Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello the Internet, and welcome to this episode of Better
Late Than Trender. The name is courtesy of Johnny Davis.
Thank you for the short show title, Spice, and I'm
thrilled to be joined by super producer Justin Connor. Do
let me out the layer again, I'm batch out. Yeah.
I think the Better Late Than Trender was in response.

(00:23):
It was in the thread with people offering akas for you.
Oh you're your host on Monday. Yeah, I'm so bad
at checking that. Guys. I'm doing my best. I will
do right by you. I appreciate all the messages. I
mean yeah, all right. So some things that are trending
on this Friday afternoon. Lance Reddick, actor from The Wire

(00:44):
John Wick, apparently a very accomplished musician, was found dead
this morning. And yeah, ri Ip man he was. He's
so great in The Wire. Um, just one of the
best wearers of a suit that I've ever witnessed, and
just yeah, sophistication is what comes to mind. Yeah, I

(01:05):
think this guy, he's so good, very prestigious, like posturing
that he had a man. Yeah, it was impeccable and
I loved his role in John Wick, who He's got
such quiet intensity, That's my favorite two descriptive words of
an actor. Just a quiet intensity he personifies that. Yeah,

(01:28):
so very sad to see him go, but a lot
of nice words pouring in for him, and you know
he held it down. He was like one of the
great character actors who you know, you you recognize anywhere
and you're like, hell, yeah, that guy. I have to
be honest that, Like, I don't think I knew his
name was Lance Reddick because when someone was like, oh no,

(01:50):
lance Reddick passed away, I thought they were like talking
about an X Games athlete or something, because that name
just for whatever is And that's how it hit my brain.
Sounds like he fucking shreds And who were we to
say that he didn't her? Yeah, you know, he could
have been putting that NAR down, you know, well, speaking
of putting the NAR down. Gwyneth Paltrow Queen, Uh no

(02:12):
she video yeah, ice Queen. So she was in a
video podcast where, um, she was being interviewed about her
day to day diet. There is some controversy as to
whether she was properly framing it as a specialized diet,

(02:33):
but she the diet is just like, so I have
a nice coffee in the morning so that my blood
sugar doesn't spike. Uh. And then oh, I like to
just indulge in a nice bone broth for lunch and
whiff of a cherry skin. Yeah, so I can get
that little handsome flavor. And in the evening, I do

(02:55):
a nice intermittent fast. That is what so like it's
sounds it all sounds like fasting to me. First of all. Um,
the way she just the way she pronounces intermittent fast
sounds to me like the way I would talk about
a hamburger that I particularly like. But she's just like,
oh yeah, nice juicy intermittent fast, and I really like

(03:16):
dig into that. Um. And then it's like all a
sort of vegetables for dinner type thing. Yeah. And she's
doing this while looking like very emaciated, and so a
lot of people came through them were like, look, she
was part of the you know generation that made it
very fashionable in the early two thousands to just have

(03:39):
an eating disorder essentially just to like be emaciated. Yeah
again yeah, and you know, I The thing is, she
claims that this is a specialized diet because her and
her doctor have been working together to get her long
COVID symptoms under control, and I may have been able

(03:59):
to buy this except for I just can't like it's
it's the fact that I mean, super producer Becca pointed
out before we started this that all of these products
she's listing are essentially like on her website that she's
aware of how much power she has. And I'm really
sick and tired of celebrities playing coy with how much
influence they have. And I know that living this life

(04:22):
every day, you might forget a time or two, like
you mentioned a word and you're not expecting a huge,
you know, think piece to be written about it. But
you know how closely tied your brand is to a
quote unquote health lifestyle that you're trying to promote. And
this is not healthy by anyone's measure. I can't imagine

(04:44):
that doctor approved this and then wanted you to co
sign this on air, like if they did, they are unscrupulous,
Like I just don't know if I mean, especially with
the fact that she has consistent meetups with fans who
are legitimately sick of fans. They're not just like, oh, okay,
this person's an expert in dietary needs and that she's

(05:07):
giving me information that's useful. It's they're like, oh, when
it did it, I'm I'm bet let's go big personality. Yeah, yeah,
I mean she has a lifestyle brand that sells like
bone broth and yes, you know a lot of the
things that contribute to the sort of lifestyle that she's
talking about. And yeah, So the person who kind of

(05:28):
got the attention started on this is I put the
I am an American on TikTok uh. She she said
why two K was a horror show of who could
starve themselves in the most expensive ways? Um, and that
that was real man, Like there's there's a real period
where like every famous person seemed to be trying to

(05:52):
look like they hadn't eaten in days and they just
crawled their way out of a fucking grave. Yeah, and
it does feel like that's coming back, Like it feels
like that is I don't know. There there's all like
a shot that people take that just suppresses their appetite,
and a lot of people are talking about like various
celebrities who may or may not be taking that um.

