Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm welcome to stuff.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
I never told you a question off by Heart Radio,
and welcome to another edition of Happy Hour. As always,
if you choose to drink or whatever you choose to do,
please do so responsibly, Samantha, or are you doing whatever
you're doing responsibly?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Of course, I'm always responsible. I got my bubbly water
and I'm hyped and ready to go, very caffeinated, very caffulated.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Oh exciting. Okay, well, this is a hyped and ready
to go episode. Like us, this is.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
A tradition that we do around here where I have
a pre dragon Con episode and after dragon Con will
be the post, and hopefully the post will be a
happy one. So around here in Atlanta, there is this

(01:04):
huge convention called dragon Con. If you've listened to the
show for a while, you've heard us talk about it.
But it is a pretty large convention where it takes
place over Labor Day weekend. And I've been going since
I was in college, and it's a whole thing. It's
a big whole thing. And I you know, every year

(01:28):
this time comes around and it's a wonderful, stressful time.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
That's what I'll say.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
About it because I stay in a hotel. It's hosted
in five host hotels, and it's just easier if you
have a costume. Are you cross playing with someone to
stay in the hotel, And so it feels like I'm
going away for a huge trip, even though if without

(01:53):
traffic it would.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Take me ten minutes to get to this hotel.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
With traffic, it's about thirty to forty five minutes.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Oh and then during dragon Con.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
You can't cross anywhere, or actually your car cannot go
anywhere near there because you may ask for my time
hit a Lord of the Rings character.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Everybody's walking around everywhere, and you get distracted because they're
in these amazing costumes.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, I thought they were filming something here because the
costumes were that good.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
It's that's my favorite part of Dragon Con. I think
the costume game. I've never seen it at any other convention.
I think it's amazing. But yeah, it's a whole thing,
and it's been interesting going over time, and I know
that people have.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Been going longer than I have would have, like an
even more. Well, it used to be this.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
It used to be a really like it was big,
but it was mostly it was very niche nerdy like
sci fi and anime stuff like that, and now it's
like anything goes cosplay wise, what you might run into,
which I enjoy, but it's gotten way. It's way bigger

(03:08):
than when I was first going. It was not like this.
But yeah, you get there and then you've got to
check in and it's this whole thing and it takes forever,
and you got to protect your costume pieces because you
don't want them to break. You don't want to forget
all of your supplies to fix your costume if it breaks.
Because there is a cosplay repair station. But this is

(03:30):
in downtown Atlanta, which is like our tourist area. There
are no grocery stores near there. There's a CBS.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
There's a giant CBS, and it.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Because we all go there, it's picked over.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
So basically me and my friends try to bring in
all of our our drinks and all of our snacks
and all of our cosplay repair kids and kits and everything.
So it's just very unwieldy and it's this whole thing
and it takes a while. So the getting in process
stresses me out. Once I get into the hotel, it's

(04:03):
it's lovely it's very lovely, but then you've got to
go get your badge and that can take that can
take a minute.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
And it's really hot right now, so not looking forward
to standing out in the.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Dr and there might be some thunderstorms, Like it's kind
of hurricane.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, yes, it's storming as we record this.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
If you hear any thunder, it's stormy right now.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Unpredictable, it is, it is, And that's a big thing
at Dragon Con. There's a lot of things you have
to take into account, and one is heat. For if
you're going to dress up. I've always been like, we
got to think about the heat. You're also going to
be standing a lot, so you got to think about
your shoes. And I'm much more of a comfort person.

(04:48):
I see some people doing these things and I'm like,
that is fantastic.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
I'm so glad you did it. I would never ever
do that.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
They look gorgeous, but that looks painful.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
That looks painful. That is the price to pay. And
they look great, so good on them. But even when
I was doing the Winter Soldier, like that was a
real pain to get in. It didn't hurt, but it
was like just a whole process and so I'm happy

(05:15):
with my very simple discolue outfit that is generally very
comfortable and very.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
It doesn't get hot.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
The biggest issue is the sequence sometimes rub my skin raw,
but other than that, it's not so bad. I did
want to talk about my friend Katie who's been on
the show. She is going as a SpongeBob character, Smitty
Werbin jaeger Man Jensen, who he if you're like me

(05:45):
and you love SpongeBob, he's the guy with the soda
cap that has the two like bubble things on the
side like a beer. Yeah, and he was number one.
That was his saying, I'm very excited about this. Well,
this is what I love. I love the niche costumes.

(06:05):
I love that people will recognize it someone. I guarantee
you someone will shout at her. He was number one.
It looks great too, It's very fantastic. She also is
the one that makes bracelets to hand out at events
like this, and she has a lot of bracelets. But
I went on the reddit today. I never go on Reddit,

(06:26):
but I was checking something out because I have a
friend who wants to go last minute. I was sharing
to see if anybody has like badges that they can't
go anymore and want to trade or something. People are
excited and I didn't This is new to me, but
I guess people do this thing now where they post
like these cards that show what they're going each day
and each night, so it'll be like, during the day,

