Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's been another busy news week and we like to
review the major stories of the week here on the
Black Information Network. Today, we are joined by Black Information
Network news anchors Alexandria Ikimoni and Trey Thomas to discuss
this week's major stories. This is the Black Information Network
Daily Podcast and I'm your host, rams Jah. All right, Alexandria,
welcome back to the show. How have you been. What's

(00:22):
the latest?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hey there, happy to be back. A lot going on
in the news world. Can't wait to talk all about it.
There's always something going on, so I'm ready to dive
in absolutely.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
And mister Trey Thomas, this is your first time on
the show. Welcome. Before we get started, make sure you
let our listeners know a little bit about you and
how they can get a hold of you on social
media and all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Oh awesome, Thank you for having me. It's a pleasure
to be here. I'm an old hat at journalism, been
doing this for about thirty years and I've been with
the Black Information Network for about two months now. I'm
prior to that, I was also with iHeart Media working
for NBC News Radio. But I have been enraptured with

(01:06):
the programming on Black Information Network. All the people are awesome, Alexandria.
We had a chance to meet about a year or
two ago when mister Barry was walking through the building,
So it's good to be joining with you today.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah. Yeah, Well, I can't wait to get your thoughts
on all the news that we'll be recapping today, and
let's not keep the people waiting. First up, Georgia District
Attorney Fannie Willis is back in the crosshairs of Georgia
Republicans who are determined to find ways to have her
removed from the Trump voter fraud case. But as usual,
the black female DA is fighting back. Alexandria, you cover

(01:42):
the Atlanta market for the b in where this story
is happening, So let's kick things off with you tell
us the latest on this story, and then Trey Thomas,
we'll get your thoughts next.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
So, a lot of moving parts surrounding the Georgia election
interference case. So Georgia Appeals Court will now consider former
President Trump's appeal of a decision to not move Fannie
Willis and from this case. But back in March, a
judge ruled that Willis could remain on the case if
Special prosecutor Nathan Wade was removed from this same case,
but Trump has tried to remove Willis because he feels

(02:13):
like the relationship she had with Wade should disqualify her.
So something else that's also going on the Court of Appeals.
There was an order that gives Trump ten days to
file a notice of appeals. Also recently, Bonnie said that
she will refuse to testify before the Georgia State Senate
special Committee investigating her. It's over misused taxpayer money during

(02:35):
her relationship with Wade. So that's a separate investigation. But
just so much happening surrounding this case where we're going
to continue following it until the very end, all right,
and then Trey, let's get your thoughts here.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, it's it's interesting, you know. All all the while
this is going on with this trial, Fannie Willis is
up for reelection, and she was on the steps of
the Big Bethel a church in Atlanta, and showed had
a show of support from many of the faith leaders
and political leaders in the group. So she's fighting a

(03:10):
two front battle trying to stay relevant in her reelection
race as well as trying to stay on this case
with the former ex president.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah. Yeah, And we have a quote directly from her.
She says, first of all, I don't think they even
have the authority to subpoena me, but they need to
learn the law. This is what she was saying in
regards to the probe as a couple of days ago.
She goes on to say, I will not appear to
anything that is unlawful and I have not broken any

(03:41):
law in any way. So that kind of gives you
an idea of how she feels about things. But you know,
as you mentioned, we're going to continue to follow the
story and provide you with each and every update moving on.
Earlier this week, video surfaced from protests against the Israeli
Palestine conflict at Old Miss, taking on racial undertones, all

(04:03):
while receiving support from a white congressional leader. Trey, You've
been following the story for the Black Information Network, So
this time we're gonna start with you give our listeners
some more details on the story, and then Alexandria, we
want to hear your thoughts as well.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Well. That student who could be seen on social media
making monkey noises and mocking the African American student, the
female who was a protester. He's been kicked out of
his fraternity, and so that was interesting. I got to
admit I didn't expect to hear that, But the fraternity

(04:35):
stepped up and said, this is not who we are.
We will not tolerate this type of taunting and racist behavior.
Which is interesting that the fraternity, you know, has the
you know, the gall to step up and call it
out for what it is. While we have the governor

(04:55):
of Mississippi who basically said, hey, there's old miss taking
care of business.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
No, I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
That was Representative Mike Collins who said that. Kate Reeves,
the governor of Mississippi, said it warms my heart when
he saw the video and he even retweeted it, the
video of the young man who was taunting the woman
and making a monkey noises at her. So this is
one of those situations where the kids, in this case,

(05:26):
the fraternity is throwing a lot more courage than even
elected officials. They tried to politicize it, but the kids
are calling it for what it is, and that's blatant racism.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Sure, sure, sure, Alexandria, let's get your thoughts too.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
I agree with everything Trey has said about that you
can see that the university, excuse me, the fraternity is
stepping up and doing more than representative officials. So it
was really sad to see that, you know, their comments
on the situation. However, it's good that the one student
who was seen making those noises was for those actions.

