I AM six forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app
in Montrose, Santa Clarita, Temecula, and Marietta. This is Soul
Cal Saturday. I am your host Twalla Sharp. Welcoming you
to another Soul col Saturday Small Business Saturday Spotlight. Today
we are introducing you to Prospectors Federal Credit Union. At
(01:28):
Prospectors Federal Credit Union, they are a small, not for
profit local credit union in Diamond Bar in West Covina.
They provide financial services to the community, including the underserved.
They are a competitor to the big banks that are
owned by investors They are owned by members and run
by volunteer board of directors elected by their members, and
(01:51):
this is why they are so important to the local
West Coast La soul cal community. To tell us more
about out Prospectors Federal Credit Union, we have Eva.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Eva.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Pronounce your last name for me, ooh.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Girl, you just roll those rs in a way that
my tongue just got dizzy.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
I love it. Eva. First of all, welcome to the program.
Speaker 7 (02:20):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Tell me when Prospectors Federal Credit Union first opened up
in the community, what was the first thing you all
did to let yourselves be known that you were there
to help the underserved in the communities of Diamond Bar
in West Covina and soul calid large.
Speaker 7 (02:41):
So, Prospectors Federal Credit Union was founded in nineteen forty
nine and we actually started serving the telephone company employees.
We still serve the telephone company employees, but in addition
to that, we also help other small select employee groups.
So we have hospitals and nurses in the community, people
(03:04):
who work for specific employers, but we also serve the community,
so people that live within our zip codes, we're also
able to help them. We also help people who maybe
don't have a Social Security number, but they have a
tend So we help the unbanked, you'll become banked as well.
So our focus is to help our community and to
(03:26):
reinvest back into the community. So all your dollars that
you put into the credit union, they stay local, so
you don't have to worry about that money going off
to investors. So we're not for profit because any profits
we do make, we return back to our members in
the form of higher dividends on their savings and lower
rates on our loan products.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
What is the hardest thing that Prospectors Federal Credit Union
faces when going up against big banks like Bank of
America or Wells Fargo or Chase, Like with all of
those banking institutions surrounding Prospectors Federal Credit Union, what is
the hardest part about keeping your credit union running and
(04:12):
in service for the community.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
I think the hardest thing is it's both our challenge
and our asset, and that's our size. So we don't
get the visibility that the bigger banks get, but we
provide a better service, a more personalized service. We're able
to help members or just people who maybe they feel
intimidated to go to a big bank or they don't
think that they can get helped. But when they come
(04:35):
to us, we get to know our members by name
and we lend to the person and not just a
credit report. So I think the visibility are size. Obviously,
with size you have economies of scale, so it does
make it more difficult to always stay competitive, but we
(04:55):
try our best, you know, to provide the best service
and and the best rates that we can. In addition
to that, there's also all of the technology. We provide
all of that as well. But I think for us,
because we are smaller, just visibility and letting people know
that they can join. They don't need to be part
(05:17):
of a specific employer group. If they live, work, or
worship or even volunteer in one of our communities, they
can join.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
And by joining.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
What are some of the services that prospectors Federal Credit
Union provides. Do you help with small business loans, home loans,
car loans, student loans, things like that? What all do
you all provide for the communities that you serve.
Speaker 7 (05:41):
So we provide most of the services that any big
bank can provide. We provide loan products, auto loans, personal loans,
We provide mortgage loans, second mortgage loans. We also provide bathings,
checking eras. Most of the products you could get at
any local bank, you could get at any credit union,
(06:03):
including our credit union. Probably the one thing that we
are limited on is on the business side. We're not
set up to fully serve a big business, but we
do provide specialized services to some of our members who
are small business owners. You know, we can provide them
with basic accounts that they can use for their.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Business and for you as the marketing director helping to
get the word out about prospectors Federal Credit Union. What
is the most important thing that you think potential clients
need to know about your credit union.
Speaker 7 (06:40):
I think that the most important thing people need to
know is that we are open to help them and
their families. They just need to, you know, go on
our website, they can join online, or they can give
us a call and we can help them. We do
a lot of outreach in the community, so we do
financial literacy to high school students. We know that that's
the very big need to any any schools that allow
(07:03):
us to visit, We'll do elementary, middle school, high school.
We have our business development reps go out and provide
that service free of charge. We also support our local
law enforcement community, will sponsor some of the fundraisers that
they have. So I think joining our credit union is
(07:23):
just so important because we need to stay in business
so that we can provide that competition for the bigger banks,
because as we know, when there's less competition, there's more
opportunity for the bigger guys to take advantage of the
consumer and you know, charge more for things that don't
need to be as expensive. So we provide free checking.
(07:45):
We're the little guy just keeping the competition going so
that there's fair pricing all the way around.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
And if any of our soul Cal Saturday listeners want
to find out more information about Prospectors Federal Crest Union,
where can they go?
Speaker 7 (08:02):
So they can go to our website We're at Prospectors
FCU dot org, or they can give us a call
Monday through Friday. Our number is nine zero nine three
ninety six ninety six eight eight. Any one of our
member service reps will be happy to answer any questions
or if they want to come in. We have a
branch at Diamond Bar. It's thirteen ten value Vista Drive
(08:24):
in Diamond Bars. We also have a branch out in
West Covina at the Lakes So twelve thirty Lake Strives
Sweet one oh eight. We're happy to help anyone who
needs assistance. One of the other things we also provide
is we have an alternative product for payday lenders. We
know that sometimes people are paying like over three hundred
(08:45):
percent for something that you know, maybe they have an
emergency and they need assistance and they turn to a
payday lender. Well, we're an alternative to that. We're highly regulated.
We cannot charge more than eighteen percent for any loans
because we're a federally charged credit union, so all of
our savings and deposits are insured by the NCUA, kind
(09:06):
of like the FDIC. We have the NCUA Share Insurance Fund.
In addition to that, though, because our credit union is
so well ran and capitalized, we're able to also provide
an additional two hundred and fifty thousand dollars coverage through
American Share Insurance. It's a private insurer that if you
are a well run credit union, you can add that
(09:28):
additional insurance to members deposits. So we're very proud to
be a very healthy credit union and viable and We're
happy to help the community.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Absoluutely.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Eva, I want to thank you so much for taking
the time out to introduce us to Prospectors Federal Credit Union.
We thank you for joining us today. I've been speaking
with Eva and pronounced that last name for.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Me again and Tula.
Speaker 7 (09:55):
Can I just say one thing. I just want to
say that maybe you can't join Prospectors because of you know,
your geographic area, but I encourage everyone to seek out
their local credit union and join the credit union movement
and keep credit Union viable because we are a service
to all of our communities.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Absolusolutely, and I thank you so much for joining us
today and introducing us to Prospectors Federal Credit Union.
Speaker 7 (10:23):

