Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello the Internet, and welcome to this episode of the
zid E zid Boss Trends. Uh courtesy of Hooss boss Man.
I am Jack O'Brien. That's DJ Daniel Goodman. Hello, I'm
doing well, doing we I am surviving. That's a that's

(00:20):
a good way of putting it. Amen. Um. Yeah, I'm
not doing not well, but better than um it could be. Yeah.
I feel like that's part of the trend is everybody
being honest and saying, well, I can't say I'm doing great,
but I am doing as well as I possibly could
in this time. Yeah. Yeah. So let's talk about what's

(00:43):
happening in the news right now. There are two names trending.
People who are famous. David Edwards was a great college
basketball player in the early nineties. He played for Georgetown
and Texas A and m Uh. He was in his
forties and he died in New York City from coronavirus

(01:04):
related complications. Um and then a one of the best
playwrights in the last couple of decades, best known for Ragtime,
Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman. Died in Florida
and he was in his seventies. So uh. The coronavirus

(01:24):
deaths are coming through unfortunately, and the charts are really
scary when you look at how much new cases are
going up and ship like that. So stay safe out there, guys.
And you know, healthcare workers very stressful time for them.
So if you have healthcare workers in your life, or

(01:48):
you know, you see some on the street and give him,
give him a shout out a solid six ft away. Yes,
and by shout, I mean shout across the street. Uh.
Six trillion dollars is trending because that is what they're

(02:09):
proposing for the aid package they want to give. It
would essentially be a transfer to Wall Street, like a
credit transfer to Wall Street. It's a lot. If you
could afford to give every American adult two thousand, three
hundred dollars a month for a full year. With that

(02:31):
amount of money, you could afford to give six million
people a million dollars for that amount of money, that's yeah. Um.
And instead it's when you put it in those numbers, yeah,
it's gonna basically, I mean this is that's a third

(02:53):
of America's GDP. So it's it's a massive transfer of wealth.
And the idea that it would go to companies I
know I'm sure they're like people who work in finance
who are listening and they're like, well, you guys just
don't understand. There's like all these things that you have
to take into account. And I would just say that

(03:14):
you probably have spent too much time talking to people
who are all in a very small bubble, who all
deal with the same concerns, and we should be giving
every American adults a month for a full year funk

(03:35):
off Easter. Uh so, kind of on the same tip,
Trump has said he wants us all to return to
work by Easter, and when asked what what that is
based on, he said he thought it would be a
nice timeline because Easter would be a beautiful time. Because

(03:56):
he's a fucking idiot, right, Oh gosh, to live in
his brain for a second, just be like, well, I
can say these things and they will make people feel better,
and that's all that betters, right, guys. He was so
pissed when the reporter asked him what that timeline was
based on. Its like, it was based on I'll tell

(04:16):
you what it was based on, based on the fact
that it's a beautiful timeline. What great, thank you, thank you,
perfect another perfect, perfect, damn, what's happened in the world
of video games. Let's get off all this uh Bummersville ship.
Let's get it off all this Bummersville ship and talk
about the coolest video game that has come out. Yesterday,

(04:37):
completely under the wire of everything else, but um Valve
released their next edition of their Half Life franchise called
Half Life Alex. It's an entirely VR game, so going
back into one of my other realms that I'm completely
obsessed with. But what's funny is that that game, Half
Life Alex, is currently about escaping an oppressive police presence

(04:58):
during a disease 's quarantine. What so, Yes, So as
much as I wanted to escape the world I was
currently in, unfortunately this game is frightening lye poignant. So
why so, I mean, you know, besides the fact that
the storyline is you know, kind of right on part
with where we're at, and there's many moments that kind

(05:19):
of give me a little bit frightened look at the future,
the game is an incredible usage of VR technology. It's
one of the most beautiful VR games I've ever played.
I've only gotten about two to three hours into the game,
and you know, like every VR experience. I'm recommending it
to everybody that I could talk to. But yeah, it it.
It is managing to be an incredibly poigning game in
this moment outside of it's just usage of awesome VR

(05:41):
technology And people who are listening to this obviously can't
see you, but you are currently wearing a VR helmet. Yeah,
where are you right now? There? I am currently in
the in the dark zone, uh, and surrounded by zombies
and head crabs, and I am just yeah, I'm I'm
in a lot of danger right now. And what what
is the police quarantine in the show. Is it like

