Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. I welcome stuff. I've
never told you a prediction of iHeartRadio and welcome to
another sub sub sub subsub subsub segment of fictional women
around the world. And for this one, we are talking

(00:29):
about ev from The Mummy. Yes, times lost all meaning,
I'm pretty sure our episode on the Mummy three has
already come out, but it should have. I think so, yeah,
it should have, but things chaotic case happen. But we
have talked about her before in our classic episode on

(00:51):
the Mummy and the Mummy Too, we talked about the
Mummy too. I feel like we talked about her in
some other episode. But anyway, we've talked about her before.
But we thought since with the news that they're possibly
bringing Rachel Vice, sed Brynd Fraser back for The Mummy four.
The og, the og. This is movies that both of

(01:15):
us like. It's the end of the year, we thought
we would bring this character back.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
So we are talking about Evelyn e v O'Connell, Nate
Carnahan from the Mummy franchise, the original Mummy franchise. Not
it's Tom CRU's foolery that happened that first introduced In
the nineteen ninety nine film The Mummy, she was largely

(01:44):
played by Rachel Weiss and then Maria Bello and the
third one. As we discussed in The Mummy three, whether
it's come out or.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Not, you know what. Either way, she needs to make
a cameo somehow, whether she's cool the whole background of
one part or some reason like she got a raw deal.
I feel so bad for her, honestly.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, that would be I think that'd be a nice
touch to bring her back in. So Evie was a
character that resonated with a lot of people, and there's
actually a lot written about her through a feminist lens.
This was another episode that I had to just stop
because there's so much written about her. This is supposed

(02:30):
to be a shorter segment than it was getting out
of hand, but people have written a lot about her,
so let's get into it. Evie was born in England
and grew interested in Egypt at a very young age.
Her father was a famous explorer of Egypt and he
married an Egyptian woman. They gave birth to Evie and
her brother, Jonathan, who, by the way, I had an

(02:50):
embarrassing crush on when this movie came out.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Have you ever seen Sliding Doors? No, as him and
Gwyneth Paltrow, and he plays the lead, the main romantic guy.
And I had seen him first in the Mummy, so
that did not correlate.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
I could see that. Yeah, he shot up in the
Last of Us. I was like, wait, right.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Right, I mean, but like that's the in England. I
think he was kind of the one of the men.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
The men, Yeah, you grant the universe. I'm kind of
surprised I went for him. I don't know why. So,
I mean it's a running joke that the whole cast.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Is like a yes, a sexual awakening for sure.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
For Shure.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, I mean he is charming, but he's also supposed
to be goofy and like conniving.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah exactly. Yeah, Yeah, what was that doing anyway, There's
nothing Wrolse. It's fine. So Evie was specifically interested in artifacts,
and even more specifically the Lost Book of amen Ra.
Her parents died in a plane crash that some believed
was due to a curse of a mummy her her

(04:00):
father had disturbed.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Do we have a prequel? Possibly?

Speaker 1 (04:03):
What I know? Right, I had never heard of this.
This is why I had to stop because I'm pretty
sure this is from like a comic. It's not in
the rhy movie. No, but anyway, Yes, they die in
this plane crash. Maybe a mummy had something to do
with it. While Jonathan seemingly we don't know, but seemingly

(04:28):
wasted his inheritance. Evie used it to study and to
apply to the renowned Bimbridge scholars but her application was
denied due to lack of experience. So Evie then starts
a job at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities, apparently in
part due to the reputation of her parents. Like it's
implied that she never would have gotten the job without.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Her He said they were heavy contributors, like financial contributors.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
So rude, so very rude. I mean she did well,
let's get into this part. So on one fateful day,
while shelving books, she accidentally set off a domino effect
with the bookcases of the library, knocking all of them over.
Dejected and yes kind of this guy, her boss yells

(05:16):
at her about this. She runs out, and who does
she find Her brother, who tells her that he has
found something that she should see. At first, she dismisses
him until she sees that it's a puzzle box and
that she suspects that it's actually a real meaningful find.

