Speaker 1 (00:07):

from News Talk sed B. It's the Friday Sport kick
off with the Glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Junius for Friday Sport this weekend is sports hosts Jason
Pine and sports broadcaster Matthew Buck. Morning guys, morning, good morning.
You'd like to be called Mett or Matthew.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Matt will do mother calls me Matthew.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
I know my mother calls me Nicholas. It's all right, Matthew,
I'll call you Matthew.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Alis NPC Final Wellington Versus may have plenty three oh
five at sky Stadium tomorrow Saturday. Piney, it's going to
be big. It's gonna be I can feel it. I mean,
I'm sorry, I got a bit emotional there even talking
about it. It's a Grand Final, Yeah it is.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Shall we give away some tickets to the game.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
You're the boss here, you know, when Coops is not here,
you're the boss.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
All right, Well, in that case, we do have some
tickets to give away, four tickets to the game, and
or signed Wellington Pride jerseys as well. So four jerseys,
four tickets. You must be able to call into our
Tory Street office before four point thirty to collect these.
And you just have to answer this question. The question
is Brad Shields, the Wellington number eight has played international
(01:22):
rugby nine times for who our numbers are eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty Ethan will take.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I know the answer to that?
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Well, I mean you're not eligible, isn't it that?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah? I know the answer.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, that surprises me. Bucket, you know the answer.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Oh, eight hundred eighty ten eighty. If you know the answer,
four tickets and four signed jerseys, the game is going
to be huge. I'm really looking forward to it. Buck
is going to be on the sideline that tomorrow is
part of our.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Rating a blow.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Well, well, I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
I don't wish ell on him.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I was joking. I was trying to have fun on
a Friday.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
God, just check the rain radar nick for tomorrow. This
is what I do all week when I'm doing the
sideline and nothing no rain in Wellington, probably up until
and then it starts really checking it down about.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Five pm tomorrow night. So so you think you'll get through,
So you are going to tell me. I want you
to ask you about the may of many Lions game.
But you're going to tell me you're such a sports
expert that you're going to tell me what hour it
starts raining. Come on, Bucky, I know you clear.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
No, that's good prep because he knows the game kicks
off at three. He thinks, Okay, well, do I need
to have a jacket? Yeah, the blue jacket, the iconic
blue jacket? Or can I go without it because or
do you take the risk it's not going to rain
till five?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
That's actually good prep.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I mean we don't want to we don't want to
get a wet weather game.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Doing all right?
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And yes, we don't want to talk about his big
blue puffy jacket we watch on TV every week either.
But let's let's talk rugby. So we know that any
team that's Richard Watt is the coach of is going
to come very well prepared and ready to make some noise.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Yeah, I mean what, he's a quality coach. He you know,
he's was always a very passionate guy, has always been
a very passionate guy.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
But has become a very good coach.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Now, Bucky, Yeah, here's a team also, Nick and Piney
that's on the been on a Tradictory upwards for probably
for the last seven eight nine years, because they've built
a great base in Tartan Mount Wan going to be
a great place to live, and they've attracted good players
and you're right with Richard Watt. Also the manager, Wayne
Briller is a legend of Wellington Club Rugby. He's been
the manager up there for Plenty for years, so he's
(03:21):
got a bit of sternness about him. But they'll bring
a team to town that nick you look at. It
hasn't been interrupted except for PALIASI Tossi with all blacks
coming in and out. So they've had a very very
strong squad for the season and they've shown that a
lot of Wellington boys coming back in a Torakoy the
kid of Broughton, and I expect them to put it
(03:42):
their best for Ford.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
I still think we'll win. I still think, yeah, I
think we'll win. Going away. You may Plenty are a
good team, of course they are, and you look at
guys like Akoy, Ecklund and those guys, but then you
look at at Wellington's team. You know two place has
made a massive impact coming back. Brad Shields is back
in the side. As we know Jackson Garden bashup crucially
back at first five.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
See, I'm not sure on that decision. So I'm not sure.
I thought the first five eight was brilliant last week,
and according to my sources, they've played club rugby all
year together. The first five and a half back? Is
that right?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
My right? That's correct? Okay?
