Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Garrett is here talking about his wedding. Garrett, congratulations, Thank
you hey, Garrett.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
So, I mean, this is wild. It just feels like,
tell us about your story with Alex, your wife, who
you've been with for about three years now, right, yeah, a.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
Little over three years or right around three years?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Where does time go? Is what? I mean? What three years?
Speaker 4 (00:29):
I know, it flies by super fast. I was living
in San Diego, and I mean, just cutting to it.
She just sent me a DM and we met up.
So it turned out that she lived like three miles
down the road from where I was at. I was
living with my brother, my sister in law and their
little guy, and she lived down the street, and I
was like, let's meet up. So that's kind of how
(00:51):
it went.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Dms are a good way to meet people. That's a
good way. I like that move, you know.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
I was kind of skeptical about dms, but then I
had to creep on her. So I had because she
was private, and I was like, she's hot, she's blonde,
she looks like she's fit, you know what I mean,
And so I freaking followed her and then she messaged
me back, and then the rest is history.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
It was relatively soon after you ended things with Becca,
and you and Becca ended things together, And was it
your first date out back out there?
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Yeah, it was so the odds, I know, I know,
so it's pretty crazy that it's the first person after that.
But I think I was just in the mindset that
I knew what I wanted and what I was looking for,
and then she pretty much fit all of that.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
So, so it's been three years now that you two
have been together. When did you really know that she
was somebody that you could potentially see spending the rest
of your life with.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
I would say she made a commitment. I moved back
to Reno. I was following a lifelong dream and career
up here, and she was down in San Diego, still
living a block from the beach. And then she's like,
you know, I want to make this happen. I'll do
whatever it takes to make it work. So she moved
up to Reno, she left living by the beach and
(02:17):
committed herself to me and making the relationship work. And
then especially when I went through an academy up here,
she was there for me every single day, made sure
that you know, I was taking care of everything was
set because it's hard going through those academies. It's a
grind academy. It was a fire academy. Oh okay, Yeah,
(02:37):
so it was a grind because and it's hard on
the relationship too, because every day I wake up, you know,
like five in the morning, get all my stuff ready
for academy. By the time I get home, it's like
seven o'clock at night. Then I got a study till
like ten nine, ten o'clock, go to bed, wake up,
do it again the next day. Yeah, it made it work.
(02:58):
And then it was sometime in there like there after
I was like, wow, you know, like in our hardest
time of the relationship and the most challenging, she was
there for me. She never you know, shied away from
it or anything like that. And that's really when I
could tell that I can spend the rest of my
life with somebody like that.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
How soon was that, like after you guys met just
her timeline purposes.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
That would have been that would have been right around
the two year mark, like year two year mark, so.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
She was all in. She said, Hey, I want to
be his support system. I know he'd do it.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
For me.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
This is a season he needs me. I'm going to Reno.
I'm leaving the beach.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, Reno is tough as somebody is. Just people who
fly into Reno sometimes.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
I like Reno. I think it's one of the best
things in the US. I think it's great.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
I haven't explored it much beyond the airport. It's always
just a stop on the way to Tahoe. For like,
Amy's like get together as our producer, Amy, you don't.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
See the best part SNA. Reno has a lot going on.
It's a great city.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
And we got Tahoe in our backyard.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, it's fantastic.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Okay. So why did you decide to go to a
fire academy? Are you firefighter? Now you graduate? Okay? So
why did you decide to do that in Reno and
not maybe in San Diego.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
So I was looking at San Diego and there was
just like different career opportunities. I applied to San Diego.
I applied all over. They call it like a shotgun application.
So I pretty much did everywhere on the West coast.
I did California, Oregon, Washington obviously in Nevad Idaho, A
lot of departments and I just started testing like crazy
(04:42):
to see which one I could get into. And then
just being up in Reno, I had a friend that
lived up here and was like, Yo, why don't you
come up here. We got some people because getting into
fire is one of the hardest things ever. It's almost
like if you don't know somebody in it, it's like
it can take a very long time to get in it.
(05:02):
A lot of people will quit. So the process was
kind of heinous. But anyways, came up to Reno and
my buddy was like, you could live with me, won't
charge your rent because I know times are going to
be tough. So I started working at an ambulance company
and then I got I tested with a couple of
departments around here, and then I finally got picked up
by one. So the department that hired me is the
(05:25):
academy I went through. Gotcha.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, So this is, obviously, you said, a lifelong dream
of yours. What about it made it a lifetrong lifelong dream?
Is it an interest in just helping people or is
it you know, has fire and like the mitigation of fires,
something that's always intrigued you.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Uh yeah, a little bit of everything. I've always enjoyed
just helping people, but I think one of the biggest
things is being a part of a team and playing
like collegiate sports and stuff like that, and getting that
fill for being a part of a team. It's almost
like that same thing in the fire department where you're
all trying to work together to accomplish a goal. You
train together, you work out together, you eat together, you
(06:06):
form like a special bond. And I was like, that's
so sick that there's a career where you can have
that same feeling as well as helping people and you're
always improving or the thing is always like you can
always be training and every day is different. I love that.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
So you guys got married in Hawaii this month? Why Hawaii?
What was the vibe?
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Like? She's always kind of wanted a little destination wedding
for me. I'm like, hey, I can get married anywhere.
