Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks at bould Niggs, new releases and keeping
tabs on local artists. Is music time on Wellington Mornings.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
It's music time on News Talks.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Thet be well Inton Mornings and we have our resident
music guru, man that puts all the music together for
all our radio stations, does everything.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
He's the guru of music.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Like that guru Yogi Pants.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
No guru. You want to talk. Good morning James, Good
morning Neck. How are you.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
I'm really good. Thanks having me in.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Thank you for being and thank you for being you.
You're such a great guy. I love being around you.
Do you want to talk about gigs today? But I
do want to talk about gigs You think been coming out?

Speaker 5 (00:54):
Oh yeah, there's a lot of big gigs coming up.
It's all happening actually round. It's getting into that time,
a season where all the gigs are being announced and summertime, summertime,
geeks for the young'uns, geeks for the oldies, gigs for
the in betweens, gigs for the uncles, gigs for the aunties,
geeks to buy for people for Christmas. When you're stuck
on an idea, so I thought, you know, I listened
to a lot of music, and I talk about a

(01:16):
lot of albums, but I thought i'd talk about gigs today.
There's a great one which I'm not talking about today,
but I am going to talk about for ten seconds.
One of some jazz Fest is coming up. And you
know our old mate Roger who, Roger Fox, who passed
away earlier this year. If anything that's you should go
to it, jazz Fest. It's the tribute to Roger Fox.
And I'm going to definitely get along kill.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Can I tell you that his brother, who I know
very well, Chris Fox, has actually emailed me, and Chris,
if you're listening to any of your family're listening, I
apologize I didn't get back to you, but I'd love
to bring you on this.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
He wants to come in out.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Yeah, yeah, oh look, that's going to be I'm going
to talk about jazz Fest the next time we're in here,
because it's going to be right at the start of it.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
So don't worry about that.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
You're going to I'm gonna give you all the goes.
But definitely, if you're thinking any gig, Roger Fox, the
tribute show is going to be the best thing in
jazz Fest this year. Forget about the international artists. We
don't forget about them. They're going to be great, But
go to that if you're going to go to one
thing that is going to be speak to aular great.
He was our great mate of the show and you know,
everything he's done is fantastic. So what I would have

(02:12):
wanted to talk about today. Another person who I think
is probably the king of soul in New Zealand, an
old family friend of yours, Louis Baker. He's got a
gig coming up and it's Saturday, fifth of October, so
that must be Saturday week.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
What are we near the Saturday week?

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Yes, Saturday week.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
He's got a new album coming out on the fourth
of October.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
That's next week.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
That's next week, the day before the show. He's doing
a vinyl release, He's doing a CD release. I've actually
ordered both of them. The wife loves Louis Baker. He
is spectacular.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
You got to get him on the show.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
How do you know I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm going
to get him. I'm going to try and get him
on next week. Before those shows and the release was.

Speaker 5 (02:51):
Yeah, his stuff is superb. You better buy all this
stuff at good record stores and all the Wellington record
stores are good. Let trust me on that. Or you
can check out Louis Baker dot bandcamp dot com. Let's
have a listen to his latest single. It's called so Good,
So all beautiful, soulful swagger.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
I always think Louis is.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
Unbelievable and when he cuts loose, it's incredible.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
I don't like talking over stuff. We've got lots to
going to get through today.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Can I just say one thing about Louis Bacon.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Whatever you think about his music, and it is unbelievably good.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
He is a person.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
I mean, I hope he hasn't changed because I knew
him as a school boy, and I knew him as
he's growing up and as he's become a man.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
He has been an incredible young person.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
Yeah, yeah, great New Zealander, I would say. And I've
talked to I've spoken to him in record chops.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
He's just a great guy, incredible. He should be should
be massive, worldwide, and.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
I've said that to him. I said he should be world,
he should be world.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Flann should be a world name. Okay, so next up,
we've got Herbie Hancock. And I was thinking I saw
Herbie Hancock last time he was in town. I was like,
and that was only about two years ago. Wrong, twenty
nineteen Willington Jazz Fest pre pandemic.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
So it all you know, timing gets all marked up
these days.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
Herbie Hancock is playing Wednesday, October ninth, Michael Fowler Center.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Now I was checking out the date before.