(05:38):
Inside the box is an ancient map. This leads to
her meeting Rick O'Connell, the person Jonathan stole the key from.
Rick reveals he has been to Hominoptra, the velocity of Hominoptra,
and that he can take them there if they get
him off of death Row, and also he kisses ev

(05:59):
in this. So Evie does get him off of death
Row by bartering, and Rick agrees to guide them to Hominoptra.
More sexual attention between Evie and Rick, more pining happens,
more mishaps. They arrive at Hominoptra. Evie is the first
to arrive and kind of a sort of race that
they're doing. Rick supports her, stealing and gifting tools for her,

(06:24):
looking to her for leadership. There's a drunken, flirtatious night.
Eevie shows off her knowledge and expertise in multiple ways
in the following scenes as she explores the ruins and
searches for the Book of amen Ra while avoiding the
American crew of explorers. However, what do they find? A

(06:45):
mummy and a sarcophagus opened by the key that they have.
The mummy is strangely still decomposing. Later, they find out
the Americans have found the Book of the Dead, which
Evie steals, deals and opens with her key, finds an
inscription and reads it never good, Never good in horror movies,

(07:08):
just Gotta Say, and unleashes the seven plagues and brings
the Mummy back to life. While Rick wants to run,
Evie is determined to fight and find a way to
stop the Mummy to fix her mistake. It turns out
that the mummy, m Otep, has determined Evie will be
his sacrifice to bring back his love a Noaksuna Moon.

(07:30):
While ev is fighting to be included, Rick is trying
to protect and sideline her. The Mummy finds her and
kisses her, and later kills most of their comrades and
corners the survivors, convincing Evie to give up and go
with him, which she does of her own decision and
is transported to hominoptra Oh. And this is after she

(07:52):
realized that Bembridge scholars had mistranslated the location of the
Book of Amunrah, which she believes, you can kill him
so many good quotes from this movie, so many good quotes.
The Mummy prepares to sacrifice her, but Rick and Crue
release her and she is able to translate a passage

(08:12):
from the Book of Amonra that makes the Mummy mortal
and Rick kills him. So yes, they did find the
Book of Omonro, the actual one. Uh. They ride off
together in the sunset, so honestly, I could have. I've
saw that movie so many times. I could have. This
could have been a very long episode, but I was
trying to condense it, so that was me condensing it. Yes,

(08:36):
the next two are going to be very condensed though,
so In the second one, they have a kid named
Alex and she has past life memories of being Nephertiti,

(08:57):
an Egyptian princess who fought with an oxy in a moon.
She is able to channel this past life to fight
a NOx suner moon and save Rick and her son,
which notably a Knacksuna moon does not save Emo tip
she runs.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Away to save her own life.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Mm hmm. And this is all after Eva has been
stabbed and been resurrected, which I guess is a thing
in this franchise, because yeah, now it is the third
one we see her older retired writing romance adventure books,
but clearly missing the action, as is her husband. And
this is when she is played by someone else, Maria Bello.

(09:36):
They decide to take one last undercover mission to Shanghai.
They run into their son and Jonathan, Mummy's ensue. Something
in Evie's blood helped kick off the whole thing, because
she was a good person, and that's what it took,
I suppose. Anyway, she bonds with her son's kind of
assassin girlfriend and they work together to take out the

(09:59):
Chinese Emperor. So that's what we have so far. If
you want more detail, see your episodes on The Mummy,
The Mummy Too, and then Bummy three. Yes, yes, yes,
but as mentioned, she is a very popular character. She's smart,
she's capable, she's funny, she's very goofy. Rick supports her

(10:21):
and her endeavors. As we talked about in that Mummy episode.
What inspired that was a post about how she was
kind of a feminist heroine and he was a I
don't think ally is the right word, but he was
just supporting her. He was there to support her, and
this comes up. But I found so many articles about this,

(10:42):
so she's the leader, and he is there to support her.
She's very brave. She doesn't give up. She's the one
that's like, no, we Unlicia's mummy, I intend to stop him.
I'm not gonna stop. And she's the whole reason. She
moves the plot along. She is the one that moves

(11:03):
the plot along. She is leading the action. And I
was reading in a couple of articles last night she's
never actually blame. She's never it's never pinned as her fault,
like they don't they don't do the thing they normally do,
where it's like it was you, you were the one.

(11:25):
Instead she it's more in her court where she's like,
I'm going to fix it, yeh, which I think is great. Also,
she's a librarian, you know, we love we love librarians.
She's great, and she's the one that really saves the day.

