Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. Lock this stuff. I
never told you protection if I hurt you.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
And today we have another classic for you that I
am once again bringing one back.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I don't normally bring back.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
So soon, but uh and or season two, the final
season just came out. I haven't seen it, and I
feel like everyone around me has. And I don't know
how to feel about this. And I was gonna watch it.
I had a whole block set aside, and then it
got My block got destroyed, Samantha, So I don't know,
(00:49):
and I'll get.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
To like you actually showed and demonstrated to me how
it got destroyed. Yeah, by the way, it looks like
if you were playing, like have you ever don't break
the ice?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yes, it looks like you're doing.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I was thinking of a Mario Party game where you
have to break the blocks, which, by the way, I
have won two games a Mario Party recently. So but anyway,
I know super producer Christina has seen it.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I have seen.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
The kind of viral dance scene of mon Mothma kind
of getting sloppy drunk and dancing, And in fact, for
Star Wars Day, as we were getting ready, we had
this on repeat for an hour, so I have seen
(01:39):
that now. I know. She was a very well loved
character this season, which I'm a big fan of, because
she had like we talked about in this episode. She's
in Return of the Jedi for like a minute, She's
in a bunch of the other stuff legends, all of that,
but I'm glad she had her moment and let this
(02:00):
woman dance. It was a poor I know the event
and why she was dancing like this. So we're bringing
back this classic mon matha.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Please enjoy.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha, and welcome to Stefan
Never told You Protection of iHeart Radio, and welcome to
another sub sub sub whatever sub segment of a fictional women.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Around the world.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
We are due to this month because Samantha is taking
the lead on a very big project.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
And everything I do as an extra slow.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
No, it's a lot that you're working on and it
should be coming out soon.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
But I have eight tabs open for this one episode.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, it's a lot, everybody, and that stresses me out
because I don't know if I've ever said this, but
I don't like having too many tabs open. Yeah, So
every time Samantha tells me something like that. It's like,
I'm like fanning my face in panic growing.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
It's only growing because it has become a like a
mini series. Has something to do with this episode. It's
become a mini series. Try to get it in. But
there's so many questions and so many things I want.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
To talk about.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
M M.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Y'all. Yeah, but yes, and thank you for taking those.
But at the same time, you're like, I need to
do two Star Wars stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, I'm very very excited. It actually is related to
what you're working on. Okay, so today we are talking
about mod Mathma. But because as we're recording this, as
it is a big it's a big recording day, it's
life day also, which is Star Wars Holiday. I do
have some updates I want to put in here. Okay,
some Star Wars updates because mom Mathma, if you don't know,
it is from Star Wars.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Which I've just figured out.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Mom Matha is that the monotone faced woman in the
original trilogies.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Returned the Jedi. Oh yes, okay, all.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Right, where she kind of talks very slowly. Yes, okay, okay,
so that's her. Oh I thought that when I was Okay.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
So I'm only at the beginning of this indoor, so okay,
all right, keep going.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Wow, I just got so excited and click.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Okay, So here's some Star Wars updates. Number one.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
I listened to the MPR radio dramas. I've been putting
this off because they're fifteen hours long combined. They are
beautiful and wonderful and fun and they answered so many
questions that you've asked.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Sabantha, Okay, there's like.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
There's a lot more grieving in the radio dramas. Oh wow,
I really really recommend them.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
I loved it. I loved them.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Mark Hampill's in it is Anthony Daniels. Yeah, he's in
Mark Hampill's in the first two. He's not in Return
of the Jedi. But they're they're really fun. I liked
them a lot. Also, go check out our Toxic Masculinity
and Mandalorian episode that we did.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
But a lot of you wrote.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
In with some thoughts about that, which I love and
I suspected what happened, and we are going to read
some of those messages. We have a listener mail episode
coming up, so if you have any listener mail you
want us to read please start sending those in because
we're going to record that pretty soon. I did want
to clarify a couple of things. Number One, I don't
think I specified this, but the Clones, like as in
(05:27):
the Clone Wars, are a lot of the people you
see in the show, they aren't necessarily Mandalorians. Also, I
totally forgot about this, and I can't believe I didn't
put it in here because it's like one of my
favorite things to talk about, because a lot of people
bring up, you know, the parallels between Darth Vader and
the Mandalorian, as in the Mandalorian from the show in
(05:50):
their whole mass thing, because Darth Vader has, you know,
a mask he doesn't take off until the end when
he wants to look upon you with my own eyes,
with Luke to see his son with his own eyes,
and Mandalorian has that in season two where he takes
his mask off for Grogu. But I think there's a
kind of interesting difference here in that Darth Vader was painted,
(06:13):
Darth Vader was jilly, and he took his mask off,
and that was seen as like an act of redemption,
a step forward, kind of shedding that like stoicism toxic masculinity,
villainous mask. And I would say, like when the Mandalorian
did it, there is a lot of religious trauma involved,
but it was supposed I felt like it was supposed
(06:33):
to be kind of a step forward for him as well.
