Speaker 1 (00:01):
And that's what you really missed with Jenna and Kevin
an iHeartRadio podcast missed. Really you what that end? Welcome?
I hate you so much. This is and that's what
you really missed. That hurt my brain so much. Oh
my god. Um, I'm Kevin, I'm Jenna in the reverse today. Um,
(00:27):
Welcome to the show. This is the power of Madonna. Madonna, Madonna,
Bobe Bogue. Though this is monumental episode for us. It
is the first tribute episode of several that we end
up doing. That's right, and you know I'm going to
(00:49):
be It's a great episode. Well one. Ryan Ropy directed it,
so leave it there. Um and and in preperation four,
some of the cast also did a TV Guide magazine
Glee Rocks Madonna episode or spread in the magazine, and
(01:12):
we all had different looks for Madonna, which was very cool.
There was a lot of promo for this one. Madonna
gave Glee her catalog and I guess said, go forth.
We also Kevin, well this one. Let's start with this one.
Aaron on April twentieth, twenty ten, and the number one
(01:35):
song was Rude Boy again, right, huh. Number one movie
was now kick Ass, which I also haven't seen You've
never seen kick Ass. Well, I'm not. I haven't seen
a lot of movies. You watched a lot of TV.
You don't see movies. I'm getting better because the husband
is a movie buff. So this week we also on
(01:57):
April seventeenth, we won that award for Outstanding Comedy Series,
and we also won the Future Classic at the eighth
Annuel TV Land Awards, which was at Sony Studios in
LA And I still have that my trophy. We got
another trophy that we got to take home. Yep, I
believe I still have that as well. Do you remember
(02:18):
who was sitting at our table? No? I remember we
got there and looking back and next to Jane was
Ann Coulter and I was at first filled with rage,
and then I was like, oh, I can't wait for
Jane to see she's sitting next to Ankold We really
I don't remember this, Yeah, And I was very confused
(02:40):
as to why she was there, why she was sitting
at our table. It's very inappropriate, it was very Additionally,
we recorded that Future Classic Award the same night as
the GLAD Awards. Do you remember that, Kevin where we
went to watch I changed outfits, changed looks, and then
we changed and went to the other one. It was
(03:00):
a quick It was a quickie. It was that was
a fun night. That was a fun night. All right,
let's get into this phenomenal episode with eight billion songs. Yeah. Um,
so obviously we are all big Madonna fans, but I
think Ryan was a huge Madonna fan, and Jane as
well said that on her pot and when she was
(03:21):
on the podcast. How many songs do we do in
this episode? There's eleven songs, but we don't perform all
of them. Some of them are just part of the score,
which is also great sort of Willy was always could
have been scored by Madonna music, but also like it's
I think it's the only time we had like music
quote unquote playing from the speakers in the hallway, So
(03:42):
it was just yeah scored, which I was like, why
don't we do that for more? It is a very
good idea, so fun. So the songs in this episode
are Ray of Light, Express Yourself, a mashup of Borderline
and Open your Heart, Frozen, Frozen, Like a Virgin, Justify
My Love, four Minutes, what it feels Like for a Girl,
(04:02):
and Like a Prayer, Wow, what a selection. I mean,
how do you pick? So you just do them all right,
right if you're in the writer's room. So the episode summary,
because this is obviously a Madonna tribute featuring only songs
by Madonna. After Sue uses her love and inspiration for Madonna,
(04:23):
she begins to train and ask her Cheerios to emulate
her in every way, shape and form. Mister Shoe is
concerned that the girls in the glee club are being
disrespected and bullied by the guys, and Jesse St. James
transfers to Pickinley High. There's also Sue is up to
(04:43):
no good also with trying to do some things with
the Cheerios and get some of the glee club members.
And there's also a lot of virginity talk happening this episode.
That is right, you know, high school things, high school things,
but also like high school things, but in a hotel.
I thought that was very funny. We'll get there, okay,
(05:04):
so she would kick it off. Let's kick it off.
We start with Ray of Light playing and we have
an incredible cheero performance. Right after my favorite thing per
usual Sue's journal and she's talking about how much she
(05:25):
loves Sue and again, I mean loves Madonna and breaks
a fourth wall by saying Madonna simply saying the word
allowed makes me feel powerful, even in voice over, how
I've worshiped her ever since I was a little girl,
and that will come through, that will tie into her
storyline through the rest of the episode. I don't feel
like we break the fourth wall a lot, though, unless
(05:47):
Ryan has something to do with it totally, because he
can do whatever he wants. He's the glue god. So
if he's like, we're gonna do this now, yeah, So
Sue then makes it her prerogative admission to continue her blackmail.