(11:47):
She has the support of Rick, of all these other people,
but she is the one who is determined to fix
this and does through her knowledge and bravery and determination.
And I loved her. I loved her. I saw this

(12:08):
movie in the theaters. I must have been quite young.
I was very scared. It scared me, to be honest
with you, But I loved it, like I just and
I loved her, and I thought it was funny, like
it's just kind of a fun adventure.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Yeah, maybe she does have some great lines, and I
think got something. They really did upgrade her, like involvement
in the second one, Like the first thing you see
is her impants doing an excavation and then kicking a
sake in the number two movie as they reintroduce her
and how she's grown, and I did think it was
kind of interesting, like the way they because they decided

(12:45):
to put her into more actions, so obviously they really
wanted to like upgrade all her like it's like a
video game, like it's her skills kept going up and
so like she was taught to fight a little bit
with Rick. He's like he taught her as we saw
in the first one when he was teaching her to punch.
And then the second one that these memories are of
her being a warrior came all flooding in and she

(13:07):
was a great swordsman and you're like, what the hell's happening,
What the hell's happening.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Yeah, and she.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Has gotten the love of the Bainbridge people, which I
did say Cambridge the other way in that last episode
that we did, because I was like, is there such
thing as Mainbridge? I don't know why Cambridge was the
was like, this doesn't sound right anyway back to when
I watched the first one again, because I went back
and watched the first one again. But yeah, like she

(13:33):
is a fantastic character who kept evolving the second the
third one is that maybe that's the other part is
like they really did not write her well as a mother,
and I think I could see Rachel why Rachel Vice
was like this is not how I want to portray
ev because yes, like she's she's just hand ringing the

(13:54):
whole time, chastising Rick to be protect her, and she's
just kind of there and I'm like, eh, yeah, that
kind of missed the mark. I really hope they redo
that type of storyline and seeing like she's not just
babying them and which that's what like Rick's accusation was
of her being and I'm like, in that second movie,
she was not babying him.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah. And another thing we didn't get to. Surprisingly, we
had a lot to say about The Mummy three. Another
thing we didn't really touch on was I kind of
thought it was strange. I get what they were trying
to do. I thought it was strange that in the
last acts Evie was with Lynn, who was Alex's romantic interest,

(14:41):
and they kind of maybe I missed something, but it
kind of felt like they missed a lot of action,
like they were just sitting there because they were near
the bell, and I was just kind of like, wait,
the emperors down there. I don't know what what is this?

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Why where are they going?

Speaker 1 (14:59):
And I don't feel like you're giving me the oh
you get my blessing conversation maybe that they were going for. Yeah,
I thought that was kind of bizarre.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Well maybe because because honestly, I remember thinking that the
death of the Dragon King should have been at the
hands of Lynn or that's what character. I was like,
this is not very satisfying because also she doesn't even
get to see her father. I think it's like a
passing look out of each other. But there's so many
and I get it, again, you have some sort amount
of time, you have a hero movie. You're focusing on

(15:30):
these two dudes and their relationship. But I was like, yeah,
there's a lot to be lost in this one, because again,
her character is just like, yes, I can fight, but
also I'm here mainly just to chastise.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Yeah, the two of them for.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Fighting the whole time, Like it's kind of an odd
character because that's I don't think they try to do it.
I don't know if they did or not. Again, maybe
after maybe it was written after the fact Maria Bello
and they're like, we gotta gotta keep her a minimal
because people are not going to be happy. Yeah, maybe
that's what Maybe that's what they were trying to do,
even though once again Mario Bello has all this training
too become so much bigger. But yeah, so there's a

(16:09):
lot of like that could have happened. I hope for
the third one when we see the development of EV
and the fourth one. I'm sorry there was a third
one and people wanted to forget the fourth one that
we if we get to see EV in her original
intelligent like she was able to solve all of the interpretations,

(16:32):
and she was able to get the curses, and she
was able to be the one that really figured out
between the key between the lights, between the research and
then coming back as like I know the legend of
this because I was a part of it, Like I
hope it only grows to that because she is a.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Fantastic character and her class are amazing.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
I love when people cosplay her.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Love it, Yes I do too, people do it at
Dragon Con. It always makes me happy. Good it looks
oh good, But yeah, I agree, And I also love that.
Not that I don't think we should make a big
deal of these things, but I love that. When I
was a kid, it didn't seem like a big deal
that she was the leader or she was the one

(17:13):
in charge. It was just like, yeah, that's that's who
she is, right, that's how it is. And I was like, yep,
makes sense. So I loved it. I still love it
and interested to see what happens if they do make
this fourth one. Well listeners, if you have any thoughts
