Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome into episode one and twenty eight of Bring Heaven Down.
My name is Tim and I'm the host of this podcast.
Do you have a question, a comment, a concern of disagreement,
a topic, email the show Bring Heaven Down number seven
at gmail dot com and I would love to get
(00:22):
to that topic. And I love the little community that
we've built through this podcast. Thank you to all that
reached out to me about where I was for the
last few weeks during my paternity leave. And I'm sorry
that I couldn't release podcasts because the baby came very
(00:43):
quickly and unexpectedly, almost a week before the do date,
which is not the norm for our family, but a
huge blessing nonetheless, and the podcast is back in motion
doing its thing, and I just want to thank you
(01:03):
for being a part of it. We are in our
raising our children. Children are a blessing series, And yesterday
I talked a little bit about discipline and the importance
of discipline, why it is godly to discipline our children,
and then I shared that God disciplines us. And here's
(01:25):
what it says in Hebrews chapter twelve, starting at verse seven,
endure hardship as discipline. God is treating you as his children.
For what children are not disciplined by their father. If
you are not disciplined, and everyone undergoes discipline, then you
(01:49):
are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover,
we have all had human fathers who disciplined us, and
we respected them for it. How much more should we
submit to the father of spirits and limph They disciplined
us for a little while as they thought best. But
God disciplines us for our good in order that we
(02:12):
may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at
the time, but painful later on. However, it produces a
harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been
trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees,
(02:33):
make level paths for your feet, so that the lame
may not be disabled, but rather healed. These verses are
all about God disciplining us, and if you feel like
you are being disciplined by God, then it's actually encouraging,
(02:55):
because what this verse says is that God disciplines us
for our good that we may share in His holiness.
It is not fun to be disciplined. Nobody likes to
be corrected. Or go through suffering or painful situations. But
(03:20):
what these versus clearly point out is that discipline is
for our own good. And if discipline is for our
own good, then we as fathers and mothers, should discipline
(03:42):
our own children. And sometimes what I need to remind
myselves of is that I am not my children's friend.
I am not my children's friend. I am their father. Eventually,
(04:05):
as they get older and our adults and have their
own children, then I hope that that relationship becomes a friendship.
But when they are young, of course I can play
(04:27):
with them and have fun, and we can have fun memories,
and we can have great moments together. But I am
not their friend. If they do something wrong, I am
their dad, and I need to correct that behavior. And
if I am not following the way of the Lord,
(04:49):
then it is God's responsibility as my father to discipline me.
And I was just disciplined by God. Two weeks ago,
I host a sports podcast that focuses on Minnesota sports,
(05:14):
and some of my language was getting a little out
of hand. Not that I was cussing up a storm
or swearing all the time, or whatever the case may be.
It wasn't raunchy Ranchi Ranchi, but there were some words
that needed to be corrected, and a listener pointed it
(05:34):
out contacted someone else and they contacted me, and it
needed to be corrected. And I was convicted about that
and God disciplined me in that moment. And guess what
My behavior now is different because of God's discipline. And
(05:57):
there's a verse in the Book of James that I
think speaks to this exact situation. James Chapter one, verses
two through four. Count it all joy, my brothers, when
you meet trials of various kinds, For you know that
the testing of your faith produces steadfastness, and let steadfastness
(06:20):
have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete,
lacking in nothing. So when you meet trials of various kinds,
which can count as being disciplined by God, you can
count it as joy because what is happening is that
you are being strengthened. You are becoming stronger. If you
(06:44):
go lift weights for the first time in twenty years,
you are going to walk away from that situation more
sore than you've ever been in your entire life. But
what is happening is that you are getting stronger through
that struggle through that toughness. When I was engaged to
(07:09):
my wife, she wanted to do a workout together, this
beach body workout thing with her and her dad, and
I was engaged or I was dating my wife, I
think actually at the time, and I didn't actually want
to do it, but I was dating my wife at
the time, and I'm like, Okay, I gotta do it.
And what I actually do believe is that when you
(07:34):
do something like that and you're not good at it,
it's actually good for you. It is good to push
your body to limits and push through struggle and persevere
and teach your body how to handle those things. So
although I had never done this beach body workout before
(07:55):
and I knew I was going to struggle through it,
I came with the approach of this is going to
be good for me, and I believed it. I didn't
want to do it, but I one believe that it
would be good for me. And it's the same thing
with discipline. I don't want to be disciplined, nobody does.
(08:19):
It sucks, but it is good for us in the
long run. It is good for our bodies, It is
good for our souls, our minds, our relationship with Christ,
and then we can turn and help others through discipline,
particularly our children. So discipline is not just a thing
(08:47):
that you think you should do. Discipline is a godly
act of helping us draw closer to Him, and it
is a godly act that we should display onto our
children as well, so that we can help them grow
(09:09):
closer to God himself and grow as believers. Thank you
for joining this episode today and I hope the Holy
Spirit revealed more and more about our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. If you have a question the comment of
