Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's the Broncos Country.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome back to the Broncos podcast network and YouTube for
the latest episode.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Of Broncos Now.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
As I was in your host Sidney Jones, and coming
up on today's episode, Film Malani joins the show. We'll
take a look at some recent news surrounding the Broncos
and look ahead how the team will approach the off
season all that more.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Coming up. Joining me here in.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
The Broncos Podcast studio for today's episode of Broncos Now
is fellow team reporter Film Maloney.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Phil thanks for joining me for today's episode.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
No off season for us.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
For us, we do yeah, not Broncos Now every day though,
just once a week.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
That's true, A little bit less, that is true.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Well, how are you doing at your off season?

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Going good?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
This is always a time to sort of read, you know, Coop,
you know, gather yourself and you know it's a long season,
but then this time of year it's sort of exciting
to turn your sights forward and see what well ways
the Broncos can improve over the off season.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, it's going to be a busy off season.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
I think, yeah, yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Every off season is busy.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Though people always ask what do you do in the
off season, But there's so.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Much stuff going on.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Oh my guysh yeah, I mean with all of the
draft prep going on here and then free agency of
course before that, and there's always stuff going on. So
uh that the NFL does a really nice job about
being like sort of a year long sort of always
something going on.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
But it's also now.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
A time to just like watch some of these other
playoff games and just sort of see like where the
best of the best in the league are and what
they do well and sort of you know, you can't
help but like sort of think about how the Broncos
would match up against some of these teams that are
still playing.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
So, yeah, definitely you're looking forward to the championship games
this weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, I think I'm going to take the raven shot.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yeah exactly.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, but I really want the Lions to pull through
and make it.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
There's just so many Denver connections with the forty's.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
I sort of feel like.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
You know, Christian McCaffrey, caution and yeah, just a lot
of overlap there, John Lynch of course, or GM so.
But the scene last weekend Detroit.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Was pretty hush. It was so.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Getting a chance to you know, see that city get
behind their team has been pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, it is really cool. I see that's why I
want the Lions. I want them to make it to
the super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah, I think I think as long as the Chiefs,
Sta'll make it.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Good point.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, we've entered that mode.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
We have. Yes, well, Phil, There's not a ton going
on in Broncos news, but it was announced on Monday
that cornerback Patser Tan and returner Marvin Junior, they were
both named to the All ac a FC team voted
bond by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
So that's cool, good news for them.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
You know, there's so many like season awards, and I
feel like maybe like the AP All Pros, like sort
of the really big one of course said did not
make that. So nice to see him get this one here.
And you know, this is an esteemed group that's voting
on these type things, so nice to see him get recognized.
He's just such a tough position to, you know, get

(03:06):
these honors because you look at the stat sheet and
you just don't see these huge numbers, and I think
then it's easy to sort of overlook the impact that
he makes. So nice for him to get recognized there.
And I think also during this sort of awards season
here for the elite players in the league, it's an
opportunity for Pat to look at his game. And you know,

(03:30):
players like Pat are always looking to get better, you know,
And so I'm sure he's looking at his game and wondering, Okay,
how can I get my interception numbers up, you know,
higher and you know, into that sort of six seven, eight,
you know range. How is it possible to get there
when you just don't get that.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Many targets, you know, And so.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
I think that that's something that Pat's going to sort
of focus on and and you know, I think he
can learn from some of the greats in the past,
you know, even like a guy like Champ Bailey. Champ
didn't get them any targets, but still found ways to
you know, bait quarterbacks into throwing to him or do
different things where you know, you get a chance to

(04:14):
increase your numbers there. So I bet you that's what
Pat's looking at this offseason. And he'll be at the
Pro Bowl and he'll be you know, rubbing elbows with
some of the best in the league. So he'll pick
up tips here and there, and then uh yeah, for
Marvin Mims, I mean he's really collected this whole offseason. Yeah,
at the end of the year here, so I mean,

(04:34):
Pro Bowl, All Pro, all these all these things.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
So team today too, Rookie team.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
So uh that sort of just speaks to the impact
that he's had in the return game. Now for Marvin,
I'm sure he wants to be more of an impact
on offense and as a wide receiver, and we saw
glimpses of that, especially Washington Field. Yeah, some big plays
there in that Miami game. He had a big down
the field Chicago, so you know what he's capable of.

