Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from Newstalks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
The Crusaders have moved to second on the Super Rugby
table with a fifty five thirty three win over the
Western Force in Christ. Here is yesterday, on another beautiful day,
they ran a nine christ to four. Winger Macha Springer
scored a record equalling five of those tries in Or Well.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Jordan, he'll put the years back. He gets it out
to Maccastragger and it's finds up to the Marco man
kicks through, bounce up all me interesting, goes over in
Or and lands in the lap of a Crusader who
falls over the line. It's Macchus Spragger again. Oh kinda
holds the pass for Jordan. He eventually sent to White
(00:53):
to Maccus Bragger and now the Cregger's got a hat trick. Jordan,
lovely Harborbridge pass Tomaccas Spragger dances down the touch on.
Oh Becca Stragger, that is his beast in the afternoon.
Can't three up Springer? Who wants five? He might get
a chancellor Macca Sprager. Oh wow, five of the best
(01:20):
for young Backus Springer.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
High excitement in the crowd and in the cold try
box too, brilliantly called by Nick Gully. There yesterday, Macca
Springer just the second man in Super Rugby history to
score five tries in the game. The other was the
late Sean wan Nui, who did so for the Chiefs
against the war A Tars back in two thousand and one.
Macca Springer is with us on weekends for congrats mate.
When was the last time you scored five tries in
(01:44):
one game? Was it back at school or something?
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Yeah, no, I've never scored five tries in the game,
so the first from me, that's pretty special.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
It's well something you've given the overnight tests. Now are
you woken up? I mean, how do you reflect on
on what played out yesterday, not just for you but
for the Crusaders as well.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
I still don't really think it's through. I don't think
it's really kicked in on you know, a few messages
coming in, but it's pretty special for me and obviously
Bick from the teams did a lot to help me
get those five pretty much took the credit to them.
But yeah, it's a tough game. Leading in thirty three points,
it's probably not ideal for a super team, so we
(02:26):
could feel the points, but we're going to be able
to defend it as well.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
A couple of year tries were on the end of
back line moves, but you also went hunting for work
as well. I want to talk about your kick and
chase in the moment, but the second try good evidence
of that you like sort of you know, popping up
in different places rather than just hanging out on the fringes.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Yeah. I think it's a bit of a work on
from my season last year. Just getting a bit more
involved in getting the hands on the ball. So you
watched the news game and see how much it gets
involved and you touched he gets took a little bit
out of there and just just wanted to get as
involved as much as I could. And I guess it
showed as well.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
And the fourth one that the kick and chase down
the left wing side, you must have enjoyed that. I
think you said afterwards a Tom Marshall trick from back
in Tasman.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, that's a Tom Marshall's special when he started coaching,
you told me. He actually told me that, so we'll
credit to him for that.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
What do you what sort of pictures are you seeing
when you you know, because you get it. I think
on about halfway, Uh you know what, what what is
going through your mind in the in the split second
that you have to make your decision about what.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
You do next. I think it's just where the defense is,
how fast they're coming up, and so I can get
to that outside and put on the foot, then we'll
take it. But it's a kind of trying to do
it at training, so it comes as an instinct.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
When he did to a game and you made on
the other wing, seev Reese, he got a hat trick
as well. Now just one short of the all time
Super Rugby try scoring record, he's got sixty four. Now
how much of a helpers has he been to you
as you developed your career.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Yeah, he's a special player. He's obviously got I'll beck
to have been a huge part of my career. Obviously
a few years with them, learn a lot a lot
from both of them, so you know, they are pretty
extraordinary players. And to be able to rub shoulders with
them every day, every week and even in the games
was awesome. So you have to take a lot from them,
(04:20):
but to keep picking their brains with a bit.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
More so, Yeah, as you say, see a recent Will Jordan,
it's not a bad bad couple of players to be
part of a back three with. Are you still able though?
Do you feel able to contribute your voice during the
back three conversations as a game is playing out.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Yeah, definitely. They're always asking questions what I'm saying, What
are saying? They're telling me feedback, and I'm giving them
a bit of feedback too, so I always feel comfortable
talk to them. It's a funny thing.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, there's some pretty stuff competition for the outside back
spots and the side even to get on the bench.
