Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Said, Bee, it's the.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Friday Sport kick off with the Glass Shop, servicing Wellington
for over forty.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Years, joining us for Friday Sport. This week it's all sports.
Breakfast hosts Adam Cooper, Good Morning, Coops, the Morning Neck
and news Talk said bes, Look, I don't know why
they put lead. Did you write that Coops lead? Rugby commentator?
(00:40):
You only rugby commentator? Elliott Smith Morning, Elliott well More.
Can I just have a bit of a crack at you?
I mean, I get up pretty early in the morning.
I heard you on early edition, which surprised the hell
out of me that you were out of bed, that.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Bed, but I was answering the phone.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Yeah, okay, Well you had a bit of a crack
about our weather.
Speaker 5 (01:00):
Oh it was quite nice for the first few days,
and it's quite nice now. Wow, it wasn't this morning
s bucketting down with rain at a certain point. Okay,
it's all right, it's all right now, and it's going
to be good for the rugby tomorrow, which is the
main thing that's right.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Rain in the forecast, how good.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
So just tell our listeners though, and we are very
very very friendly with Elliott, so I don't think we
are having a crack at and but he got up
when he was up the sporting he said, well, the
first two days were fantastic, but the last couple of
big days exactly what you'd expect to be when you
come to Wellington.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
And I went, hey, you're coming on our show later.
I'm going to have a crack.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
At that for that, because wellet is whether it gets
a hard go.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
It does, it does, but it's turned it on today
the rain's gone and happy days.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Okay, when let's talk about let's talk about rugby, not
Wellington's where the Bowden Barrett to number ten? Probably I'll
start with you, Elliott. I don't seen you our special
guest for today. I'm not taking away anything away from Corus,
but if there's ever any place for Boden Barrett to
come back into ten and to take over the goalkicking responsibility,
because that's quite a major thing as well.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
It's that Sky Stadium, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
That's right familiar stadium to them for it for a
number of seasons through Super Rugby, and I think they
would have liked to give him a chance at ten
before this part of the season, but it's tacking to
this point to have everything line up in terms of
player availability and results in various things. And now is
the time that they've pulled the trigger and gone right.
We need to see Bowden Barrett at ten to steer
(02:22):
this team around. Damian mckinn's I think remains first choice,
but there's some big matches coming up on that end
of year tour and they need to see where the
boat and Barrett is up to steering this team at
ten and just give him a bit of food for
thought as well. And combining with t J Petinaro as well,
I think is important with that nine and ten combination
that used to run around for the Hurricanes, it's familiar
for both of them. I think it's a good opportunity
(02:43):
to see what they're both capable of Tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Adam Cooper, I mean, the choice of TJ. Pernata is
almost like a rookie coach's farewell handshake, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
I mean, I love TJ.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
We all love him, but realistically he's not the number
one half back in New Zealand right now.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's a dead rubber he's playing at his home ground.
I mean it's a farewell, it isn't a fairwell.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
And I guess the privileged position of winning a game
in solidify the bladder loow carp and having that safe
in the trophy cabinet allows you to do that. And
I think, you know, at the same time it's Scott
Robertson doing a nice gesture for him.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
It's a good you know, pr for the All Blacks.
Speaker 6 (03:18):
They're fairwelling one of their legends on his home ground
and giving him, you know, the chance to actually be
cheered off the field. I know we talked yesterday Nick
about why not put him on the bench and have
a feature. But he'll get subbed off and he'll get
a huge rount of applause from the fans. We hope
after the performance lot.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Of the nine downs or eleven down we're twenty five
to go and he get subbed off, it won't be
quite the same Elliott, will it.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
I think people wi still be ready to acknowledge him.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
Yeah, I think to hopefully be some acknowledgment as they
change things go over. But so ideally for the All
Blacks there nine or ten up at that point in
time and not nine or ten down.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
To go to you never know after last week, do
you think with history? I want to also have a
not a definitely not a crack at you. But you're
a little bit hard on Coops because me and Keeps
are talking about the team on the show yesterday and
we were saying, where the hell's Billy proptor? Now you
your comment, I believe and I'm only hearing it second hand,
but I hear your cobbit was, oh, a couple of
(04:10):
Wellington guys having a bloody Wellington mot.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
I mean, Elli prop does the future he is.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
To be honest, I would have liked to see him
in this Test match. He was very good in his
only Test match and that seems like a long time
ago now. Figji and San Diego played some great rugby there.
I thought he was a great distributor in that position,
but we just haven't seen him since Rico Yuani he's
been there. I think if Jordi Barrett had been fit,
then maybe there was the opportunity that maybe Billy came
(04:38):
back in, but I think they would have been reluctant
to change out both players in the midfield, and then
that meant they needed some second five cover off the bench.
Billy can't play second five, so David have Ellie goes
on there. But I would love to see Billy prop
to get another crack. We're gonna have to wait to
probably the game against Japan and Yokohama in a few
weeks time to see him. But he is a player
that I believe will have a big future in the
(04:58):
All Blacks jersey. Unfortunately the cards hadn't falled his way
to have a go at sky Stadium tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Okay, Coops, I want to ask you because I didn't
know Lly Proctor couldn't play second five as he played
second five before. I mean I would have thought he
was a bit more versatile than can't play second I think.
