Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hello, and welcome to another edition of Nerdificent. I am
one half of your host, Danny Fernandez, and sitting across
from me as always if you want anyway housing knowing, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
this is Comic Con Week. If you are you ready? Oh,
I'm as ready as I'll ever be, And by that

(00:31):
I mean not yeah, not ready at all. I've not
really made my schedule except for the parts that were
already made for me, so I don't even have to
worry about that. Yeah. No, I'll be on a fun
mission of just going around getting like special Comic Con
snippets for a special jam pack s DCC two thousand
nineteen episode of Nerdificent. Uh, wish me luck everyone. It's

(00:54):
going to be a wild journey. But you know, I
believe in myself. I believe in us. I believe in us,
and I bet I believe in a little thing called love. Yes,
we are joined up top by one of our good friends.
He also listens to this podcast, Iffie. That's how good
of a friend. He is a real friend. And if
you if you know a lot of people won't do it,

(01:15):
but they asked to be on it. Yeah, it is true.
We have comedian podcaster, host photographer Aaron Powell. Thanks for
joining us, no problem, thanks for having me. I do
listen to the show. I do my research for going
on any podcast, and I just I just like listening
to YouTube. So you know, I've been a guest on
I think all of you guys podcast. I've been across

(01:37):
band Across its super from Crillakrill is super special episode
of dragon Ball super at if He's Home. Yeah, You've
been across all of the Danny Iffi cinematic universe. I
am like the m V. I'm the Krillan. I am
always there for you guys. Yea Hector would have made

(01:59):
a card out of you to see if you survived.
I think I was like one more episode away from
just being a part of the show, just like the
recurring as well, the Mountain rushmore of krilling it. You know,
before we jump into what we're here to talk about,
which I'm super excited about, we talked about what we're
seeking out about this week, So what are you geeking

(02:21):
out about this a week I'm still gigging out about.
Anime Expo had just passed. Um. I was there um
all five days because there it's really five instead of
four now um working hard doing photography. I was on
a couple of panels. I was on People of Color
and Cosplay panel, which was awesome time, which I feel

(02:42):
we needed more time to do, Like one hour was
not enough for that one, but we got a lot
of good information out for that. I'm just honestly just
having a really great time with all the new anime
that I found out about, one of which, if you
would be really into, it's called, um, how much how
much do the how much? How much weight do the

(03:04):
dumbbell as you lift? It's it's it's a very long
anime ish title, and I know that, Yeah it's a
long question, but you were asking me serious. It's basically like,
how much do you lift? Bro? In anime? Is that?
It's pretty It's hilarious. It's not like a second episode
I'll send you. It's I'll send you the links and stuff.

(03:25):
I'm down. But yeah, yeah, well all right, well that's cool.
I'm super excited to you check out do you left
bro the anime? Super tight? What I'm geeking out about
is if you and I were at the Lion King premiere,
I was super dope. Beyonce was there, she got a
standing ovation before the movie started. Think it's like everyone

(03:49):
else chill, chill, chill Beyonce, everyone stood up here, and
y'all can say to people, I went to the movies
with Beyonce. With Beyonce, it was a good time. What
I wanted to say was I thought Billy Eichner like
stole the show so funny as Toman, Like I really
didn't know if they could do more with those characters
him and Seth Rogan, and they really did um And

(04:12):
also we were just talking about this before before we
started recording, but like everyone is kind of dunking on
They like released part of Matata for Jimmy Kimmel and
everyone is like dunking on it. And if you and
I were like, that is not what it looks like
on the big screen. But like and so it's I
just like, have kept I've just been quiet. I think

(04:34):
people also think I'm biased. They're like, oh, she does
stuff with Disney, like you know, but they don't. It's like,
because I'm sorry to interrupt, but like, movies are basically
filmed digitally, and they're made for larger screens, so when
you see it on something smaller, it's gonna look different.
That's just pretty much the name of the game right there. Now. Yeah,
and there was like so many parts that you haven't seen.

(04:55):
So but I understand if people are like, it's not
the original whatever, But like for me, it's great because
now we actually have like poc voicing the Lions. I mean,
it's a big deal in same with like a Laddin.
Now we actually have a person of color, but that's
voicing Aladdin. Um And like I know, it's not a
big deal to other people, but it's a big deal
to certain groups. So maybe you just like keep that

(05:16):
in mind when you're like, why why should this exist
because you don't want to hear dj is from full
House's boyfriend. Yeah, you know he was. He was like
a product of that time and now it needs to
be updated and anyways, So that's that's my piece on that.
And um, I thought Billy though, like stole the show.

(05:36):
Who's so great and funny? If you what are you
speaking out about? So for me, I am seeking out
about Cosmic Ghostwriter, which is a like kind of guy.
It's being written by Paul Sheer and Nick Giovanetti, who
or my showrunners for the show that I'm on, and
you know, the fun thing about working with someone who

(05:57):
is writing a comic is you're you know, usually you know,
between when we're working, you know, he's also dealing with
notes on the stuff and getting a little sneak peek.
And I gotta say, I really love the direction that
they're going in this next issue. I have been laughing.
I'm super hyped about it. So definitely look out for
that next month. But yeah, it's been cool, and you know,

(06:20):
you've been giving me some pointers and stuff, and it's
very interesting, uh to uh to really see that other
side of writing. So we'll see what happens with that.
If you what are we talking about today? Today we're
talking about an anime, and uh, anime that is better
multiple punches, Uh, no, just one. It's One punch Man,