Speaker 4 (04:15):
But but if you okay, I know we had to
say it before, but if you were sick and you
came back, we'd put you back on the air.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Depends he's on in front of me.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
The only thing Maka I was going to my point
was a hamstring and it was a good tear. He
did what only two weeks ago. Ham Strings are normally
twenty one days minimum. Now they're bringing them back after fourteen.
That's my concern. I think he's the player you put
in there. Of his foot, Oh, no question, the ham
strings the issue. Callum Hawkin's a good placement and he's
on the bench.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
So if Garden Bishop does tweak it in the first
five ten minutes, Callum Harken goes on and happy days.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
The hawk is the bigger worry.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
See, we've had this argument before and I'm going to
give it to you again. You stick with the incumbent
and bring the star on as as the other person.
That's what I think after a week, you know, and
I know you're going to say that that Garden Baship
is the incumbent. But last week they did so well
line kicking. That kid's line kicking was bloody and.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
He's a good kid, Kellim Harck and he is. Okay,
put it this way. Then if it wasn't injury, if
it was illness, okay, let's say he.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Had a tummy buge different story.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Okay, So it starts the hamstring that worries.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
You, and it worries me because you know, I really
like Mesship, I really do. I think he's a very,
very quality player. But he's not an athlete. You know,
He's not the slim, trim fighting machine type guy. He's
that big, stocky.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
He's a genuine leader in that team though, I know.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
But a hamstring injury on a bigger guy, that's what
I'm saying. You know, I'm not putting having dispersement on
his size or a speed or his athletic ability. I'm
just saying he's a big guy and he's got a
hamstring problem.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
The only thing around when Beship does play. Garden Beship
does play. HARKing gets very very minimal time on the field,
if not none. You know, you know how they bring
the He stays on if he's fit, Garden Meship the
whole game.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah and so, but so Keller Hackins showed last week
when he played the entire game that he's okay to
come and call. And so I think, you know, okay
without laboring the point.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yes, I think we are laboring the point too, And
that's my fault, not your guys fault. Okay, So Winner,
I'm pointing to Bucky Winner.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah, Wellington to win badly. He bringing a lot of
supporters down with them though.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Okay already. Yeah, And I was lucky enough to have
duper se Coriefy and Brad Shields in the studio and
had to chat to them. And you know what I've
got to I've got to reiterate those people that didn't
hear that interview. When we started talking about a championship.
Both of them had that glare in their eyes, you
know that emotion, Bucky, you were outside talking to them.
They're ready, Yeah, very much so, they're ready, and they
(06:40):
both Brad Shields never won an NPC Championship, big moment.
You know, you guys both know what championships. You know
you want in history to say you've won a championship.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Import for Wellington as well, we're getting to.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Okay, let's move on All Blacks versus Japan, seven pm
Saturday in Tokyo. I was a bit surprised, Bucky that
they've sent half the team onto England before the game.
That was a weird one.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
It's about forty players over there isn't there, But that's
not surprising what they do these days with that team
the game itself, they'll be rusty. Eddie Jones of course,
coaching Japan. I went through that teamless. It's the only
player I did. Tanya Dournes's sons in the Japan Yeah. Yeah,
and so I think there'll be a rusty performance from
(07:22):
the All Blacks. A lot of new combinations, but like
Piney said, with Wellington, I think they'll win going away.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Well mean, Japan lost forty one seventeen to fig in
their last game, and what we put on FIGI seventy
in that test. What I'm most interested in is guys
who put their hands up tomorrow for places on that
northern tour and I'm looking at Billy Proctor in particular.
He had an excellent game against Fiji. Hasn't been sighted
than the Black Jersey since. But we'll get the chance tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
I know.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I think Ricco you're one. He's one of the ones
who's gone on to England. I think so. He clearly
will play against England. But I think Billy Proctor puts
his hand up tomorrow to play in some of those
Test matches. I'm not just talking about the game against
Italy at the end, the big ones against Ireland and France.
I think he's been I don't agree. I don't think
he's been mistreated, but he's been. He's been criminally under
used by the All Blacks list year.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
This is an old adage of where they all Blacks
say he's young, he'll have his time, Isn't it does?
Is that what's happening? Bucky? Do you think with him?