(06:15):
And then there's you know these IV companies who are like,
well we'll give you access to IV delivered nutrition while
you starve yourself. And yeah again just like competition to
starve yourself in the most expensive way. Um not healthy
food is great. Um you know, let's yourself live, get

(06:38):
get that body mass index up, bro, Like you don't
need to be starving out here in these streets. Just
be comfortable. Yeah. Um So anyways, Murdoch murdog, Murdoch murder Murdog,
the murder dog. Then murder dogs down in a South
Carolina are trending because they are apparently going to exhume

(06:59):
the body of the young person a kid, yeah, Stephen Smith,
who was found dead on a road near their property.
Like basically when you read the New Yorker article about this,
it's like where he was found as like really only
close to their property. There's not much else out there,
so it was be strange that was found there. And

(07:22):
the initial report was that he got hit by the
rearview window of a truck driving by and that's but
then other people were like, that really didn't seem like
that's what happened to this person. And so now that
that part of the country exists in a world where
it's not like a weird serfdom of that where these

(07:42):
people determine what gets to be counted as reality. They're
going to ExHAM the body and re examined to see
if he was in fact murdered, because that is rumor
that has flown for a long time and in that town,
is that he was killed for knowing something about that family.
So I don't know. Well, we'll keep our eye on

(08:03):
this one, but it does seem like a good thing. Yeah,
this this story is far from mulver, I think, um,
because there are just various bodies type to this family.
And I did watch the Netflix documentary. I'm not sure
how ethical some of the conjecture was because this young

(08:25):
man who was killed, Stephen Smith, he identified as gay,
and there's some conjecture that one of the sons may
have the surviving son may have had some kind of
you I'm not I'm not sure about any of that all. Yeah,
that's just that's just all, you know, headline making stuff.
But I am hopeful that this family gets the justice
they were hoping for because the rumor. As someone who

(08:49):
spent too much time in a small town. Um, I
claimed Chicago all day because I love Chicago and I
had a horrible time in the small town. I had
to move to a group yes near Chicago, and the
rumor mills that happened the underbelly of just like, oh,
you don't mess with this person or you don't do that.
I had a cop who was one of the highest

(09:10):
paid cops in the state who was my next door neighbor,
and he frequently used his power and influence to intimidate
the children who would make fun of his son. And like,
that's the kind of mentality I grew up with. And
these Murdoch people just really like remind me too much
and it's it's gross. I need to get away from it.
So I hope I hope justice comes for this family.

(09:31):
Yeah me too. Um. Also, like apparently the Murdogs were
like the cool parents, where like the kids could like
drink at their house. And hopefully that's not anyone listening
to this, but if it is, like that's actually not
not cool, even though I benefited from knowing parents like that.
But yeah, benefit is a can change with with perspective

(09:55):
and time. Because I thought I was I thought I
was having a great time, and it turns out those
things that I took advantage of. It didn't benefit for sure,
And how could you not? It's shangri law when you're
a teenager. But that's not you can't you can't do
that dark. Um, all right, let's take a quick break.
We'll come right back, and we're back. And so we

(10:24):
got some movie reviews coming in for Shazam two, which
I watched the first Shazam. It was a fun time
at the movies. This most recent Shazam. The reviews are bad,
which you know sometimes. Uh, the lead actor in that
just seems like a real piece of shit. Yea, the Shazam.

