Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport Podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks B Sunday afternoons.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We get the pleasure of the company of James mcconey,
crag Goes Wild, alternative commentary, Collective, various other media platforms
and other things too that you know don't need to
be discussed here. Hello James, Hi, how.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Are you pony? Yeah, it's good to be here. Plenty
of platforms, mate, it's what you need. Absolutely my way
reinforced ones.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Well, I always say they can't all fire you at once.
So if you if you have plenty of plenty of
income streams. I think it's good. Hey, the Warriors are.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Back, our back baby, and I gave them no chance
of betting Manly. But this is the whole thing with
those teams that seems stacked. But then you look at
Manly and there's you know, Tom Javoievitch has always been
in jury prone daily Cherry Evans, I think might be
the oldest player in the NRL. You know, sometimes it's
about being healthy and and methodical, and I thought exactly

(01:05):
that's what the Warriors were on Friday night. They didn't
you know, they didn't get scared. They didn't freak out
after that early manly try. Just bit by bit they
put together nice moves and and I thought, for Webbe,
the carrige ander Webster, he must have been so stoked
because he's he's got a plan and they absolutely stuck

(01:28):
to it. And we're a team, let's be honest, that
is lacking the big stars. So on paper we should
not have won that game.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
I must say, you said they didn't freak out after
conceding the first try. I must say I was a
little bit concerned. After they considered that first try. I
wondered what was going to get, what was going to happen.
I actually feared for us a little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, well, that's the thing I think when you look
at the Warriors team. Even I still don't believe Rogers
Uvasishik should play on the wing. But look, we've got
to trust him. We'll we trust in the process because
you know what's what happened there is Ali lad Taua
had a good game. We saw were even our has

(02:09):
started to combine really nicely. We needed to see that
because to me, the X factor comes from someone like
letter Halasima off the bench, and I've popped on about
him for a while, But he's a guy who could
be a superstar. How we manage him is important. But
also we can't let him go like Eli Kator to
the storm. So the process of getting him to that

(02:31):
next level is vital. But I mean, I'm always a
believer that someone like Rogers Tvasis she should be a
bit like the way Larry Day moved closer to the
ball as his career went on and should almost be
a standoff by now. But hey, as long as we
winning games have come out on the wing, let's just
keep it that way.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Absolutely. Now the rooster is a next they beat the Panthers,
they beat Penrith James, I know.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
And the thing is, I was looking at this as
a player there Alfahu White who played for Kelston Boyce
Hi for fifteen rugby and just you know, sometimes just
go where's that guy from it? And you go, I
remember seeing him somewhere and yeah, just down the road
here from my house in west Auckland. So seeing this
is the thing. There's a lot of players who are

(03:18):
starting to mature and turn into really solid pros, and
watching them, I guess boss the Pedris side around there
was a bit of a comeback here, and it came
down to the last seconds. But really they looked solid
after a terrible start. So this is what you want

(03:38):
from the competition, really, is that anybody can bid anybody,
because Super Rugby is doing that for sure, and I
mean I think Super Rugby has probably been even more entertaining.
But the n I was getting into its work, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (03:52):
And dat it is? And that its well, it's got
to Rugby. Nice seguey because the Chiefs are top, but
from the second place Crusaders down to the bottom place
to Morena Pacifica. There's only eight points between those ten teams.
And it's exactly what you just said. Anyone can beat anybody,
true jeopardy and some cracking games of rugby.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, I mean there's no natural alpha, you know. That's
what I quite like about it. So it is like
the end of that scene in Jurassic World where they
had that sort of like the one that the dinosaur
cooked up in the lab versus t Rex. I don't
know if I'm going too far from your wheelhouse of
movies here, Poney, but we saw that with the Blues
and the Chiefs last night. I know, Minty on your

(04:34):
show was oh, by the way, have you seen Jurassic World?