Speaker 5 (04:19):
First thing you don't want to do, don't hit the
very first link on Google. It's that terrible website via
via Go Go, and it sends you off to ticket sack.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
You might get, but you might not get. It's dubious
at best.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
You know, they might come at me for saying that,
but it's it's a proven track record. So buy your
tickets for Herbie Hancock. It's at the Michael Fowler Center.
It's put on by Live Nation. Reputable tickets are available
through ticket Master. It's not the cheapest, but honestly, last
time he just brought the best session musicians with him.
It was just a spectacular and I you know, he

(04:54):
had a drummer who had played with Sting, who had
played with Joni Mitchell.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
You know, like you're not going to get anything but
pure class playing with Herbie Hancock.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
He's not going to have.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
Class, world class, you know.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
And he's got forty two studio albums, which just blew
my mind when I was having a look this morning.
I'm a huge lover of the album Headhunters. I listened
to it or I listened to it on the way
to work this morning. It's funky, it's electro. It absolutely
destroyed the the traditional jazz heads in the early days

(05:26):
because you know, he went funk and electro a bit
like when Dylan went remember just you know, just fantastic.
Miles Davis loved him. Miles Davis was wasn't a particularly
great human being apart from being a terrific musician.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
Fired Herbie, but.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
Then they carried on playing. I actually, yeah, let's have
a listen to Herbie and.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
Funky grooves.

Speaker 5 (05:59):
He plays the craziest you know, like ke tar, anyone
who plays a key tar, great great guitar that looks
like a keyboard. A couple of tracks from Headhunters here,
it's just beautiful. It's gonna be a you know, it's
gonna be a terrific gig.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
So check it out. At Ticketmaster.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
Miles are not Miles Dakers. Herbie Hancock won fourteen Grammy Awards,
And now this took me down a rabbit hole earlier
in the week, and.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
You know what you're going to say. You want to
know people who haven't.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
Won won Grammy and Grammys are to kind of are
meant to recognize spectacular work in the music industry. And
there's some huge names that have never won a Grammy.
So Snoop Dogg's got the record for nominated for seventeen
never one. Diana Ross has never won. What is that
all about?

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Diana Ross?

Speaker 5 (06:48):
That's crazy. Bob Marley Hendrix probably wasn't alive long enough
run DMC. They only been nominated once, lost to Prince.
So you lose to anyone, you're going to lose to Prince.
So let's have a listen to some other juggernauts who
haven't won as well. This might surprise you.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Kiss never won a grand never won a Granny Beach Boys,
that blows my mind.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
That blows my mind too.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Ever, ever, that's never won a Grammy. Who else is
on this list? They're all instantly recognizable. Queen never won
a Grammy. I'm going to cry, get out.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I'm going to cry.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
And lucky last Guns n' Roses, the hell of a list,
hell of a list winning a championship. Hey, now we're
running out of times. I wanted another thing I wanted
to touch on. It's that time of year. I'm making a
lot of it. I make a lot of antifer into me.
It's Christmas party time. Let's get can I say that

(08:05):
some of the business who are advertising, they're starting to
fill up for their Christmas parties. If you want to
have a we've had it all, had a tough year.
If you want to have a killer Christmas party, get out.
Whether it's you know, your favorite bar and Courtney place.
If you're the staff Christmas party organized, I hope you
are for us and neck or you are No.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
I don't get involvation. Yeah they should get someone.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
We need someone to organize the killer Christmas party. Christmas
party time.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
Organize your Christmas party now, because some places are starting
to fill up, you know, so you know, get down
to your favorite venue and get the get the organizer
to do it. I want to point out one great
present for Chrissy Christmas New Year's Eve party brew Town.
They're doing a cracking gig. They've got a band that
is the two biggest songs they've had over a billion

(08:47):
plays on Spotify, Tuck Chuck and a couple of terrific
New Zealand bands Wellington, Wellington's own Black Seeds and Auckland
Hip Hop Royalty Homebrew. They're gonna have a cracking night.
You can get tickets through brew Town. Let's have a
listen to who they Who's playing Sublime These guys to
two hot singles, one million, one.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Billion Spotify place. I mean they'll put you, they put
their feet up. So that's pretty much it for today.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
You're always a pleasure, never a pain. You're a lovely man.
I love having you on the show. We'll talk about
those gigs closer to the time. Always nice to have
you here, James Irwin, our music man.
