bad as first feared.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yes, exactly, that is that is a good sign. And look,
I think it's it sounds like they're not worried about Mackenzie.
So you know that's that's the latest that just came
through on the email. I don't know if you heard
that little thing, but yeah, so that's that's a good sign.
Look that the other thing with Super Rugby really is
(06:48):
quite a pacificat looking so good I think against the
Highlanders and Ladie just lifting his game at battle with
Taveta and Mali was so intriguing and it's almost like
you took it personal, like Michael Jordan from there from
their document, you know, the last start, Yes, and he was,
(07:10):
but I thought there was one thing there that One
thing I must note about Super Rugby is the high
tackle rulings are in absolute shambles at the moment. So
Cam Miller went high in a head clash. I know
it was his first interaction of the game when he
came on. Now that would normally be a card, but
because he got so badly hurt, it's almost they gave
him a pass. We've seen a part of our red
(07:32):
card for that against Ireland when he had a head
clash accidental head clash with Gary Ringrose, he sort of
came to and was given the show in a red card,
but no card for Miller on Friday night. I think
that really does impact the game a lot. So if
they're serious about these head clashes, the same thing happened
in week two with Hunter Paisami for the reds on
(07:54):
Muana again, So they're on the rough end of the
stick right now. They've got to get that right. I
think it's pretty simple.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
But they're failing just before you go and know you
wouldn't have had the chance to watch it, probably watching
the Chief Surround about the same time. But we had
a four all draw in the A League. Yes today,
incredible go media.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
I mean, that's it's craz I mean, you're living in
the wrong city now, Pinety. I know that you're looking
at property and awkn that's what people are saying, and
it's I feel really need jet reaction from yourself to
be starting to scout around one tree, hell for some
couple a nice little bed set or even you know,
could you push out to a townhouse there. I mean,
(08:34):
the thing is that that that game, that rivalry is
really important. I know, like you said in your commentary,
it sucked the energy out of the stadium, but it
might be necessary. You don't want your fairy tale ending
mid season. You want your fairytail ending to be lifting
the toilet seat, which is the trophy for the A League, right, yep,
(08:54):
the toilet seat. So winning that game, yes, it would
have been a wonderful moment for the fans, but having
them sort of give them that wake up call, it
will change everything about the way they handle it that game.
Two penalties conceded that soft goal at the end. I
think it Pinaker tried to bolly it away when he
could have just got a hit on it, right, And
(09:16):
so now they look at that review and be tougher
on themselves. I think it's for the best. Piney, I agree.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I agree. I was hoping I could just sort of
doss down at your place, but if I have to
buy property, then you know I have to buy property.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
You're always welcome, mate, coming.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