Figgins to be like, here's what we're doing. We're gonna
play Madonna's greatest hits to the PA system quite loudly
through an entire school day, and Figgins is obviously like, no,
(06:11):
blasting her delicious slicks would make it impossible for students
to concentrate. And then she's like, I don't really care, right,
Like she's like whatever, she like. Madonna didn't finish college,
and I think there's a couple of people here who
probably shouldn't finish high school. In the ship into New
York and basically Figgins, yes, thinks that's insane, but she's like, whatever,
(06:33):
I'm doing it. What you call insanity, I call inspiration. Right,
So her biggest dream is to pay homage to Madonna.
And there we go. There's the thesis of the episode.
And so obviously, let me know, Sue still has something
over Figgins. She is holding the blackmail card over him
(06:54):
with them in bed together. Yeah, so Sue based basically
as always, gets her way, and she has this gaggle
of Cheerios, the Cheerio team that can make her dreams
come true by winning nationals. So she says that they
have to start thinking and acting like Madonna, which akaa
(07:17):
is like dating younger men and no longer acknowledging that
any of them have last last names. And then you know,
she says, it's like Madonna once said, I'm tough, I'm ambitious,
and I know what I want. If that makes me
a bit okay, I'm pretty sure she stole that line
from one Sue Sylvester. No, really, she stole it from me.
I said at first Palladium eighty seven. And obviously, for
(07:42):
those of you who don't know that the Palladium was
a theater and back in the day, a nightclub back
in the day that turned into a theater where I
went to many a rave m yeah, little m Hannah. Yeah,
so okay, so there were going to this number. We
have our first of two crazy cheerio performances in this episode,
(08:06):
and we're watching this number last night, right, yeah, and
we were on like our usual cheer like hot cheerios,
and then I'm like, just wait for it, ray of Light.
There are people on stilts cheerios on stilts, and David
was like, oh my god. And those people, I know,
we were obviously older than high school age, but those
(08:28):
people were not even close. No, they've been doing this
for years. There's just some grown assment. This number is incredible.
I love that they got to sort of play, you know,
it's we had all our good cheerios out. It was
Hannah and Brittany, like everyone, all the Glee dancer all
(08:51):
stars were all on this number. They're all on this
entire episode, and you know, because we were not the
greatest dancers. I liked it. There were two chairs numbers
with actual professional dancers where you could really see Zach
and Brooks expertise. Well. Also, Zach toured with Madonna. That's right,
our choreographer toured with Madonna, so he is a very
(09:15):
an og Madonna dancer, very familiar with obviously her music.
I think he's in her documentary as well. Oh my gosh. Also, Kevin,
did you notice that in Ray of Light, Um around
six minutes when Madonna sings and I feel the McKinley
athletic sign is reversed. Oh yeah, I didn't, So they
must have flipped it in post for some reason. They
(09:36):
flipped the shot. Yeah, they flipped the shot. I was like, Oh,
it's interesting when during this performance, Shoe sneaks in to
watch it and is shocked by it. Yeah, and obviously
this is one of my favorite. Sue is not happy
to see him, and what does she say, Jenna, Oh hey, William,
(09:57):
I thought I smelled cookies wafting from the ovens of
the little elves who lived in your hair. I love
that this episode is it's like scratching that itch of like,
I'm now going to be obsessive about the hair jokes,
and I think that's one of I don't know six
or seven that end up happening in this episode. Yes, exactly, So,
(10:28):
mister Shoecy, is this this thing that Sue is doing,
and now he wants the glee club to also do
Madonna because earlier he had heard the girls talking and
the glee club where the girls are in the choir
room and Rachel asks something private, and she comes up
to the front of the room, of course, and she says,
(10:49):
let's just say, hypothetically, we went to a Wiggles concert
last Friday night, and then because my dad's weren't home,
we went up to my room and started making out.
It was erotic and romantic, and then he said, Jesse,
we should do it and it's no big deal, and
Rachel telling him no, because it is a big deal.