coat and a striped shirt?
Speaker 2 (29:17):
What is it? What is the look? Black?
Speaker 3 (29:20):
Yeah, black black leggings, black dress, maybe like a long
black dress. Was you gotta have the Doc Martin's or
any kind of black combat boot?
Speaker 5 (29:27):

I love listening to you guys when you talk about
the old clubs and how cool they used to be,
because I'm not. I didn't grow up in LA, and
so I feel like I missed like such a moment
in time when the kids could go out and they
could go to the clubs and there was no cameras
and everybody was just doing their thing and there was
like a It just seemed like a different time. And
(30:25):
I feel I always feel like I missed out on
something really cool in La because now I would.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Never it was.
Speaker 9 (30:31):
It was a time it was You're from Pasadena to

such a weird blend of characters, groups from all all
different you know, athletes to want to be thugs, to cheerleads.
Everyone was in it because it was all a sixteen
years old going to a flug. Yes, Maryland's Backstreet in Dina. Yes,

All right, this air taxi service will be traveling from
oh They will have travel hubs at USC LAX and
the Burbank International Airport and even SOFI Stadium. The goal
is to get travelers quickly over choked roads to and
(34:42):
fro their destinations using these mini propeller air taxis. And
right now, what they're doing is they're clearing air traffic
lines and getting everything in place so that these can run.
But the thing that I'm most excited about is with
these air taxis coming to so Cow, the next step,
(35:03):
and I've been talking about this, the next step is
going to be personal flying cars. Yes, once you open
up the traffic lanes in the air for air taxis,
the next scene that have is flying cars. Flying cars
that may be rolled out by transportation companies like Uber
and Lyft. But after that, once we win the lottery,
(35:27):
we will be able to buy a flying car, because
I promise you, you know, just right now, with our salaries,
we're not buying any flying cars. But Archer Aviation they're
going to be bringing these air taxis to so Cow
by twenty twenty six and I cannot wait. I absolutely
cannot wait. All Right, before we get out of here,