Speaker 6 (05:12):
He's slotted in there once or twice. It's at a
super level MPC level. But you know, we know exactly
where where he's capable of and where he's played his
best rugby at. So that is that is the jersey
him the thirteen So and to be fair, it's great
to have an absolute specialist at center.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
I mean, you talk to the people that really know rugby,
they say that's really underrated position because it's going outside,
going inside, making a decision.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
And setting up tries. So it's a very very important position,
isn't it.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
It is, and equally important one of the biggest defensive
positions on the park as well, because if you get
around the center position all of a sudden, that creates
a lot of gaps on the park. We get you
only very very good in that. In terms of his
defensive reads, Billy Procter is as well, but very specialist
compared to a second five role.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Okay, do we need to talk about the voodoo at
sky Stadium? And I suppose you want to have a
crack about that too. You had a cuff cracks, Well,
we've only what what gave and seven that's got.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
I will guarantee you the all blacks to borrow. How's that?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
There?
Speaker 5 (06:08):
We go, let's record that and we'll keep it on
file Monday morning. If the fall gots horribly wrong, we'll
have to play it back. They should win tomorrow light
and they should win well, and that'll be the bearing
of the curse, let's hope.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:20):
No, they just I don't know. They've just found themselves
in spots of bother over the years, haven't they? A
couple of drawers both sixteen all you know, back to
back South Africa Wallabies and then you know Ireland two
years ago, Argentina a couple of months ago. It's some mean,
it's fascinating run of Test matches and it's almost I
think it's the venue. It's just where the Test has
fallen in particular moments in time. You know, Ian Foster
under pressure, you know, a few cold Weds before say
(06:43):
the twenty nineteen World Cup and another bits and pieces right.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
COVID and twenty twenty first game back. Yeah, it's just
been unfortunate and there hasn't been a lot of Test
matches played in Wellington with the FIFA World Cup and
COVID and various other things in the last couple of years.
You would hope though that they would bury it. You know,
it's now something that the All Blacks are talking about.
It's been front of mine for them this week. They've
tried to figure it out, the tweak some of their
build up over the last week while and on out
(07:06):
to the great facility out at n z CIS and
moved out there. So they're hoping that you know, you know,
getting through those rocks and tossing them all over will
turn into a good result come tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Okay, that's one more quick rugby thing that I want
to ask you about. Both about Liam Lawson too, but
let's talk about the Lions versus County Manica.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
I believe that's for the Jon alone with cup good night,
isn't it.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
It's a pretty big They really really called Wooden Trophy
number eleven in honor of Jonahlomus. So yeah, I think
it always motivates the Wellington team and of course the
County's team. I remember I'm helping with a prize giving
when it was dished out here on Wellington a couple
of years ago to do PLACDF and it certainly meant
a lot to the team then to play for one
of the legends of the name of one of the
legends of the sports. So yeah, Wellington, you know the
(07:48):
top of the table net they had a bit of
a scare against they have plenty, but got through in
Golden Point last week. I think forward Pack could do
with a little bit of extra grunts to really show
that they are going to be a proper contender come
to zop Force.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
So did going to be back for the finals still
to be confirmed.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
I think it'll be the playoffs at earliest return, so
obviously he'd be a major factor.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I think they really missed him during the the Ranfilly
Shield Challenge a couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
And years certainly did and he'll be big in that
title run as well. Great, you know, johnal On were
trophy magnificent. We should be doing more to honor players
like Jonah and rugby there should be you know, World
Rugby should be doing a lot more than it should be.
A Rugby World Cup best player at the tournament should
get the journal on the middle from my mind.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
So now I want to change text a little bit
because obviously the news has come out that Lean Lawson's
finally confirmed for the IF one drive this year's going
and getting a couple of weeks time and its straight away.
How does it make you feel? I mean does it
make you? I mean as excited as I am. Apart
from who he's replacing, my replacing my favorite driver.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
I think it's great for New Zealand, doesn't it. It's
one of those big events on the world stage. You know,
you can rattle off how many IF one drivers not
only currently on the grid, but all those big names
and some of the biggest names in world sport. So
to have a Kiwi on there at the moment is
absolutely spectacular. We know, Lean Lawson's been knocking on the
door for how long, any number of years now where
at felt like he's poised to get opportunity, had a
(09:08):
couple of races two years ago. For now to be
in that driver's seat as a permanent member of that team,
I think is outstanding And we shouldn't underestimate how big
it is for a kre We being on that grid.
Speaker 6 (09:19):
And noticed sport, you know, and he's classic example. You
really have to go out on a limb. You're so
isolated from a lot of you know people. You know,
it's an individual sport. You spend a lot of time
just you know, playing your graft and having to work
so damn hard. You need so many resources behind you.
And you know, he's been talked about with this position,
you know, for three four years. You know, he's just
(09:40):
been having to put so much time, so much effort,
and he's never given up. And to get to this
point at such a young age, early twenties, is pretty remarkable.
And to get this chance, so I think to the
world and especially his team the wider Red Bull sort
of syndicates recognize just that the work he's been willing
to put in.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
And I don't think anyone that saw Drive to Survive
wouldn't love Daniel Riccardo.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Oh personality, isn't he Absolutely and you can't help but
love him hisse you know, he's he's a rare Australian
that you can well.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
We think it's one of us on their world stage.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
It's pretty close. Yeah, yeah, thank you very much Elliott
for coming in. I know you're extremely busy man over
this week in Wellington, so to have you in our
studio we feel privileged and thank you. Have a great
call and joy Wellington and let's hope we catch up
for a beer after the game tomorrow night. I'm sure,
I'm sure the squad will be out what do they
call that squad that comes on at halftime, But the squad,
(10:33):
the bottom squad or the media squad will be out
after the game on Saturday night in Wellington.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Thank you, and thank you also to Adam.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Cooper who is our host of our all Sports breakfast
tomorrow and Elliott's will be the call of the game tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Who are you doing with Elliott? Who's he doing?
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Oh with Ross Bond.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Yeah, we've got to keep a bit of what was
least this one Wellingtonian and the team.