And she's also trying to pretend that this is not happening,
like she's actually getting Jesse, because she told the glee
(11:11):
club that that would be that she broke up with them,
because they're all worried right about the conflict of interest,
and all the girls are like, no, well, just don't
say no. This city is crazy, by the way, like
the things the guys have been saying to the girls,
and all the girls like, yeah, that's just the way
it is. It's wild. Well it's kind of true. Yeah,
(11:34):
So Merced says, look, girl, don't ask me. The last
guy I liked was the mayor of Gaytown, and I
can't wait to get a guy mad at me for
saying no. And then Dana Okay, to be honest, I
forgot that we were still together at this point, well
we weren't together yet really, because I and Wheels already
(11:55):
was like, I'm pissed off because then we're like back
together and you're telling me like how I should be,
so like I don't know anyway. Yeah, so Tina, we
flash whipped back to flashback. Tina's tells them about Larreatie
and how you already says Kevin, do you want to
give us her line? Reading god, thing was two years ago,
So maybe lose the vampire makeup and consider some tighter
(12:16):
feeding clothing. You got the power, and I believe you
should work it more for going to be an item.
Awful party, terrible, very good. So mister Shoes like wait, wait, wait,
hold up, are you guys really having now much trouble?
And he's like, Okay, maybe I'm not the one to
do this, but maybe Miss Pillsbury is. So he recommends
(12:37):
us to Miss Pillsbury, and Rachel says that she tried it,
and she and that she suggested that Rachel talked to
her rabbi, which in Rachel flashbacks like, um, I don't
think I'm comfortable talking to my rabbi about this. There
are also some incredible pamphlets. There was one yes in
the backgrounds that help, I'm in love with my stepdad,
(13:01):
I still breastfeed? How old is too old? Being easy
as one, two three, And then there was one that
just says loose back. No really. So when Wilson the office,
he says he wants to help Emma in the sex
department because or her sex talk department, because it's her
blind spot. Obviously it's enough in the last episode, so
(13:23):
with his help she can be prepared to answer the
questions without needing to have sex. I think it's interesting
this episode where obviously sex is a huge part of
this episode, and then female empowerment is a huge part
of this episode, where I think when you think of
Madonna's career and her catalog, those are two of the
(13:43):
first things you think of, right I who was at
the forefront. Yeah, And I think that was such a
great way to weave that end to everyone's storyline. It
was perfect timing M. And then we get to the
um the glee club. He writes Madonna on the board, right,
(14:05):
and he asks what the glee club thinks when they
see Madonna? And everybody has a different opinion. Some are
Rachel says genius, Chritsis icon Palk says hall of fame, milf,
which is true. Um, but he gives them the assignment
for Madonna and the girls are like super excited, but
the boys aren't. They're like, can't we do somebody like
(14:28):
Pantera right version of Madonna? Which is not Pantera? But okay. Um,
So Will's like, okay, guys, you you've been very disrespectful
to the girls. You've been sexist, misogynistic, and then Britney says,
when I pulled my handstring, I went to a misogynist M. Yeah,
(14:53):
it's funny, it's great. And the guys are still not down.
They're not they're not about it right and the Rachel
and Rachel's like, okay, I'd like to point out that
Shoe once again is showing up the class unprepared. That
is just step leaving it to us, and like, you know,
runs across the Sue and he's like, I was inspired
(15:16):
by like that you were just unprepared, You just didn't
know what you were doing. But more importantly, we do
express yourself, Kevin. Right before it started, I shouted out loud,
come on, squirrels, do you believe in loud? That's all
I think about every single time. I am so I
(15:37):
watched it with Austin and Austin because the so express
yourself starts and all of you are the girls, aren't
these incredible Madonna outfits with the hair and the microphones?
And you cut to the auditorium stage and you start
doing the fist pumping move and I started doing that.
I remember the choreography. I remember watching you do this
so well. And it was one of those two times
(15:57):
where because we got to have so much fun and
like really play with these numbers, that our characters minus
Chris in the audience were so the opposite of how
we actually felt in real life, right, And it was
one of those times where like we couldn't show how
we actually felt because I remember watching the rehearsal of
(16:18):
this and just freaking out, yeah and like cheering for
you and running up on stage because it was it
was it was, you know, one of our first girl numbers.
We had the match ups and we have this, and
I mean, let's be real, the girls were way better
than the guys, and so well they're different. They were
different well you know, but also, like my opinion, express yourself, like,
(16:42):
this is a great song and it's so cool to
watch all these women do Madonna's music. You were dancing
so hard. I was dancing so hard that I was like,
oh my god, John, tone it down. It's so good.
Tone it down. But it was really fun and it
was fun to actually dance, and it was fun to
actually do like a real number versus like running around
(17:05):
the stage. So I remember this as well and remember
being like, oh, you guys can't be there were you
weren't bored watching this at all? And then we were
feeling your energy in between takes. So one of those
incredible moments where like our job that day was to
show up and watch an incredible performing Yeah Madonna. Yeah Okay.