(05:04):
And now, okay, how do you take your game to
that next level, especially on the offensive side, where you're
more than just that jet sweep guy in the backfield
to you know, getting the handoff. How can you become
a consistent playmaker intermedia routes, short routes, the deep routes
are there. So how does he become that guy for

(05:25):
the Broncos next season. I'm sure that's what he's looking
to do. But his impact in the return game, I mean,
that's one area where if you look at his Broncos
team Yeah, the jump from twenty two to twenty three,
none was bigger than in the Special teams, so that
the Broncos really made drastic improvements there. And you know,

(05:46):
so many of these games they were playing with really
good field position, whereas in years past they'd been backed
up right up against our own goal line and it's
really hard to get a drive going from there.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Yeah, that special teams unit, like you said, made the
biggest turnaround by far over yeast year. Was impressive to watch.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Yeah, and he had just the one kickoff return for
a touchdown, but it's uh, you know, those are plays
that really change how you know games are played, so
uh And he even said it at the end of
the year that he felt like teams are kicking to
him differently, differently they knew what kind of weapon he was,
So when you got a guy like that back there,

(06:23):
you know, it makes a difference.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
And only his rookie year too, so excited for him.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah here, she's like, you know.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
You mentioned all of the changes that you know could
be coming for the Broncs this offseason. He's like the
one guy You're like, I feel really confident about him
and like his future is really bright, and it's sort
of I think that you can really get behind a
guy like Marvin right now.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
I agree, just a very matures She was really impressive.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Then you're just talking to him in the locker room.
He sounded like a vet.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah he really so, just the way he carried himself
and yeah, yeah, really impressive. Just getting a chance to
know him a little bit this year, so definitely, yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Well Phil.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
In other news, it was also announced this week that
quarterbacks coach Davis Webb Web he's going to coach at
the East West Shrine Game.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Cool for him, huh, really cool. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
And then a couple other coaches to offensive quality controls
coaches Zach Grossi and Logan Kilgore, they're going to be
at this year's Senior Bowl.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Soome fun.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Yeah, I think that for these guys, when you're just
getting into coaching ranks, there's so much to learn and
so like a chance to kind of go through this
process for them is a really cool opportunity. And you
get to just meet a lot of people around the
league at these different events, you know where you know,
I feel like this business is so small, you know,

(07:40):
like you sort of like start to do you spend
more and more time in this business, you kind of
get to know everything Frey one, even Brian Callahan, who
just got hired by the Titans. I remember when he
was just an offensive assistant here with the Broncos, you know,
with John Fox and Gary Kubiak, with Peyton Manning. So
you get a chance to get to know these guys
at a young level.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
You can kind of.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Identify some traits that you're like, this guy's got cert yeah, exactly.
So for a chance for the guys that you just mentioned,
especially Davis web Yeah, who's just just getting a taste
of what it's like to be a coach, I think
that these are really cool opportunities where you meet people,
you network, and then for the Broncos a chance to

(08:24):
work with some of these young guys coming into the
draft process. You know. I just think that these next
few months for these college prospects who are getting into
the draft, there's it's so crucial for them. There's so
much pressure on them. You know, it's good for coaches
to get to know these guys.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
I understand what their character is like. You know.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Of course the personnel Department's been scouting them all through,
you know, but now for the coaches to get involved
in this process and get in the mix and get
their hands, you know, on them and get to just
get to know them a little bit directly, I think
is a really cool opera tunity.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I think so too.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
And you know, I don't know what the selection process
is like for you know, some of these pre draft games,
but for three Broncos coaches to be selected.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
I think that's cool.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
That's cool. Yeah, it's pretty big.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
You know. And uh, all these bowl games are just uh,
you know, opportunity for somebody to make a name for themselves,
prospects and coaches too. So you know, if you're a
coach at these things and you're you know, you're going
out to dinner and you're chatting with these guys and
you get to know people, and uh, you know, if
you're smart and sharp, it stands out, you know. And uh,
everybody's always looking to improve their staffs, and that feels

(09:33):
like it's a good opportunity here for these guys to
really get their name out there more and then also
come back and bring their knowledge back into the building
here too, as the Broncos get into the draft process.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Yeah, definitely, if as we're talking about these pre draft
college games that are going on here within you know,
a couple of weeks. I mean, before we know it.
Like we said, it's going to be a busy offseason
with the combine is going to be here, in the agency,
the draft. You know, there's a lot of stuff and
it always comes so fast, so kind a big picture,
you know, how you think the Broncos are really just
going to approach this offseason?