(06:03):
a plague based police quarantine or more of a zombie
based It's definitely plague based. Definitely plague based on quarantine situation, Yes, definitely.
And the uh, the police look more and more like
the regular police every time, so it's it's just a
little more definitely. Reckon also heard that Camus the Plague,

(06:27):
I think it's called that novel is supposed to be good.
I have uh downloaded it on audible because I don't
have time to occupy my eyes doing anything else, so
I will be listening to Camus the Plague. It's a
good way to spend your time while reading my kids

(06:47):
bedtime stories. I love them. Finally, Britney Spears is trending
because she is our latest socialist thought leader. Um so,
what what's going on with Brittany So which recently? I
love it? She posted a picture on her Instagram, a

(07:10):
post picture on on Instagram which is a kind of
I mean, you could call it a piece of art.
It's a short poem, a long sentence by an artist
named Mimi Zoo and she posted it on and Britney
Spears posting on Instagram. I believe it was yesterday and
it's just a long phrase and it has some sort
of it has a couple you know, socialist elements to it.
And I'll read it to you right now. During this

(07:32):
time of isolation, we need connection now more than ever.
Call your loved ones right. Virtual love letters. Technologies like
virtual communication, streaming and broadcasting are part of our community collaboration.
We will learn to kiss and hold each other through
the weaves of the web. We will feed each other,
redistribute wealth, strike We will understand our own importance from

(07:53):
the places we must stay. Communion moves beyond walls. We
can still be together and Brittany adds her own little
communion goes beyond Walls with three rose emojis in her
own caption. Wow. Hell yeah. And as Robert Evans says,
Britney Spears will be the first celebrity scaling the walls
when we finally take Mara l Ago that that is

(08:19):
not not what I expected from her. Yeah, I completely agree,
And I think if anything, it's kind of contributing to
the contributing to the conspiracy theory around Britney Spears is supposed,
you know, isolation from her own kind of quarantine. Yeah
in the world. Yeah, I mean maybe she has been
in the same situation that we've been in. So for

(08:41):
people who aren't aware, there is a conspiracy theory that
she is being held hostage essentially by her father who's
in charge of her estate, and he's using the judges
ruling back when she was deemed mentally unfit to make
her own self determinations. Uh, she was put under her

(09:03):
father's care, and the theory goes that her father is
kind of keeping her hostage and she is using her
Instagram to send messages out to the people. Um, so
maybe because she has been captive in her own home
for longer than any of us have. She's like, okay, welcome.

(09:27):
Here is how we communicate with one another. We do
it over the web, we do it uh in code,
and we strike out occasionally post d s amimes more
or less. Yeah, shout out to her. I did not
see that for her, but I really happy for happy

(09:48):
to welcome to the revolution. Exactly, welcome to the revolution.
We need more like you. Yeah. Amen. Well, Dan, I
can't say it's been a pleasure, but been. It's been real, man,
it has been real, man, zeke Gang. I hope everybody's
staying safe out there. Please wash your hands, yes, please

(10:09):
stay social distance, yes, uh, to your face, don't congregate.
Only said that as I was touching my face. It's okay.
We're all we're all fighting the urge. Yeah. Um. And also,
if you have the ability to help each other, if
you want to communicate, if you want to talk to
people in the zeke Gang, join the discord. We have
an active discord page. There's over six hundred people in

(10:31):
the discord now who are all talking to each other
every day, talking about you know, there's a bunch of
different channels. If there's different things you want to share,
people are sharing their art. There's a writer's corner where
people are writing stories, they're showing their in homeworkstations, and
we're also sharing help. If you have access or if
you have ways that you can help people or anything else,
there's a channel for that as well. So if you
want to get in the discord, check the footnotes, check

(10:52):
the Daily Zycheist, Twitter and all that stuff, and they'll
be links there you just join. Yeah. Shout out to
night Gang, Uh, shout out to DJ Daniel keep it,
thank you, buy, shout out to you going uh, and
shout out to me of course I had no shout
out Uh, super producer on Hosniak, all these fine people

(11:15):
uh to make this show happen. Amen. We will be

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