(17:25):
So then we get into like a hodgepodge of stuff,
the Cheerios mess, you know, an action where because Sue
has now challenged the Cheerios to date younger men, Brittany
and Santana are on a mission. Brittany says, guess who
I'm dating, Wes Brody. He's super cute. He plays soccer
(17:46):
with my sister. He's seven and he's in a madonal
and she's in a madonalau, which is awesome. And then
Santana remember she needs a funny, younger man or be
kicked off the cheerios, and Brittany reminds her that finished
three days younger than her and super dumb, and how
to get a man to follow you forever is to
take his virginity. So Santana, I love that we get
(18:06):
so much Naya in this episode. The first episode, we
really get more Nya, and she's so funny and sings
and forms her ass off. So Santana then tells fin
Aka fin as sense it's high time you losses big
v and that everything about him screams virgin. She says,
(18:28):
you're about as sexy as a cabbage tratch kid, it's
exhausting to look at you. And he says that he
is in love with Rachel, but Santana tells him the
truth and says that he is. She is still dating Jesse.
I like that. Santana's always like, no, why are all
you like children still playing these games. Yes, yeah, I
(18:50):
figured out life. I know what's going on. I'm reading
people get it to get there, and Santana says it's
a when when do they have sex? For both of
them but her? And then Emma called Sue into her
office and wants to know why, Um, there's Madonna's is
playing every heor but her office, and Sue says, well,
(19:13):
it's simple, Arlene. You don't deserve the power of Madonna.
You have none of her self confidence, her power over
her body, or her sexual magnetism simply, but you have
all the sensuality of one of those pandas down at
the zoo who refused to mate. I had, uh your
intercom disconnected? Oh and then Rachel. We caught the Rachel
(19:34):
who tells Finn that they should do a mash up
of Madonna's co captains um and then Finn confronts her
about Jesse and asks why she lied. Yeah that was
that was brutal. Oh yeah yeah. And she's like, but
as a friend, like you know, we should support each other.
And he's like, um, I thought this number was such
(19:56):
a cool, an incredible and fun um homage to Madonna.
Madonna that looks oh my God, I remember makeup and
wardrobe had a fun time with this one. I do
love Ryan's directing so much. I thought this whole episode
was directed so well. And you know there's something about
(20:20):
like that when he directs in you know, next episode,
Paris directs the simplicity, yes of how like intentionally simple
to really showcase like the realism of being in high
school amongst all this very surreal things going on around
and so like them in the hallway with all these
(20:41):
incredible Madonna looks was so much fun and like, what
a great way to honor I mean, how many I
tried to keep count of how many looks there were,
but there was one for every significant Madonna era. Oh yeah,
I think there are eight Madonnas. Yeah, there were a lot.
But it was Yeah, it was a really cool homage
that this song hash up is really great. It was
shot really well, Corey on the drums like Leah's singing.
(21:05):
It was like it just it was so it was
like an elevated version of No Air do you remember exactly?
And I was like, yeah, give me this um and
Ryan loaves of Hallway shots true and then we well,
Finn agrees to lose his v card to Santana after
(21:28):
this number, yeah, right after this number and um. Then
Sue confronts Will all this happening like in the hallway, right,
lots of action. That's where high schools are really alive
in the hallway. And then Sue hears that the glee
club's doing Madonna number. So Sue confronts Will about all
(21:48):
of this, gets mad and says it's in her contract
that only she can do it. He says no, she
insults his hair. He and then he insults her back
her hair, and who's standing there watching this whole thing
curtain and they see Will insult Suit by saying, by
(22:10):
the way, how do the Florence Henderson looked working out
for you? And oh, maybe you should try setting a
new setting on your flow beat. Oh snap, and Sue
and then starts throwing kids and curtain. Mercedes are like,
listen here, Sue, we have an idea because we said
(22:30):
that we were going to do our own project for
Madonna week. And no, sorry you go no, no, it's fine.
