Speaker 1 (00:02):
One day I was with my mother's partner at the time.
We were in the car and like a rolling stone
came on and he said to me, there's a line
in there about your mother, And I said what I mean?
It was just inconceivable. It was like he was telling
me your mother knew Shakespeare. It was one of those

(00:26):
stories that made and refused sense at the same time.
And I knew that something was missing, and I was
also scared of knowing more. I was scared of wanting
to believe it. I was scared of knowing something that
would be a completely different story of my life.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
That's Sam Susman on a moment he discovers the possible
identity of his father, Bob Dylan.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
And you know, I think, like many parents, my mother
use the car ride and a captive audience to have
difficult conversation. And she brought him up, and it was
really the first time that, unprodded, she spoke to me
about their relationship and about meeting him. She talked to

(01:18):
me about how she'd met him in nineteen seventy four,
and at a certain point I said, did you ever
see him again? And she said yes, And she told
me that they had been in touch again much later on,
including the year before I was born.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I'm Danny Shapiro and Welcome to the thirteenth season of

(01:58):
always listening with curiosity, empathy, and support. I can't wait
to share ten new, extraordinary episodes with you. Stories of
identities lost and found, truths buried and revealed, and always
the pervasive weight of secrets and the liberation that comes
from speaking our truth. Welcome to season thirteen, which drops

(02:22):
on Thursday, November thirteenth. Here's Kate Price speaking on the unspeakable.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
What I really held on to particularly was being taken
out in the middle of the night. It was more
how I felt the next day I would be sore.
I knew something had happened to me in the middle
of the night, but once I got in the truck,
I couldn't hold on to what had happened, and my

(02:51):
father would often inject me with something. I've never figured
out what it was, but he would make me drink
a liquid or I would wake up to the cold
feeling of alcohol being wrapped on my right arm and
then being injected.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
And Aril's statuel on his myriad selves in search of authenticity.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Often what I would do if I didn't feel.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
Like I was being accepted is that you kind of
shoes an identity that other people can't have. And so
I remember that summer and deciding that I needed to
start fresh, and I showed up the school and it
worked well for as long as it worked. I came
in with skater shoes and the hair, and the big

(03:37):
thing was changing my name for Ariel to ari. I
thought that could camouflage me.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
And I also thought that taking my dad's last name,
Yeshiaghu and taking my mom's last name Statchel would given
space to be I wanted to be, or whoever I
wanted to create myself to be.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
And so it worked until obviously it didn't.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I hope you'll join me and my astonishing guests for
this new season of Family Secrets, coming Thursday, November thirteenth,
and available wherever you get your podcasts.