(06:43):
which is, you know, great anime that is super fun
even if you don't watch anime, but even funnier if
you watch anime because it plays with a lot of
that kind of stuff. But first we're gonna get the
nitty gritty out of the way. One Punchman is a
Japanese superhero web manga created by One which began publication

(07:04):
in early two thousand and nine. The series quickly went viral,
surpassing seven point nine million hits in June two thousand twelve.
The Japanese shortened name uh Wan Panman is a play
on the long running children's character On Ponman Wan Pon,
being a contraction of one Punchy One Punch. One punch
Man tells the story of said Tom, a superhero who

(07:24):
has grown bored by the absence of a challenge in
his fight against evil and seeks to find a worthy opponent.
But yeah, I knew that nitty gritty just off rip
and I always That's what makes it so cool to
me is that this isn't your typical anime that's like
anime that's like based off of a manga from like
a a manga house, or like a publication that normally

(07:48):
you know is cranking out dope shown an anime or
dope action enemy. This is like a person who had
a web comic that like blew up and now it's
this insane respected anime, which I just love stories like that.
It's like very inspiring. I don't think I knew. Did
you see the comic before you watch the show? I did,

(08:09):
um I saw that this was actually the one like
anime property that actually got me to read manga. Like
I never read manga before. I never read it before.
And then I saw the web comic. I think I
saw it on like read it or something somebody posted
like a picture or something, and it was just this
like really unassuming looking guy who was just like beating

(08:31):
the crap out of everybody. Was just like one punch
and I'm like, wait a minute, this can't be real.
And then and then I started reading more of this
is kind of hilarious. So at the time, like I
don't think the anime had come out yet, but they
had already started doing the manga. So I started just
reading it. I was like, oh god, I just need
to see more of what this dude is doing. And
like the more I read it, the more I was like, hey,

(08:52):
this is making fun of everything. It's just like hilarious.
Now it makes it better because it's like, okay, it's
just he's really just taking all these different tropes and
just like just crapping all over and it's the it's
the funniest thing ever. And then when you go into
the backstory of the main characters side to my um,
I related a lot to him. You know, it's just

(09:14):
a guy who's basically doing something that he likes to
do just for fun, just for the challenge of it.
You know, he just wants to get better at doing stuff,
but he can't find any challenge anywhere, so he's super
depressed about that. Yeah. I love that they make fun
of the superhero shown in genre. Yeah and well, this
is a quote from one who the creator said, punching

(09:36):
is oftentimes pretty useless against life's problems. But inside one
punch Man's universe, I made say Toma a sort of
guy who was capable of adapting his life to the
world that surrounded him only armed with his immense power.
The only obstacles he faces are mundane things like running
short of money. In my opinion, that's not mundane. But

(09:56):
if money problems are mundane and you you good, we're
doing good, Well, it's probably because he can defeat anyone
he wants. Yeah, you know, I mean, even though he
uses that primarily for good. But that might be why.
Um So, what exactly drew you too? I mean, aside
from it being funny, what drew you to this franchise? Um? Well,
when I saw like a full picture of side to

(10:18):
my um. The title the title character one punch man,
I saw a lot of myself and the one he's
he's a skinny dude. He's like kind of tall and stuff,
and I'm like, okay, cool, a skinny hero. Finally, let's
do this. You know, we didn't get that to what
like Goku win Super saying God slim death. If he

(10:38):
is visibly upset that I brought that up. He is
visibly upset that I brought that up. But yeah, it's
just like a skinny a skinny dude. Like if you
go into his origin how he decided to become a hero,
he was just he was an unemployed guy looking for
work and he saw someone who needed help. Um uh.

(11:00):
Probably one of one of a long line of weird
villains in this show. H dude name of Kraiblante. He
was just basically a half craft half half man walking
around in tidy Whitey's bad because some little kid drew
nipples on him. Um. And he had the most challenging fighting.
He just chased that feeling until he got you know,

(11:22):
too strong for everybody. And then the artwork was. The
artwork was great. Um. The storytelling was. The storytelling was
awesome because they took out a key element of storytelling,
which is conflict. And the side of my hats absolutely
no conflict. He can solve everything with literally one punch,
and his conflict actually comes from real life problems like

(11:43):
being late for sale or you know, not having enough
money for rent, or like you know, not being able
to beat his friend at a fighting game. Stuff like that.
So when they take like the things like, oh, well
the world is about to end, don't worry. I'll punch
that problem away. Um onions go on sale today. I
gotta make it to the market. So so, like we said,

(12:04):
just huge success online and this series really began to
take off by the time uh one had written the
fifth chapter so on Nitosha, which is the site it
was hosted on. Originally, a series was considered popular if
it consistently received at least thirty comments, but by the
time that One had published chapter thirty, he was receiving
nearly a thousand comments per chapter, and in February two ten,

(12:28):
One put the series on hiatus to focus on work
on his family. But things changed in two thousand eleven
because he was contacted by the artists use gave Murrada
about a possible partnership where Murata would redraw the manga
for One Murada had been an enormous fan of One
punch Man and was ill at the time, Fearing that
he was going to die, he contacted One Wolf. Reflecting back,