Speaker 2 (04:37):
I know I haven't, but I feel like I have
now that you've explained the ending.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yes, yes, yeah, great battle between those two. But I
mean Minty is the chiefs man and God bless him,
but he's definitely the glass artful Chiefs version. I'm the
glass harp empty guy at the moment, because you know,
it was just a conversion shaving the upright the cost
that cost. The Blues are really solid victory against the

(05:01):
odds last night, and yeah, the Chiefs have got a
few things they need to go away and work on.
I think it's good to see two strong hookers out
there with Brady McAllister coming into the fray and then
the one two punch with him and SUMMERSONI Tokyaho, but
really I think they got lucky. And when I looked
at Zavi Taly and then Cam Christie, pretty much two

(05:25):
guys on debut looking so good for the Blues. They
are the future. And Talley has been touted quite a
bit under twenties captain, I think, and you know he's
been everyone talks about them. But Cam Christie out of
Audioway College, I mean, I thought there were only rest
homes in Audioway, but yet there is a college there
and senior kids to just normal state schools. Because it

(05:48):
doesn't they can still rise to the top.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Pony, You're so right about the kick because that slightly
to the left. Then we're having a different conversation as
we are of Sam Gilbert's drop goal at the end
of the game on Friday night is slightly more to
the right. You know, they are very small margins between
defeat and victory and Super Regular this year, which again

(06:11):
is what we're after. But yeah, it's funny how small
margins can can have such huge impacts.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Just one thing. On the end of that Highlanders game,
there was a high tackle by Peter among the Jensen
and I was thinking, okay, did the rest missed that?
And they said it's not yellow cart threshold, But that's
still really a high tackle that I think a TMO
should rule on, And there seems to be a few
of those discrepancies. Rugby is absolutely riddled with it at
the moment because there was a kind of potential headbut

(06:39):
by this French hook in Malvaca this morning in the
Six Nations, and that was I thought it was going
to be upgraded to red and stayed yellow. So who
knows what the hell's going on upstairs? Because I mean,
are they like me? They just like triple screening and
looking on Instagram while they're watching the game because potentially
they might be Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
So they don't have their full focus where they should have.
In other words, yeah on.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
The twisties like myself or whatever, you know, like chips
and dirt and so TMO is just focus people. We
need to actually need you to contribute.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Do you ever when you're watching Sky do you have
a pause it and then you know, to do whatever
and then and then start it again and then forget
that you're actually about a couple of minutes behind, even
when you go through halftime all the time.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
And then I get annoying text from the Crowdo's wild
group chat and I just go, okay, right, that's some
I'm miles behind here. And even the Tryback, which is
a really good app for people out there if you
love your sport, tried as a New Zealand act that's
got all your favorite sporting sporting teams. But they'll give
me an a lit and I'll find out, oh okay,
you know or can you see you've scored? And it's

(07:43):
like I'm watching the game and it's there.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
You're still watching the You're still watching the pre game,
still watching the pre game. Hey, Liam Lawson's going to
going to take to the track at Albert Park this afternoon.
In about three hours or so, he'll be out there.
It's going to rain. What what are you expecting from
Liam Lawson this afternoon.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Well, apparently he's good in the wet I've heard, so
that's that's great. I mean, he grew up and book Kobe.
Everyone loves the Book of Kelly Bogan. Whether it's the
late great Possum Born, you know, everybody's sort of every
great driver has really cut their teeth there. But he
is actually from there, from humble beginnings, which is really
hard to do in Formula one. You know, it does

(08:27):
look like a rich kid with his blonde here who
looks like Draco Malfoy out of Harry Potter. Do you
know that reference? Pony? No?

Speaker 2 (08:33):
But again I'm learning all the time.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Okay, but this is the thing. Here's his car. Sounds
like my car. It's got major problems. It barely passes
the War on of Fitness I've had huge issues. When
I got war on the fitness the other day for
my car, it was almost second happiest day after my
daughter's birth, you know, like it was that big of
a deal. This car is so crap. But seeing him

(08:59):
get the probably the worst, the lesser mechanics, the lesser engineers,
and him having engine problems while the staff and it's
just flying. It's just typical, isn't it. Really. Of course,
supposely you can overcome that and get a warrant.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
It's hope. So let's hope he passes it. They can
put a new sticker on his screen. It's not even
a sticker anymore. Is that you're sort of slotted into
its little into a little case, now, don't you. You
don't stick it on the screen anymore.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
There's still a sticker, there's still a ceremony, and it
lasts for a year. Piny, it's the greatest thing feeling
of relief you'll ever feel in your life. Go get one.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
I'll go and get one when when the need arises.
Thank you for joining us, look forward to many more.