So Sue two shares with them. She's like, I wasn't upset,
but her parents weren't around a lot because they were
famous Nazi hunters, um and um. When she was six
years old, Madonna's True Blue came out inspired her and
(22:54):
her handycapable sister used to dye her hair with whatever
chemicals they had in their in their house, and that
she's actually jealous Will's hair ammonia napalm. So Mercedes says
what everybody is thinking. She's like, wait, that would make
you like thirty and she has twenty nine. So they
(23:18):
were convinced you to let them use the cheerios to
help her with a new look, and they're like yes,
So we get into Vogue the shot for shot remake
that Arretie directed myself obviously, and was that and that
was your impression of Ryan? It was inspired by I
(23:42):
tried to do more of a respectful impression of Ryan
in front of Ryan, which I was scared about doing,
and then I just think it was I am Arretie's
not gay, so I had to rein it. Yeah, fair enough, yep, um,
(24:03):
you know, I think it's interesting. Maybe it's not that interesting,
but selfishly, I had no desire to direct at this time.
I was like, oh, that's fun. That Artie is a director.
Kevin would never direct. And now I've several music videos.
That's so funny. I think I believe that it's life
imitating art. I think art imitating life. So maybe Artie
is the reason I started directing music videos. Wow. Anyway,
(24:25):
this music video, the full song, a full shot for
shot remake, I mean in this video are incredible. It
felt like we were transported back to like the eighties. Yes,
I love how serious it was, and so and like
Jane looked beautiful and like it just they all everybody
(24:46):
like it was perfectly lit. They spent so I think
they spent a whole, like more than a day on
this time. Um, and go watch it if you haven't, seriously,
just go watch this video. So it's perfect. Um, and
so Kurtain Mercedes are like, yay, we did it. I
wonder what what looks she was going to come out
wearing today and um, and then Kurt's like, oh and
(25:10):
Sue was in cone Bra sorry signing out real quick.
Back to that music video. She we changed the lyrics
where it's like will Schuster, I hate you, she's a
vest dance on her like there. We couldn't lit do
that every time. There were a couple times where I
recorded two different versions of like, oh, really saying Artie
or Mercedes in a song and um, and then not
(25:34):
saying it doing the original lyric because you had to
get permission to do that. But do you think Madonna
just gave express consent or just you can do whatever
you want? I think? So, I mean, yeah, it seems
this is huge. Yeah. Um. And because of Figins Vegins,
Sue goes back to being her own her her own
(25:56):
self because Biggin says, you're a powerful woman. You don't
need to be anyone else. You're an original, just like Madonna.
Don't lose that quality, right, So she's saying that everybody
needs to reinvent themselves, um, starting with the two of them. Um.
And and then we get into this this the sex talk,
(26:18):
the virginity of it all, so we know sum Finn
has decided to lose his virginity to Santana. Once that happens,
there's this virginity domino effect, if you will. Rachel then
meets up with Jesse in the library and it's so
I love the scene so much. The book falls and
(26:39):
she's like Sondheim, m very funny, and she tells him
that she is ready, and well he's like, no pressure
I'm going to be ready whenever you're ready, and she's like,
I'm ready. How do you feel about watching Gruff put
on this sexy ma'am? I buy it? I buy it.
(27:04):
He puts his arm up like on the stacks and
he's like, whatever you want. I'm sorry I pressured you.
I take it. What do you think I mean? Yeah?
Obviously hot? Um? So all right? So yeah? No so hot?
Okay so um blushing. And then Emma is catapulted into
(27:29):
this this need after Sue tells her that she's not,
you know, she doesn't deserve to listen to Madonna, that um,
she needs to be like the big Moe and take
control of herself. And she says, I'm planning on doing
the nasty with you tonight at your place. For play
shall begin. It's seven thirty sharp, okay, ye, So we
(27:51):
have like a virgin which intercuts between three couples and
it's a great number, great great number sort of vignette.
You don't know if it's a dream sequence or not.
It's three vignettes between Rachel and Jesse, Finan Santana and
this dodgy motel room. And then what Emma and Will
(28:14):
and Rachel's cape. It's so good. I think this number musically,
how the voices are intertwined, yeah, and mixed, and the
choreography between this and also if you go listen to
the four like Naya is singing yes on this song
and it's like the first time, like yes, of course
(28:35):
give Naya the ab libs. They're so good, right. I
think they realize they're like, oh, we can give her stuff,
and like we should give her more. I also, I
love I know you said this, but I love Jamie's voice,
I know. And the cutting of the editing of this
number two is so good. It's so so good, and
(28:57):
it ends with us back. You know, it all started
at the top of the scene and we don't know
who actually went through with it. A little cliffhanger, all right,
So we learned this is what we learned, Okay. We
learned that Rachel didn't sleep with Jesse because it would
be like sleeping with the enemy, because she doesn't have
the support of her team teammates and she's not ready.