(06:01):
And then we know protests have been going on for
some time now. University is across the country, students are
applying pressure, making their voices heard, and of course you
can always do that and still be respectful and not
show racist behavior.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah. Yeah, I want to share a couple of quotes
just so that you know people here from the sources directly.
Quote Phi Delta, Theta General Headquarters is aware of the
video regarding the student protests at the University of Mississippi.
This is from the fraternity. They go on to say,
the racist actions in the video where those of an
individual and are antithetical to the values of Fight Data,

(06:38):
THELTA and the Mississippi Alpha Chapter unquote. And then later
in the statement they say the responsible individual was removed
from membership on Friday, May third, and this is from
the university chancellor. Okay. Quote. While student privacy laws prohibit

(06:58):
us from commenting on any specific student. We have opened
one student conduct investigation. We are working to determine whether
more cases are warranted. And again that's from the university chancellor,
Glenn Boyce. Voice goes on to say, to be clear,
people who say horrible things to people because of who
they are will not find shelter or comfort on this campus.

(07:23):
So again it appears like the university is tiptoeing around
the issue. I'm a fan of direct action, so yeah,
shout out to the to the fraternity FI Delta data.
And there's a part of me that also kind of
understands the university's position because they're tasked with protecting Jewish students,

(07:53):
which I don't believe really need as much in the
way of protection as it's being suggests, because I don't
believe the protest on the campuses are anti Jewish or
anti Semitic protests. I think they are very much pro
Israeli or sorry, pro Palestinian protests and anti Israeli protest

(08:15):
but I haven't found much in the way of evidence
to suggest that they are anti Semitic. But the university
has to make sure that they walk that line, and
if they're walking that line, to protect the Jewish students
and to push back against any anti Semitism, which absolutely
they should if in fact it's there. Again, I don't

(08:35):
believe that it's there to the degree that it has
been suggested. But if their position is that we have
to push back against this type of rhetoric and this
type of behavior, then they have to also be as
calculated when pushing back against anti black behavior, which means
that they have to investigate things, be very meticulous about it,
and make sure that they are understanding the optics. While

(09:00):
I don't like the idea of this university dragging their feet,
I suppose as long as it concludes with, you know,
disciplinary action, because we can see the video, we see
the student right, then I think all will be well
and then everyone can learn a lesson from it. Black
Information Network News anchors Alexandria, Ikimoni, and Trey Thomas are

(09:23):
here with us discussing this week's major stories. All Right,
the wrap battle between Drake and Kendrick took a turn
toward violence this week, and many feel it may be
time to call a truce before things escalate further. Alexandria
bring us up to speed with the latest on this
story and then Trey, We're going to come to you next.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yeah, one of the biggest stories out right now in
the entertainment sphere, but it's crossing over into violence here.
But Toronto police they are investigating the shooting that happened outside.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Of Drake's home up in Canada.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Police at a man working as a security guard at
the property was shot while standing outside the gate. Official said,
the suspect, you know, did run from the scene, so
they're still investigating looking for that person. But the officer
or the security guard, I should say, was seriously injured
in this shooting. But I do want to be clear though.
We don't know the motive of the shooting, but we

(10:15):
do know this is happening around the time that Kendrick
Lamar and Drake are beefing. There are at least six
disc tracks out there between the two. They're firing shots,
no pun intended, but they are really going in on
each other. It just makes your jaw drops when you
listen to them. Even Kendrick's song Not Like Us broken
the all time record for biggest single day streams of

(10:37):
a hip hop song in the US Spotify history, So
you know, the whole world is watching and paying attention.
But also that was what was just released is that
somebody was just arrested too for an attempted break in
at Drake's home. So there are a lot of things.
Once again, we don't know if it's really connected or
the motive behind it to say it's because of the beef,

(10:59):
but Drake's taking a lot of hit right now, and
I think Kendrick's house is safe. But of course we
want everyone to be safe. We want everyone to play
fair and you know, do what they do in hip
hop and make history.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Sure, sure, sure, you know.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
I tell you. I found interesting about this is that
the Biden Harris campaign he decided to get it on
this and basically they released a video using the music
from Euphoria, which is what number eleven right now on Billboard,
so it's way up there. But this has capped this

(11:39):
rap rivalry, has captured the imagination of even our elected
officials because what they did is they released their own
video with Biden and Harris, and in it they changed
the lyrics and subtitles to say it's always been about
love and hate. Now let let me say I'm the

(12:00):
biggest hater. Now this is the Biden Harris campaign talking
over the music from Euphoria, and they go on to say,
I hate the way you walk over women's rights, the
way you talk about immigrants. I hate the way that
you dress. I hate the way that you sneak this
on truth social Yeah, that is interesting. You know how

(12:22):
hip hop and politics intersects, and how even our elected
officials during an election year are co opting this little rivalry.
Maybe I shouldn't call it little, but you know what
I mean, this rivalry between RAPS two of raps biggest stars.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Yeah. Yeah, And you know the the interesting thing about well,
there's a lot of interesting things about Harry. It's funnily enough.
I was having a conversation with I was a guest
on BBC Radio yesterday talking about this very thing. In
terms of the shooting. There's a lot of rumors surrounding
that shooting of Drake's security guard. There's people saying that