Do you feel like if you've given an opportunity you
really have to take it.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah. This season just definitely there. You know, she'd like
to be around this playing in our perform and he
runs healthy at the moment, so as soon as you
get the opportunity to play, you've got to take with
their hands. And yeah, it's good for the team obviously.
It's real healthy, actually pushed heart of each each game.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
So it'd be pretty hard to drop you out to
scoring five tries on him, I imagine, But I guess
it's just it's just one part of it. You guys
are only your head by what twenty points to eighteen
at halftime? Why don't you think you could quite shake
them off in the first half.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
I think a little bit of discipline probably didn't help
getting them in and are in the field and they
were just getting points from that. So we're just our
discipline in our own half, but probably just a little
bit of connection stuff as well wasn't really clicking until
that second half.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
And if we look back to last year after Round five,
last year the Crusaders were zero and five. Without wanting
to dwell on that at all, what other big differences
mac of this season?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I think I just I think the culture has obviously
grind last year. We've taken a lot out of the
season last year and you get to learn from that,
and you gotta learn quick. With the super rug bes every
teams is a threat now, so you come up to
each game and I think, yeah, you reflect on what
happened last year. I think it's a big, big improvement
(06:23):
with the boys.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Certainly, and beardy afternoon in christ Church, how much do
you enjoy playing with a bit of sun on your back?
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Oh it's beautiful? Any too hot for christ towards that thing? Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:34):
You're from Nelson. May you be used to, wouldn't you?
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Yeah, you've been Christians for a couple of months. You climatize, and.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
I mean, obviously that would have been nice. But the
new christ Church Stadium well and truly taking shape. You
you drive down, you know, down the middle of town
and you see it there rising up. Now have you
thought about what it might be like to play in
that brand new venue next year?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Yeah, definitely had thoughts about it. It would be pretty spec
once it's open to see it, and obviously hope to
play in it as well. So now pretty excited for
that to open up. And I think it'd be good
for the community and enter the team as well.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
And what happens when you score five tries? Did you
have to shout?
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Last nights going round there to shout? I think two
boys told me I was a bit greedy as well,
So it be fine when I come in on Monday.
I don't know what they will be, but I'll be paying.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Something, which I'm just trying to think about. Which try
you could be accused of being greedy? And maybe maybe
the last one, maybe the last one I don't.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Know, I think was will was inside me on that
when I did the cover down the sideline, so he
wasn't too happy after he gave me that first one
as well. So he sadly won one back.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Well did know? I think? Well he got the last one,
didn't he. So you get to if you get to
eight tries and Will Jordan hasn't got one, he probably
would get a bit grumpy on image. Good to see
him get one of the end though. He made hard
work at out one of the end though didn't he
was sort of crawling on his hands and knees to
get over.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Yeah, we did have a laugh afterwards. Found it look
like he found a bit tough to stand up find
the way to get there he does.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
It was most Unwill Jordan like, but he did get
his try, Amca. Was terrific to watch last you know,
watch yesterday you know the outside backs running with such
freedom and scoring tries. Mate, Well done, big big week
this week. As as you look forward to the Blues
of Eaton Park this coming Saturday, you'll know how to
get back on the tools on Monday.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Yeah, definitely back to the new week. Was he blues?
Pretty bit of hate watching the game last nighting gets
a chase a pretty tight game, so they'll be rearing
to go.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Congrats again, Macca, thanks for taking the time for a
chat mate, No, thank you very much, thanks Maca Maca
Springer there scorer or five tries yesterday. That's a but
rough being told he was greedy. I it's the fifth try. Yeah,
perhaps he could have passed it.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Will Jordan gave him the first one, didn't he. If
you've seen these tries, there's a line up out to
the left and Will Jordan probably could have gone on
himself at one more passcase Maca Spring of the try,
he probably thought, well, I'll give the young killer chance.
It was his first game of the season. Two Machis
Spring hasn't played up until yesterday. Five tries in one game.
(09:14):
Talk about seizing your opportunities. Ian Will Jordan right at
the end, just kidding. A try was kind of ankle tapped,
got up, went again, crawled towards the line, reach out, scored,
He almost scored his try and installments really in slow motion.