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah? I'm a big fan of Bully Propter and I
think he should be given an opportunity. But what Scott
Robinson's shown so far were the selections. He's very conservative
and although we want the Billy to play in those games.
From a Willington perspective, I can't see it. Piney, Antoninet Brown,
Enrique Juani will get their boarding passes for he gets one.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Okay, I want to go ask about face because I
want to talk about the Wellington Sports Awards Piney, because
I know that you've actually spent a lot of time
on this yourself, and you hosted the show last night,
which I think is a fabulous thing for Wellington. And
congratulations to all those involved in making it happen because
it wasn't going to happen. It didn't look like it
was going to happen. And I know from being involved
in sports that people love those sort of event nights.
(08:56):
So tell us talk us through that and tell us
who are the winners and who are the losers?
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yeah, I mean it was. It was a great night.
I must also give a shout out to a couple
of people. Nico Ordon who put it on and Chloe
look or order amazing mahi from her to get it
all done. And Miela or Iedlu Buchanan the Silver Fern
was MCing last night as well. The two of us
were up there. She was magnificent, absolutely fantastic up there,
(09:20):
just so so good. The winners, the sports Person of
the Year. They didn't have sportsman sportswoman, just sports Person
of the Year. Rach And Ravendra won that. Coach of
the Year performance was gian Calo Ataliano in fact, from
the Phoenix. Phoenix had a big night actually he won that.
They won Team of the Year, Club of the Year
and Lucas Kelly healed one Young sports Person of the Year.
(09:40):
But I think the best there was the induction of
the sports legends.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Loved that.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
But George Sandoval getting a Lifetime Contribution Award for the
amazing work he's done on road cycling.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
I thought that was the highlight of the night. Now
I've had a little good to celebrate for once, and
when you talk about the final tomorrow and hopefully when
he's winning good A lot of MUD's been thrown at
Wellington over the last few weeks and it's good to celebrate.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Yeah, And talking about George, I've had a little bit
to do with George. I haven't seen him for many,
many years. But what a passionate, fantastic the guy rode
cycling in this country. Wouldn't have you know, he got
it started. He was the guy when he came out.
He couldn't speed a lick of English. He was terrible.
You come to your trying to get some money for
good blood. Ten dollars, you know, that's what it was like.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
You know, was after more than ten dollars.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
You know what country is there?
Speaker 3 (10:24):
It's not I can tell you he was.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
He's a fabulous guy.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
He's a great man.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
You're right.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
He spoke no English when he arrived. He used to
he had a job on Potoni, he lived in the city.
Used to get the train and get to pott It
all by mistake because he couldn't read that. He could
read the signs.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah, you're a great man, great man, and sorry if
I I definitely didn't want to say. There's nothing but
respect for me for that man. Top man quickly Piney
Phoenix away at Perth Glory on Saturday night, eleven forty
five Perth. That's I mean any sport Perth stuff distance Derby.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
But all we're waiting for is next week the Derby
Auckland f C coming to town next Friday. Next Saturday
is going to be an absolute belt. Hopefully the finish
can win at Perth tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
That's the tough of the longest road trip in football?
Speaker 4 (11:03):
No, well actually, now Auckland FC to Perth is further
than Wellington to Perth.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
So you fly to Aukland then you fly out from
Auckland or do they fly to sid.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
I think it's just says the crow flies. It's just
a distance they fell cities. So Auckland's actually further from
from Perth than Wellington is.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Do Wellington fly to Auckland to fly to Perth or
do Wellington fly from Wellington?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I'm not across their travel plans.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Well, could you get a little bit better prepared for
next week?
Speaker 4 (11:27):
I think they go to the East coast of Australia
then on from that.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah, okay, you're right, you make perfect sense. And my
answer was it stupid. Have got a winner, he's got
a walk about?
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Well, who has texted?
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Myles Davis just texted me the answer and said give
me the jerseys and the tickets. I don't think we
can give them to Miles Davis.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
They wouldn't fit them. Who's the winner? Please?
Speaker 4 (11:50):
James Diamantus, Well, I'm James. Those tickets and jerseys.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Are all yours.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Sorry, Miles. Joey Joy the weekend, everybody, thanks for coming
in on the show today, well New Zealand sports host
Jason Py the sports broadcast Matthew Bunk.