(12:50):
he said, around that time, I was actually really sick.
I broke out in the hives and my inner organs
were infected and I couldn't breathe well and my wind
pipes were swelling as in the hospital, and I thought,
I guess people die just like that. If I'm gonna die,
I want to do something I'd really love to. I
want to draw Mango with Mr One. That's what I thought.
That's insane. Yeah, so you know what I gotta do. Yeah,
I gotta hit up a curatory and uh right when

(13:13):
my time is coming. Yeah. He was like, hey, you
gotta do it. So then U Barada. Since he was
already a successful manga artist, he was able to use
his connections in the industry to get a publishing deal
with Weekly Young Jump Comics, and that's how the manga started.
That led to the anime, which led to the legend
we all know as One punch Man being on like

(13:35):
Netflix and well I saw it on Adult Switch. No,
I saw it before Adult Swift. Where was that before?
Before Adult Swim it was on? Was it on Netflix? Okay?
So I saw the Netflix and then Adult Swim had
the dub. Yeah yeah, yeah, I remember that. I think
our friend Kylie Berry's in that. And now it's on

(13:55):
now it's on Hulu. Okay, yeah, now it's on who
Exclusively app but leave. Oh so Adult Swim pulled it.
I think Adults Swim pulled in like or I mean
they pulled it. Yeah, and like it's on us on
Hulu now because they just wrapped up season two like
two weeks ago, and I heard season two's out. Someone
go and watch. Yeah, so it's great for everyone listening,

(14:16):
Like you're not actually far behind the cover and they're
on season eleven. And like I wouldn't even people try
to hop into someone like I wouldn't even do it.
I can't wait to hear the five part nightmare. That's
one piece when you leave what I do. What I
do is I just skip and I watched the movies. Yeah,

(14:38):
that's what I do for a lot of things. Like
we saw One Piece Gold and it was great. I
actually love that movie. I started with the show and
then I was like, this is way too much going
on right here. I'm just gonna just skip to the
movies and just go from there. And now I'm a
much happier person that well. Yeah, like One Piece started
in yeah, and it's still running untill to this day.

(15:02):
And that they they're they're up there with like episode
I think like ww raw has like more episodes than
One Piece, and it's like neck and neck. Yeah, One
Piece is gonna lap Raws. Yeah, if you wanted to
watch One punch Man, you can get right in right
now because it's only on season two. Yeah, you don't
have to go through that long wait that we had. Yeah,

(15:25):
it was like years. That was a dragon ball Z
way what happened? There a lot going Yeah, there's actually more.
There's more seasons of Stranger Things and there are man
so get in. Speaking of the world of One punch Man,
So it takes place on an unnamed Earth like super
continent planet where powerful monsters and villains have been racking

(15:48):
havoc in the city's To combat them, the world's government
created a hero association that employs superheroes to stop them. Here,
I do want to say when this came out, also
my hair Academia and they're on the same time, very similar. Yeah,
Like something was in the water with like superhero classes.
It was like, let's let's make superhero and occupation with that,

(16:09):
you know, and like a world that idolizes them. Uh.
The heroes are ranked from class C to Class S,
said Tom. An unassociated hero hails from the metropolis of
City Z and performs heroic deeds for his own entertainment.
Love that very much. Kind of like a Goku character
in Man, Yeah, yeah, yeah, but smarter. He has trained

(16:30):
himself to the point where he broke his LIMITU and
can effortlessly defeat any opponent with a single punch, which
is what we were talking about. Um, so talk to
me about some of his Some of the villains and
the villains in this are quite hilarious actually, the villains, um,
they go through typical villain tropes. The first villain we

(16:50):
see is vaccine Man, and he's basically made from all
the pollution and stuff that people have put into the earth.
The Earth wanted to fight back, so vaccine Man was
He went on this long monologue and one and side him,
I just punched him in the mouth because he was
just talking too much. He's like, look, you're just boring
me right now. You limited twenty words or less, so

(17:10):
we can get down with this, do you anti vaxer
put that in there? Like Captain Planet being like shut up, right,
you just just just cut it out. I do want
to say, I went to uh Disneyland, um the other week,
and they have at Pixar pier. It's the saddest if
you'll have to send it to you. It's, um a

(17:31):
picture of these otters. It's like this picturesque like Bay Area,
like painting this mural. But then there's like these otters
and they're like holding a six pack ringlet and like
very sadly look like they're about to cry. And I'm
like this is so intense to be right, it's like
don't pollute and it's like right there for all the kids,
and it's like these otters like trapped in this like

(17:53):
ring pack. Anyways, Um, so we have the anti vaxer. Okay,
the anti vaxer have Lord Boris. I'm gonna I'm trying
to get my notes, right, Lord Boris. He's like the
main villain of the first season. Uh, very super saying
three like if it was evil looking with one eye

(18:16):
like and the boros yes, thank you. Uh. He was
basically one of the few people who could give Side
to My challenge until you find out that he was
holding back the entire time and was just like doing
this out of pity. He would he basically fought someone
out of pity, just knowing that he could have beaten
him a long time ago. He just wanted to give

(18:38):
him some fun before he gave him the one punch,
which he unleashed his super move, um, the super serious
punch at the end of the episode, he looks yes
this also uh, Speed of Sound Sonic, who is kind
of like a ninja like looking like Ninja guiding who

(18:59):
is just obsessed with defeating Side to My because Side
never remembers his name any time that they see each other,
like who are you again? Like do we know each other? Yes? Yes?
And u um House of Evolution. There's also like kind
of kind of villains kind of just not on the

