Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk said b Niggs, new releases and keeping
tabs on local artists. It's music time on Wellington Mornings. Now.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
You all know how much I enjoy having James in
the studio. We work right next door to each other.
We don't get to chat too much because I'm always
in my studio and he's always in his studio. Jamesie,
what have you got for us today? I mean, I
know you want to talk about Tammy Nielson. Now, I'm
a fan of.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah, we're I'm a big fan. And we've actually talked
about her about a year ago. We talked about her.
She's just had a new album that came out called
Neon Cowgirl and Tammy's this. I think this is the
fifth album and I took a while to get to it,
and I listened to it last week and I'm already
putting it in my number one album of the year.
Like it's an absolute It's an absolute belter, and I
reckon you and the wife are gonna love it. Her chops,

(01:01):
her lungs. She is an absolute belter. Have a listen
to this. This is from the previous albums Sack and

(01:22):
You Are Mine. Yes, she has seen with Willie Nelson,
which we have talked about in.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
The past, hangs out with the big books.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, we'll talk about having a second take me away
to the place you are beyond. Such a beautiful voice,
and he's Willie. Just for a second, pull back to
Colonel I'll Inigo and come and go with me. I
really love Willie Nelson. I've been a Willie Nelson fan

(01:57):
since was a young fellow when it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
You were always on my mind.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Nelson's everything he did. So Tammy's been out touring just
you know, dropping a few names. Tammy's just toured out
in the States with Willie Nelson at his Outlaws festival
with Bob Dylan, you know, like she's just played the
Grand Old O Pray, which is you know, like that
live music show in Nashville, which is probably you know
everyone's played at Dolly part and Chris Christofferson, all the

(02:22):
hugest names of American country music. We've only had seven
artists from New Zealand play that. Eddie Lowe, who I love,
he played in nineteen seventy two, Keith Urban, who's married
to Nicole Kidman and Camille French from the French Family Band.
I don't know anything about them, but country singers who
are based out in Nashville with their night Tahoo family
from New Zealand, So and Tammy. She's got a huge,

(02:44):
glorious voice. Her new album Neon Cowgirl is spectacular. She
is touring and playing the Opera House on the third
of October, and I reckon she is at her peak.
I've seen her a couple of times before. I've seen
her at maybe it was the sand Fan bath House,
smaller gigs and off get beggars, and she has the

(03:05):
greatest musician. It's like the top she's now, she's open
for crowded house in the last year. On her new album,
she's playing Neil Finn's playing, There's a guy called JD. Abraham's.
She's just got some spectacular musicians who are playing and
singing with her.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
This fuzzy bass and when I say she's a country yeah, yeah,
well I'm loving it seriously. Album of the Year at
the moment. There's fuzzy bass, there's swagger, there's gospel, there's
fire and brimstone. I feel like sometimes that she's got
like the African American soul singers behind her. It's not
just country. It's got that big swagger. Let's listen to
some new stuff from the new album.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Fuzz.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
She's got such huge chops.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
And he is here with Neil Finn on the latest
album very Karen Carpenter. I think in parts as well,
song with some flat Girl this Niel Finn scat the

(04:35):
background shin Star. So if you're going to go to
any show this year, get yourself down to the Opera
House third of October. Tickets through ticket Master don't again.
When you search Tammy Nelson sometimes you get those weird

(04:56):
sites coming up via Go going that I can assure
you the promoter a as a top notch promoter, you know,
like we're talked about him in the past. He's plus
one touring, He's been around for about twenty four five years.
Probably one of the best promoters in the country. You're
assured that the show is going to go on. It's fantastic. Yeah,
So it's just a cracker. Temmy Nelson's your album, Hey

(05:16):
I Want to Move On? We did this, you love this,
I love that, Okay to Go songs that the original
and someone else has coming down it and made it
better or made it more knowing. And I remember last
time we did it, we had a heap of text coming.
So let's just listen to this first one. Here we go.
See if you know this is a huge country singer

(05:37):
from about fifty years ago.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I haven't got it.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
See if you know this part of it. So that's
Sonny Curtis. Here we go.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Then class.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Much more famous, huge class for a good sign, so
a better fun. The next one from nineteen thirty one
was actually written by someone before him, but there's no
knowing recording. Now listen to the next version can and

(06:28):
if you see the music video, the guys in the
band look like they spent all the all the valuable
budget on on beers and then they're set up in
the backyard and played the play the music. So a
bit of fun here we got one. More of that
got Peter Green Fleetwood Mac nineteen sixty eight before the
girls were involved.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
This first Carlos Center has to be.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Made famous with the guitar. I reckon, Carla, here we go.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
We're gonna talk about the best five guitars.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
And I've been doing that. I've been I've been collating
some around the office. I think that'll be our next time.
The best five guitarists. Listeners have to think as well,
because you can text in on that day already got mine, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I know yours. But he's Hey Gigs shape Shifter. I
know Coeps the producer. He'll probably be going to this
shape Shifter of playing MEO this Friday and Saturday is

(07:25):
gonna be an absolute banger. I think this is this
is it for them, so get along to that.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Is that the big venue of the smaller the big
venue they played them?

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, I saw Minui with a thousand people. They're the
other other week. Fantastic. That venue just heaves dead. Kennedy's
for all of our ex punk rocker listeners. They've been
around forever. They're playing Maio Nui with two original members
what is his name? East Bay Ray and Clause Flu Ride.
But no Jello Biafra. So if you don't you know

(07:52):
if you didn't. Jello Bafro was the band n ZSO
emerging artists like ten year olds playing with the n
ZSO Next Wednesday, September seventeenth, fantastic, Yeah, ten Bucks The
Saints November the first at Mao, great Aussie band, and
Drew Fagan from the Mockers. He's playing Saturday the fifteenth November.
Vogel Morn and in pie Cockerreky at the pie Cockercky Hall.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Which is a great vena.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
It's a grave venue, so there's a lot of gigs.
Brian Jonestown Maska one of my favorite bands. They're playing
Auckland next year. I'm we go to that trans mission transmission.
Vamp are playing next year and I want to do
a thing on them at some stage and Hot Sounds.
The price goes up on Thursday. If you want the
cheaper tickets, get in before Thursday. It's fun. Loving Criminals
is Tony Headley this jam Hell yeah, get into it.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Ah oh oh a break, have a break time, Time
to take a break and come back and wrap the show.
Thanks James, it's always so good to have you in
the studio. Love having your here.