It doesn't come without all these other dramatic things. And
if that's his choice, and that's his you know, religion, Gosh,
we don't have time.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
To go into that right now. But if it is,
then that's fine.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
But I think that one of the things I was
trying to make the point of is that when these
men told me, they.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Saw that as a bad thing.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
That's what I found really fascinating that he took off
his mask, right, And then I will say, also, so
fan fiction the Mandalorian and fan fiction is mostly written
by women or marginalized people. Right when the Mandalorian takes
off his helmet. That is like I mean, if I
had Bingo a Bingo card, which I actually do. A
(07:16):
fan fiction is Star Wars fan fiction that happens all
the time, and it's painted in a very positive flight.
So I find that really interesting too. And then I
didn't talk about this, but I found this essay the
other day about the whole subversive nature of the end
of Return of the Jedi, which is what I keep saying.
And when he throws away, when Luke throws away his lightsaber,
that's the powerful moment. When he defeats Darth Vader physically
(07:38):
in combat, that is a weakness and he failed. And
that's so different than what a lot of our superhero
movies are. And in fact, they found a whole essay
about the Winter Soldier and how the ending of that
when Captain America refuses to fight his friend, the Winter Soldier,
and they tied that directly to the fact that he
has seen.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Star Wars because at the beginning he.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Answers a little yes right, yes, yes, And it's not
just me thinking this, but related to this episode, and
I know a lot of you are listening this and
they're like, oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
But related to this episode, that whole idea of the
Mandalorian culture of you know, you win the Dark Saber
via combat and usually via killing somebody else. Setene Kreese,
who we talked about, we have another fictional Women Around
the World episode on she was trying to make a
more pacifist Mandalorian culture and there you can argue about
(08:33):
that all you want, but kind of the message in it,
because she felt she was assassinated and then everything went
to hell was disarmament equals ruin And that is related
to Mon Mathma, who were talking about today, and I
find that very interesting.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
But yeah, now I'm.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Also going to have to talk about how traditional gender
roles manifest and pop media and fan fiction, but that's
for another day. I can't wait to read some of
these messages. I'm so excited. But all right, those are
my updates for now.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Okay, okay, okay, I'm then Now we are going to talk.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
About mod Mathma, and there are going to be some
spoilers for and or which as we speak. The season
finale is next week, so I haven't seen it yet,
but I have a suspicion I know what's going to
happen with Mon Mathma at least, but I'm not going
to talk too much about that. I'll say I always
loved mon Mathma in the original trilogy as a kid.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
She is in it.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
She is the one that says many Bothams died to
get us this information in Return of the Jedi. A
part of it could be the fact that she was
like one of three women in the movies. She's barely
in it, but I did love her whole look. I
loved her whole vibe. She's clearly important, she's a leader,
and while she's calm and poised in the face of
(10:05):
possible total annihilation, she doesn't hide her emotion. It was
another instance like where Leya, where it's clear that Leyah
and mon Mathma demand respect, that they can control room,
and mon Matha is not questioned for one second because
of her gender. She is briefly in episode three Revenge
(10:26):
of the Sith and in a very important deleted scenes.
