Speaker 1 (00:00):
H Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Welcome to stuff I never told you protection of by
Heart radio.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
And welcome to another happy hour where I talk about birthdays.
But this is not sad sad birthday. This is need
your help birthday. I've done that a lot too, don't
I anyway? Any it's happy or do you have anything
you saiding on to?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
I have something from my birthday. My mom always buys
me wine, so this is a new wine.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
But I also have.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Water keeping it, keeping it well. I am drinking your
least favorite drink doctor paper zero with cream soda. Not
a sponsor.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah, I don't know if that's my least favorite one.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
But in general, right.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I've never gone out beyond that was enough for me.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Okay, fair enough, fair enough. But all that to say,
these are not sponsors. That what we are talking about.
We are not currently sponsored by any of these things,
but they want to sponsor to us, like all of us.
Don't call me, Yeah, people email yeah as people, Yes,
they're apparently they do phone calls sometimes anyway. With that, yeah,
(01:21):
if you're doing anything happy hour ish, do so responsibly.
We love you. Take care of yourself. So with that, yes,
my birthday is coming up. It is forty fifth. Yeah,
technically I think this is when the midlife crisis thing
is supposed to hit. I mean anytime in this era,
but this is like that timeframe. And I went back
and forth because it's been a rough year I think
for everyone, a rough decade, let's just be real, honest.
(01:45):
But some of that I also includes my fear of
traveling right now. In fact, I had just had an
incident in which I was driving from Georgia to South
Carolina and I got tailed by an unmarked cop car.
And I don't know if you know anything about what's
happening in the state of Georgia, but recently there was
an ice raid in a Hyundai factory with a lot
(02:07):
of South Korean people here on visas work visas, trying
to open up a plant, and they all got detained.
And one of the things that's concerning about this detainment
is that they're not just deporting back to their countries,
are actually taking them in almost in like inserting them
into labor camps. It seems I don't understand it. They're
going to Uganda why because they got a contract there
(02:30):
confusion anyway, with all of that so when I had
someone follow me, I actually was very scared because they
really have no reasons, and the Supreme Court just allowed
for essentially profiling to detain anyone based on race. So
I know that's saying this and very like not educated form,
(02:53):
but essentially that was what it boils down to. And
I called my partner to make sure I had my
location on because I really scared because he the way
you know, when someone went a cop or law enforcement
is trying to check you and see if you had
done anything illegal. They get right on you and then
they ease off. They followed me for a minute, and
it scared me. When they finally let off after I
had had moment, I started crying in the car because
(03:15):
this is my fear of carrying my passport around. Make
sure I have all my things up to date in
that I have my location on because they are detaining citizens.
They are detaining Green card holders who are permanent residents
South Koreans, and they've had few of those going through
and visa holders without caring about due process. So all
of that to say is I've been really really hard
(03:37):
like resident in traveling. Just driving outside of Atlanta has
really scared me, I'm on edge constantly. I said it
was going to be happy ish, but it got dark.
But that's a whole different conversation. But with that, I've
decided I don't want that to stop me from actually
enjoying my birthday or trying to do something that's a
little outside of just staying home because it's been it's
(03:58):
been hard. So one of our favorite places we talked
about it constantly is going to New York. However, we
have not gone outside of New York City, and I'm
a little scared because I've heard outside of New York
City is kind of like outside of Atlanta, where you
do have a lot of conservative areas. Same thing with
like Portland, same thing with Seattle. So a lot of
these areas are really blue, but then you go outside
(04:20):
of it, it's really really red. But supposedly the Adirondacks
are some of the most beautiful areas to go to,
especially during fall, and I decided to really want to
go for a hike. I really would like to enjoy
some mountains with some lakes, good apple, good food, all
of that. So I'm gonna do that this year. Annie,
We're making an adventure. I'm even doing a train ride.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Nice. I love a good train ride.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, So we're gonna drive. We're gonna take a train
from New York City to the Adirondacks to the Albany area,
and then we're going to pick up a car hopefully
and drive through even more mountains to see some foliage.
Yeah yeah, I just kidding. I'm so excited about this trip.
(05:09):
But we know nothing of this area. I don't know
anybody from this area. Do we know anybody any from
this area?
Speaker 2 (05:15):
I had a friend who grew up there, but our
friendship has fraid.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Okay, so it's not friends that I can call do
So I need suggestions. Where should we go, what should
we see? How far we should go? Restaurants that needs
to be visited. I love a good soft serve. I
(05:41):
love a good doughnut. I love fruits, so I love
some apples. All of those things are a must. So
we are trying to get as many suggestions. So, like
my plan right now is we found a cute little
area in Lake Placid and trying to So that's kind
of far from the Albany station, so it's gonna be
a two drive up. But in that area, it feels
(06:02):
like it's kind of middle ground ish to all of
the sites, and we want to see all the k villages.