(06:48):
I'm going to this character.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
During the night, I'll go with this. And people were
just posting all of that. But other people are making
bracelets and handing them out now.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
So oh, she started a tram. She did.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Another big thing at dragon Con is ribbons, which we've
talked about. I don't think that's unique to dragon Con,
but I've never seen it anywhere else. But this is
where people will hand out ribbons for either nothing at
all or just like they like your costume or standing
in line together or something like that. Like they have
very clever usually names, and people are bringing the ribbon

(07:23):
game this year. I just so many posts about I
was a little taken aback. Oh, guys, they are very excited.
I've only the most ribbons I've ever gotten in one
dragon Con was poor and one of the most from
a company, so I kind of don't feel like that counts.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
They just give it away.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, we ate at that restaurant and they gave us one,
so I was like, okay, sure, just said the restaurant.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
That's true.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
I haven't gotten a rib until recent years, so it's
I'm like.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Another thing I like to do is predict what the
big costumes will be, the big costplays as discussed. I
do think K Pop Demon Hunter.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Will be huge. I'm excited. I want to see those costumes.
You're gonna take tons of pictures from me.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
I think I think that one's gonna be huge. I
think and Doors gonna be really huge. Dancing mon Mathma.
I really hope someone does it, and I think someone will.
You know, I've noticed this in recent years though, like
it gets kind of fragmented after that. I was thinking
maybe Fantastic four would be big, maybe Superma be Thunderbolts.

(08:46):
But I think it gets so fragmented it It used
to be like there were the I could predict, like
the five huge ones.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
I bet Agatha, a little bit of Agatha is going
to come through.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Oh you think it's a good like.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
Who doesn't love being a sexy dark witch?

Speaker 2 (09:02):
That's true.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I just feel like it's gonna be more like there
will be a handful of these things.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
There will be a handful full of lasts to you.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
I hope I see an abbey with a golf club,
but I don't think they're gonna be like big contingents.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Outside of K pop. Demon Hunter was our big animation.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
So mmm, not that I could people come through squid games. Yeah,
maybe people with Squid Games. I feel like Inside Out
too is a huge animated hit, but I don't think
that's gonna be I know people who have dressed as
the emotions from that, but I don't think it's gonna
be a huge Maybe Star Trek. I was thinking maybe
Star Trek because something happened this year with Star Trek

(09:44):
that I was like, Okay, maybe maybe that'll be a
big one. And I feel like Star Wars in general
is gonna be sinners, Oh, sinners probably.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
I think you can have some sinners in there too.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
I think you're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think you're right.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Because I was thinking about there's usually on Thursday night
there's a big horror cosplaying, so I was trying to
think about which ones might be there, so that one,
I wonder if it'll be anybody from What's Her name
Gladys from Weapons.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
I could see that. I could see that it's a movie,
so clearly you don't. But she's got a very she's
she's a very iconic.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
She's striking, so I can see people coming ast her.
But that just came out, so that would be a
last minute, last minute costume.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
But you know what's playing this week? And I sent
my partner a message the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Charles,
like they really relaced it this week. I want to
see it desperately because it's going to throw back some memories.
But I wonder if that's going to bring back some
like love for TV I can turn.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
I've seen them at Dragon Con before, I've seen some
people play them. Another thing is like I was looking
through the guest list of.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Celebrities who are going to celebrities.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, oh that's why I thought there might be star
checks because Simon Peg is there. Oh, but also so
Back to the Future Christopher Lloyd is there.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yes, and then I forgot Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, so sometimes Chrisma Carpenter.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Charisma Carpenter is gonna be there. That's that's cool.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Yeah, So sometimes if there's a celebrity like that, then
a bunch of people will calm as what they're known for.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Several big celebrities that I was like, Wow, okay, Dragon
con stepping it up.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
John Boyega is gonna be there.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah yeah, yeah, So that that definitely could influence it.
I could see a bunch of back to the Future especially,
but we shall see and I'll report back.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Yes, I'm excited. I need the pictures.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I'm so bad at taking pictures.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
We discussed for a meeting with Joey.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
Because like, I don't think Katie's going to get a
lot of pictures either, because she enjoys her time perfectly.
Is Ramsey old coworker? Is he good with pictures? I
think he's good with pictures.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Right, he's better than me.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
I him. I need you to take me to send
you every two hour reminder. Yeah, I mean I take
it today.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
The problem is I always have my phone in my boot.
It's true, but I do have a fanny pack.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
I bought a fanny pack last year that matches the
Disco Luke outfit.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
So maybe I will bring that.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
It will be way easier than the boot. Yeah, that's
a whole thing. Yeah, I need to check my lightsaber.
I haven't fixed my costume yet, and it's rapidly approaching.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
That's a panic coming in.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yeah, just a little.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
There was a post on the reddit that was like, yes,
it's coming, It's really coming, but don't freak out.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
It's going to be fun and you're going to be fine.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
You're gonna be okay.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah, I mean, unfortunately, that is another thing I think
about every Dragon con is both gun violence and illness.
And there is another wave of COVID happening right now.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yes, so gotta think about these things.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
Oh, hopefully all will go well and I will report
back the wondrous costumes I see and the wonderful time
I have. Well in the meantime, listeners, please let us
know if you have any predictions for what will be
a lot of cosplay that I see. Are if you've

(13:31):
been to a convention recently, because I was like, I
could just look what other conventions are.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Doing and I like to guess.