(19:21):
side of good totally, but not outright evil or anything
like that, you know, because that's where his sidekick, Geno's
pretty much came from the House of Evolution, out of
like an experiment that made like a teenage kid a
cyborg who also talks a lot, which much to disagreeing
up Side to the villains in this show get a

(19:44):
lot more shine than the heroes because when you actually
watched the show or read the manga site, Tomad is
barely there, like because again he can solve all these
problems with one punch. That's just bad storytelling if you
just throw them in there. Everything kind of like circles
around everyone else, and the inside to My shows up
usually late, usually on accident, sometimes butt naked, just like

(20:07):
just to just to get out there and just d
end all the conflict going on. In season two, the
villain's name was Garu. He was the hero Hunter. Basically,
he was this guy. He was super duper strong, very
talented at killing people. He was trained by one of
the top heroes, and he just hated the hero way

(20:27):
of life and only wanted to fight the highest ranking heroes.
He didn't even think about side to my, even though
he encountered him several times. Inside him, I just basically
dealt with him with one punch, one kick, and one
very hilarious scene and he was just like, what's that
over there? You you just kicked the guy through a wall. Yeah,
I know he was in my way. He was running

(20:48):
towards us. You know, we have to take a really
quick break and then we're gonna hop back into one
punch Man right after this and we're back. And so Aaron,
you mentioned Jenos. Can you talk about like how sa

(21:08):
Tama you have been saying it different. That's how I say.
You say you got an accent on a different part
than yeah at me if you like no, I'm sure
you're correct. I know I probably watching and I watched.
I watched it. I watched it both and I've heard
it pronounced both ways on the same show. So we're

(21:29):
both correct. We're both right, like vegeta yeah, and Andarato
and I'm just speaking with the cd Y accent and
sits from CDZ, so they have a different accent. And
we can you talk about how he became a mentor
to Jennos and like what happened with Jennas really didn't

(21:49):
want to he really didn't want to not so he
met Jenos. He was fighting another villain who basically she
was a mosquito who could control other mosquitoes, suck the
blood out of everyone. Else her name escapes me at
this point and signed him up. Basically happened upon her
on complete accent as he was on accident as he

(22:12):
was chasing a mosquito through his house and then through
the neighborhood trying to kill this mosquito, like like, he
can kill anybody with one punch, but the mosquito is
where his weakness lies in this episode, and Jennals was
already in the middle of this fight, uh, and was
about to self destruct because that's what Jenerals does. That
that happens a lot. General's trying to self destruct because

(22:33):
he feels like he failed and this is the only
way out. Then he sees that Sion comes in takes
care of everything, but of course one punch and he's like, well,
you need to teach me how to get this kind
of power, And he's like, no, I really don't want to.
You have a nice day. I'm gonna go put some
clothes on and like, and he basically decided to convince

(22:55):
him to take the hero hero exam because you have
to register to become a hero and this society. Uh,
they both registered and become heroes, and then out of nowhere,
Jenos just shows up at side from his apartment with
all of his stuff, saying that he was gonna move in.
It was just like the worst relationship ever. He's like, hey, man,
I'm moving in. He's like, uh no, you're not. And

(23:16):
then he just slams a wad of cash on this show,
He's like, I can pay your rent. He's like, did
you bring a toothbrush? C DZ must be Korea town
where if you need people to just come over and
Korea towns in l A and it's really expensive. Yea,
I sound a lot like Jeno's my ex boyfriend. Sounds like, say,
Toma one day I came over and I just never

(23:37):
went and never go home. He he didn't even do
like a layers just bring stuff little by little. No,
he came with everything. It was like, hey, you're gonna
train me. I live here? Now? What about some of
the other heroes that are other heroes? The other heroes
are like my favorite part of the show because they
all like take something from different parts of anime and

(23:58):
like in different hords and all that stuff and put
it together and it's it's just a price to see
one of my favorite heroes from this show. And if
You've heard you say this on the on the on
the Ship on this podcast as well. Is a movement writer. Yeah,
the cyclist for Justice movement writer. He is just a

(24:20):
regular guy in BMX, biking out in outfit and he
rides around town something fighting crime on a bicycle his armor.
Kind of is a not too common writer, which also
is my favorite metal hero love the Common Writer series. Uh,
but like, yeah, he kind of is like this regular guy.

(24:42):
He's a regular guy just trying to do what's right
and all he's aimed, all he's armed with is his bicycle,
his bicycle helmet. And I saw so many moment Rider
cost players at Anime Expo. Has made my heart smile
when I saw that. I mean, it just really shines
as a character. Uh. And this goes to your point

(25:04):
where you say, like a lot of the show doesn't
really surround Saitama because he can handle everything. And so
really the like uh C King arc kind of was
about uh, movement writer and Supersonic, Like it really highlighted
like their journey and their motivations who they are, and
it was painted out perfectly fine because when you're C

(25:27):
class hero, you have to fight more crime than the
S class heroes. You have to solve, you have to
fight more like you have to do justice twice a
week to keep your rank or else you just lose
your license to be a hero. So he's just basically
out there putting his nose to the grind, just trying
to you know, level up. Uh. There's another hero that

(25:48):
just makes me, just makes me laugh because it's it's
just it's such a Japanese thing. Should call someone This
child Emperor's a ten year old kid who is an
S class hero who basically is like this super genius
kid who's very good at he's a tactician everything. He
walks around basically in a school uniform with a backpack

