Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, I'm Holly Fry, host of Stuff You Missed in
History Class, and as a woman podcaster, I know how
important it is to amplify women's voices in this space.
That is why I am so excited to be talking
with a woman who is on her way to be
one of tomorrow's leading voices in podcasting. She's one of
(00:22):
the ten winners of Seneca Women to Hear search for
the Next Great Female Podcasters, created in partnership with PNG
and The Card by Seneca Women, Howard by MasterCard and Deserve.
After six weeks of training at the Seneca Women Podcast Academy,
she'll be launching her own show on the Seneca Women
Podcast Network with My Heart Today. I have the privilege
(00:46):
and delight of talking to Naive Rain. So I know
who you are because I have info on you, but
I want you to introduce yourself to listeners. Hi. I'm
an l A Native, but I have a Mexican parents,
so I'm Mexican American. I'm a hundred percent Latina and American.
I've been a journalist for over thirty years. I'm a
(01:07):
fourth time Emmy Award winning journalist, and I'm also an entrepreneur.
I'm a mom of two, and I'm very very happy
to be here because I am a podcast junkie. I
listened to podcasts seven I go to sleep listening to podcasts,
So this is my thing. So you have a career
in media already because of your journalism. At what point
(01:30):
did you decide I want to not just be a
podcast junkie. I want to be someone making podcasts and
using that avenue for my unique voice. What inspired that, Well,
it wasn't a decision that I took lightly because I
am in media and I know all the work that
it takes to produce a podcast. It may seem easy
when you're listening to podcast, but I know that it
(01:52):
takes a lot of production. It takes a lot of reproduction.
Once you hear the finished product, do you think that
it just kind of magically happened, But there's a team
behind it. So the reason that I dove into this
is because I listened to the promo for this contest
on the radio, and I had been pulling around with
the idea of doing a podcast. But I think when
(02:15):
I listened to the promotion for this particular contest, that
was kind of like a sign for me. Like, Okay,
I gotta do it. I know that it's going to
take a lot of work, So I just made the
mental decision that if I won the contest, that I
would be ready to take on the work that it
takes to produce a wonderful podcast. Speaking of wonderful podcasts,
will you tell us a little bit about the show
(02:36):
that you're developing. Yes, it's called Latina's Take the Lead,
and basically it's about all things Latina. Um. You know,
we are not a monolith. We're not just all about
culture or all about food or all about music. Latinas
we we love to talk about finances, we love to
talk about generational wealth, we love to talk about mental health,
(02:57):
we love to talk about all of these complaint topics
with our own twists. Right, So my podcast is going
to touch upon all the different things that Latinas talk about,
but obviously through our lens, through the Latino lens, which
is which is very specific. Like I mentioned, we're dred
percent Latina and a percent Americans, so we're two dred
(03:18):
percenters and every topic that you could think of, we
look at it through the Latino lens. And that's how
I'm going to approach my podcast. So how does it
feel to be selected by Seneca Women to hear as
part of this project Because you get to be when
you're in the inaugural class, and two you get to
really be a person that is driving listeners to hear
(03:42):
these unique stories in a new way. It's so reaffirming
and it feels so good to know that organizations like Seneca,
like I Heart Radio, like Tongo, who was one of
the partners in this endeavor, UM really put their money
where their mouth is, right. It really like Wow, these
these organizations really know the importance of amplifying voices that
(04:05):
are underrepresented, that need a platform, and we do need
the support. We do need people and organizations that have
access and have the power and have the platforms to
give us UM, you know, an opportunity to shine. And
it really it really touched my heart a lot, because
even though I've been in media for over thirty years,
(04:27):
it's still difficult to to break through and to get
attention from you know, big platforms like I Heart Radio.
So when I was selected, I just felt like, Wow,
the these organizations are really um doing amazing work to
to reach out to underserved communities. I love it so much.
I am so excited to hear what you do because
I know it's going to be phenomenal. Now, eb thank
(04:50):
you so much for spending this time with me. Thank
you guys, I am so excited to talk about all
things Latina. Inspiring words from one of the winners of
Seneca Women to hear search for the next great female podcasters,
