The unknown is often horrible, but in some instances, it is a beautiful space of imagination - or at least, a space before you know how things shake out.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is any and Samantha acome stuff I never
told you production of I Heartradio and welcome to another
edition of Happy Hour. As always, if you choose to
drink or whatever you're choosing to do, please do so responsibly. Samantha,

(00:27):
are you sitting on anything?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
I got some water with additives meaning like electoralized and
such because it's been a rough week. Exact guy to
be hydrated. I have a hydrated queen. Oh what about you?

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Nice? I have some red wine for this one because
I'm excited about this one, and that's kind of the
theme of it, because this is my last half hour
before the first episode of The Last of Us season
two comes out, and I'm so excited. It is my

(01:05):
favorite game. For people who don't know, I think you
probably do. I'm gonna say that'd be a shock but
as possible as possible, and the hype is real for me.
But it's also interesting because I am someone who I'm

(01:30):
so excited that almost the knowing part is like I
like the not knowing. At this point in time, I
can imagine anything I want right Like I can imagine
it goes this way and it's so good, or it
goes this way and it's so good, but once it
comes out, that goes away, and I there there is

(01:54):
kind of a distinction between that versus the unknown of
our hellscape, which I find awful, but like if it's
something like this. I am someone who is very active imagination.
I like thinking about things. I know you and I

(02:15):
differ on this, Samantha, But I used to be somebody who,
like I liked the week per week of a show
coming out because I would just imagine, how is the
next episode gonna go? I do think there's space for
shows that you just binge in some summer better to
like wait. And I was somebody who likes the waiting.

(02:36):
I get really excited by it, and then when it happens,
it's over and you don't know. Then the what if
it's bad one is great. I don't know, but right
now I can imagine all of it. And I know
you've seen me do this. But if I love something

(02:57):
a lot, I'll postpone watching it. Sometimes we'll be doing
a watch party and I'll be like, let's wait ten
more minutes, So let's wait twenty more minutes because I'm
so excited and I don't want to lose that feeling
before it happens, and I am excited. I mean, I'm
very excited to see it, obviously, but it's just such

(03:19):
a strange before you know exactly how it's going to
go down, and I am very excited to share it
with people. I'm very curious how it will go down,
especially for people who haven't played the game. I'm kind

(03:40):
of intrigued how that will go. And there is a
bit of shot and for it. I'm gonna admit it
because it is a painful. It's a painful game, and
I'm gonna imagine it's a painful show. I'm going to
kind of be like, you must go through this with me.

(04:03):
It's true, but I don't know, and I try not to.
I it's impossible for me to avoid. Like I wouldn't
even call them spoilers because obviously they played the game,
but they could do something different in the show.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
I mean, they definitely did lust show, like they took
some things and then like expound upon it that you
didn't you didn't think what you didn't know what's gonna happen?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Oh yeah, and they've cast a character that I'm like,
oh really, they were really mentioned in the show I'm
very curious, so I don't I'm trying to avoid spoilers,
but it's hard for me because the algorithm knows into this. Yeah,
so I don't read the articles, but I see a
lot of headlines, and that's a spoiler, I know, Oh

(04:46):
my gosh. So I've been trying to avoid them, but
I keep running into them. And the honest truth is
I possibly this me having a hope of Shoden for
it is going to come flight meanings. We don't know.
I don't know which I guess would be appropriate. I

(05:09):
do know the first episode is called Future Days and
it's an hour long, and I have a lot of
thoughts about that, but yeah, I mean it's I've said
it before, no one would disagree with me. I think
the second game is a much harder game to adapt
than the first game is. So I don't know how

(05:33):
they're going to do it, and I know they're already
starting the third season, which is part two of the
second season. Really, you know, if it takes them a
long time for it to come out, it's just going
to be difficult. And you'll understand it when we get.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
To the end.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
You'll get what I'm saying. So that's kind of the
thing is I don't think I'm going to be I
feel pretty secure in my love of that game. So
there are some things that I think if it was
really bad, i'd be.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Hurt.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
And by the way, I don't think it's going to
be really bad. I think even if it doesn't, it's
just going to be difficult to adapt. I have faith
in them, but it's just going to be difficult to adapt.
But I'm not going to be super hurt. I think
it'll be good no matter what. But I don't know.
And then hearing like other people react to it, and
I don't want to spoil them, but I also want to.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Be like, wait, I mean, we have protocols in place
for producer Christina Reduce because she is one of those
I don't know wait right, she didn't she had to
play the game. No, she doesn't know what's coming. I
don't know if I have a feeling she might have
gotten some spoilers.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
So she did, but she said that, you know, in
a wonderful producer way, because she didn't know who I
was talking about. She's forgotten all of them.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Well, not just from you, I'm assuming like the way,
like the Internet works and that they're like, oh, this
is the predictions and these and these and these, like
I just saw a funny post about the fact that
the woman who's playing playing Abby Like they're like they
made a whole thing about her showing up in bulletproof
bests to the premiere or something. Yeah, oh is that real?
I thought that was a joke.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
No, it is a joke. Okay.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
The way you looked at me was like, oh, is
that for real?

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Like maybe she does have she had bodyguards, and we'll
we'll talk about that more later. But that is another
thing that I'm like interested to see. It's just how
there's a lot of new characters introduced in the new
season and it kind of shifts a lot. There's a

(07:41):
lot of povs, So I am interested to see how
that plays out. We'll talk about it where we are,
Like we said we're gonna do her reactions. There's only
seven episodes, so I am excited for it to come.
But it just feels like, you know, this is the
moment or I can it can be everything I wanted

(08:01):
to be in my head, and I like to imagine
I like to think that I'm generally we've talked about this.
I'm generally pretty good. It doesn't have to be exact,
it can. It's more of the like truth, the core
of the story and the characters. If you get that right,
then I'm into it. You can add in all kinds
of things, but if you like completely change that, that's

(08:22):
when I'm like, oh, I really don't like this, So
I don't. I don't think they'll do that at all.
It's just I've had this feeling a lot, and there
is a lot of stuff coming out in April actually,
and Or was coming out in April as well, So
I've been feeling this feeling and I just wanted to
to share it because this is, yeah, the last time,

(08:44):
my last happy hour before all I've seen it.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Although so many emotions are gonna come, so I think
we might have to revive our TikTok stuff after that.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Oh no, it's just me crying our whole time. It
is just crying and shouting out random words.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (09:03):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