(26:09):
and a laptop and he just goes out and he
just makes up strategies for everybody to defeat someone. Then
there is He's the guy in the chair. Basically he's
the guy. He's the guy in the chair who can
actually put in work. Then there's the absolute weird Poori
Poori prisoner U Poori pouri prisoner is um And this

(26:31):
is how progressive this anime is as well. He is
an openly gay uh superhero who is very much he's
he's the anime strong man, like whenever he flexes, he
gets more muscles than he absolutely should. He's just he's
just really just tubuff for his own good. And at

(26:52):
the same time he he openly flirts with any man
that he finds attractive. Villain or hero, doesn't matter. And
that's why he got sent to jail because apparently he
got a little bit too grabby with some people and
they put him away. He does a lot of sailor
moon transformations and stuff. He does the poses where the
hearts come out in the back. Besides like his like,

(27:13):
you know, predatory behavior. Kind of funny dude, you know. Besides,
but besides like the parts of him, I'm like I
could do without that, you know. Jeno's also U S
level hero watch dog Man. Watch dog Man is as
a guy who dresses up as a dog, and he

(27:34):
has the prowess and the agility of a very strong
and very agile dog, and he looks like I'll show
you a picture of watch dog Man so you can
get what I'm saying. Yeah, he basically dresses up like
as he looks like side to my in a dog outfit,
and he's super strong, super agile. I think it's smart

(27:58):
for a tender profile picture. Absolutely. He he has the
ultimate profile picture picture for tenders. He's like, look, I'm
a dog and I and I helped the community, you know,
on the top level of all of this, so I
don't even have to solve crime twice a week. You know,
I have time for you too. Uh what about Bang
and King? Bank and King? Bank and King are very
very much featured in the second season. Bank and King

(28:20):
are two top top level heroes old school martial arts masters.
They actually trained the villain of the season as well, Garu.
I think, um, I think this is not much of
a spoiler, but they there's been hinting that he's one
of their sons. King is Site to Us best friend
now like they he is the one who can beat

(28:42):
him in King. King takes credit for a lot of
Site to Us work in the community. He's just a
normal guy, no powers, nothing like that. He can barely fight,
but he's really good at video games and he's just
good at being in the right place at the right time.
And he's basically been taking credit for other side of
his work for years. Mr Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's he's

(29:04):
basically Mr Satan and taking over for Gohan. You know
King has he has like the scars over his face
kind of like what Marvel character is that? I mean,
that's so many, yeah, a lot. I don't know. I
just ran myself into that. But he looks like just
every eighties action movie hero. I have a quick Can

(29:27):
you talk to people about what Saitama looks like in
his outfit and why he like wears why his outfit
looks like that? So go ahead, because then it is
truly one of my favorite things about the anime, because
this anime arguably has and I don't know if it's
the same for the manga. Two art styles for science, yes,

(29:48):
there's two separate art stuffs. There's Saitama. When he's just
a regular Joe, it's very baggy, he's like bald, he
has no no facial expression, has no definitions, no zero.
But let him get when he gets ready to punch,
he just transformed. It's like overly detailed, like super like

(30:11):
his clothes no longer like it's super tight, and he's buff.
It's so good, and I think that's like his real fault.
I think, And this is just a theory for me,
and anybody can tell me if this is like something
that's been confirmed. But I think what we see when
side somebody is like kind of in his plane, like
any kid just drew this mode. That's how he sees

(30:33):
himself and how he gets serious, that's how he actually
looks because that matches the animation of everyone else's. He's
drawn totally different from everybody else. And even when you
look at like flashbacks back when he had hair and
there's a reason why he lost his hair, when you
look at before he lost it, he doesn't look the same.

(30:53):
It's not it's not like you can put hair on
his serious mode and you get back to where he was.
It's like, whoa, that's a totally different dude. And his
suit is I think it was issued to him because
when you become a hero, the Hero Association gives you
a uniform if you don't have one already, and they
also give you your superhero name. You do not get

(31:15):
to choose your superhero name. And his superhero name is
caped Baldy, which is like the laziest that's like Shank
Song's Island. Yeah, Like that's like so lazy that they
just call him Cape Baldy. And like um Geno's hero

(31:36):
name is Demon Cyborg, which totally awesome name. Totally awesome name,
but like he's drawn so plain. He looks like just
a regular banana. His suit is yellow with black belt
with a gold buckle. He has a white cape with
two black things that fastened this cape to his to
his body and that's his suit here, red boot and

(31:59):
red u. Huh. I remember the first time I saw
cosplay of him and like, why are these people dressed
like cleaning people? Like he looks like he's a cleaning
and or has madic Yeah, with his yellow suit and
his gloves. Yeah, he was like an anime version of
Charlie Brown. I think one of the reasons I really
like Genos too is I don't know if you'll remember

(32:20):
this anime when it came on Adult Swim or if
he saw it on your own, but Andrew ki Kheider
was really cool. It was like essentially a Pinocchio story
with this android and uh, he was looking for his
creator and that's kind of story. Yeah, So it just
reminds me like Genos. Genos is interesting because he could

(32:43):
be the strongest person on the show if he had
any kind of battle since because he knows how to fight.
He knows how to hold his own. He just can't
get the job done for some reason without trying to
blow himself up. You know, he's too impact. He's only seventeen,
so like age might come into play with that, and
he absolutely has no idea what he wants to do