I want my Hallmark movie without the bookstore coffee shop
owner thing because I'm bringing my own partner.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
You don't need that part.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
I didn't go to high school there, so I'm not
meeting any high school sweethearts. So we good on that part.
We good on the romance parts. We just need all
of the scenery, all of that. I like. All of
the pictures are gorgeous, eighty gorgeous, even the snow. I
don't want to be able to share. I think we're
done with the December trips to New York after being
like our flight's canceled and having to stay so long.
(06:40):
I'm like, eh, no more Christmas. We good, But we're
going to go in that area and I want to
see like the scenery that I see and all the
social media's I hope it's not a lie. The peak
season is first apparently like like second week of October,
so we might miss a little bit, but I think
we're going to see good sites and it's gonna be
(07:01):
nice and brisk. Yeah, you know, I need to wear.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
That's Oh how far are you going to hike.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Well, I so the last this is the thing about me.
I feel like I'm the common denominator because I used
to go hiking every weekend for like several years. That
was kind of our stress relief when I was in
social work, and I would do it with coworkers and
we would go for like one or two hour hikes,
and then once a month we would do big hikes,
so we would get on the Appalachian Trail do parts
of income back. So we would do big hikes, but
(07:33):
my intent was always like three or four hours, okay, medium,
moderate at most, and then it ended up being the
most difficult. We did that in mountaineer, Like I didn't
know that's what we were doing, because we would past
the point of no return and I was like, oh,
we were at the top of the mountain. And at
one point I asked teenagers how much further do I
(07:53):
have for this one point? And they laughed at us
because they also looked like they were not prepared. So
we didn't bring enough water, we didn't bring enough snacks.
This is kind of one of those moments. But we
made it. But they're like, you're actually almost there, so
we just keep going it just happened to be straight
up on tumbling rocks. Yeah, so I was like, son
of Like. There was a lot of cursing mm hmm,
(08:16):
which is what happens a lot. I almost died a
couple of times because we went the wrong way on
Blacktop Mountain and we did it in snow, to the
point that the locals saw us and looked at our
shoes and that you're not making it like they made
fun of us. And I'm from North Georgia, so I
shouldn't have. But I'd never I never took advantage of
(08:37):
the mountains when I lived there, did you? Oh? Yeah?
See is it right?
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Big hiker? And she had like she has that like
map like the guide books.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
That would pay money for it because she's.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Handwritten how to do it?
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yeah, where to stop? Where are the views? Have the
mark here? Stop here for a snack?
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yes, if you.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Have a car with a low like she would write
in a white damage your car.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Just wow.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah. Yeah. And so it was great.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
She was fantastic and she took me all over and
I'm really lucky sa that she did, because I had
a great Time's all kinds of things.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
I feel like as a kid I would have not
wanted to do that because I was super like, I
want to read it's a cup of tea that I
never drank, so I would yeah, like it was a
hot cup of tea type of thing. But yeah, like
I didn't do that when I was here, Like we
would do misadventures in the like small town area, but
(09:36):
not necessarily like in the woods, in the woods, I
mean now and then I did get lost, but we
also had the realization of bears, bobcats, and snakes, yeah,
which I feel like a lot of city folks don't understand.
I kind of have forgotten about until I get into
that situation. I'm like, oh yeah, mm hmm. And then
also wild hogs, which they are the ones more likely
to kill you.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Oh yeah, oh yeah. I have so many pictures of
me just being like, look at the snake. I wonder
how dangerous it is. Dangerous it is, and I just
took a picture, like hopefully.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
It's fine, don't do this. But yeah, So I'm really
excited and I really am wanting to do some really
good adventures, but I want local recommendations. This is so
brand new and we only have well we're spending two
nights in two and a half days, like outside of
the travel, and I'll be there on my actual birthday.
(10:28):
So I want to be do something special. But I like,
I loved going to Seattle because we got to do
both Seattle stuff and then Mount Rainier stuff like that
type of like duality is what I want, which is
like we get to spend a couple of days in
New York and so have I already made reservations for
a macasse? Yes, I have excellent of course day one
(10:51):
day one we will be having that. But like also
being able to go for a hike and being in
an area that's different, The environment is different for me,
the trees are different for me, like being able to
see that. I'm really excited. So if y'all have recommendations,
if you think I definitely need to do this or
eat this or be a part of this, let me know.
(11:13):
Because again we're going to have a car for a
couple of days, so driving about is not a problem.
I will say I have gotten a couple of tickets
for things that I did not realize were roles in
some of these other states. So if you have advice
for me, not like see I got I got a
warning because we were in the bustling too long, didn't
know it was a bustling, was confused why people weren't
(11:33):
driving in it.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
You were like, ooh yeah, okay, silly people's.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
And not bead bad. So all of that is says,
of course, we will be looking this stuff up. Don't
get me wrong. But if you're like, hey, this is
one of the things first things I learned, don't do this.
Give me that too, because I need all of the
good suggestions.