It's one of the deleted scenes where I'm like, I
was like, you could have.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Cut some other things out. I think this one should
have been in there.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
But she was played by Genevieve O'Reilly, who plays her
in and Or In that scene that got cut, it's
just made very clear that she's a founding member of
the Rebellion and the Alliance, which we do see playing
out in and Or Now. She was in Rogue One
as well, also played by O'Reilly. She was featured in
the animated series the animated series The Clone Wars, voiced
(10:56):
by Kath Souci, and Rebels voiced by O'Reilly.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
But yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
She was first introduced in the nineteen eighty three film
Returned the Jedi. She was played by Caroline Blackiston, and
Blackiston put all kinds of thought into the role, even
though she often joked she was only in the movie
for twenty six and a half seconds, but apparently they
like changed the script right when she was walking in, and.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
She didn't really know what edy of it meant, like
what is a Bothain? Who knows?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
So she decided to portray this character as a moon
mother because she thought mon Mathma sounded kind of like
moon mother and there's a lot of it takes place
on a moon that she was going for very cool
and collected because of that, and she wrote George Lucas
about playing a young mon Mathma's grandmother.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
But never got a response.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
But seems genuinely delighted at how much the character has
taken off. It's really cute to read her kind of like, wow,
people really people really liked it.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Yeah, but yes.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I'm getting ahead of myself. Standard Star Wars disclaimer. There
is canon, which is Disney currently Disney owned. There is Legends,
also called Extended Universe, which was pre Disney no longer canon,
but they take a lot of stuff from that and
make it Disney canon, which is very confusing. I'm going
(12:23):
to try to make it make sense. But the Wikipedia
entry on this character even came with this warning quote
Lucasfilm has not established a cohesive timeline regarding this subject.
Editor discretion is advised. You know, I know, I know, honestly,
(12:44):
thank you. All right, So let's start with what is
currently canon. But because I did grow up with legends,
we are going to talk about that too, and there
are a lot of similarities. Man Mathma is a human
woman born Onlla, and she got into politics at a
young age, going on to represent her home planet in
the Galactic Senate prior to the Old Republic's fall. If
(13:08):
you don't know about Chandrilla, this is kind of telling
you like she's a core worlder.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
She probably is pretty well off.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
But a headline when she was elected read Wizard teen
senator takes on Corossant, so she was one of the
youngest senators ever elected. She did have a hot girl
summer before that, where she rebeled against her parents. She
learned how to play smash ball, she fell in love
decided to become a story and instead of playing a
(13:36):
role in her family's political dynasty. But Summer's got it
in some time, and so she ended up marrying parn
Fertha at sixteen, which is pretty much kind of a
politically arranged marriage. And they moved to Corrossant, which is
the big city planet if you don't know where the
Imperial center is, and she became a senator during the
(13:59):
Clone Wars. She was a vocal supporter of peace and democracy.
She found like minded folks like Senator Bail Organa of Alderon,
who's Leyah's adopted father, and Padme Almidala, Leah and Luke's
biological mom.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Amongst others.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Though at first, man Mathma was not impressed with Amidala
after her vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum that
put Palpatine in power, because man Mathma thought it showed
that pad May put her the needs of her home
planet above the needs of the galaxy. But Amidala, I
keep switching back. Amadala and Padme the same person. Pad
(14:36):
May later earned her respect, though they never really became
close friends. I think they could have, but you know,
Padme died and everything they worked together to try to
provide diplomatic solutions to the war, believing the war was
a threat to democracy. And this is between the separatist
the Clone wars essentially, and they were fiercely opposed by
(14:57):
militaristic sectors and corporation. Their outspokenness against the war meant
that their initiatives often failed and it placed them in
physical danger. One of Mathma's fellow senators and supporters was murdered.
He's poisoned. Mathma was also on the council that determined
(15:18):
the fate of Ahsoka Tano after she was falsely accused
of the murder of sixth Jedi, and for more on
that you can check out.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Our Ahsoka episode.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Mathma, Organa and Amadala petitioned Chancellor Palpatine aka the Emperor
aka the Sith Lord who manufactured and puppeted the whole war,
to rescind his executive wartime powers, but he instead.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Claimed that the Jedi war traders.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
And had almost all of them killed, enslaved the Clones,
and he proclaimed that the Republic was now the Galactic
Empire and guess what he was in charge? And now also,
I have a terrifying and horrifying enforced her name Darth Vader.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
Mysterious.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Mathma and Organa attended Padme's funeral together and she was
arrested alongside Organa for colluding with the Jedi, but both
were freed after publicly declaring their loyalty to the Empire.