(33:04):
with it's life, you know, which is a great point
of his character. The other heroes, there's also there's there's
a couple of female heroes in the show, but the
one that I love the most is and I'm I
don't know, I'm not alone with this is a Tornado
of Terror who she just basically wears her little black
dress and she has green hair, and she can basically

(33:26):
just she can make um, she's telekinetic, she has all types,
all sorts of mind powers, can you can fly and
all this stuff. And she has a younger sister who,
yeah her her, Her and her sister are known as
the Psychic Sisters. Basically, she's one of the s class
heroes as well. I think she's the number three hero

(33:48):
like out of all the heroes and the hero association, yeah,
which the hero Association, how it got started was taking
it back from side to my side to my saved
the founder of the Hero Association grandson who was the
one who drew nipples on craplane. Yes, would you like
to describe what he looks like, the grandson? Yeah, so

(34:10):
the grandson is it's always comedy by the way. It's
so it's great and and and a lot of other
you know, a lot of other shown in actually does
set out to be comedies, right, And there's always one
extremely weird looking normal person character and all these So
the kid who he saved has this very long, droopy chin,

(34:36):
and it's like his chin goes all the way down
to like his navel, I guess. And and he's shape
it looks like, yeah, it looks like I'm trying to
clean it up because I know this is genitals. Yes,
it's it's shaped like genitals. And this kid is a jerk.
Like for someone who looks the way that he does,

(34:58):
he could stand to be just a little bit nicer
to people. But you know, he looks like one of
the villains for Men in Black two. He was a
ball Chinian that nothing but nineties references from. So what
were some of your favorite moments from the last two seasons.

(35:18):
Let's just talk about the first season. What was your
some of your favorite moments. One of my favorite moments
in the first season was how he actually two of them,
how he actually explained his powers and like a quote
that he had made that I kind of remember every
day in my life now. How he got his powers
is extremely underwhelming. It's not like he was born with
him or anything. He was just inspired to just become
a hero. He trained, he trained, and his training regiment

(35:42):
is super boring. However, it is the most intense workout.
It's an intense workout. I I've done it. A couple
of push up, hundred hundred squats in a ten kilometer run. No,
that's a good workout. It's great. Like you don't have
a Yeah, it's a great work out. The next day
you will feel like you are going to die, but

(36:04):
like it is a great workout. Um, if you're gonna
do it, break it up and sets. Um, so don't
do it straight through? Do do ten take arrest? Do
ten take arrest? Stuff like that, And then he had
a quote that this is what really like locked me
into the character. He said that every human being has
a superpower, and that is we can change ourselves whenever

(36:24):
we want, Like we have that ability, and I'm like, wow,
that that really translates very well in real life, Like
you can change yourself at any point, good, bad, right
or wrong. You have the power to do so. Um.
Those are my favorites from like the first season the
second season, which a lot of people dump on because
of the animation. I this, this might be me, I

(36:45):
might be alone in this. Didn't notice it didn't notice
how different the animation was at all. The funny thing
and this one is uh side him decided he wants
going to find a challenge. He found out about this
martial arts tournament, uh, which you know dragon ballzy martial
arts tournaments awesome. Uh. He goes to his martial arts tournament.
He's not signed up, so he impersonates someone who is.

(37:08):
He puts on a karate gi in the worst looking
wig ever that he has to keep fixing throughout the
entire tournament. Uh. He they find out that it's not
a real wig and he gets disqualified in the finals.
And he was basically going against a guy who was
also defeating people with one blow. He's beating people with

(37:30):
one kick. He had a bad too pain. It was terrible,
like it was it looked like one of those hats
that the English guards wear that Buckeham Palace, and it
was just blonde and like on top of his head,
just just there. Uh. Speaking of quotes, because you had
that one quote, I have another one that I like

(37:51):
from him, and it's who decides limits? And based on
what you said, he worked hard, Well, maybe you need
to work a little harder. Is that really the limit
of your rank? Could the you of tomorrow beat you
today instead of giving in? Move forward? And I like
this other one. I'll leave tomorrow's problems to tomorrow's me. Yeh.
I think we all do that. I think, yeah, that's
kind of dangerous. Tomorrow is this mystical place where nothing

(38:13):
gets done. It's like, as my student loans, that's so
our friend, you're doing a Travis has the best quote
about that. Either I'm going to pay it all at
once or not at all. He's a big He had
his album cover art. First comedy album was one he

(38:35):
did a video about um like the differences between the
anime and the manga as well, like on Get Out
of the Robot. Yeah, one is very interesting in the
sense that you know it's if you haven't figured out
by us saying one, it's kind of his moniker no one.
It seems like no, no, there's no pictures online. No,

(38:58):
I haven't seen one. So it's it's crazy, Uh, just
the idea of this person and how like mysterious they're
Japanese BANKSI yeah, yeah, well, and it's so weird because
in our industry, everyone wants to be recognized and to
have someone that's like, is okay with not necessarily being
well known, and that that sounds almost refreshing and scary

(39:22):
at the same time, you know. But yeah, and he
gave us one punch Man, which is awesome. So yeah,
the only picture of him online is this picture he
drew him drew him stuff. Yeah, where it's just a
circle and just that thin lipped He basically drew base

(39:43):
level you know. I I lie. There's a one picture
of one japan Award for hiding I remember that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
He's looks young. It looks like what the heck? Well,

(40:04):
this makes sense if he was doing a web comic. True,
he I think he's younger than us. Wow, let's see
if the yeah he was Yeah, No, he's older, he's
older than us. He's two years older than us. He
was born October. H yeah, he's younger than me. Oh

(40:25):
well that's uh, that's really cool. I guess we could
talk about the future of One punch Man or things
we'd like to see. So we'll see you after the
break Welcome back the Nerd Efficent issue. Boy, if you
way across from me right now is Danny. You know what?