(10:45):
I guess he plays Shazam. Um not not cool. I
forget it exactly what his takes were, but they were
something about vaccinations or something. It wasn't important enough to
be Yeah. Yeah, hell then Mirand how how is how
is my girl? Yeah, that's that's the thing to ask. Yeah,
I have no idea. I have no interest in watching

(11:07):
this this sequel. Yeah, I mean either John Wick four
reviews are like on Metacritic, you which gives you like
the numerical value, It's got the best reviews in the
history of the franchise. Oh wow, pretty, I'm pretty sure
that's right. Or like that's not there. Yeah, it's at
a seventy eight on kind of seventy eight meta score,

(11:29):
which is pretty wild. I'm a big fan of Keanu Reeves.
I I love almost anything he does, even if it's mediocre.
So I write all here for this. Yeah, all right,
So it's a seventy seven. John Wick three was at
seventy three, John Wick two seventy five, and the original
John Wick was like sixty eight. So I don't I

(11:51):
don't know that that necessarily represents the truth about these movies.
It might just be like film critics getting on board
with the John John Wick way. But at the same time,
it's still promising that at least it's doing what you
come to a John Wick movie for. Yeah, it is
Saint Patrick's Day, So you know a lot of websites

(12:12):
putting out their their bouncer stories there there. I bartended
on Saint Patrick's Day and this is what I saw stories. Yeah,
I have a story to share myself. I was a
restaurant worker on Saint Patrick's Day right next to the
river when they died a green it was yeah, got awful.
Yeah you want me to get into it, because yeah,

(12:35):
hit it hit us with it. It's the same article
as the last time. The takeout just like republished their article.
But I still like it. I do. I do, just
want to honor the bartender's description. A man who kept
screaming every time he took a shot, got into a
fight with his girlfriend, made her cry, then got into
a screaming match with his bros. Then reached behind our
bar and stole one of our water pitchers and started

(12:56):
drinking directly out of it. All in the span of
twenty minutes. He was like a human tornado. That's that's
some good, horrible behavior, right. That sounds par for the course.
I was working at a restaurant called Epic Burger when
I was in college, and the it was the location

(13:17):
I was at was right next to it was like
in the financial district, So you got all like the
finance bros and whatnot, and you got all the riff
raff who was coming from the river dying. And I
was heading to work. It was nine am, and I
saw a pyramid of empties just stacked outside on the sidewalk.
I was like, this is gonna be crazy. So we

(13:38):
opened at ten or ten thirty. Nothing was happening for
quite some free like a couple of minutes, like ten
twenty men were like, okay, cool, this might be a
chill day. All of a sudden, it was like a movie,
like you hear in the distance, like a big burger
at biburger, and this mob of like ninety people just

(13:59):
came in the restaurant all at once. They there was
fist fights. There was people literally shifting their pants and
then wrapping it around the bottom of the toilet. There
were I didn't get a single break the entire I
did not one bathroom break. I stayed on that line
for nine hours and just served people yelling in my face.
There was someone, oddly enough who reached behind the counter

(14:20):
and also took a picture from behind the counter. It
was a fill of milkshake, like unmixed milkshake goo, and
they just started like chugging it in front. It was chaos.
I never again, so glad I'm at that. Yeah, maybe
don't do that, listener, if please don't take it about
going out have fun, but uh, try to keep in

(14:42):
mind the people who work at these places are human
beings and they don't deserve to deal with toxic waste.
For getting paid such a low wage, come on Keep
it Together, marsh Madness kicked off. There were a couple
big upsets. In one of them, fifteen seed Princeton beat
two seed to Arizona. And it was the first time

(15:02):
in my history watching NCAA tournament basketball that I wasn't
rooting for the underdog. Yeah, I was like in the
broad scheme of things, like Princeton is never the underdog, No,
not anything. Yeah, but you know, shouts out to anybody
pretending to work out there. Well, actually watching college basketball.

(15:24):
That used to be me. I lost my appetite for
college basketball a few few years back. But yeah, well,
those are some of the things that are trending on
this Friday, March seventeenth, Pappy Saint Patty's Day to those
who celebrate justin Where can people find you? Follow you
all that good stuff? You can find me at Jacon

(15:46):
the Smith on Instagram j C O N T H E. Smih.
Thank you very much. There you go. That's gonna do
it for us this afternoon. We're back on Monday with
the whole last episode of the show. And till then,
be kind to each other, be kind to yourselves, get
the vaccine, don't do nothing about white supremacy and we

(16:07):
will talk to y'all on Monday. Hie by ye