So when the Republic fell and was replaced with the
Galactic Empire, she Man Mathma held onto her seat, secretly
(16:26):
working with Senator Organa and luthen Rail, who's in Andor,
to topple the fascist regime, planting seeds of the rebellion.
She didn't think the Empire would disband the Senate because
their abilities and powers had already been so limited, so
she was like, we're kind of a useless Why are
they going to go through the the effort of disbanding
(16:47):
us because they've already limited us so much. She also
believed that Palpatine had expertly maneuvered the war to lead
to this, so she was pretty sure he was in
the mastermind behind the whole thing. However, her husband was
a strong supporter of the Empire, and her daughter resented
how much she poured into her work and that she
might be married off. She's also an and Or and
(17:10):
in Legends, and I know what happens in Legends, and
I'm wondering what they're going to do in and Or,
but we'll see. Mathma also served as a mentor for
Leah Leah, We're gonna counseling her before she took her
own Senate seat and proudly watching, and she became a
leader in the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire. She encouraged
Leah in collecting evidence of the Emperor's misdeeds to correct
(17:33):
the false history he was painting after his fall, and
we saw a lot of the like savvy maneuvering and
sacrifices Mathma had to make for the Alliance Throughout and Or,
especially concerning securing credit flow. Mathma continued to be a
vocal detractor of the Empire as safely as she could be,
(17:53):
and even the Emperor himself. She publicly denounced him and
left the Senate after the Gorman massacre and was labeled
to trade her and put on the Empire's most wanted list.
The Ghost Crew from Rebels the Show got her out
of there before she could be arrested, and she officially
founded the Alliance to restore the Republic.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
I don't know what's going on in and Or.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
But whatever most of the rebels, I'll find out soon.
Most of the rebels joined up, but not all, including
Sagerera and the like, who caused her a lot of
problems because basically he was seen as more militant and extreme.
I would argue, yeah, he is more militant and extreme,
and she was very pragmatic about timing and resources. We
(18:37):
see this depicted an and or two with her cousin
val show that.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Was a spoiler. Oh well, whoops.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Was involved in a leadership position of several Alliance operations
depicted in Rebels in the year zero bby Are. Before
the Battle of Yavon, which is a New Hope guest Star,
she called for the recruitment of jin Urso and this
is where the events of Rogue one play out, where
a lot of folks died to get the death Star
plans to the Alliance. When Aldron was destroyed, she became
(19:22):
the last remaining original leader of the Alliance and even
wrote a surrender speech to the Emperor before she learned
the Rebels survived on Yavon and destroyed the Dustar. Though
she had contingency plans to ensure the Alliance's survival, but
she was like, if this.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Doesn't go our way, then I'm going to have to surrender.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
She made several difficult decisions like that during her time,
including not devoting resources to rescue Luke Skywalker after he
was captured on his mission by Grachis. Thought she encourages
Leah to pursue love. She approves of her mission to
save Han Solo, and also confides intelligence that the Emperor
has a second death Star and intends to destroy any
(20:03):
planet that houses rebellion, including Mathma's home planet of Chandrilla,
and she expressed concern that Leah was putting herself at
too great a risk by volunteering for that last mission,
but Oleah was like, Nope, got to do it.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
She helped lead the Alliance during the.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Galactic Civil War, including when she pops up during Return
of the Jedi. When the Empire was defeated, man Mathma
became the new Republic's first Chancellor. She oversaw the passing
of the Military Disarmament Act and the stripping of the
Chancellor's emergency wartime powers, things that later helped the First
Order rise. So that's what I met at the top
(20:41):
when People sometimes blame her for the First Order's rise
because she was taking away the weapons, but also like, oh, gosh,
I don't have time to get into a political argument
right now. When man Mavma left office, factions were engaged
in fierce debate about the government's future, and during her
(21:02):
tenure she still had these difficult decisions and compromises to make,
including ones she would have protested as a senator.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
That's sort of her her war inner war. During this time,
her inner conflict.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
She and Leah frequently disagreed, and Mathma always was pushing
for pragmatism. Lots of political machination, spying, making of deals happened.