(40:47):
I'm pulling up an article and the article title is
why do people like One Punchman so much? I don't
get it. Well, I can totally imagine like someone who
likes doesn't watch anime at all, but actually no, because
my buddy Kyle, who's never seen anime, he was like,
he was like, I just never found one. I was

(41:08):
into fell in love because of One punch Man, and
because of that, he like took my suggestion and watched
Devil Man Cry Baby, which is a huge jump. But like, okay,
if you and I know people that make those like
houred long breakdown and I feel I could see them
not liking One punch Man because power levels have no

(41:31):
nothing here and because it's making fun of all the
anime they love. So I could see them be like,
why do people like this? Because there's a crab man
and like a kid with balls on its chin and
um yeah, so I could see people that take those
other ones so seriously not liking this, and that's the thing.
And Nana doesn't take anything serious. The only thing he

(41:52):
takes serious is people making fun of him from being bold. Yeah,
Like there was this like this group that they were
trying to frame him for doing something. He got mad
that they were stealing his look because they were bald too,
so he kept getting associated with them. Um like, he
just does not like when people poke fun of him
for being bald at all, because like him losing his
hair after his intense training is a real sore spot

(42:15):
for Yeah, that's real funny because there was that one
scene where he draws the eyebrows on. Yeah, that was great.
And then the Tank Top Heroes, All I love those
guys Tank Top Tigers. Yeah, those are those were my
favorite because I remember because they had that wonderful moment
where they were griefing him because the city got you know, destroyed,

(42:38):
and and it was that perfect moment of like, y'all
ain't doing nothing. You all over here giving him a
hard time. But they were like, oh, it'll make us
look good, and uh that was great because then that's
where we introduced Lord Borrows in the culmination of all that,
which was the end of the season arc which it
was all fun. I loved it. Oh yeah, so what

(42:59):
so there's fighting game now? Yeah? Yeah, let's talk about
the fighting game. The Fighting game, Um, it's it's coming
out soon. And I'm a little bit confused about this
because if One punch Man can defeat anybody with literally
one punch, are you playing as the Is it going
to be like the show where you just focus on
all the side characters inside to us the boss at
the end that you have to try to defeat and

(43:21):
you can't get punched right because he's he's doing all
of his his signature punching moves. He's doing a consecutive
punch and all that stuff. And I'm like, I'm trying
to figure out, like, because they haven't released too much
information about the game at all. I was at the
Fundimation booth where they were like playing like gameplay of it.
I didn't think that One Punchman was under Fundimation. Crunchy

(43:43):
crunchy roll, crunchy roll, Yes, yes, yes, yes, it was
crunchy role I wish both YEA would hire me to
do stuff. Gonna slightly apologize for that GAF, but yeah,
So they were playing a gameplay and like they didn't
have really too much information of like the storyline of
the game, so I kind of interested, and how well
I have some here. So one punch Man a Hero.

(44:04):
Nobody knows that's the name of the game. It will
feature three on three versus battle, so that does make
more sense what you're saying of having the same characters
where you can play of various characters from the animes
such as Geno's Hellish Blizzard, Speedo, Sound Sonic, and Movement writer. Naturally,
Satama will be a big part of the game, but
the issue is whether he will be an invincible character
or not. And then, like speaking to like the future

(44:27):
of it, I hope I don't have to wait another
to three years for another season. That was because I
had an end of Season one ended was so good.
I just wanted to see more. But they had issues
with the previous animators. They changed animation. It happens so much. Yeah,
it happens more than people. Yeah, I honestly know. Well,
and then they came out recently there was an article

(44:50):
I was looking at where it was like just how
overworked Japanese animators are and like it's just like working
them to the bone essentially to get these out. So yeah, yeah,
and that's why there's such a difference in animation quality
that has done so much of the anime um that
we get because when you change the studio and we

(45:11):
change studios and then you have less time to do
stuff like it'll, it'll the product will show again. I
didn't notice much. There were like some little things, but
it was like insignificant to the point where I mean
it's like, oh, this animation is bad. Now. Everything kind
of looked the same. Jeneals has a new look, which
is which I like. Jennal's had a hoodie that I

(45:31):
immediately got online and try to find. Um. Yeah, and
then they they Then the manga is still going as well.
I think they just released volume twenty a week ago. Yeah. Well,
if I have a question for you, um going against
your faive Goku, who do you think that would win?
That always comes up. I mean, of course it does,

(45:53):
but I mean you have a character that can literally
defeat someone with one punch exactly, And my my thing
is kind of like the the system is gamed. So
I have to as much as I hate to say that,
I have to give it to Sai Tama because it
is he is. Like for example, when people are like,
who can beat the Hulk, and it's like, no one.
Hulks literal power is that he gets stronger if he

