Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Anny and Samantha. Welcome to stuff.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
I never told your production I heard you, and welcome
at to another edition of Happy Hour. If you choose
to drink or whatever you're doing, please do so responsibly.
Are you sipping on anything, Samantha?

Speaker 3 (00:27):
So this morning I had to go to an appointment
for my physical therapist. Yes, ye, all, it has happened.
And so there's a coffee shop near there that I like,
a local coffee shop that does now doing Ube latees
and I'm a fan. So I've picked up an Ube
late iced to ube oat milk laate and I'm now

(00:48):
being fancy. Yes, yes, And it's also early morning, so
coffee is needed, not early, but earlier than our typical
recording done.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Yes, that it is.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, so I'm still on coffee. We are endeavoring to
take vacation. So we were recording a lot of stuff
and all kinds of hours, and I think it's going
to happen. We're in the final stretch.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, we're done pretty well. Yeah, this is exciting.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
But today I wanted to talk about Okay, first, I'm
a shameless plug. Okay, I will be speaking at the
PRX Podcast Creator Summit in Atlanta. Oh, and it will
be a panel about food. It's gonna be really fun.
We've already talked about some of the arguments we're going

(01:36):
to start about food.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Limon pepper wet or limmon pepper.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Dry, assuming pie and cake, hot dog being a sandwich.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Oh no, I don't know about that, but just a
way to get people engaged.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
We had a meeting about it yesterday with the other
Fabular speakers and the moderator. So it's the panel is
called Feeding the Culture, Telling Atlanta's Food Stories. It will
be July thirtieth, seven to nine pm is when I'm speaking,
and it's at a Plywood.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Which is where Beer where you used to live West
Side Cute. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
It's free. They do ask that you register, but you
don't have to. It's more so they can kind of
know what the capacity is going to be fun, but yeah,
if you are here and interested, they have a bunch
of other content too. It's over several days. It's all free.
A lot of it is geared towards local talent, speaking

(02:35):
about how to get into podcasting and some other kind
of media stuff. So yeah, come on, if you happen
to be around come on down. They're also it's going
to be interesting because everyone on the panel has different backgrounds.
And one of the things we're going to talk about is,

(02:56):
for a while, it was believed no food podcast could
work because food do such a visual thing or like
a taste based thing.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
So how do you deal with that?

Speaker 2 (03:07):
But all of that being said, plug done. We've talked
about this before, Samantha and I.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'm nervous.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
I'm all nervous. I've never done one later in the
day like that, And I don't know if that's better
or worse because now I'll have all day to kind
of like be worried about it.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Right, But if it.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Was in the morning, then I wouldn't sleep, So I
guess it's whatever.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Not done one in the evening, I thought, or afternoon.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Maybe we did one.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
I think it was in Atlanta that one we went to.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I think was in the afternoon. Also, you've done.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
A panel with the dragon Con really late in the evening.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, I might have had a little liquid courage for
that one. Yes, Yeah, it was like seven p on
a Sunday, So yeah, and for those listening Sundays, the
last night of dragon Con. So that's why yes anyway,
Uh yeah, I don't know. And we've talked before about

(04:12):
how we react to when we get nervous or anxious
doing these things. And now sometimes it's like a blackout situation,
like you don't remember what just happened. For me, I
am rationally not nervous, but the I just have these
physical reactions, so I get like really shaky hands, and
it's frustrating because the more you think about it, the

(04:33):
worse the shake gets. I've had this my entire life.
It runs in my family. Uh and so everyone thinks
you're nervous and then that makes you like more nervous.
So that's that's one thing I would I'm worried about.
But another so I was looking into, you know, women
in public speaking, is there what's going on here? What

(04:55):
is the internet going to tell me? And no surprise,
most of it I found a little annoying. The advice
I found kind of patronizing because it was essentially be
more like a man in your presentation style, like lower
your voice, pitch it like a certain way, very like

(05:17):
when conversations come up around vocal fry stuff like that.
It was a lot of control your voice, stand confidently
or sit confidently, which I guess is good advice. I
mean it is, But it was stuff like that that
I yeah, yeah, okay, but that's what most of what
I found was, even from some places. I was kind
of surprised too. And there were some articles that dissected

(05:42):
why certain women are such good speakers, and they had
some good points. I'm not going to reach that before
this event, and I don't think that's really what I
need to accomplish.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
But they did have some good points.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
It was mostly about like pausing and making sure your
point is getting home and like making sure the emotion
is connecting or something with your audience. And I think
when I'm in my zone, I can do that and
I can make people laugh, so.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
It'll be fine. But I did look into how to
do this.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
I've done that too, which is how I went to
my anti anxiety events.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yes, right, it does do better.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Well, yeah, I'm always nervous to take a medication I've
never taken for so i'd have to test.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
It before I do this. I did find a study.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
There are a couple studies on this, actually, but I
found a recent one called do Women Shy away from
Public Speaking?

Speaker 1 (06:41):
A field experiment?

Speaker 2 (06:42):
By Maria Da Paula Rosetta, Lombardo Valeria Pupo, and Vincenzo Scopa.
And it was a pretty detailed study, so if you
want to check it out, we could come back and
probably do a whole episode on women in public speaking.
But here were some of their main takeaways that I
thought were interesting. Women are more willing to present face

(07:02):
to face, but they are considerably less likely to give
a public presentation. Female aversion to public speaking does not
depend on differences inability, risk aversion, self confidence, and self esteem,
which is the popularly held belief. The aversion to public
speaking greatly reduces for daughters of working women, which seems
to suggest that if they see.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Women doing it, it's not as bad.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
But it was really interesting because it also found that
the men in the study showed no difference between face
to face in public and it not surprisingly to me
said that women, a lot of women were really worried
about public scrutiny around their appearance or how they speak,
all these things we have been taught you will be
judged for right, so that makes sense. That wasn't a surprise,

(07:50):
but it was interesting to have this whole kind of
scientific study of it, and we've also talked about that too,
because I gained a lot of weight during the pandemic,
and so I'm more nervous about how people perceive me
in these public spaces, which is not I have been
taught that, but also I can recognize that that's not

(08:10):
really what's happening usually. So I just got to get
out of my head and talk about food and start
some food fights.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
That's that's it. Perfect.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
They're gonna, yeah, well they're gonna there's food and drinks
after I forgot to mention, so I think there are
going to be wings and pizza, which are two of
the topics.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Well, I don't know. I don't know, but.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
It should be it should be fun and I would
love to meet anyone. A co host Lauren Vogelbaum of
Saver the other show I do, which I should have mentioned,
is why I got asked talk about the food on
this panel will be there a couple of other cool,
really cool people, So come.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
On down and you know I will.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Maybe your presence will help with my nerves, because you've
all been so kind and ask great questions when we
have done this in the past, as s Minty, So yes,
all right. Well, I hope to see some of you there,