Then Finn, we learn, lies and tells Rachel when they
(29:19):
share that he didn't sleep with san Antono. But he
did it, but it didn't mean anything, so it felt meaningless,
and she told him that she did do it right,
so they lied to each other. And then we come
to find out that Emma also didn't do it, and
she didn't sleep with Will like Rachel didn't sleep with Jesse,
and you know, she has some issues. She doesn't know
(29:40):
why she does this, so she's embarrassed and Will wants
to get her some counseling to get her help with
her issues. And they have a no dating policy until
his divorces final, which I thought was a very hute scene.
But when is that? And he had filed the hippoc already,
so thought that was cute. And then we have even
(30:04):
bigger drama because Jesse, seeing James, joins the glee club.
He just happens to have parents who winter in Bali
and an uncle that lives in their district who he'll
stay with. And this takes us like basically into our
kind of feeds into our next episode. But Mercedes and
(30:27):
Kurt obviously have been like laying the groundwork this whole episode.
They're not happy that Jesse has joined the glee club.
It will you know, they won't. It'll keep them from
getting even less solow than they already have, so they
decide to join the Cheerios and they do four minutes,
which again another massive number. This number was so much
(30:52):
fun to watch. Oh my god, so much fun to watch.
It was an explosion of joy again, everyone dancing so
hard and Chris and Amber sound it looked great. They
sounded great. They looked great. I was like, also fun
to get them perform outside of Glee Club. It's fun
to see them do that. Like, see these characters do
(31:12):
that outside of Glee clubs liberating. But mister Shus not
happy about it. He's pissed and he would have liked
the heads up. And Mercedes like, oh, you mean the
same way you gave us a heads up before not
giving us a solo almost every week Solar and Kurt says,
mister Schue. Mercedes and I talked it over and we
love being in Glee and here's the important part, but
(31:33):
being in Cheeros will give us more opportunities to shine.
So we're doing both. Oh Snam, they're not leaving Glee Club. Ah.
And then Sue says, which is the final hair inside
of the episode, insult of the episode. I think Chipper
up Tiger. You know, I was down at the pharmacy
today and they're having a monster sale on Depth. Depp
(31:54):
is a hair gel and once again I'm making fun
of your incredibly stupid haird Do you remember dep No?
Oh yeah, which is why this little explainer is really
helpful for me for people my gosh, well, Depth is
like it was around the time of Madonna and it
was really strong. Okay, so then the boys weird the
(32:23):
boys with the boys number what it feels like for
a girl, which I love this number. And Puck's still
like not down with this whole thing. He's like throughout
the whole episode, it's been like move He's Madonna. Like,
we're just saying a great number, thank you very much. Um,
but this number is so so good. Did you did
(32:49):
you like this number? Did you guys like the number?
To doing it? I shooting it was sort of, you know,
like weird and we're all just sort of staring at
each other around on a piano. UM. I remember recording
it was fun. Yeah, I love this version. I I
(33:09):
sort of revert to like my boy band ad libs
in this song because it was the only, the one
and only time there wasn't a guide vocal for the
ad libs, and then Alex or Adam whoever was recording
the vocals was sick, and so they just let me
do whatever I want. And then they kept like all
of my ads really, you know, yeah, it's all boy bandy,
(33:31):
but I thought it was. I thought we all sounded
really nice together. He did. I like when they slowed
things down like that, and like the role reverse. I
think it was also taking a song like this up
was not the biggest Madonna hit to use as a
teaching moment and to show the song to a different
audience is also great and very smart because it's a
(33:52):
great song. Oh great. And then we get to Tina Nartie.
Do you remember shooting the scene. Yeah, so the first
scene is or you go off on Artie and you're
into the camera and I correct me if I'm wrong,
But remember Ryan, as you said before, loves all the
hair and the big movements, and so he kept wanting
you to just go crazy into I look wild. Yeah,
(34:16):
it's wild. He's like bigger, bigger, And I think I
used probably the last take where you were just going
absolutely insane. I was like, okay, well just I'm just
gonna do it. Then that's right. And you were laughing
and then yeah, so this scene that we did together.
I love this scene because, like you're right, with Ryan
(34:37):
and Paris, it's very grounding and it's very quiet, and
I love these quiet scenes that like, we don't often
get to do as much as like Finn and Rachel
and you know, some other characters. So I thought this
was sweet. I also think this is one of those
scenes where it's a testament to how I think it's sweet.
Here's what we're gonna do. Where the scene was not
(34:59):
written in this way. Do you remember this? That's right.