(46:15):
gets angry, he gets angry if he loses. It's a
it's a infinite loop of power that Hulk has. So
Superman cannot beat the Hulk. No one can beat the Hulk.
And people are gonna write and they're gonna add some
dumb qualifier like well smart Hulk, and I was like, well,
we're not talking about Batman had prep time. No, not

(46:36):
even what prep time. This man is broken, which is
why they introduced smart Hulk. Which is why they introduced
red Hole because they knew they built it, which is
funny because they built a broken character and Hulk and
just worked around it. They built a broken character in
Phoenix and killed her. Yeah, now I got I got
something for you. Uh If that you'll that will bring

(46:57):
some happiness to you. That Goku is gonna lose to
side Toma. Goku has to lose the side Toma why
Because Goku's purpose is to train to get stronger. So
as long as he has somebody who can beat him,
Goku can fulfill his life stream to keep training to
get stronger so that he absolutely can't possibly beat him. Yeah,

(47:18):
so they kind of need each other if you think
about it. So if they ever were to come across
each other like that, well they are very similar that
they just want to They just want to change. Yeah,
they just want to challenge. They just want to fight
to get stronger, right, they just want to change. He'd
frustrate Vegeta to no end. But I'm pretty sure that
we tackled this in our Dragon Ball episode. But when

(47:39):
um A Curatory actually was like people are reading Goku
the wrong way as a hero, like he actually just
wants to fight, just want to fight. Yeah yeah yeah.
So in the end, it's like he's not as noble
as you think, not at all, because like if you
see how he treats his own son, you know, he's like, hey, wait,
here's a sense you being a villain so that you

(48:00):
can defeat my son before you before you kill my son,
I want to make sure you're completely fresh. Hold on,
stop charging that being it is all Goku is is
just an immigrant parents. It's like, oh, he was like, no,
if you beat cell like this, that's a B. You
need an A plus. So let me make sure he's

(48:20):
fully charged up. I mean a thousand percent. Chee is
an immigrant mom. Study I'm sorry, I don't I don't
care how much. Uh well, until he makes money and
then when you can get all that, Zenny, and then
she's like, you know, I've always believed in you. Yeah,
I've always always, always knew your fighting would bring us money.
Always knew if this is gonna work. You know, you

(48:42):
stopped doing tournaments, which we're paying very well. But you
know that's fine. You know you have this billions any
cool go train, stay away for as long as you want.
I got my two children. That's cool. But yeah, like
insight to ords like that too. Because he didn't want
to join the Hero Society until he found out that
they paid. He was like, quait a minute, I can
make money. I mean that's smart. Like if you're thinking realistically,

(49:04):
it's so funny in the in you know, DC and
Marvel that it's like everyone just does this out of
the goodness of their heart, except for the Avengers. The
avengers get paid. I mean yeah, yeah, yeah, but they
also have like I mean several of them die so
severn but like, yeah, let's do this out of goodness
of our hearts. And I gotta go to my day
job tomorrow with bruises and stuff. I mean, freaking Luke

(49:28):
Cage was literally a bartender. So yeah, he was a bartender.
And he swept the floors at the barber shop. Yeah yeah, yeah,
he wasn't even a barber. A bodyguard. Yeah he was
a bodyguard. I have to do that, like eight jobs.
As if he lived in l A. He could have
robbed a bank and he's bulletproof, right yeah, like they say,

(49:49):
with great powers, a great responsibility. Well, Blue Cage is
a mob boss now, so the responsibility. Where can people
find you? You guys can find me on Instagram at
your favorite skinny man, on Twitter, at your faith skinny man.
Because they don't let me have enough letters. Uh yeah, big, big, big,

(50:10):
just angry about that because of Brandon reasons and Facebook.
Aaron Rampal I add, just about anybody, as long as
you don't look creepy and as long as you're not
evil person, we get to go. Yeah, and you guys
can listen to my new podcast I'm gonna be launchings
about two weeks. It's called Aaron's Wine and Cheese Party
because I like wine and cheese parties, but I don't

(50:32):
like having companies. So it's a remote wine and cheese party.
Your wine, your cheese, your house. And if he and
I will be at San Diego Comic Con this weekend,
if you're on our our friend Mark Ellis's show that
is at the American Comedy Co. Right, yeah, yeah, yeah,
We'll be doing stand up at American Comedy Co. It'll

(50:54):
be fun. There's gonna be two shows. I'll be on
one of them. Uh, we'll let you know closer to
the date which hour I'll be on. And then outside
of that at eight pm, and that is Thursday July,
there's a show at seven thirty and one at nine thirty.
So that Thursday, that's what I'm gonna be doing. And
then Friday at a eight o'clock I'll be doing a

(51:20):
comic com panel with Joe Starr. More details on that
will be tweeted out. And then beyond that, yeah, I'll
just be running around just say what's up. I have
two panels on Thursday, definitely come out. One of them
is at the Grand Marquee. It's Room twelve. It's the
Most Dangerous Women panel two pm tomorrow. Brooks, who was
on a Wonder Woman episode who kicked but on that

(51:41):
is is moderating it. And then I'll be on Sci
Fi Wires great debate show with a bunch of other
people that are going to be on it. Watch Me
debate three thirty pm in the ball room twenty. That's
in the con If you and I are doing a

tell him why Vegita could beat There we go, you know,
just get us a drink to have drinks with us.
Um And that's where we'll be Whiskey Girl at gas
Lamp five pm on Saturday. Come say hi. We will

(52:23):
be there. Have a safe can everybody. We'll see you