She supported Leah publicly. When her parentage was revealed, the
First Order was like, oh guess what her dad is
Darth Vader, and man Mathma supported her. Mam Mathma listened
(21:35):
to her constituents and constantly worried about becoming the next Palpatine.
All right, So that's sort of where we are with canon.
I want to very briefly go over legends, Okay, So
it's pretty similar. In legends, she was a bit more
open in her defiance at the Empire. During her time
in the Senate. In it, she did tutor Leia. She
had to flee from the Empire after the Empire grew
(21:57):
tired of her opposition. She was betrayed and arrested by
Darth s Bab, but later escaped and continued to lead
the Alliance. She helped her nephew become an imperial spy,
which was really intense storyline. When the Organas were killed,
Mathma was accused of trying to usurp power in the
Alliance and became and become the next Palpatine.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
That she proved her dedication to democracy.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
She led that Return of the Jedi meeting even after
learning about the death of her son just before. After
the Battle of Vandor, she became the Chief of State
of the new Republic, a position she held for eleven years,
and she led the new government through multiple military threats.
She officiated Leah in Hans's wedding, and she was succeeded
(22:41):
by Leah Organa, and she died peacefully in her sleep,
even though she had been poisoned. It was like this
poison they couldn't get rid of, so she had kind
of this long fight with illness, but she died peacefully.
She did serve again temporarily when Leah had to go
off and rescue her brother and apparently sent Luke on
a mission to find a wife.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
I don't remember that, but I believe it happened.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
She was a guest of honor at Luca Mara Jade's wedding,
and an important new Republic ship was named after her,
So she did a lot.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
She was very important. She was pivotal to this whole thing.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
And O'Reilly, the actress who's playing her, said of the character,
you don't have to look too far, no matter which
profession you work in to see women who are trying
to affect change from within. I looked to different female
leaders around the world, and sadly we don't really have
enough of them.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
Still.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Often they are lonely voices or voices that others are
trying to silence. I see a correlation with those voices
and with Mon, and with Mon's voice. For me, I
didn't have to look too far to see the women
that I believe can be reflected in Mon's fight. I
recognized her, I recognized her fights. I want to stand
up for her as a character because I think we
can all recognize her. No, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Her husband is a bad guy. I'm not quite there.
I just got to introduced to him.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Oh well he's yeah, he's not great. I'll have that.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Sorry for any accidental spoilers in there, And again I
appreciate you, Samantha for just letting me go like.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Plows, I'm down.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
The fact that I was like, oh, that's her.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Was the only I have. Yeah, yes, it is funny.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
And she had like twenty six seconds in that movie
and we were all like, but what about her though?
Speaker 1 (24:27):
I want to know all about her.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
She's very regal. She is quite regal. She's quite regal.
And I love her fashion in the show. Yeah, whoever's
doing the wardrobing is top notch gorgeous.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
So she actually portrayed the same the actress that plays
on Mathma and or portrayed it in the secondary movies.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
I don't know they are.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Why are they not the originals of the she in
the prequel trilogy? Yeah, oh, the prequels. She was in
Revenge of the Sith, and she was in I Rebels
as a voice and Brogue one.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
Yeah, okay, did they do the digital imaging on her
in the prequels because it looked a lot like her.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
I mean, sure, okay, no, no, a lot like the original.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
I'm sorry, Oh maybe, uh, because she's like I think
in Revenge of the Cysts, she's in the background, you
barely see her.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
Wait, she was a Rogue One as well?
Speaker 3 (25:23):
Right?
Speaker 4 (25:24):
Yes, so is that where they did a digital face
on her?
Speaker 1 (25:28):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
It looked like it because it looked like we were
all I feel like we talked about that.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
Anyway. I hate that movie. Rogue One too.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Sad for some means kind of tough too. I gotta say,
oh no.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
No, it's not it's okay, it's okay.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
Anyway, we come back, come in whatever.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Yeah, whatever, We'll come back and convene on this. But