It was completely different, and the blocking was weird, like
I was supposed to be entering the room where you were,
you know, and Ryan was like, oh no, this doesn't work.
And so because it's Ryan and he's in charge, he
stopped for I don't know, ten fifteen seconds and sort
(35:19):
of had a far away look in his eyes and
then was like, Okay, we're going to do it here.
Here's what we're gonna do. You come in, You're going
to be at the piano together, a sweet intimate moment,
and then rewrote the scene before our eyes and gave
us new lines. And it was one of those things
where we rehearsed it, and I was like, wow, like,
(35:41):
thank god he was here to do it, because this
feels so much more right. It was so much better
for us and made it so much more effective for
the characters. That's right. No, I remember that. I knew
there was something special about this scene. I was like,
what was that? Yeah, because it was nothing like that
being seen and yep, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.
(36:03):
And that's why I think why. I was like, I
took to the quiet and it's like, yeah, the stillness
of it, because it was much different than what I
had remembered it being. And selfishly I did like that
it was a mature, real conversation where already said some
stupid shit earlier and you actually apologize. He learned something
and apologized and yeah, you know, yeah he saw the light,
(36:26):
he saw the ray of light. That's right. And then
we kiss. Oh my gosh, we kiss again. At this
point I was like, I don't even I don't think
it was a second thought. No, this was much easier.
The first one was like in a dimly lit hallway first, yeah, exactly.
Now we're like whatever, um, and then we we go.
(36:46):
We cut to the hallway where Jesse will Finn is
apologizing to Rachel telling also saying that he was wrong
that he had a crush on her, and she's like,
you would have crush on me, which is very sweet.
Sweet and and and then Jesse comes in and it's like, Okay,
I know we have some beef, so let's just take
(37:07):
it to the parking lot and have a sing off.
It's very funny. Um and Finn actually surprises them all
and says, no, I'm going to try and stay away
from your girl, and welcome to the new directions. Then
let me walk you through a new number, oh way wild,
(37:31):
And we go to the last scene, which is like
a prayer, which, yes, I mean we all have a
very soft spot for this number, don't we. We do
we did on the first tour, we did on the
second tour? Did we do in the second tour? No? No? No?
Were you sure? No? But no? I don't think we
(37:54):
did it on a second tour. Did you know we
started rehearsing for the tour like right around the time this,
I think like a month after this. That makes sense? Yeah? Anyway, um? Well,
Also fun fact, Amber's family was in the first row
of this quiet Amber's mom is right behind her, and
then her sister is right to them, the right of
(38:17):
Amber if you're looking at her, And that was really fun.
It was so sweet. I love there's one shot of
them together and it's just so so sweet. This number
is very powerful. Yeah, it was really fun to perform,
and it was our first number was groff that's right.
And I would also just like to point out that
this production with a full choir is performed exactly for
(38:43):
no one. It's kind of like the pyrotechnics at vocal Adrenaline.
What doesn't matter, Kevin, does it matter? There were so
many times right this episode I was like, this is
a crazy show. People watched this right, and I can't
take myself out of it. I know it's hard any
(39:05):
objectivity to being like, if I just saw this on TV,
what would buy? Were people just breaking into song? There
are people dressed Madonna going through the hallways where there's
a full choir behind us, singing like a prayer. I
obviously love it, but I don't know, I don't know.
I agree, I can't. Sometimes I can take myself out
(39:27):
of it and sometimes I cannot. Yeah, but I like
this number a lot. I like this number, how it
made me feel when I was shooting it, in all
of us being together, and then I also really liked
this number from Afar and just being a walk an
audience viewer. It was also nice to have really great,
a really great vocal singing moment with Amber and Lea
(39:49):
together because they're pitted against each other so often that
they're both getting an opportunity to shine their characters opportunity
to shine on this number together. Do you also remember
on our tour, on our last show at Radio City,
this was we turned around and when the choir was revealed,
it was all of our people. It was Ryan, I cried,
(40:11):
being and Brad and Zach. They were dressed in the
gowns and they surprised us. So as we turned around
after Lea does her you know solo, and the curtains open,
and I mean I would bald. I cried through that
whole thing. I think we all did. I just feel
like our backs were turned to the audience because we
were just like, oh my god, it was really cool.
That was really cool, good good memories. I loved this episode.
(40:35):
I love this episode. I think the writing is great,
the song selections were great and not necessarily obvious either. Yeah,
it was all very good. Great, should we do some
tardy takes? That's a day okay? Um, cringe moments aka
ou cheese. I mean the guys being awful to the girls.