She's had a vision since she was a little girl
kind of where she wanted to get married. Destination She
thought of Hawaii. We were on vacation there last year
and I had an old teammate actually and friend of
mine who got married at the place that we got
married at, but in a different location. And she's like,
(06:52):
oh my gosh, Alec's gorgeous. So when we were in Hawaii,
we're in Maui, we flew over to a Wahu to
go check it out. Immediately when we showed up to
the venue, We're just both stricken, like, oh my gosh,
the mountains, the ocean, just everything was there. What we
both love was in one one venue on location. It
was nice.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Oh perfect? Nice.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
How many people we had just about one hundred people there,
a little over one hundred.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
That's a lot for destination, buddy, that's really nice.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, were you nervous, like is this something you've obviously
been on national television? What were the emotions like leading
up to the wedding?
Speaker 4 (07:40):
You know that's her dad asked me that too. You
got to be anxious And I'm like, no, I'm not anxious.
You're nervous. I'm like, I'm not nervous. I was like,
I'm excited. We've been engaged for a year. I could
have gotten married and done this a year ago when
I popped the question to her, So it's just been
a year. I'm more excited than anything because I knew
that it was like a lot of our close friends
and family there, and then it was going to be
(08:01):
one hell of a party. Like it was so sick
how we had Alex got it all down. She loves
live music. Her family is very musical, so she's like,
we got to have a sax player there.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Oh I love that, Yes, under rated instrument.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
It was so sick. I mean the sacks mixed in
with the DJ. She put the whole playlist together, so
it wasn't like any typical dig at all. She's like,
if you play one typical wedding song like you're fired,
I don't care. I'll kick your as.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Alex and I would get along.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
So well, yes, absolutely.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Okay, So she was a Bachelor fan obviously beforehand. Since
she's slid into your dms, did she give up the
show once you guys got together?
Speaker 2 (08:47):
It was weird?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Is she still like it? What's her relationship to the
Bachelor now?
Speaker 4 (08:52):
She doesn't really watch the show if she does watch it,
maybe she doesn't in secret, I don't know, but no,
I don't think she watches the show anymore. She was
like a heavy viewer of it in the past. She
just kind of like watched it. She didn't watch like
every episode, but she'd watch it here and there with
her friends.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
So yeah, no, obviously she she saw something in you
from the show that she said, I am going to
message this guy. Has she told you yet? Like what
made her say, out of all the guys that come
through the show, out of all the seasons that she's watched,
this is the dude I want to DM.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Not really, she was just she said that it kind
of happened on a whim with her friends where it
was like, who is people that were on the show
that would be like a good dude that might be
in the area, And that's kind of how she came
across me. And then she said when she was watching
the season that I was her favorite on the season.
But anyways, but she just said it was she liked
(09:51):
that I was outdoorsy and I wasn't like trying to
seek fame or anything like that, so it was kind
of more attractive to her.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
What's weird about being part of Vagination is that when
you do break up, you have to kind of see
your ex continue to do life via the media. How
has it been watching Becca get engaged to go on
Paradise have a baby.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
I Mean, it's totally fine with me. Life goes on.
Life moves and for me it's like when something's done,
it's done, and I make that set in my mind
in my heart, and when it's like that, like there's
no going back for me. So when we broke up
and there there was no chance of that reconnecting, it's
like life goes on. We just want what's best for
each other, at least someone what's best for her. So,
(10:43):
you know, whatever she did to get to where she's
at now, I'm happy for and excited as long as
she's happy and living life the way she wants to.
So to me, it has no bother, no worry, anything
like that other than just hopefully you know, she's living
the life that she wants.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah, it is. It is wild though, you know, for
me personally, sometimes maybe earlier on, to see this person
that you're known to be with from the show Live
Life and they're everywhere, you can't escape it. It's like
a constant reminder of the show. Really it was to me.
So that's the best perspective, Garrett, to just be. You know,
(11:22):
you both moved on. Now you're both doing your thing,
and it sounds like you both are working working through
life in the most beautiful way and one of those ways.
As you've mentioned, you're in Reno, live in Reno as
a fire men. Are you guys going to stay in Reno?
Is that like you think that's the spot now forever.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
I never say any things forever, but it's our spot
for a while for sure, because getting going in the
career and everything like that. What's nice with the with
this job though, is that it does give you a
little bit of flexibility and the option to possibly live
elsewhere and then commute in. But I don't foresee that
happening anytime soon.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Did you have any bachelor alum at your wedding? Forget
to ask that earlier.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
No bachelor alem at the wedding?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
All right, Well, thank you so much for joining us, Garrett.
It's been really good to catch up with you. Is
there anything else on the docket right now for you
and Alex house kids?
Speaker 4 (12:24):
No, just thinking about the future. So hopefully we'll get
a house here. I don't know when, with how the
market is and just life in general. So we're just
coming back from being on the wedding doing a little
honeymoon action. Now it's just getting ready for the holidays,
paying off that wedding that we.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Just yeah, yeah, you enjoy the slowness and the bliss
that is. Yeah, the first year and such.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Yeah for sure. So but kids in the future for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Man, We're pumped for you. Congratulations once again. You guys
are a beautiful couple and wishing the best.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Thank you, guys. I appreciate you having me on here
and it's good to see you both too. Bye Garrett, Hi,
bye you guys.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Weddings are all throughout Bacheloration right now and here it's
the Almost Famous podcast. We are covering him all, from
Chris and Lauren to garretton Alex to Kenney and MARII.
Obviously we had Sarah Herron on just a few short
weeks ago. Uh, there's just so many weddings we need
to get. We're gonna get teon. She's busy right now,
(13:26):
but we're gonna get teon. It's just been a beautiful
season of love and laughter and life for Bachelornation and
we could not be more excited to be talking about it.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
But until next time, I've been Ben, I've been Ashley Cia.