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, well, do you heard George Peyton talk at the
end of the year. They're just how he didn't feel
like maybe they're going to be big big spenders come
free agency, and he talked about the importance of building
depth and the back end of your roster through the draft,
and you know, this is going to be an important
draft for the Broncos. Obviously did not have a first
round pick the last several years here, so now they

(10:26):
get another chance to pick a first rounder. You're looking
to get a guy who comes in and can contribute
right away, regardless of the position, I think, and you
know the rest of this draft is going to be
really important all throughout, you know, just building depth and
building quality pieces here and guys who are really going
to be able to contribute, and you know, George said

(10:47):
that he felt like, already on the Broncos roster, there's
a couple of guys who can make that jump from
you know, year one to year two. He mentioned that,
you know, Jakwan McMillan did that and really took that jump.
He thought there was a couple of guys and then
years roster that were ready to make that jump. That's
how good teams build, you know, you bring in these guys,
they get a taste of what your system is like

(11:07):
for a year, and then you're one a year two,
they make that jump. So you want to consistently be
adding guys in and building that depth from within. And
you know, you talk about these All Star games for
these college players. You just think about a guy like
Quinn Minors. Nobody knew who this guy was. He starts
making a name for himself at the senior ball during
the practices. You know, he's paincaking guys there, and then

(11:31):
all of a sudden you become a third round pick,
you know, and you're playing as a starter for the Broncos.
So these are really important moments here for these guys
where maybe you're an under the radar type of guy.
You start flashing a little bit. You get into these
meeting rooms with these guys and you start talking football,
and you can really pop off the page.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Every time I think about the Senior Ball, all I
can think of is.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
Yeah, you know, and I think that if you're just
sort of a casual football fan, you think of these
things are like sort of throwaway types of whatever. But
for these guys who are it means something. It's a
it's a big deal to them.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
And uh, you know the.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Time, I never know who's going to be watching.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
And obviously a combine is a big deal where you're
testing your athleticism and you're going to a chance to
go through the medical process and the interviews and stuff
like that. So I think people are aware of that.
But the All Star Games, those are big opportunities for
especially for under the radar guys to really uh you know,
make a splash if you will, and uh, yeah, these

(12:32):
are big opportunities. So an exciting couple of months, you know.
And for a guy like George, he's such a grinder,
he loves it. He's kind of I mean, this is
really his season, so uh, he's diving in all in
so exciting time for him.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Definitely. It's gonna be a busy couple of weeks too.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
Because of football nerds.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
For the football nerds.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah, well we have the Pro Bowl next week, oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
And then of course Super Bowl the week following.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Yeah, and your ball is coming up here.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Yeah, just in the same week, same week as a
Pro Bowl, exactly.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
So thanks to be on the lookout for yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
And uh, you know, I remember the Broncos coaching staff
coaching in the senior ball a couple of right, Yeah,
a couple of years back. So you know, it's an
opportunity for you to really learn and grow and uh
get a chance to meet these guys.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
So yeah, thinks so too. Yeah. So there's always something
going on Broncos. Something I'm playing.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
But yeah, you know, it'll be fun to see the
Pro bowlers get out there, and uh, you know, that's
an opportunity for them to learn from the greats. Yeah,
especially from Mars the rookie. Yeah, just to be there
and just to kind of hang out with those guys.

Speaker 4 (13:40):
It'll be cool.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah, will definitely be cool. Well, Phil, thanks for joining
the show.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
To I said, it's always a good time for Broncos Now.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Yes it is.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
That's going to do it for today's episode of Broncos Now.