(13:05):
the weekend was responsible for that. You know, because you
can imagine that Kendrick has people that will support him fans,
you know, people that would go to that length in
California absolutely, maybe in broader US, but in another country,
specifically Toronto. You know someone that's going to run up

(13:27):
to the six God's house with a gun and risk
it all like that. I don't know that that is
that Kendrick is any way responsible for that. That would
be a little that'd be too far and they'd be
silly and it wouldn't really make a lot of sense.
That has to come from somewhere else. But the point
is that there's a lot of rumors surrounding it. But

(13:51):
there's another side of that too, and that's that you know,
Drake's Ovio store in London was vandalized and someone spray
painted across the of it. Uh they Not Like Us,
which is the track the title the title to the
track that Kendrick last released, the one that they're I
think they're shooting a video for it currently at the

(14:13):
time of this recording. So they're shooting that out in
la And I know that because Q and I were
invited to that that shoot, So you know there's a
lot going on there. And then the last thing I'll
say is that you know mentioning chart position again, at

(14:33):
the time of this recording, Uh, Not Like Us is
number one in Toronto in terms of streaming, so you
check Apple Music, Spotify, it's number one in Toronto, and
so I think that gives you an idea of just
how involved people are, just how popular this is. And

(14:57):
you know, you mentioned the Biden administration used the music,
and then everyone has their two cents, myself included. I
didn't eve even expect to because normally I don't even
feed into this type of thing, but I just kind
of got roped into it. So here's hoping that this
is the last of the violence that we see and
can potentially associate with this back and forth, because no

(15:19):
one likes to see that. I honestly, I'm still a
big Drake fan. I hope that, you know, everybody comes
out smelling like roses and that they'll reconcile at some
point in the future. Everyone learned their lessons, and you know,
I'm all about positive black mail interactions, so you know,
that's what I want to see in the future. For
our final story, in New York, the judge presiding over

(15:41):
the Donald Trump hush money trial is threatening the former
president with jail time, and the primary witness connected to
the case took the stand this week. It all sounds
like I'm made for TV movie, but it actually happened
in real life. Trey give our listeners an update on
the case to close us out, and then Alexandria will
come to you for our final thoughts.

Speaker 3 (15:59):
Well. Storm Daniels is on the witness stand for a
second time this week, and a lot of people are
pointing out that what that the the defense, you know,
the the lawyers for the former president are trying to
nail her down and keep her pinned into this world

(16:20):
of adult entertainment. But she's owning it. You know. They
asked her, they asked her straight up, well, you know,
you got into porn because you want to, you know,
you wanted to make more money. She's like, yeah, this
is America, we like to make money here. They asked
her if she hated Donald Trump for some of the
comments that he's been making about her, and she said

(16:43):
yes to that as well. So it's been interesting to
see the testimony of this woman who's been who's probably
the most infamous of anyone associated next to David Pecker
of the National Inquirer. And you know, I don't think
that I don't think that the defense has gotten the

(17:05):
bounce from her being on the witness stand that they
thought they would. I think they thought that they could
pinhole her and pigeonhole her into a certain perspective, and
they haven't been able to do that, and so it'll
be interesting to see what else she has to say
this week, although some people have complained actually that it's

(17:26):
not as salacious as they thought it would be, considering
that you have, you know, an adult film actress who's
on the witness stand testifying about a former president. So
that's interesting to hear people complain that they thought things
would be, you know, a little juicier than what they expected.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Yeah, that's fair, Alexandria, let's get your thoughts here. Yeah,
it's a very.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Interesting case to watch, especially what Trey was talking about,
how the Trump's, how Trump's lawyers were trying to really know,
shoot her credibility down. But another part that I really
thought was interesting in this case is that he Trump
has been threatened multiple times with jail time. He has
been given to fins about you know, violating the gag
order in regards to this case.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
The gag order is.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Supposed to really stop him from talking about the witness
and jurors, but you know, Trump will always speak his
mind when he wants to. The fines are only one
thousand dollars to him, that's probably a dollar. So he's like, whatever,
who cares take my dollar so I can speak my
mind and keep it moving. So really interesting to see
how this case ends and you know what follows after.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Sure, Sure, And I think it's important to note that
some of what the defense was using in terms of
a tactic to try to discredit Stormy Daniels and to delay,
you know, any sort of punitive actions toward Donald Trump

(18:59):
and food asking for a mistrial, and part of that
was based on the fact that when Stormy Daniels was testifying,
she mentioned all kinds of things that weren't directly relevant
to the charges, things like the former president not wearing
a condom, and so that's kind of their strategy at

(19:25):
the defensive strategy. It's very very thin, very weak. But
Donald Trump is he's a slippery one. So you know,
these are things that we need to pay attention to
because these things they do work for him. You know,
he delays things long enough, he figures out ways to
skirt the consequences, and you know, somehow or other, his

(19:47):
hundreds of lawyers over the years figure out ways to
get him off the hook. And I'm hoping that he
actually faces some justice at some point. I'm really hoping
for the funny Will one, but know this, I wouldn't
be mad at this one either, So with that in mind,
we'll leave it right there. I'd like to thank you
both very much for your time and your insight. Once again,