(40:59):
You know, some Ardie and Jesse moments were very cringe
and also like Puck being weird about singing songs by
a female artist. Fair enough cringe, fair enough. Um, I
would say, uh, trying to get the girls to date
younger men, but not that I don't mind girls dating
(41:19):
younger men. Brittany was dating a seven year old, right, Um?
Worst dance move honestly, they weren't none. No, because it
was Madonna, there were I think we shud talk about
best dance moves. Nah, I think. I think the stilts
were hilarious and great. Oh god, I think four minutes
(41:43):
is also a really good four minutes was incredible, and
I think the girls number was very very good. Oh right,
that's probably my pick. So best song? God, this is
really hard. I mean Vogue or Right of Light, I
don't know, like a Virgin, I don't know. Oh, I
(42:04):
will say my favorite song just because of the Glee versions,
I will say, like a Virgin or what it feels like. Okay,
I like this versions. I was saying what it feels like.
I was like, oh, that's a good one. Yeah, but
they're all really good performance by a prop. Okay. Do
(42:26):
you remember, Oh, come on, squirrels, express yourself. Those monocles
we had to wear kept whipping us in the face
and I got like a full on bruise on my
face because I was dancing so hard in the monocles
were flipping up. They're so long, and so I would
say the best performance by a proper worst performance by
(42:47):
a prop would be the monocles. I would also say
the head mics. There were two numbers with head mics,
and this number okay. And then the best lines. Okay,
I think you got this, you said earlier. I think
that's the one. Okay. Well I have two, okay. So
the first one is Sue's about the elves in the hair.
(43:10):
Oh hey, William, I thought I smelled cookies wafting from
the ovens of the little elves who live in your hair.
Because that one really lived on forever, it did in
Glee history. The other one I have is when Mercedes
and Kurt are in Sue's office. Kurt says, Mercedes is black,
I'm gay. We make culture. Yeah, that was a really
good those Curt and Mercedes in Sue's office are some
(43:30):
of my favorites. And Mercedes is Black, I'm gay. We
make a culture is absolutely incredible. Okay, Jenna, Okay, are
you ready for some shit we found on TikTok. I'm ready.
We're gonna do things a little differently this week. All right,
What so this is something that we are going to
(43:51):
put on TikTok. What so all of our TikTok and
social media people have been talking about. Obviously, ted Lasso
season three is coming out, Yes, and a big thing
of ted Lasso is that Believe sign you know that's
in the locker room yep, above the door. And when
we were researching before Jane came on the show, Vicky,
(44:15):
our incredible producer, came across when Jane hosted SNL and
twenty ten and they did a Glee sketch and it's
sidekis being Shoe and the theme for the week is
Believe and Yes, and Fred Armison does a very good artie.
(44:41):
It's phenomenal, and christ and Wigg then comes in as Gilly,
So it's a whole gilly sketch. So Jason Sidekis, it's
suddenly Lee Club become with the perfect theme for their
medley for regionals and they have to listen to their hearts,
and Rachel says that the perfect theme would be Believe,
and so this Dakis is like, we are going to believe,
(45:02):
and it all becomes about the Believe theme, and of
course they do, don't stop believing. And so our conspiracy is,
did this plant the seed for Jason Sidekis to use
Believe as ted Lasso's sort of theme sign? Oh my gosh,
(45:24):
that's so brilliant. Yes, I'll send you watch the sketch.
I'll send you the sketch. It's hilarious. And are you
guys gonna make a TikTok about it and put it?
And I think we're gonna have to put it on.
Then that's what you really missed TikTok oh? I love it.
I love it. This is great. I also do you
have any memory of this? No? I have, I had
(45:45):
zero memory. I remember watching Jane's s n L. So
I just have a bad memory. I guess because I
saw that Vicky said, um Vicky was sending it and
she was like Fred Armison plays you. I'm like, what,
(46:06):
how do I not remember? You got played me? She's like,
you guys must have been doing a lot if you
don't remember that, Like, yeah, because I'm a huge as
that's funny, crazy, but you should go watch it, go
find it. We're gonna put it on TikTok um. And
that's that. That's Madonna. That's where you really missed. Yeah. Um,
(46:26):
next week we have Home, which is think. Oh, you're
not gonna want to miss that one. That's great, and um,
don't forget that Alexandra House. Our dear, dear, lovely miss
Nia Ribera supported Alexandra House, which is a transitional home
